In Blossom visual analysis (ep. 1-7): How to film a gothic romance

Although I'm not completely convinced about some of the writing choices of In Blossom, I absolutely LOVE the show's production design and cinematography. @mademoiselle-red wrote a great post about how main character Pan Yue fits the gothic romantic lead archetype, and those gothic elements are not only present in the script but also in the show's visual storytelling.

Lighting

A key element of gothic romance is its atmosphere of mystery and suspense.

Something I really like about In Blossom is that despite its dark subject matter, many of its scenes take place during the day. One of the show's main themes is that appearances can be misleading and the cinematography often plays with that notion by linking light to deception and darkness to truth. Note how many of the emotionally honest beats of Yang Caiwei and Pan Yue's relationship happen at night (e.g., their couple escapades at the Li Residence, Ghost Market, and Life and Death gambling house) while fakery, corruption, and evildoing happen in the day. It's with this subversion of our expectations for light that the show creates an unsettling atmosphere.

And these lighting choices also help set up Pan Yue as a classic gothic romance anti-hero, someone the female lead, Yang Caiwei, fears but still finds herself drawn to.

Look at how Pan Yue is lit when shot through Yang Caiwei's subjective point of view. The strong use of light creates a lot of contrast--through her eyes, he is a mixture of light and dark, his morality as inscrutable as his shadowy figure.

Camera Angles and Shot Sizes

The show's use of low angles and close-ups further reinforces the idea that Pan Yue is unpredictable and even dangerous.

In cinematography, low-angle shots tend to make the subject look more powerful and menacing, and the show uses this technique to great effect.

Even in the intimacy of close-up shots, we can sense the threat emanating from Pan Yue. He’s always shot just a smidgeon too close for comfort.

For example, look at how much Liu Xueyi's face fills the frame in an early "romantic" scene. The shot feels almost claustrophobic as if he's so single-minded about his goals that he has no choice but to dominate the frame (and Yang Caiwei). It's an unnerving moment despite the soft words coming out of his mouth.

Side Note: I live for Pan Yue's (vampiric) long shots. The production design team was smart for dressing the character in dark clothes with such a sleek cut and drape--he looks like a sexy bat.

The Nosferatu references in Yang Caiwei's tomb are also perfect.

Composition and Framing

And finally, like any good gothic romance, In Blossom illustrates how love can drive one to despair and even madness.

Because of this, my FAVORITE scene of the show has to be the introduction of Shangguan Zhi. Her obsessive pursuit of beauty in hopes of seducing Pan Yue has left her a shell of a human being, and the scene's composition perfectly encapsulates this with how it focuses on the elegant lines of her body--not her face or personhood.

Shangguan Zhi is trapped by her delusional fantasy of a life with Pan Yue--see how she's boxed in by the vertical lines of the screen panel she admires--and the show regularly uses architectural lines to show how her desperation has trapped Yang Caiwei as well.

On May 14, Washington slapped new tariffs on China in what looks at first glance like the latest round of a familiar trade spat. The White House imposed duties of 25 to 50 percent on a range of industrial, medical, and clean tech goods—including semiconductors, solar cells, batteries, steel, aluminum, graphite, magnets, syringes, and ship-to-shore cranes. Strikingly, the latest measures also include a whopping 100 percent tariff on electric vehicles, effectively shutting the U.S. market to Chinese-made EVs.

Seen from Washington, these measures also look like a political move as U.S. President Joe Biden courts blue-collar voters in industrial swing states such as Michigan and Pennsylvania ahead of the November presidential election. It’s unlikely, however, that Beijing shares this benign interpretation. Seen from China, the tariffs look like a serious escalation of the U.S.-China contest and are probably raising alarm bells. Here’s why.

1. Washington is playing the long game. Stories of how China has become the world leader in EV manufacturing and is flooding the world with cheap vehicles have flourished over recent months. At the global level, there certainly is something to this analysis. Chinese exports of EVs jumped by a whopping 80 percent last year, propelling China to the top of the global ranking of car exporters. Yet this does not apply to the United States, where China supplied just 2 percent of EVs sold last year. (U.S. consumers appear to have a distinct preference for South Korean, Japanese, and European EV imports.) In other words, a 100 percent tariff on a few thousand cars will not hit Chinese firms hard.

A closer look at the list of targeted sectors suggests that batteries, not cars, will be the real pain point for China. The U.S. market is important for Chinese battery firms, which supply around 70 percent of the lithium-ion batteries used in the United States. For China’s battery sector, this means that the impact of the latest U.S. tariffs will likely be huge: The usual rule of thumb is that a 1 percentage point increase in tariffs entails a 2 percent drop in trade. With tariffs rising from 7.5 percent to 25 percent, the rule suggests that Chinese battery firms’ U.S. sales could drop by around one-third—or by $5 billion when one includes the entire battery supply chain. With Chinese battery-makers already seeing their profits plummet amid softening global demand, this is certainly bad news for Beijing.

Crucially, batteries are also an area where the U.S. government is investing huge amounts of public funds, in particular through the Inflation Reduction Act, which seeks to boost U.S. domestic production of clean tech goods. Seen in this light, the latest U.S. tariffs are preemptive measures to protect a nascent clean tech industry and make sure that there is domestic demand for future U.S. production. This suggests that the United States is playing the long game here, with little chance the tariffs will be lifted anytime soon. On the contrary—the U.S. clean tech market could well be closed to Chinese firms from here on out.

2. The White House is trying to force Europe to come on board and impose similar tariffs on China. Biden is probably seeking to score electoral brownie points with a 100 percent tariff on EVs, making former President Donald Trump’s proposal for 60 percent on U.S. imports from China look almost feeble. (Not to be outdone, Trump just announced that he would apply a 200 percent tariff on Chinese-branded cars made in Mexico.) Yet the reality is that Biden’s tariffs will not prove game-changing in the short term: Their implementation will be phased in over two years, and supply chain adjustments typically take time. In short, the measures are unlikely to fuel a U.S. industrial boom in time for the November elections.

What will happen before the election, though, is the conclusion in June or July of the European Union’s ongoing anti-subsidy investigation into China’s EV makers. Rumors abound of a possible tariff of 20 to 30 percent on Chinese EVs. Such a prospect is probably unnerving for Beijing; the EU is the biggest export market for China’s EVs, absorbing around 40 percent of Chinese shipments. The United States hopes that its 100 percent tariff on EVs will compel the EU to not only follow Washington’s example in imposing a tariff on Chinese EVs but perhaps also consider a higher one. This bold strategy could well work. Europe is unlikely to enjoy having its arm twisted by Washington, but the bloc will also worry that Chinese EV makers could double down on their push to dominate the EU market now that they have lost access to the U.S. one.

Chinese EVs look set to be a key topic when G-7 leaders meet for their annual summit in June. The United States will probably try to cajole Germany, which has long been dovish vis à vis China, into supporting sharply higher tariffs. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has pointed to the fact that European auto manufacturers “sell a great many vehicles that are produced in Europe to China”—hinting at German fears that China could retaliate against EVs and internal combustion engine cars imported from the EU.

3. The tariffs are a serious escalation from Washington’s previous de-risking strategy. In recent years, U.S. de-risking has focused on reducing the United States’ reliance on China for crucial goods and curbing Beijing’s access to dual-use technology in a bid to avoid fueling the country’s military advances. To implement this strategy, Washington has so far relied on two main tools from its economic statecraft kit: financial sanctions (for instance, on firms linked to the People’s Liberation Army) and export controls (notably on semiconductors, which are dual-use goods found in most military equipment).

Washington is slowly realizing that these two tools are imperfect. China’s massive sanctions-proofing efforts mean that sanctions do not always deal a blow to Chinese firms, which may no longer be using the U.S. dollar (China now settles around half of its cross-border trade in renminbi) or Western financial channels such as SWIFT, the global payments system. Washington also understands that export controls on clean tech would not curb China’s ambitions in the field, as Chinese firms already have all the tech they need. This leaves only one option for U.S. economic statecraft: tariffs that leverage one of the country’s greatest economic assets—access to its market.

This is why the latest U.S. tariffs are likely raising red flags in Beijing. The United States is now severing access to its market in clean tech and other areas that China sees as crucial for its plans to become the world’s future economic superpower. If the EU plays ball, this approach would expose a central flaw in Beijing’s industrial strategy: What if the world’s two biggest markets—the United States and the EU—become no-go areas for Chinese firms dependent on exporting their vast production, leaving them with piles of unused goods? Few other markets are available for Chinese clean tech exports—outside Europe, North America, and East Asia, most countries lack the infrastructure for large-scale EV adoption, for example. This prospect may well keep Beijing’s planners up at night, with no easy solution in sight.

The question now is whether and how Beijing will react. Serious retaliation is unlikely, since the United States exports far less to China than vice versa. Given its current economic woes, China also has little interest in further weakening its economy—for example, by imposing export bans on critical raw materials, rare earths, or other crucial goods for Western economies.

As the latest skirmish in the battle for economic dominance between Washington and Beijing, the new U.S. tariffs raise a number of bigger questions: Will Washington succeed in its efforts to create a domestic ecosystem for clean tech? Will the United States and Europe manage to cooperate—or go their own ways in their economic relations with China? Will the United States continue to curb Chinese access to the U.S. market for the purposes of de-risking—and if so, in which sectors? There is probably only one certainty in the U.S.-China economic war: The conflict will continue well after the November elections, whatever their outcome.

The Witcher Netflix - 3x08 Episode Reaction In season 3 of The Witcher Netflix we got our first look inside the Nilfgaardian Empire. I was taken by surprise because sometimes I think the show isn't subtle with certain things. Sometimes showing without telling. Or telling without showing in a way doesn't offer viewers enough information to understand the impact of a creative choice. The glimpses we got of Nilfgaard are, in my opinion, a subtle bit of worldbuilding that doesn't lose its impact without showing too much or telling too little. In the books Nilfgaard's culture and history, its military strategy--it's all pastiche from different historical empires. That is a hallmark of Sapko's style. I'm sure other people have spoken more definitively about that on tumblr and elsewhere. CDPR absorbed a lot of Roman Empire influences from the books for its own take for Nilfgaard. And now we can see TWN's production is also picking up on that as well and going with Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantine) flavor. So let me share a few screenshots from episode 3x08 that caught my eye. This is a mini-commentary with some thoughts, not a deep analysis. We had this establishing shot of a Nilfgaardian city (which I'm presuming to be the capital). This looks like Constantinople to me.

Next we have Emhyr with several men dressed in what comes off as very Eastern Orthodox-inspired vestments, right down to the monastic headwear (mitre, I think?). I'll leave more the in depth TWN and costume critical takedown to perseruna. But those hats definitely kept screaming Eastern Orthodoxy at me and making me circle back to Eastern Roman Empire.

And finally we have this scene of Francesca and Fringilla in the church. In all of my groupchats everyone was losing their mind about their conversation and heartbreak. But I was losing my mind over the fact that they were a) in a Nilfgaardian church or temple and b) this shot was framed in such a way to show us the statue of an ambiguous church figure in the background. Standing in between Fringilla and Francesca, no less.

I can't help but think this might be a statue of the Nilfgaardian Emperor who, in the books, is implied to be a prophet or important figure in the religious sphere.

A surprising amount of symbolism for this scene and show. Anyway. This was my main takeaway from 3x08. It was nice to be pleasantly surprised by this.

How Kamikaze Girls (2004) Revolutionized Lolita

INTRODUCTION

Kamikaze Girls is a Japanese dramedy film released in 2004 based off of the 2002 light novel written by author and fashion designer, Novala Takemoto.

The story revolves around the unlikely bond formed between two high school girls: Momoko Ryugasaki, a lolita who is the daughter of a ex-gangster whom now gets along by scamming people with fake name brand items, and Ichigo "Ichiko" Shirayuri, a ヤンキー (Yankii, a young delinquent) from a motorcycle gang whom Momoko considers to be something of her antithesis.

They come to befriend each other after Ichiko gets impressed by the skills of Momoko's father's "business" as Momoko decides to sell some of her father's product off in order to be able to afford a dress from her favorite brand, Baby the Star's Shine Bright. The story itself follows the development of their friendship and their journey of self-discovery.

DESCRIPTION

In my opinion, the entirety of the story hinges on the fashion aspect. Momoko's ambitions begin from the fact that she lives in a small town known as Shimotsuma with around no one else her age or any interests like her--namely her obsession with the Rococo fashion era and thus lolita itself. She longs to not have to travel so far and extensively to reach her favorite brand's store and someone to share her interests with. This alongside her want of obtaining a new piece brings Momoko to meet Ichiko and what subconsciously makes her want to keep her around even though they appear opposites. The scene where Momoko twirls around in Baby the Star's Shine Bright's Elizabeth one piece in the red colorway really stood out me with the way it's had an outlasting on the lolita community.

To add a little bit of context, the way that lolita works as a fashion industry is that usually a new line/design is announced and preorders open for a limited amount of time, usually around 2-3 days. From there after preorders end and the dress is released, if they're extras that weren't preordered they go live on the website and placed within the physical store.

The thing about this process is that lolita lines rarely ever get a second drop, and if they do, it is usually on a strictly made to order basis for their most popular products. This causes the second hand market for lolita to really thrive and when people either move away from lolita as a fashion or are looking to make space in their wardrobe, they turn to second hand websites such as Mercari to sell them. And due to the process I described above, people are very eager to buy because that way they get access to releases from years ago that they weren't around for. With Momoko's almost entire wardrobe consisting of various classic Baby pieces, people are always eager to look for the pieces she has worn but especially so with the Elizabeth dress. Due to this, it rarely is sold off unless the person is looking to leave lolita. And if it's in the signature red as she wore it, it tends to price for large amounts.

Not only has she altered the way second hand items are valued and sold, she has also immortalized what's known as the classic and sweet style of lolita. With the rise of various new subgenres of lolita, Momoko's influence via the various coordinations within Kamikaze Girls keeps the original style of lolita fresh and attractive for many newer lolitas to still appreciate and enjoy. Just like Momoko, my favorite brand is also Baby the Star's Shine Bright and I'm a huge fan of the princess style that lolita encompasses. This connection that we share allows me to understand not only her feelings about isolation with how hard it is to meet others like her, but also the way she expresses herself via her identity as a lolita. Particularly, how much it means to her to be able to at least project parts of her personality onto others just by walking next to them. And even the way she's able to catch the attention of her first friend, Ichiko, from it as well.

ANALYSIS

Kamikaze Girls perfectly captures the feelings of isolation people feel when they're stuck in the small town they were born in, with no one around them that understands them. In this particular angle, Momoko uses her love of Rococo era fashion in order to let herself be heard--even if the only people hearing her are the older people in her town that coo over her eccentric style of dress.

Lolita has a subtle feminist aspect to it as it's meant for the wearer to embrace their own identity and reject the harsh stereotypes of what beauty is for a woman as defined by the patriarchy. Kamikaze Girls as a movie centering around lolita is no different. Although there are a couple of male characters around, it becomes clear that not only are they not the focus but neither is the hypothetical male viewer as the story is about the ways in which Ichiko and Momoko grows as individuals and use their fashion to express themselves and that growth.

CONCLUSION

Momoko's whimsical yet strong nature is portrayed through the shape of her dress, the lace of her parasol, and even the rocking horse shoes she walks miles in just to reach Shibuya from her small countryside town. However, with the way she stays true to herself and the voice she's crafted for herself through fashion, she befriends Ichiko. From there, her strong sense of self even helps Ichiko gain a stronger sense of self to the point that Ichiko begins modeling for a lolita brand herself by the end of the film. I 100% recommend the film, especially as a fun way to introduce yourself to lolita and japanese fashion subcultures as a whole. It's campy, it's funny, it's inspiring, and a pretty quick watch !

Chapter 1: Analysis and Discussion

So we're starting where almost every good story starts: at the beginning. But even before the beginning, we have to talk about the inside cover page. It's not mentioned on the front, but here we can see this was written by children's author Irene Trimble. I'm only taking the time to point this out so A. People know who wrote this, and B. because Irene Trimble ALSO wrote the junior novelization for Disney's Wreck-It Ralph, a movie which is very conceptually similar to Foodfight. (Even down to being mostly about original characters and only featuring famous ones in cameo roles). Lawrence Kasanoff, Joshua Wexler, Sean Derek, Rebecca Swanson and Brent Friedman are also given writing credit, although this is clearly just for the script to the movie itself.

Anyway with that out of the way, the first page of Chapter 1 is mostly identical to what's seen in the finished film- the last customer of the night says goodbye to Leonard, the manager, as he closes up the supermarket for the day. The dialogue is even exactly the same! So nothing much to talk about so far. Incidentally though, in an early trailer for the movie from 2002, the sign above Leonard's supermarket says "Carlson's Market". In the finished movie from 2012 however, the sign says "Marketropolis Market" (which is a far worse name, in my opinion). Here neither name is used, so I guess we'll never know what the store is called in this version of the story!

The following page of Chapter 1 continues as the lights of the grocery store shut off and the place closes for the night. For a brief second everything is still, and then it miraculously comes to life, transforming into a bustling metropolis. The shelves turn into buildings, and the mascots of various products turn into "Ikes" (short for "brand icons"). This term isn't used right away in the novelization, however it's used so frequently in the movie itself and also later in the book that I think we should establish the preferred nomenclature right away.

Anyway, with the supermarket now full of life we focus in on a "large bird in glasses" who sees a helium balloon drifting across the store and says "We're in a pickle now!". It's not explicitly spelled out, but this is clearly supposed to be the Vlasic Stork (the mascot for a real-life brand of pickles.) Presumably they couldn't get the rights to any real-world brands for the novelization, so it's just being alluded to here as much as possible without saying his name. This is a trend that's also seen in author Irene Trimble's later work on the Wreck-It Ralph novelization, where none of the videogame characters are actually named but instead just implied (e.g. simply referring to Zangeif from Street Fighter as a large Russian wrestler.) The Vlasic Stork also doesn't have any dialogue in the actual movie, so it's up to interpretation whether this line was added to the novelization to clarify who he was, or if it was in the movie at one point but cut out.

Riding the helium balloon is Fat Cat Burglar, the mascot for the Fat Cat Litter brand. In the movie, this character is introduced without explaining who he is or what he's the Ike for, so it's nice to get some clarification here. We also get introduced to our main character, Dex Dogtective, the mascot for Cinnamon Sleuth cereal. In the novelization, he jumps from atop his shelf onto the giant balloon, but in the movie he's introduced already standing atop it. In general, this whole sequence so far has played out slightly differently to how it does in the movie, but not enough to be hugely noteworthy so far.

Okay, here we are on the next page and just like I did a few paragraphs ago, the book has established that brand icons are named "Ikes" in this world. It's good to be ahead of the curve though, right? Dex tells Fat Cat Burglar to hand over a basket of stolen kittens or else- this dialogue is mostly identical to how it is in the movie. However, of note is that Fat Cat Burglar is described as an "overstuffed cat" here, with mention of him twirling his whiskers. Now, I don't know if you've seen the actual movie (Please say you have I can't imagine why you'd be reading this blog if you haven't) but in the movie, Fat Cat Burglar is clearly a giant rat.

I mean, look at him, that's a rat. There's no two ways about it, there's no mistaking him for an entirely different species. So either Irene Trimble read the script and just assumed from the name that Fat Cat Burglar was a cat himself, OR at some point during production the character WAS actually a cat and this was changed later on. We may never know! But here, in the novelization, we can say for sure that he's a cat. Moving on, the rest of the page continues very similar to the movie- Fat Cat sends a group of hamster henchmen after Dex with the intention of pulverizing him.

Dex proceeds to beat up the hamsters with some slick martial arts moves before throwing them off the balloon with a roundhouse kick. This doesn't happen in the movie at all- already the differences are starting to add up. In the movie, he simply throws a piece of cheese off the balloon and the hamsters mindlessly run after it before falling Looney Tunes-style into the streets below. It's just Dex and Fat Cat now, and Dex demands he hand over the basket of kittens. Fat Cat refuses, and explains he needs to use the cats to make "black market Kitty Litter cookies" and Dex takes the time tell him this idea is in fact terrible and weird. Again, the explanation for why he's stealing kittens in the first place isn't in the movie either! 4 pages in (there are 128 total) and there are already so many differences! It makes you wonder just how different the rest of the novelization is gonna be, right?

Dex punctures the balloon with a cocktail sword and catches the kittens in midair, before using his price tag gun like a whip/lasso (think Indiana Jones) to hook onto a nearby building and land himself safely in nearby Produce Park. In the movie, Fat Cat gets a line of dialogue as the balloon flies away crying "I just wanna be loved...IS THAT SO WRONG?" that isn't present here at all, but that's about the only difference.

Dex hands over the basket of kittens to Hairy Hold, a fox Ike and the mascot for a brand of hair-care products. This character isn't a part of the scene in the movie, and in fact isn't introduced until later on, but here the novelization briefly tells us who he is and what Dex thinks about him. Dex also changes out of his leather jacket and hat (again, think Indiana Jones) into a fancy white tuxedo, however in the movie he's still in his adventuring getup for the rest of the scene.

As Chapter 1 draws to a close, we're introduced to Hedda Shopper, a newspaper reporter who remarks this is the five-hundredth case he's solved as head of the USDA (the United Supermarket Defense Association, not the United States Department of Agriculture) and asks what his secret is. Dex delivers his catchphrase "The secret's inside", and the chapter draws to a close. There's not a whole lot to say here as this exchange is identical to how it is in the movie.

So, that's Chapter 1 of this strange, strange book. 6 pages in and there are already major diversions from the movie, which is common for novelizations (they're usually based on earlier drafts of a movie's script, e.g. the infamous Back To The Future novelization) but it's especially interesting with Foodfight as it had such a troubled production, and like I mentioned at the start of this blog this appears to be the only copy of the novelization in existence so nobody else has EVER seen this. It's cool to get some insight on how this movie changed over the course of production, right? And that's not even getting into the changes to the story made in later chapters... if you thought THIS was different from the final film, you ain't seen nothing yet.

Project: Disrupt. Week 4 (reading week), Secondary Research

Over the reading week, I investigated different medias in order to garner inspiration for my project, specifically horror medias, that work to unnerve the viewer. Some of these I already had in mind in the duration of my project and some I came across last week, but its only now that I have investigated what makes them horror, and how they invoke fear in the viewer. I tried highlighting important words to make it easier to read if y'all are feeling lazy and want to skim.

Five Nights at Freddy's 1 (FNAF)

FNAF is a indie horror survival game created by Scott Cawthon, and a game franchise I've been interested in since I was 10 years old. To summarise in game, you play from the p.o.v of a security guard and must survive 5 (7) nights, and defend yourself from haunted human like animatronics, using the security cameras, doors, and lights. Its sparked a few ideas in my project such as paintings distorting themselves on cameras and small unnoticed changes that aren't known until its too late. What I want to focus on here is how audio enhances the horror in the game , and a little bit on the game visuals and how they also unnerve the player.

Audio

The horror aspect of the game is built off 2 pillars, "absence of information", and "absence of action", as you are trapped in a claustrophobic office, with 5 animatronics trying to get you, with no info and 2 doors working on limited power to defend you. In this scenario, being helpless makes the player desperate for info, which is given to you through audio, so you cling to it like a lifeline, but that doesn't mean all audio clues are helpful.

Some audio is advantageous, it gives you clues on where the Animatronics are in the building, over time you learn the patterns and clues of some of these sounds, which helps you plan to survive.

However some are disadvantageous and works against you, and is detrimental audio. For example the fan in your office is deliberately loud and interferes w/ other audio signals, and is at a specific frequency that automatically causes anxiety for the player. There's also red herrings, barely there, simply to stress you and add to the environment. The vague vocals are a big red herring, and are actually like a audio uncanny valley, Scott uses recordings of "Autobiography of a Yogi" played backwards and distorted , and does the same with a child's laugh making it sound demonic. This slightest hint of language in an otherwise garbled sound makes the player paranoid as they are unable to understand this hidden information or threat.

A lot of the unnerving aspects of the game is the Foley sounds used, the diegetic sounds, which are almost entirely consistent with the game actions, which not only immerses you in the games atmosphere and heightens the fear factor. The only non-diegetic sound is the audio stinger, often used in horror movies to link or emphasise a movement in a visual production and often comes as a shock, in the game its used for the arrival of a animatronics arrival at your doors, and the contrast from the diegetic sounds completely shocks the player and causes them to panic.

Visual

Visually, Scott uses the dark cramped office of the game to create an oppressive space, and grainy video footage that makes you squint to see what's happening, leaving the player uncertain of what's in the area. But on the topic of the uncanny valley affect, the suits of the animatronics have it as a visual affect, they're too human to be cartoonish yet move too mechanically to be human, but what really makes them uncanny to me personally is their eyes.

On the left are the marketable plushies and on the right are the in game models. The in game models have very human looking eyes and dark voids around them, separating them from the rest of the face, the dark circles automatically look terrifying compared tp the plushies that don't, and actually look like cartoon characters. The void separates them, highlighting the fact that the mask aren't their true faces, this fact is especially uncomfortable if you take into account that there are human souls possessing these suits.

Paranormal Activity 1 (PA)

Paranormal Activity is a found footage terror movie directed by Oren Peli, and I watched it on Halloween partially out of interest and because I saw that it was completely shot through one of the main protagonists hand held cameras, documenting the strange occurrences in their home with his partner. Since I'm looking at security cameras a lot for my project I thought it might be relevant for me to look at.

So its more or less about this young couple (Katie & Mikah) being haunted by this demon that's been following Katie for years, recorded all on Mikah's cameras over a period of 21 nights. The first hour drags on slowly building up the tension while also showing the demon gradually become more aggressive and extreme. It escalates rapidly, going from zero to a hundred very quickly in the last 20 minutes leaving the viewer shocked, I certainly was. Peli utilises a series of techniques to create this creature's presence, such as displacing/moving objects, slamming doors, leaving foot prints with flour, leaving physical marks (bites and scratches)on the protagonists, and getting directly and indirectly physical with them. It goes from keys ending up on the floor, to being dragged out of bed and/or possessed.

Watching the progression of the demons behavior and watching from the cameras perspective at night is deeply disturbing especially later into the movie, as the protagonists are completely defenseless as the majority of the stuff happens. There's something very uncomfortable about watching someone who is sleeping be completely helpless to the happenings around them, especially happenings with harmful intent.

This is the footage of the 20th night, and gives an example of the type of stuff that was happening at night to the couple while also displaying the more aggressive behavior of the demon.

Ringu

Ringu is a 1998 Japanese phycological horror film directed by Hideo Nakata depicting a reporter and her ex-husband investigating a cursed video tape that is rumored to kill the viewer seven days after watching it. I haven't had the opportunity to watch it yet but during the week off I was explaining the concept idea I had of a painting crawling out of its frame to a family friend, and he told me that it reminded him of this scene from the movie. This scene creeped me out, and the grainy footage of the tv enhances the unnaturalness of the scene. Ringus's slow approach out of the creates suspense and the viewer is forced to squirm and anticipate their attack.

This took longer than I thought it would to write up and I had to rewrite the fnaf section 3 times to make it to the point and cohesive, I know to much about it and tried not to info dump about it.

Also I will post my ideas derived from these pieces of media and how I plan to include them into my project, I have big ideas so far and I'd like to try all of them. This lost is already long enough.
