I arrived in Mysore, India this weekend to participate in a 4-week intensive yoga training. Let me say this upfront. I’ve never thought of myself as someone who would do yoga two times a day, six days a week for a month.

I’m short (5’ 7”) and stocky (185 pounds with a 34” waist), always have been.

I’m good for a forward roll on the gymnastics mat, but that’s about it.

I grew up lifting weights as a teenager but focused on the chest, bicep and shoulder exercises, like the majority of meatheads around me in the late 80s.

I have run a few marathons (Never faster than 3:20) and completed a 14-hour 50-mile trail race when I turned 40 y/o. But no matter how fit I have been over the years, I’ve never been able to touch my toes, or thought much about it until recently.

As I move into the third quarter of my life, flexibility and concentration are growing more important to me. Like many people my age, my lower back hurts a little when I wake up. And my energy levels are low to dismal after 4pm.

For 25 years I’ve spent 8-12 hours everyday in front of a computer screen and increasingly can feel my body contracting inward.

As my mindfulness practice deepens, interest about the interplay of mind, body and breath has grown. I’ll just note this point here and maybe return to it later.

Documenting my experience here in Mysore with the hope that I’ll gain clarity about what's really happening and maybe help someone else pursue their own interest in these things.

Many of the students live in the same building during their training (one month minimum) so it’s very convenient to really focus on developing your practice.

The Students:

There was a nice mix of men and women in the class ranging in ages from 20s to 60s. People were dressed in comfortable clothing and only a couple of ladies were all decked out in the lululemon. People looked to be in good shape. Men looked like the yoga body types you 👀 on 📺. Tall, thin and smooth. I think I was the only American, though there was one scruffy looking dude with a big red beard and trucker hat that struck me as American or Canadian.

I was happy to 👀 a large number of Indian men and women in the class, which added to the feeling that this was an authentic experience.
