Hey dude, here is your daily dose of cute thoughts
1. Always love when ahjumma asks "Is this your girlfriend?". Same concept like the "Are you two a couple?" Theme video.
2. Such a cute gesture seeing how you save your girlfriend in your contact list. Or maybe seeing your phone wallpaper. Maybe "Cutie pie💕" "My2ndhalf❤️). Or a picture of her, she never seen, that you took secretly.
3. Having Ice skating date at a nearby mall is always cute, learning while spending time together.
4. Going for school reunion, everyone there doesn't expect the most unexpected couple.
Have 'Marcus'😅
Hello mikeylo! I've actually been in a little bit of a mental rut, especially with how busy I've become, so these are always nice to get bits of inspiration for UD :] As such, I'll be using this ask to talk about Yuno and Minji :>
During the spring, when the weather is nice, Yuno and Minji like going on walks at specific park they both like. One day, the pair are resting on a bench underneath the shade, sharing an ice cream cone (Yuno didn't want any, but Minji insisted that they share one and he can never say no to her) when an old lady passes by, a polaroid camera hanging by a lanyard on her neck. She smiles at them, asking them if they're a couple, which they reply with a resounding 'yes'. She then offers to take a photo of them for free, telling them how nice the light looks on them. Minji enthusiastically agrees, and despite Yuno's awkwardness in front of a camera, the picture turned out alright. The old lady gave both of them a polaroid of the picture before walking off. Minji keeps her copy in her phone case while Yuno keeps his in his wallet.
Since this is his first relationship, Yuno doesn't really know what to think about pet names. He feels pretty neutral about them, but he likes Minji's name the most, so he'll have her contact as "Minji<33333". Simple and to the point :> His phone lockscreen (after he figures out how to change it) will be a picture of Minji sleeping on his shoulder. If she's busy with something, he'll stare at his lock screen for hours, waiting for her notification to pop up :>
Yuno was hesitant about the ice skating at first, but he can't say no to Minji's face :> The rest of their friends tag along, all having some experience ice skating, leaving Yuno to be the obvious outlier. Minji tries her best to help him by holding his hand and supporting him every time he falls, but in the end, he uses one of those balance aids that children often use :> He feels a little embarrassed, but Minji assures him that he looks cute and that's enough for him :>
I have a future scene in mind, so technically this isn't canon, but it's fun to write anyways :> As Yuno and Minji walk hand-in-hand through the venue, they receive the same stares that Yuno had been accustomed to during high school. Aside from Hanni, everyone found it hard to believe that the notorious delinquent and the class president were not only dating, but had been dating ever since they first met during senior year. When Minji was asked to do a speech, she made it abundantly clear to everyone how much they misunderstood about Yuno, much to his embarrassment. A couple people came up to him to apologize, which lead to the two of them leaving early after Yuno's social battery runs out :>

When the sunbeams poured over the towns below, Dream and George went shopping before stopping at an ice cream shop. It’s just him and his boyfriend wandering aimlessly around the mall; what more could he ask for?
[ Inspired by George’s snap. ]
“Dream,” George called into the bathroom door. “We are not going into a restaurant with a formal dress code.” “I’m trying to look good for you, George,” Dream responded. “You look good even when you wake up and haven’t taken a shower.” “I want to make this special. It’s so tough for us to go on dates nowadays, so I want to make it amazing for you.” “If you want to make it amazing for me, you can start by coming out of this door.” He knocked onto hard wood. When it slid open, Dream was dressed in a green sweater, one hand combing through his dishevelled hair, his striped beanie in the other, body silhouetted against the bathroom lights. “See? You don’t look atrocious.” “My hair is a mess.” “You are even messier. Come on, the mall won’t be open forever.” ---- Shoes were dragged across the floor as he let his hand glide through different fabrics. Dream followed George, even if he were to walk in circles; a puppy tacitly pleading for attention. “Have you found something you wanted?” Dream asked. “Everything here could be bought at a thrift store for only three dollars. Pointless.” “What about this?” From a row of sweaters, Dream pulls out a varsity jacket. George lets his fingertips caress cotton. It was soft, and reminded him of the crowd's acclamation when he hit a home run; memories of Dream when he sprinted into his arms when the game was over like a waterfall meeting its lake. He’d bathe in Dream’s care all day if he could. “Sure.” George took one last glance at the jacket before he walked to the register. “What made you want to buy it instantly?” The sparkle flickering in his eyes was telling. He remembered. He searched through his wallet. “I used to wear this a lot when I played baseball.” Dream hummed. “It was the first time I was able to have a proper conversation with you. You could not stop talking about how much you loved that sport and how good your team was.” George laughed as he handed the cash. “We were good. Years of practice is not going to go down the drain after a couple of matches.” “Are you going to wear it?” “It’s brand new, I don’t want to have it ruined on my first day of getting it.” George held the sleeve in his fist. “Of course, of course.” They walked into the crowd. George pulled his phone from his pocket and gave a slight tap onto the screen. 15:19, it read, numbers plastered onto the blue wallpaper. “Is there anywhere else you want to go?” Dream asked, jacket being draped onto his back. George glanced around the mall. “We could get ice cream.” He pointed to an ice cream shop which caught his eye. “We haven’t had ice cream in ages.” “Sapnap finished it all.” Dream laughed. “It was strawberry; he likes that flavour.” “He should’ve saved a spoon for me.” The bell rang when they swung the door open. Dream took a chair and sat in the corner as George ordered his favourite: chocolate flavoured ice cream with a cone in a cup. “You really like cones in a cup, huh?” Dream giggled. George sat down on the chair, placing his ice cream on the table in front of him. “Yeah, I do–hey! That’s mine! Order your own.” He snatches the spoon away from Dream’s hand before ripping the beanie off from his head and ruffling his hair. Dream smiled, and he could taste sunshine in them. After all, what about him isn’t a summer holiday?

Recce: Innocent Railway Tunnel
I filled up a recce at the location on Thursday 1st of October 2024:
I was looking to see if the tunnel wall could be mistaken for wallpaper when out of focus. I don't think it will be possible and therefore plan to use a Manfrotto skylite covered by a black drape to make the background black.
Of the two entrances of the tunnel, the east one (left image) can face the sun directly between 8 and 10 am.
The lighting in the tunnel is mostly top light from the ceiling tube lights with a decent amount of bounce from the floor and walls.
The tube lights are quite dim compared to the sun so using it as a side light was considered. This was later abandoned as this gives the shooting only a two-hour window and the weather forecast is rain for the shooting day.
Other shooting notes:
Sound: the wind, resonance in the tunnel and cars passing nearby make it hard to use on-location sound -- the sound will probably be rerecorded inside and dubbed in post to help sell the deceit of it being indoors.
There is considerable bike traffic so high-vis vests, traffic cones and watchers will have to be used to slow down and regulate traffic.
The wind makes the grass flutter, it would therefore be better if the chosen actor has short hair to maintain the illusion of an indoor space.
The scene requires the actor to be in a pyjama which may be very cold for the actor. Sufficient clothing and heating must be provided between takes.

Four Steps to Highlight Your Pooja Room
Pooja is essentially a devotion ritual for the creator. It includes varied rituals, offerings, and other necessities. One prominent part of all these essentials is incense products. It is said greeting God encompasses incense sticks, oil lanterns, sacred food offerings, and dhoop cones.
Likewise, a pooja room is the center of spirituality in every house. It is the location where you feel most at peace and filled with positivity. The energy radiating from your pooja rooms boosts concentration and enhances the body and soul. In addition, the pooja room hosts your deity idols, spiritual books, and other religious things you use to worship and connect with the Almighty God.
It may not be possible every time that you can donate a whole room for worshipping and meditating. You can also use a single corner as your pooja room, where you can pray and meditate by lighting up some fragrant incense sticks or dhoop cones. Irrespective of the size, it is essential to highlight the pooja room just like other spaces in your home.
Four easy ways with no effort to highlight your Pooja Room
While you may be wondering about additional expenses and time to highlight your spiritual corners, experts at Satya Incense went ahead and sorted some top DIY ways to highlight your pooja room.
Location of the pooja room
When it comes to deciding the location of the Pooja room (the direction), one can refer to basic Vastu Shastra suggestions. The sunlight comes from the North-East orientation of the building in the morning, making this time standard for praying and introspection. If someone’s home lacks a dedicated room specifically for the pooja, they can perpetually set up a mandap.
If you intend to dedicate a space to your pooja room, ensure it is in the center of the building, seen from each location. Avoid putting this room close to bathrooms or other damp corners.
Colour scheme of your pooja room
The colors you select for the dedicated room for praying to the almighty and meditating must be understated. You can opt for light colors as they assist in displaying a relaxed atmosphere, appropriate for everyday meditation. Colors commonly utilized for praying rooms can involve shades close to
People can try using ethnic or printed wallpaper to enhance the elegance of the praying area.
Make your pooja room more noticeable
Place oil lanterns in your praying space to brighten it up. One can opt for ornamental lamps you could turn on when executing the sunset ceremonies. It will help you to lend the room a fascinating glimpse. In addition to the hanging lanterns, try different stuff like reclining or ornamental praying bells. Moreover, you can also place wax candles in place of lanterns.
Fragrance
Although many people think it is a standard part of the pooja ritual and does not require any thought, they are wrong!! Similar to other spaces, pooja room fragrance will highly influence the entire feel of the place.
Using incense to establish the spiritual aura is essential. You can accomplish this by lighting the fragrant incense sticks. They enable you to develop the perfect ambiance but encourage you to relieve tension and improve focus.
Different Incense products to highlight your Pooja Room
There are numerous incense products present in the market to select . Agarbattis or incense sticks are available in different scents such as Chandan (Sandalwood), floral fragrances (Rose, Champa, and Jasmine), herbal fragrances like guggul, or sambrani.
Fragrance plays a vital role in praying to the Almighty God, meditation, and introspection. In addition, the aroma helps people connect to God by creating an ambiance of peace and beauty.
Final thoughts!
These tips will surely help you showcase your pooja room in your home. While most things do not require extensive research, selecting the right incense product for your home is crucial and requires some thought.
If you do not want to perform extensive research to get high-quality incense, always opt for reputed manufacturers like Satya Incense. Their products utilize organic elements and employ a handmaking process. Explore their extensive product range and elevate your pooja room ambiance today!

Unleash Your Creativity in Kitchen Design
Your kitchen is the heart of your home and a great place to let your creativity shine. From adding a pop of color to incorporating smart technology, here are 10 creative kitchen design ideas to inspire your inner chef:
Add texture with unique materials such as reclaimed wood and concrete countertops. Incorporate patterned backsplashes that add flair and style to your kitchen.
Incorporate Natural Elements
A nature-inspired kitchen seeks to enhance culinary inspiration by incorporating natural elements into the space. This includes a variety of materials, colors and layouts. Homeowners can choose the elements that best represent their unique design aesthetic and lifestyle.
For example, wood and stone are common design elements used in nature-inspired kitchens. These can be featured as flooring, countertops or backsplashes. Alternatively, they can be featured as decorative accents on tables or shelves.
Additionally, maximizing sunlight is an essential feature in any nature-inspired kitchen. Adding full walls of windows or skylights helps fill the kitchen with natural light.
Decorative accessories are another great way to incorporate natural elements into your kitchen. Using natural materials like pine cones and rocks as accents, or greenery as table centerpieces are a few easy ways to do this. Even a simple plant can provide a nice touch to the kitchen while acting as an organic air purifier. There are endless opportunities for a nature-inspired kitchen design.
Incorporate Pattern and Texture
Incorporating pattern and texture is another way to enhance culinary inspiration in the kitchen. Whether it’s a brick wall, beadboard backsplash or patterned tile, the use of texture can create a bold statement in the room while evoking a feeling of warmth and coziness.
Texture can be both seen and felt and includes the appearance of grain, veining or a dimensional effect. It also adds contrast to a design through color, with natural variations in surfaces such as wood and tile providing subtle textures while breaking up predominately neutral tones.
A variety of contrasting textures can be incorporated into the kitchen design with simple details such as moldings and cabinet doors. A mix of metals, which is a popular trend, can be used in a kitchen as well – think oversized metallic range hood or brass pendant lights paired with wooden cabinets.
Add a Pop of Color
Incorporating a pop of color in your kitchen design can enhance culinary inspiration. Whether you go big with painted cabinets or small with accents, the right shade can create a memorable cooking space that will stand out for years to come.
A bold accent wall is one of the most dramatic ways to bring color into a kitchen. Choose a wet-space-safe wallpaper for an all-over treatment or paint a single wall to achieve the same effect. If you want to take it a step further, consider swapping out a basic light fixture with a brightly colored version.
If you’re not quite ready to commit to a full-scale color statement, a framed piece of art can add just the right amount of vibrancy. Alternatively, a bowl of fresh fruit or vegetables can serve as a neutral yet colorful focal point. Just remember to be careful about how much color you add; if the kitchen becomes too overpowering, it may feel like a circus instead of a sanctuary.
Incorporate Lighting
The right lighting can take your kitchen design to the next level. It’s a great way to add functionality and set the mood for an inviting cooking space for family and friends.
As you create your lighting scheme, be sure to incorporate three types: ambient lighting, task lighting and accent lighting. Ambient lighting provides general illumination, while task lighting illuminates work zones such as counters and sinks. Accent lighting can highlight decorative elements such as a coffered ceiling or a fine china collection.
Using the Foyr Neo 3D kitchen design software, you can experiment with different lights to find a combination that will best fit your culinary inspiration. The program also makes it easy to visualize kitchen ideas before making any changes.
Light fixtures are like the jewelry of your home — they can make a big impact on the overall style. From sculptural pendants that pack a punch of zoned lighting for food prep to subtle wall lights that cast a soft glow over shelving and backsplashes, the perfect fixtures can elevate any scheme.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate my budget for kitchen renovations?
To help you budget, here are some guidelines:
You should first estimate the cost to complete your remodel. These include countertops, appliances, cabinetry, paint, tile, lighting, plumbing, hardware, and other miscellaneous items.
Check out the average cost for labor in your area. Add this number to the total budget.
Add the total cost of all materials and labor to complete your project. Divide that number with the square footage of your kitchen. This calculates the cost per square inch.
Subtract any savings from doing your own work or purchasing materials at an affordable price.
To cover unexpected costs, add a contingency between 10 and 20 percent.
These are estimates only. Talk to a professional contractor for a more precise estimate on your kitchen remodeling budget.
With these guidelines in mind, you can develop a budget for your kitchen renovation. Your actual costs can vary depending upon the materials you select, the scope of the project, and other factors.
White kitchens are in fashion again?
White kitchens are becoming increasingly popular with homeowners who want to make their homes modern. Since 1980s designers started using white appliances and kitchen cabinets. Today, white kitchens are still one of the hottest trends in interior design.
Some experts think that the all-white kitchen trend is dead and that homeowners want something different. While white kitchens still remain very popular, there is growing interest in bolder kitchen designs.
It’s not likely that a white kitchen will go out of fashion anytime soon if you’re thinking about installing it in your home. Keep in mind, however, that trends can change. A timeless design may be a better choice if you intend to live in your home over time.
What colour goes best with a white kitchen?
A white kitchen can look amazing in different colours. However, walnut looks best with it. The natural wood tones will add warmth to the space, and the two colours will complement each other well. Black and grey can be a great choice if your preference is for something more subtle. However, if you want to make a statement, go for a bright colour like red or yellow. Whatever your preference, make sure to tie in your decor with it so that the space looks cohesive.
When remodeling a kitchen, should you start with the floors or the cabinets first?
This will depend on how your floor is installed. You must install your cabinets and counter first before you install floating floors. You have two options for glue-down and nail-down flooring. First, install your flooring. Then install your cabinets. Consult a professional to determine which option is best suited for your kitchen remodel.
Statistics
Experts also recommend setting aside 20 percent of your budget for surprises, including unpleasant demolition discoveries. One is water damage, the electricity that is not up to code, or other budget-spiking gotchas. (hgtv.com)
Followed by cabinet cost, labour, and appliance costs consume 20 percent each of your budget. (hgtv.com)
Your most significant cost investment for a kitchen remodel will usually be cabinets, typically comprising 25 percent of your budget. (hgtv.com)
According to Burgin, some hinges have this feature built-in, but it’s an add-on cost for other models of about $5 retail, adding up to $350 to $500 for an entire kitchen, depending on size. (hgtv.com)
In large firms, the commission charged by the GC ranges from 15 to 25 percent of the total job cost. (thespruce.com)

Kitchen Workbook: 8 Element of a Craftsman’s Kitchen
How To
Here are the 8 Basic Steps to Kitchen Remodeling for Beginners
This is how to begin a DFY Project for Beginners.
When remodeling your kitchen, there are three main steps. First, choose whether to replace or complete an entire remodel. The second is to decide which kitchen design suits your lifestyle the best. Third, choose between a DIY project or hiring professionals to complete the job.
The next step is to choose the type of kitchen that you want. Do you want a traditional, open-plan kitchen with cabinets countertops and appliances or a modern one? Maybe you prefer sleek modern designs and less storage. Do you want to add a breakfast bar or large island? The final step is to hire a professional to complete the installation.
Many homeowners feel overwhelmed by all the decisions that must be made before starting a kitchen remodel. There are many easy ways to start.
Decide if your goal is to remodel or replace. This is the first step. If you’re planning to gut the space and start from scratch, you’ll need to factor in the cost of demolition, new cabinets, countertops, appliances, flooring, and lighting.
Determine Your Budget – The first thing you should do is calculate how much you can spend on your kitchen remodel. This covers everything from labor and supplies costs to what you can afford.
Choose your Layout – Once you’ve decided how much you can afford, the next step will be to choose where you want to install your new kitchen. There are several different layouts, including open concept, peninsula, galley, L-shape, U-shape, and corner. Each layout has pros and cons. It is crucial to find the one that meets your needs.
Select Your Materials – Once you’ve chosen the layout of your kitchen, it’s finally time to select materials. This includes everything from countertops and cabinets to flooring, lighting, and lighting. There are many options. It is important that you research and choose the best material for your requirements.
Hire Professionals – Finally, once you’ve selected your materials, you’ll want to find a professional specializing in kitchen construction. A good contractor will ensure everything goes smoothly, from design to installation. You won’t have to worry about any issues during the project.
Enjoy! You’ve made it through the final stages of your kitchen remodel. Enjoy! If you love your new kitchen, you won’t mind spending hours cooking delicious meals. If you aren’t sure about the layout of your new kitchen, don’t be afraid to take some time to experience it. It will give you an idea of the value of your remodel.

Summary: You've just finished robbing a house in Saint Denis, when who should you bump into but our favourite outlaw? You plan on making your way home, but Mr Morgan wants to treat you first!
Warnings: Flirting, little bit of sexual tension, ice cream drippage, but mostly still fluff. Maybe more steamy fluff.
Pairing(s): Arthur Morgan x Reader, Arthur Morgan x You, Arthur Morgan x Y/N Can be read on AO3 too.
It sometimes took you by surprise how easy it was to sneak into these parties and events. But then you knew from experience how easy it was to practically disappear into the wallpaper, when it came to these wealthy families and their never-ending calendar of social events. Saint Denis was no different. With a mop cap to hide your face, a plain grey skirt, clean blouse and the apron tucked around your waist, none of the rich party guests gave you a second look.
A couple of the servants threw odd looks your way, perhaps trying to figure out who you were and why they had never seen you before, but none of them questioned it. Even when you left the garden party, pockets loaded with valuables, your strong, quick pace meant no one questioned where you were going.
Finally, after getting away from the tall red brick building and it’s sprawling gardens, you removed the mop cap and untied the apron. You slipped both into your pockets and began the long walk back to your pony, Pepper.
The hot sun baked the street, but with the marshy swamp around the area it wasn’t a pleasant warmth. The air was humid and heavy, and you felt a trickle of sweat run down your back. You wished you had brought a fan with you, but there hadn’t been any room for it. You decided to cut through one of the city’s parks, so you could splash your face with the water from the fountain there.
The leafy, green trees in the park gave some much needed shade, and you approached the large, marble fountain at the centre with it’s gawkish looking fish spewing water from their mouths. A couple of people were dotted about the park, some sat on the edge of the fountain itself, a few on the benches. You got a few disapproving looks when you splashed the cold water on the back of your neck and then pressed your now cooler hands against your face.
Satisfied that you could at least make it across the city without getting too sweaty during the journey, you wiped your hands on your skirt and began to walk to the other side of the park. Around the pathways and stone wall that marked the outer edge of the public garden, a cluster of shops and businesses lined the street.
You briefly glanced at the tailors, debating whether you could afford a new dress, considering your current one was a little worse for wear. A pretty light blue, summer dress caught your attention in the window. It had three quarter length sleeves, with white lace around the neckline and waist, and tiny daisies dotted the amongst the blue fabric. You pursed your lips on seeing the price. Sure, it wasn’t made of silk, satin or velvet, so you could probably scrape together enough for it, but then doubtless in the weeks that followed it would only get crumpled and dirty.
You sighed and were about to turn around to continue your walk, when a voice behind you made you jump, ‘Would look good on yer.’
Arthur chuckled when he saw your expression change rapidly from one of surprise to fear then to annoyance.
‘You’ve got to stop doing that, Arthur!’ You muttered.
‘You’ve got to stop being so god damn jumpy all the time.’
‘I’ll have you know-’ and you quickly looked around, checking to make sure Arthur was the only one who could hear you. ‘I’ve just robbed a house, so yes, I’m a little jumpy.’
‘Whatcha get?’
You grinned, ‘None of your damn business.’
He smiled and rubbed a hand against his chin, ‘Aw, and there was me going to treat ya, but if you got a good enough prize, guess you can treat yourself.’
‘Treat me? What do you mean?’
‘Oh, yer still interested?’
You rolled your eyes, ‘Well if you’re just going to play games with me, Mr Morgan, I best be on my way. Pepper is waiting for me and he’d probably be better company.’
You moved away from the shop and began walking down the street, but Arthur still fell in step beside you, ‘Don’ know why you like that pony so much, he’s a stubborn, scruffy thing.’
You smiled and arched your eyebrows, ‘Guess you would know a lot about that, Arthur!’
Arthur tried to bite back his smile, and looked down at his boots, ‘I ain’t too scruffy.’
‘He’s a sweetheart really, deep down,’ You replied, then quickly glanced away, warmth rushing to your cheeks when you realised that you very much felt the same way about the man next to you.
After a short walk Arthur came to a sudden halt and gestured to a small shop tucked underneath an archway, ‘Anyway, we’re here now.’
‘Where?’ You asked, looking up at the sign over the business. La Glace Parlour. You frowned, unable to gather why you were here and what Arthur had in mind. He sighed, shook his head, then pressed a hand to the small of your back and guided you to a small sign they had in the window. Though the feeling of his warm palm against the thin material of your dress, meant your mind could barely focus on the words in front of you.
‘Ice cream, pastries and light refreshments,’ you finally read, hoping that Arthur could not feel the slight shake that ran through you as he pulled his hand away from your back. You looked up at him.
He seemed to give up on your cluelessness, and went to open the door, the quiet afternoon interrupted by the bright ring of the bell over the door. ‘You still want raspberry?’
‘Um… Raspberry ice cream?’
‘Sure.’
‘I guess, but wait-’
He didn’t and walked quickly into the shop, leaving you alone on the street and fiddling with the frayed material of your sleeve. He wasn’t long though, soon returning holding a cone topped with a reddish pink swirl of ice cream and offered it to you.
‘Oh, thank you, Arthur.’ You took the cone from him, and licked the edge of the ice cream to stop it dribbling down. You relished the sharp, zingy flavour of the raspberries and the contrast between the cold sweet treat and the warmth of the afternoon sun. You mm-ed softly and smiled at Arthur, who quickly looked away, his cheeks reddening a little.
He shrugged, ‘S’alright, saw it when I was last here, remembered what you said. Figured I’d invite you into town at some point, but as you were already here…’
‘You ain’t getting one?’ you asked.
‘Nah.’
‘Well, you should try some of mine then, it’s really good,’ you offered the cone to him.
‘Nah, that’s all yours.’
‘Feel kind of bad that you’re not having any.’ You took another lick, before glancing at the man beside you. ‘This isn’t just because you’re a big gruff outlaw who can’t have ice cream, is it?’
He choked out a laugh then. ‘What?’
‘Don’t want to ruin your fearsome reputation by enjoying something sweet!’
Arthur managed to force out a strained sounding laugh, then rubbed the back of his head and scratched under the brim of his hat. ‘No, I… no, that’s not… I can enjoy...’ he tailed off, suddenly staring at the road, as though the dust of Saint Denis and the passing coaches were the most interesting things in the world.
Perhaps it was seeing him as equally flustered and speechless, as you were normally, that left you feeling a little bolder. You dipped your thumb into the ice cream and then brushed it over his cheek. You would have almost felt bad, but his startled expression only left you in a fit of giggles.
He tried to look annoyed, but failed miserably. He lifted up his bandana. ‘I could just wipe that off with this.’
‘Oh, but then you’d ruin my fun and my devious plan, Arthur Morgan!’
He smiled, wiped his thumb against the light red stain on his cheek and popped into this mouth. You immediately remembered why you were often speechless and flustered around Arthur. His sharp blue eyes stared into your own, and you knew you were biting your lower lip while a warm flush crept up your cheeks.
He pulled his thumb from his mouth with a pop and you felt your mouth drop open, before you managed to slam it shut. Arthur gave you a slight smirk, but his eyes dropped to your hand and he quickly reached out.
‘Careful, you’ll drop it!’ His hand grabbed your own and pulled it up, so you wouldn’t drop the cone in the dirt of the path. Little dribbles of red ice cream ran down your hand, and you unthinkingly darted your tongue out to lick up the melted cream.
‘Thank you for-’ You looked up at Arthur who was staring at you so fiercely, it almost made you forget the ice cream in your hand again. Even under the shadow of his hat, his eyes were dark and stormy, pupils blown wide. You weren’t sure if you were imagining it or if you had really seen his eyes drop to your pink stained lips.
He cleared his throat, then put his hand on your back once more, and forced you to walk ahead of him, ‘Come on, can’t be late back.’
-
Tilly let out a small ‘hm’ when you unwrapped the brown paper parcel you had found on your bedroll a few days later, and found the blue dress dotted with daisies therein.
‘Wonder who got you that!’ she said sarcastically.
You revelled in the warm feeling that entered the pit of your stomach and pulled the dress up to look at it properly. You’d have to think of a seriously good way of thanking Arthur Morgan for his kindness.

Impossible colors
Stygian colors: these are simultaneously dark and impossibly saturated. For example, to see "stygian blue": staring at bright yellow causes a dark blue afterimage, then on looking at black, the blue is seen as blue against the black, also as dark as the black. The color is not possible to achieve through normal vision, because the lack of incident light (in the black) prevents saturation of the blue/yellow chromatic signal (the blue appearance)..
Self-luminous colors: these mimic the effect of glowing material, even when viewed on a medium such as paper, which can only reflect and not emit its own light. For example, to see "self-luminous red": staring at green causes a red afterimage, then on looking at white, the red is seen against the white and may seem to be brighter than the white.
Hyperbolic colors: these are impossibly highly saturated. For example, to see "hyperbolic orange": staring at bright cyan causes an orange afterimage, then on looking at orange, the resulting orange afterimage seen against the orange background may cause an orange color purer than the purest orange color that can be made by any normally-seen light. Likewise, staring at a bright magenta template may result in an impossibly highly saturated green afterimage.
[Then there is the claim some people may naturally be able to view mixtures of primary colors that do not produce a color between them on the spectrum, but instead, something like this:]
"Some people may be able to see the color "Yellow–Blue" in this image by letting their eyes cross so that both + symbols are on top of each other."
[There are some brief moments when I tried this where the result is the two colors "overlapping" in a way that is hard to describe. Huh.]
For red-and-green, some saw an even field of the new color; some saw a regular pattern of just-visible green dots and red dots; some saw islands of one color on a background of the other color. Some of the volunteers for the experiment reported that afterward, they could still imagine the new colors for a period of time.
[I study biotechnology, so I also sometimes do research on silly things like this for fun, and while, in my opinion, this can all be attributed to eye strain/ cone and rod cell fatigue, it still is interesting to think about these "new colors" and their place in, say, sci-fi works as a means to illustrate an alien species/augmented humans or whatever's enhanced perception.]
[Of course the answer to why I put all this on Kaze's blog is obvious. All the ridiculous colors for the crayon bullets. And nobody can stop me.]
[Headcanon: Windarians can see more colors than a regular human and WILL point out how your smooth gray wallpaper is actually an unsightly mix of blues, greens, reds and yellows. Who the hell mixed your paint? Sorry not sorry.]

Sitting in the driver's seat of her car, she listened to her brother ramble on and on about only two subjects: this new girlfriend named Suzie and Steve Harrington. Every time he brought the ramblings back to his fluffy-haired older friend, she found her mind wandering. Steve Harrington had proven himself to be much more different than she had first perceived. When she had moved to Hawkins, she had thought him to be an egotistical asshole who only cared about a title and he had proven her right through his actions until one day when he suddenly just wasn’t. Suddenly, Steve was the boy who was dating Nancy Wheeler and hanging around with Jonathan Byers. He no longer was ‘King Steve’ (the king title being passed to Billy Hargrove), he no longer had Tommy H. and Carol as his two annoying shadows. Ophelia wasn’t quite sure what happened between the three, but it must have been pretty big.
Despite the change in his ranking within the high school, she still didn’t fully trust him. His past actions went against everything she believed in. She believed in kindness and loyalty, not getting into fist-fights, bullying and ignoring people just because you perceive yourself as better than them. Maybe that’s why they never seemed to become friends for the majority of the time he went to high school.
“Ophelia,” Her brother’s call of her name snapped her from her thoughts of her history with her brother’s friend. “Are you even listening to me?” He asked her when she glanced at him quickly. She pressed on the brake of her car, getting ready to turn into the bustling mall parking lot.
“Yes, of course I’m listening!” She lied, looking back in front of her.
“Really? Then why haven’t you been answering me when I’ve asked how Steve’s been doing?” Dustin perked an eyebrow at his older sister. Sure, her and Steve Harrington were not friends through most of Steve’s high school career, but that had changed when Dustin had brought them together to help capture Dart, leading to Ophelia’s second go around with the Upside down. He had changed once again. With Nancy Wheeler dumping in at Tina’s Halloween party and then running off with Jonathan, she had seen Steve once again change his spots. After fighting the Upside Down alongside him, their friendship blossomed.
“Because, we’re about to see him so you can actually ask him for yourself, Dipwad.” She commented, trying to get Dustin off her case. All she needed was for him to know just how she felt about the dopey, hair-obsessed boy. Sure, their sudden and shocking friendship was not the last of Steve’s changing. Through their growing friendship, she had watched as he changed into the dorky, clumsy, parent of six. Sure, he lost his charm, but somehow, his lack of charm captured Ophelia’s heart. Maybe it was finally seeing the true Steve Harrington that made her heart skip a beat every time she so much as heard his name. Or maybe it was the way he developed a new charm that the girls of Hawkins have yet to fall for, but no matter how it happened, she definitely fell head over heels for him.
“I don’t want him to know I’m worried about him.” Dustin exclaimed, his eyes nearly bugging out of his head as he gripped his hat covered curls in frustration. Ophelia gave him a look as she pulled into a parking spot, turning the car off swiftly.
“He’s fine, Dusty,” She reassured him, pulling the keys from the ignition. “Why are you so worried about him anyway?” She posed the question. Sure, he had been a little bummed out since he hadn’t gotten into any schools he applied for, and he was a little upset about having to get a crappy part-time job, but it wasn’t anything to make Ophelia too concerned. Of course, it hurt her a little hearing him talking about himself the way he does, but what hurts her the most was the little game him and Robin were playing. Seeing him shamelessly (and horribly) flirting with girl after girl who ventured into Scoops Ahoy was poison to her heart. Each wink he gave the girls was like a needle injecting the next dose right into her valves, wanting to kill the beating organ.
“Between you and me, I think he’s lost his mojo a little, Leah,” Dustin whispered to her over the hood of her car as they climbed out. She gave him a look that told him that he was crazy, but he just challenged it with a knowing look. “He hasn’t had a date since Nancy left him and he doesn’t go to parties. He’s lost his confidence and, in turn, lost his mojo.” Dustin explained.
“He didn’t lose his mojo, Dustin. He’s changed, he’s grown and he’s trying to figure himself out and he hasn’t tried to get a date since Nancy left him.” She pointed out, trying to cease her brother’s worries. Sure, he’s flirted, but he hasn’t actually put himself out there. Ophelia knows the difference between flirting and actually wanting a relationship all too well. Her trusting nature had made her fall privy to people just wanting attention or sex, but on the flipside, her trusting nature had let her experience some of the most beautiful relationships - most of them which had turned sour towards the end, but none-the-less, were still a beautiful heart-break.
“I’m still going to worry about him.” Dustin remarked as they walked into the mall. Ophelia hummed, dropping her hand on top of his hat covered head, ruffling it slightly before falling to rest on the bookbag he wore on his back. She made him stop for a second as she dropped her keys in her purse, pulling her wallet out.
“Alright, you head over to Scoops, here’s some money,” She told Dustin, handing him a couple of bills. “Steve is going to try and give you free ice cream, tell him no and give him the money or put it in the tip jar. Trust me, it has been my entire summer.” She instructed him. Admittedly, her heart would soar like an eagle in the sky when Steve would push her hand full of money, insisting that it was on the house every time she wanted an ice cream, thinking that he might just actually feel the same way she did, her desperate heart filling her mind with hopes that would quickly cloud over with dark thunder clouds when he would send flirty statements over the counter at the next girl.
“Wait, you’re not coming with me?” Dustin furrowed his brows, taking the money.
“I will be there in a few, I’m heading over to work to check the schedule, and Brett said he needed to talk to me about something anyway.” She told him, stuffing her wallet back in her purse. Dustin narrowed his eyes at her at the name.
“Whose Brett?” He cocked his head to the side. He had heard the name before, most likely from one of Ophelia’s friends gushing about random guys while they were locked up in her room.
“He works with me, he’s also the captain of the hockey team - Melissa never shut up about him in grade nine,” She answered him, patting his shoulder. Dustin hummed at this, nodding. He looked at the bills she handed him, counting them to see how much she gave him. “I won’t be long, Brett usually writes my hours down for me anyway.” Told him before walking away from him and towards the escalators, heading towards Tower Records. Dustin didn’t pay the information any attention as he made his way towards Scoops.
His sneakers squeaked against the tiled floor as he looked around the mall in awe. He hadn’t seen it yet, only heard about it in Ophelia’s letters to him while he was at camp, but nothing she said could do the actual thing justice. The bright neon signs, the high-end stores. The sleek glass in the ceiling letting the sun provide natural light. The fountain, the hustle and bussle. It was great. Walking into the sailor themed ice cream parlor, he took in the blue and white striped wallpaper and the cheery sailor tone playing.
Steve was nowhere to be seen when he walked in, so he fell into line behind the two people standing at the counter. He waited patiently, gripping the now crumpled bills in his hands. He could see the girl behind the counter with short blonde hair what had the softest wave to it. Her blue eyes looked bored and unenthusiastic. “Have a nice day.” She drawled, her eyes vacant of joy as she handed the two people their ice cream cones.
“Thank you.” The girl smiled at the blonde before the pair of them left, happily licking their ice cream. Dustin smiled, knowing he was so close to seeing Steve again. The girl behind the counter pressed her hands into it, leaning on them as she turned her uninterested gaze on the beaming Dustin who showed off his toothless smile.
“Hi.” Dustin basically bounced in his spot from excitement.
“Hi.” She drawled, not nearly as excited as Dustin was. Silence passed between them as they looked at each other. Dustin’s smile never filtered and the blonde’s expression never changed. Dustin opened his mouth, gesturing towards himself awkwardly.
“I’m Dustin.” He introduced himself, thinking that Steve had told his co-worker all about him. He told almost anyone who would listen about how excited he was to get back home and see Steve so he expected nothing less from his older friend.
“I’m Robin.” The blonde replied, a forced smile on her lips. She really just wanted him to order his ice cream and move along so that maybe the day could go by faster.
“Pleasure to meet you, uh-” He told her politely. Much like she wanted him to hurry up, Dustin just wanted this to be done with so he could see his friend. “Is-is he here?” Dustin asked with a gesture of his hand, his bright eyes scanning over the space behind the counter.
“Is who here?” Robin asked, somewhat intrigued with this strange child. He was so happy and cheerful, his eyes bright. Just then, the swinging door leading to the backroom burst open making them snap their attention towards it. With a squeak of his sneaker, Steve was there, his eyes wide with excitement, just knowing that his friend was out in the parlor.
“Henderson,” He stepped away from the door, raising his arms in the air, a wide smile on his face at the sight of the curly haired teen. Dustin started to laugh, pointing towards the older boy as his smile grew, his eyes squinting from it. “Henderson! He’s back,” Steve jumped around as he rushed around the counter, trying to reach his best friend. “He’s back!” He basically yelled, pointing to Dustin. He glanced at Robin as if she was supposed to care. Robin clued into just who the strange child was at the last name. Ophelia’s little brother. Their cheery happiness was almost uncanny.
“I’m back! You got the job!” Dustin exclaimed.
“I got the job,” Steve matched Dustin’s enthusiasm, making a trumpet noise while pretending to play one. “Hey, oh!” He said as they performed an intricate handshake. Robin watched the two with raised eyebrows as they pretended to be fighting with lightsabers before Dustin pretended to stab Steve, prompting Steve to pretend his guts were falling out. They finished the handshake, looking at each other and laughing. Steve rested his arm on the cooler beside him, both of them sighing and coming down from their laughter.
“How many children are you friends with?” Robin asked, leaning forward on her hands more, eyeing Steve. He certainly wasn’t the same Steve she knew in high school. Steve looked at her, sighing before sniffling as his smile shrunk. Swiping his finger under his nose, he gestured towards Robin with his hand, giving Dustin a look.
“So, hey, uh,” Steve started, looking around the parlor, placing both his hands on his hips and kicking his foot out. The musical laughter of the girl he was almost positive he would see today was missing. “Where’s your sister? I thought she’d come in with you.” He asked, looking at Dustin. Dustin shrugged, looking around the parlor to take it all in.
“She said she’d be here soon, she had to stop by the store to check the schedule and apparently some guy wanted to talk to her about something there,” Dustin told him, once again not thinking much of it. “I think she said his name was like Brent or something, I don’t know - I wasn’t really listening.” Dustin admitted. Steve’s heart sunk slightly, floating slowly to the bottom of his feet like a paper falling to the floor.
“You mean Brett?” Robin spoke up, her eyebrow perked curiously. One thing about her not being in the popular crowd, she learned to observe and gather her information that way. She could clearly see how Steve felt about Ophelia. Whenever she came into the store on her break, his brown eyes would light up like a kid on Christmas. He would constantly bring her up. He could be scrubbing the staff toilet and find a way to bring Ophelia up. She was almost positive that Steve was head over heels for her.
“Yeah-yeah, that sounds right.” Dustin nodded, not paying much attention as he scanned over the ice cream tubs in the cooler.
“Oh man, that guy’s been hooked on her for like two years, I heard he took the job at Tower Records because he heard that she was going to be working there.” Robin informed them. Steve could have sworn he had died right then and there. He felt strangely possessive and protective over the eldest Henderson since she squared up against Billy and lasted pretty well until she ended up on the floor next to Steve, knocked out. The sight of her beat up face was the last thing Steve saw before he finally clocked out.
If he was being completely honest, he had developed a crush on her way before Nancy. He would always see her floating around the halls of the school with a bright smile, always saying hi to everyone. It was like she was friends with the entire school population. You’d be hard pressed to find someone who didn’t like Ophelia Henderson, but somehow, Steve hung out with the only two people who didn’t. They despised the girl. Thought she was too nice, too good even though everyone at school has seen her knocking shot after shot back at parties. When he had developed feelings for Nancy, he had thought his feelings for Ophelia were long gone, but seeing her taking no shit from Billy and fighting the Demodogs alongside him last year proved him semi-wrong, instead of a crush, he had a fierce need to protect her and keep her way from any guy who he deemed not right for her (which was pretty much all of them).
As if on cue, she floated into the parlor with a large smile on her face. “Hey everyone!” She cheered, walking up to her brother and Steve. Steve looked at her, his own smile stretching on his face. He could practically feel his face light up at the sight of her. She smiled brightly at him, rolling up onto the balls of her feet excitedly.
“Hey, Leah, Dustin said Brett wanted to talk to you, what’d he say?” Robin asked, curious to see what the development of the love triangle that was brewing. Only an idiot couldn’t see that Steve and Ophelia both liked each other and you would have to be living under a rock not to realize that Brett Morris also chased after the oblivious girl.
Ophelia smiled wider - if that was even possible - at the question, her eyes lightning up with excitement. Steve gazed at her expression, wishing he could have caused it. “He wants to hang out with me, as a date!” She exclaimed, walking between her brother and Steve to stand in front of the counter. Steve wanted to die at this news. Brett Morris was a loser - a scrawny, entitled loser who flew through girls like crazy. He had no place going on a date with someone as pure and sweet as Ophelia. He wouldn’t appreciate the beauty of her eyes, swirling with different colours and sparkling with light. Would he fully understand just how precious her laughter was?
“Really? That’s awesome.” Robin smiled at the excited girl.
“Yeah, I know! I have to go get a new outfit,” She gushed, whirling around to look at Dustin and Steve. “I’ll be back later to get him, do not hype him up on sugar, understand be Harrington?” She told him, not sticking around long enough to get an answer, instead rushing back out of the parlor. Steve pressed his lips into a fine line, his nose flared. Robin looked at him with an amused smile, ready for the chaos of a love triangle.
***
Ophelia sauntered back into Scoops, looking at the rush to see Robin manning the counter alone, Steve and her brother nowhere to be seen. “Hey, Robin, where did Steve take my brother?” She asked as Erica and her group of Erica clones walked out. Robin looked towards her, a stressed out look in her eyes.
“They’re in the back,” She told her, nudging her head towards the door as she walked towards it herself. Ophelia rushed around the counter, following Robin into the back room as she burst through the door. “All right, babysitting time is over, you need to get in there.” Robin told Steve walking into the room.
“Yeah, and it’s time for us to go Dustin.” Ophelia told her brother. The two girls stopped, looking at the two boys. Steve backed up to stand beside Dustin who was at the table, facing them. Their eyes were wide and scared, almost as if they were caught doing something they shouldn’t have been. Steve held a half-eaten banana in his hand, his cheeks pushed out with bits of banana in them, mid-chew. She looked at them oddly, knowing that nothing good could come of this.
“Hey! My board,” Robin exclaimed, whirling around to look at Steve and Dustin. Ophelia looked over at her to see her standing by a board on the wall that seemed to hold the Russian characters on it. “That was important data, Shitbirds!” Ophelia rolled her eyes at that. It wasn’t important data to her, in fact, maybe now that the board was erased, the game would stop and Ophelia could find the anecdote for the poison.
“I guarantee you, what we’re doing is way more important than your data.” Dustin told her, earning a glare from his sister. Steve nodded along, eating the rest of his banana and tossing the peel to the table in front of Dustin.
“Oh yeah, and how do you know these Russians are up to no good anyways?” She challenged, walking to stand in front of the table.
“What Russians?” Ophelia asked, suddenly very concerned. Steve and Dustin looked at each other with startled looks.
“Your brother intercepted a Russian transmission using some sort of radio and they plan to translate the transmission and become American Heroes.” Robin told her. Ophelia nodded slowly, taking the information in.
“How does she know about the Russians?” Dustin whispered to Steve.
“I don’t know.” Steve spoke through a mouth full of banana, shrugging his shoulders. His brown eyes were wide, his eyebrows shooting up into his hairline. Under other circumstances, Ophelia would think he looked cute, but not when they were trying to translate a Russian transmission.
“You told her about-”
“It wasn’t me!” Steve defended himself, cutting Dustin off.
“Hello! I can hear you, actually I can hear everything. You are both extremely loud,” Robin broke the news to them. “You think you have evil Russians plotting against our country, on tape, and you’re trying to translate it, but haven’t figured out a single word because you didn’t realize that Russian’s use a completely different alphabet than we do,” She rattled off. Dustin and Steve looked at each other in shock before looking back at Robin. “Is that about right?” She asked. Ophelia stepped up, standing beside her. If these two idiots were getting into something then so was she. They were pretty much a package deal at this point.
Robin lunged forward, trying to swipe the tape off the table, but Steve grabbed it before her. “Woah - Oh! What do you think you’re doing?” Steve asked her with a crazed look in his eyes. Ophelia raised her eyebrows at it.
“I wanna hear it!” Robin bounced slightly, showing more enthusiasm that she ever does when doing her job.
“I do too.” Ophelia told them, walking over and pulling out a chair from the table, sitting down in the spot in front of Steve. Steve shook his head at her.
“Why?” Both Dustin and Steve asked at the same time, mostly directed to Robin. They could see why Ophelia would want to, since she had been by Dustin’s side since Will’s disappearance.
“Cause maybe I can help,” Robin shrugged. “I am fluent in four languages, you know?” She disclosed to them proudly. Ophelia looked over at her, impressed.
“Russian?” Dustin asked, intrigued. Robin leaned closer to him.
“Ou-yay are-yay umb-day.” She told him. Steve and Dustin looked excited, making Ophelia shake her head, slapping her hand to her forehead.
“Oh-ho-ho!” Steve exclaimed.
“Holy shit!” Dustin smiled wide, thinking that she actually spoke Russian to them. Robin straightened up, her face blank while Ophelia was questioning her brother’s sanity.
“That was pig-latin, Digus,” She told him, making their smiles fall. Steve looked down at Dustin, slapping him with the banana peel that he had picked up for some reason, muttering ‘idiot’ under his breath, not wanting to admit that he also thought Robin was speaking Russian. Robin sat across the table from Ophelia. “But, I speak Spanish and French and Italian, and I’ve been in band for twelve years. My ears are little geniuses, trust me.” Robin argued her case.
“I also speak fluent French and a little latin and, don’t forget, I’ve saved you two before.” Ophelia reminded them, giving them a knowing look. Steve and Dustin looked at each other, unsure if they should let them help. Steve definitely didn’t want to let Ophelia help. It was too dangerous, it went against every fiber in his being telling him to protect her.
“Come on, it’s your turn to sling ice cream and my turn to translate - I don’t even want credit, I’m just bored!” Robin groaned to Steve, sliding the ice cream scoop across the table towards him. The bell from the counter dinged, the customer wanting service. Steve looked at her hand before looking at Dustin. The bell dinged again making him sigh and grab the scoop, placing the tape back on the table again. He glanced at Dustin again as the younger boy shrugged, not seeing how the two girls couldn’t help them since they have yet to figure out anything so far. Shifting his eyes to Robin, seeing her pleading with him, but what made him bend like a hot spoon was when he looked at Ophelia. Her big eyes looking at him hopefully but with just enough glare that dared him to try and say no to them.
“Fine, you two can help.” He grumbled, making his way out the door. Robin and Ophelia cheered, Robin scooping the tape recorder up. Steve huffed, defeated. He didn’t like the idea of her being involved with this. The past two years, he wasn’t able to stop her from getting involved with the Upside Down because she knew about it before him both times; this time, he knew about it before her so he had thought he could keep her out of it, but boy was he wrong.

A Fervid Greeting
Chapter Warnings: N/A
Word Count: 7260
Chris was watching the bacon and eggs cook as Seungmin and Changbin quietly watched TV when he heard his cell phone ring. He picked it up from the counter. Seeing the contact name and number, he answered. "Chris Bang speaking."
"Morning, Chris." Said police chief Jinyoung Park. "I didn't wake you up, did I?"
"No, sir. What's happening?"
"If you tune into the news, you can find out. I recorded it for you, so you don't have to turn on the TV and wait for them to repeat the message."
"Well," Chris looked over his shoulder. "A couple of the boys are watching a show right now, so that was awfully kind of you."
Jinyoung laughed. "I'm sending it to you now. I expect you boys to be at the station by seven."
"That shouldn't be a problem, sir."
"Good. See you then, Double Knock."
"Until then, sir." Chris ended the call, then stuffed his phone into his jeans. He turned around to face the living room and felt his phone vibrate; Chief Jinyoung had sent the video. "Changbin, Seungmin!" They glanced at their leader.
"Breakfast is ready. Come and fix your plates while I wake up Felix and Hyunjin. We need to be at city hall by seven." Said Chris.
"What happened?" Asked Changbin, stopping at the part of the counter closest to the living room as Chris came closer and Seungmin passed them to enter the kitchen.
"I don't know, but it's on the news." Chris paused beside the couch. Seungmin was busy making his plate. "Though, the chief did just send me a video of the news report." Chris took out his phone, swiped to view the message, and held it out.
Changbin took it. "Thanks, hyung."
"Don't mention it. Be right back." Chris said, and Changbin nodded. Changbin set down the phone on the island and took a plate from the overhead cupboards as Seungmin sat at the island and played the video. Chris left the living room and skidded across the antiqued brown wooden floor that was also in the kitchen and upstairs hallway.
Unlike the white drywall of the entrance and upstairs areas, the living room had wallpaper that was red like a wilted rose and patterned like the fur of a tabby cat. Its carpet was tawny brown, and matching light absorbing curtains were distributed in every room of the house. The only other rooms that had carpet were the bedrooms, studio and dojo. The doors of Bang Manor were simple: white with silver door knobs. But the black front door had an elegant, translucent window arch at its top. Matching window panels were on either side of that door.
Chris grasped the wooden handrail that matched the floor. The banisters were black metal rods, the newels the same wood as the handrail. He jogged up and walked to the first door on his left. Chris knocked before entering and heard Felix mewl. Chris flicked on the light and watched the boy pull himself up and stretch his arms with a silent yawn.
The bedroom was full of stuffed animals of every size and smelled of laundry and Doritos, its walls white except for one. Most of the plushies were squished into the hammock that hung from the far left corner of the room and stretched across the far wall, while others were on the bookshelf that had no books, it and the closet with folding doors on the right wall, and more were on the floor near his bed. His bedding was black, the pillows and underside of the blanket crimson red. The wall his bed was horizontal to had a mural of a fiery plain with a mountain of gold and jewels surrounded by burning forest. A flaming sword stuck out from the treasure, and fiery lightning rained upon the scene from black clouds speckled with embers.
"Time to wake up, Felix. We've got a meeting at city hall in an hour. There's eggs and bacon in the kitchen. Changbin has my phone, so you can catch up on what's happening." Chris said.
"OK. Thanks." The boy mumbled, rubbing his eyes. Chris left the room, closing the door behind him. He continued rightwards and knocked on the third and final door on that side of the hall before opening the door and turning on the light.
Hyunjin's bedroom walls were white, and the farthest had black illustrations depicting a red eyed figure sitting at the edge of a rooftop, looking onto the city below. An identical figure stalked a lanky figure with yellow eyes wielding a bloody knife. Finally, the red eyed man stood above the crumpled body of the skinny man, the assassin's dripping red hidden blade visible from his left sleeve. Blood spilled from the corpse and splattered onto the wall, which was patterned like brick. Above these scenes was a mantra in red: I am not blind.
There was a shrine to the right side of the room with framed pictures of each of the Stray Kids, along with a closet with folding doors. The five white candles were unlit, and the tea cup was empty, spare for the specks of leaves. Chris smelled the mirth Hyunjin had burned and Hyunjin's scent of lemongrass. His bedding was black but wasn't as cozy looking as Felix's, the pillowcases striped black and white. Hyunjin let out a whine as he stirred.
"Hyunjin, we have to be at city hall in an hour. There's breakfast in the kitchen, and the Chief sent me a video of what's going on you can look at with Felix." Said Chris.
"OK, I'm coming." Replied Hyunjin. Chris nodded, then left the bedroom and closed the door. He went downstairs and heard Felix's door open. Felix, in a loose orange shirt and black pyjama pants, crossed the hall to the bathroom between Chris' and Changbin's rooms. The second bathroom was through the first door on the right wall of the living room, the studio and dojo doors following it, to the left.
As he passed through the living room, Chris saw the television had been turned off. Chris ran a hand along the arm of the black couch. The loveseat and recliner matched the couch, but the recliner was made of leather. The coffee table had a black wooden frame with a foggy glass surface. He observed the picture in a simple black frame that was above the electric fireplace, behind the loveseat and recliner. Posed formally in their hero suits with mayor Brandon Gorge and the police chief before a blue backdrop were the Stray Kids.
Chris recalled how nervous they were before they were declared heroes with real powers instead of vigilantes with gimmicks up their sleeves. He remembered how they cried on the nights leading up to that day, afraid they would be falsely accused and imprisoned just for acting upon what came naturally to them. There wasn't even a court hearing: just a meeting at the city hall where the press was allowed an audience. While there were negative opinions, the general outlook of the public was loud enough for the city officials to properly analyse the evidence in front of them. This morning had a similar atmosphere, even though Chris hadn't seen the news report.
Changbin and Seungmin sat at the island. They each had a glass of orange juice. Chris met Changbin's eyes as he walked in. "Chan, this is pretty serious." Changbin said, tapping the cellphone that was face up on the counter. "You should really have a look at this."
"I will, Changbin." Replied Chris. "Let me fix my plate, and I'll do just that." Changbin gave a nod and stuffed his face with more bacon as Chan walked over and got a plate. He served himself, then sat beside Changbin and ate while he unlocked his phone and played the video.
The news anchor greeted the viewers and stated it was 6:00 o'clock, February 8, 2020. She said they would begin the news hour with breaking news. Residents of the Elizabeth Apartments had reported sounds of distress from the room next door to police around 3:15, that morning. (Chris heard Hyunjin come downstairs and briefly watched him enter the bathroom.) The victim was twenty year old Faith Lawson and the suspect her boyfriend, twenty one year old Han Jisung.
The neighbors who reported the kidnapping said the following to their news correspondent, some time after police arrived. (Felix entered the kitchen and said 'good morning'. Changbin and Seungmin answered him.) A middle aged husband and wife were shown with the male reporter outside of the apartments. (Felix got his plate and began to put food on it.)
The woman said they were awakened by Faith's sudden screaming. They heard Jisung tell Faith that she should 'Be still and quiet, and it won't be so bad.'. The husband said that they heard the couple having intercourse, the night before. (Hyunjin came out of the bathroom and walked into the kitchen and greeted the boys, who responded. He got a plate and filled it as Felix sat beside Seungmin.)
When the reporter asked if Faith and Jisung had ever fought, the husband and wife said 'no', that they seemed like a normal, happy couple. (Hyunjin took the empty stool beside Felix.) The video cut back to the newsroom. She said that the police had released censored photos of the crime scene and surveillance footage. She gave a graphic violence warning, then the video was played.
The camera in the lobby caught Jisung finishing his flight down the stairs, Faith over his shoulder. She was bound at her wrists and ankles with zip ties. Her forehead bled, an excessively large black bar edited to cover her wound. A copper coloured metal device with a detailed, key-like handle kept her mouth open. The outdoor camera showed a loitering black car. The driver opened the back door on the passenger side, then Jisung forced Faith in the backseat before entering behind her as slamming the door shut as the car sped away.
The reporter was shown again. She said that the car had arrived just minutes before Jisung was recorded fleeing the crime scene. The license plate of the vehicle had been captured, but the car hadn't been found. The screen swiped left to shows list of information about the car, driver, suspect and victim. Along with information already stated in the report, the woman said that the driver wore a copper coloured mask with an upside down cone shape carved into the forehead.
The anchor announced they would now show the photos. The scene was in the bedroom, the focus on the bed. The bedding was a mess, blood, saliva and urine on the sheets and pillows. The reporter said that police theorized that Jisung had woken Faith and struck her head with the device that was seen gagging her. The anchor stated that if anyone had any information on where the vehicle or Jisung had been after the kidnapping to contact the police as the number was shown at the bar at bottom of the screen. Then the video ended.
Chris blew hot air through his lips. "I'm surprised how much information the police released, but I guess they did it to warn the public." Seungmin and Hyunjin nodded, humming. "That's fucking scary." Everyone nodded and gave noises of agreement.
"Do you mind if I watch it again?" Asked Hyunjin. "I didn't see all of it."
"Of course." Chris answered, and pushed his phone into Hyunjin's hand. He played if again, Felix looking over to watch too. While the video played again, Seungmin rose from his stool, carried his plate to the sink and washed it.
"I wonder if this Jisung guy has a criminal record?" Pondered Seungmin.
"I guess we'll find out, when we get there." Replied Chris.
"He doesn't look like a criminal, at least." Commented Felix.
"That doesn't say anything about him, personality wise." Hyunjin said, as Seungmin seated himself again and Changbin rose to wash his plate. "Lots of bad people look unsuspicious."
"You make a point."
"Obviously, there's more going on than a simple kidnapping." Said Seungmin. "Whatever he used to subdue Faith with, it's some kind of medieval torture device."
"Yep yep," Replied Chris. "But it's nearly impossible to tell what it is, since we've only seen in use."
"I doubt the police have any guesses, either." Changbin said, returning to his chair. "And since we don't know where the car is, we'll have a harder time tracking them down."
"All we can do is find out what else the police know and do our best to find these guys and get Faith out of danger before it's too late." Chris said, and the other boys nodded. Soon enough, they all finished eating. Hyunjin volunteered to wash the dishes, so the boys went upstairs and into their room to change. While Seungmin's room was the third on the right side, Changbin's was first on the left and Chris' the second.
Chris' room had white walls, the left having posters of the Stray Kids illustrated like comic book characters by artists from a big comic book company. Individual portraits and group shots were scattered around the wall in an appealing way. Chris always chuckled when he looked upon certain posters. He had a lot of plushies in his his room, though not nearly as many as Felix had. They were neatly displayed on a bookshelf that had some books, the shelf on the wall opposite of the poster wall. Chris' bed was vertical to the far wall, the closet next to the shelf.
Chris opened his closet and took his suit from within. He removed his steel blue pyjama top and black pyjama pants that had thin white lines to make a checked pattern. Chris stepped into the matte charcoal one-piece spandex enforced with a thin layer of cotton for comfort and a cowl collar. The pitch black kneepads and elbow guards were enforced with steel-every members' gear was. The biceps, thighs and each side of the rib cage had three glossy black, diagonal strips of fake alligator skin tipped like spikes.
Chris brought out his gauntlets, which were made with glossy black leather and had steel knuckles and backside. The gloves had the stripes from the one-piece, except these looped around to the bottom. Chris took out and put on a black leather belt that had two pouches on either side. Its buckle was matte silver and had the letters DKC in black. Chris found his black leather boots, which came up to the middle of his shins, had a polished finish and had steel toes and soles. The bottom of the shoes had very good grips and were well padded, so Chris was able to be sneaky, despite the steel components. Finally, Chris put on his black leather cape that went a couple of inches past his knees and was tied to the collar of his costume with a lumberman's knot.
Chris exited his bedroom and saw Felix's bedroom door was halfway open. He saw Changbin behind the younger boy, helping an audibly struggling Felix zip up his black leather, full length sleeved shirt with a straight band collar. Felix had black leather pants held up by a black leather belt with a simple golden buckle with a pouch on the back, and kneepads. He had black leather shoes with half inch heels and steel toes and black leather fingerless gloves with his palms exposed.
"Ow, ow, ow!" Cried Felix, reaching a hand back and bending backwards a little.
"Well, if you stopped moving every time I move the zipper a milometer, you wouldn't be in pain and I could actually do this, today! Aish!" Changbin bickered. "Now straighten up." Felix complied, still whining.
"I should be able to do this in one go if..." Changbin jerked at the zipper, grunting. Felix continued to whimper, and cringed up his face. "If... argh, come on."
"Changbin," Chris said, walking into the room as Changbin and Felix watched him come in. "Let me take care of it."
"Yes, thank you." Changbin said, stepping aside, shaking out his hands. His costume had a waist length cape over his right shoulder that was white with a royal blue underside. It had a golden stripe along the edge and was attached to Changbin by an elastic strap under his arm. His long sleeved blouse with a Peter Pan collar and his harem pants were royal blue with white cuffs, the shirt's buttons and the two decorative buttons on the crotch white. He wore white leather boots with a golden stripe over the folded top parts of the shoes.
Chris came up behind Felix and grabbed onto the zipper. "OK, when I say 'three', suck in your guts."
"Wait, won't my shirt rip when I breathe out?" Felix replied, looking over his shoulder with doe eyes.
"If your powers are still working, no." Chris laughed, and so did Felix and Changbin. "Ready?"
"Yeah."
"OK: one... two... three!" Zip! Pop, crack!
"Aw," Felix said, right hand on his left shoulder as he rolled the joint and turned to look at his hyungs. "Did you guys hear that?"
Changbin and Chris chuckled, nodding. Chris said, "We did, yeah. You feeling alright, 'lix?"
"Yeah," Felix nodded. "I'm good. Ouch."
"Your breathing feels OK?"
"Yeah, feels fine, mate."
"OK, good!" Chris patted Felix's left shoulder, and Felix flinched, contorting his expression in reaction. "Sorry."
"You're fine..."
"Come on." Chris said, nodding to the exit. Felix gave a small nod as he and Changbin followed Chris out. Chris almost ran into Hyunjin, who was busy fiddling with the white cloth wrappings beneath his fingerless, black leather gloves. They jumped as Hyunjin's forearm brushed Chris'. Changbin and Felix stopped for a moment to take it what happened before continuing.
"Whoa! Sorry, Hyunjin." Said Chris, subconsciously raising his hand to gesture.
"It's fine, hyung." Hyunjin replied. "I wasn't looking where I was going." Hyunjin wore a sleeveless black shirt with a very low tuxedo collar that exposed the middle of his chest. It didn't take much movement for his nipples and toned but flat belly to be exposed. He wore black tights, black knee pads each with a tiny, four pointed white star, a belt with three pouches on his right hip, a jedok geom and dan geom with black handles on the other, and lightweight, all black slip-on shoes.
Chris massaged Hyunjin's shoulder. "Ah, it's fine. Come on." Hyunjin nodded, then followed Chris downstairs. He heard Seungmin leave his room as they went. Once at the bottom of the stairs, Chris looked back to watch Seungmin descend.
His costume consisted of a plum purple jumpsuit with long sleeves and gold cuffs, and a cape that ended halfway down his back. The cape was held by a clasp shaped like a hickory brown clover outlined in gold, and hickory brown slip-on shoes. Seeing that Hyunjin was on his way, Chris proceeded to lead the group outside. They walked left, to the garage attached to the house. "Why are we going to the garage from outside instead of from the dojo?" Seungmin asked.
Chris laughed. "Oh yeah." Hyunjin and Felix laughed. "Oh well! We're outside now." They arrived at the garage door and Chris pressed the button on his keychain to open it. When it was up just enough, they ducked under it and dashed to the black van with their logo on both sides.
"It's so dark in here." Said Felix. Chris unlocked the car, and it honked as its headlights flashed.
As everyone climbed inside the vehicle, Seungmin said, "Aren't you basically—?"
"—Oh yeah." The car rumbled with laughter as the doors were closed and the boys buckled up.
"Man, you really aren't a morning person, are you, Felix?" Said Hyunjin, as Chris started the engine.
"No," Felix shook his head, still smiling. "I'm really not."
Chris pulled out of the garage as Changbin ruffled Felix's hair. Felix gave a cry of protest and reached for his hand. Even though Felix had it, Changbin didn't let up. "Ah, but you're still cute."
"Stooop, oh my God." Felix playfully thrashed in his seat, kicking Seungmin's seat.
"Ah! You stop!" Seungmin shouted, reaching back to swipe at Felix's legs. As the Kids laughed, Felix pulled back his legs and swiped back.
—
Chris pulled into the curb in front of the police station. The lawn was littered with news reporters and camera men. "Oh yeah, the press is here."
"Of course they would be," Said Hyunjin, rather cheerfully. "This is the first time the city has called us for something like this."
Seungmin hummed. "The last time we came here under these kind of circumstances, we were finding out if we'd be allowed to be heroes, or not."
"We'd better get out there, guys." Chris said, turning off the ignition. "Let's go." The group left the van, Chris locking it once he saw everyone was out. Chris led the group up the gradual incline of the staircase, Changbin first behind him with the younger three close behind.
"Mr. Bang!" "Double Knock, sir!" "Excuse me, Mr. Bang!" The shouting voices of the reporters flooded the boys' ears as they marched forward. "Do you have any information about the suspect or his victim?" "Mr. Bang, do you have any insight on the case or the suspect's motive?" "Sir, do you believe that Stray Kids should be allowed to freely defend the city, as they currently do?"
The Kids weren't obligated to answer. In fact, they were legally prohibited from making any statement to the public without consent from the city. That didn't mean Chris didn't want to answer. He wanted to respond so they would stop asking the same questions time and again, but he couldn't, and that was just something he had to accept. It wasn't just to save face for the city or the police, it was to save face for the boys and to make sure no false information would be released. The media had been told this, four months ago, yet acted that their questions could be answered, or needed to be answered. It was one of the frustrating things about the job, and, today, it took a bit of effort for the boys to mute their voices.
The quintet were a little more than halfway to the doors of the building when Chris felt off. He stopped and looked among the crowd for something to click. "Chan hyung?" Said Hyunjin.
"Who... who called..." Chris muttered, Hyunjin and Changbin only hearing him because of how close they were to him.
"Who called what?" Changbin asked.
"That voice, where is...?" Chris' eyes flared open ever so slightly as he found a familiar face. "Minho." The boys easily found the handsome face of the man in the mint blue and white suit and held their breaths. His normally brown eyes were blood red and continually released a scentless black smoke.
"What are you doing here?" Asked Chris. The voices and movements of the reporters fell to a hush as he spoke.
"Who is he talking to?" Inquired a woman.
"Ha, he is a madman!" Exclaimed a male. "Go check into a mental ward, ya fucking lawless degen—"
"Hush!" Barked Hyunjin. "Let our leader do his job, please!"
"I don't know how you're making it so only we can see you," Chris said. A couple people murmured in wonder and doubt. "But I sure as hell know you're treading thin waters, Minho."
Minho drew out his breath as he inhaled through his teeth. To the surprise of the heroes, they were stained black. The smell of burned flesh slapped everyone within five feet instantly. The press reacted with nauseous expressions and sounds, stepping back or turning away to cough and hold in vomit. The Kids also turned to recover, but Chris swallowed the unfurling knot in his stomach and kept eye contact with Minho, refusing to show any sign of weakness to the serial killer.
"He's actually here?" A reporter said, her volume slightly lower than normal.
"Holy shit, what kind of power is this?!" Cried a male.
"Do you want me to answer what I'm doing here, or the secret to my new trick?"
"Why are you here, Minho?" Demanded Chris.
Minho gave a small smile and folded his hands in front of his abdomen. "Faith is alive. Jisung and I would love to—" Suddenly, the doors to the hall opened. Minho paused and let his hands fall to his side. Everyone watched the mayor and police chief come outside with a handful of officers.
Brandon had a friendly face and build and had a mauve tie with his light grey suit. Jinyoung looked familiar to a lot of people, but no one could quite put their finger on whom. He donned an all grey suit and his tie was matte silver. They had barely taken two steps when Jinyoung saw what what happening and put his arm in front of Brandon. The mayor stumbled back a bit, then gave a small gasp upon seeing what was before him. One of the officers whispered in Jinyoung's ear and received order 10-23.
"Hello, Mr. Gorge, Mr. Park." Greeted Minho, with a small wave. "Do I have permission to finish my explanation, or must I leave before I spill the wine necessary for the vines to grow?" Chris quirked an eyebrow and looked among his members, who also looked a bit puzzled.
Brandon and Jinyoung looked at each other. Brandon nodded. A moment later, so did Jinyoung. The police chief answered, "Go on, Minho. You have our attention."
"Thank you. So!" Minho clapped his hands, then folded his hands again. "Jisung and I would love to meet you boys at the asylum, at 3:53 PM: no sooner, no later. If you open those doors early or one minute past the designated time, the ritual will not only fail and make the core of the Earth expand to the point of destroying the planet!" Minho laughed for two seconds, then his laughter cut short. "I'm kidding."
Chris said, "I was going to say, Minho—"
"—Ah ah ah!" Minho wiggled his finger warningly. "There will still be a dire consequence for an early or late entry!"
"And what is that?"
"We'll be so upset that we can't free our girlfriend that we'll light the entire city on fire!" Minho flung his arms out side with a broad smile.
"Seriously?"
"Yeah, seriously." Minho nodded. "Anyway," He sang, and ran a hand through his hair. "That's all you need to know."
"We expect the angels to show up and try to stop us. You'll probably see one within minutes of coming inside, and they'll probably help you, or at least try. We'll see. It'll be fun." He wiggled the fingers of one hand. "Have fun at the meeting, boys! Bye now!"
Minho threw his head back. Chris instinctively reached out, even though he didn't know what to expect. Minho fell backwards as a fiery magic circle appeared in the stone stairs with a deafening bang like a rife had been fired. The crowd screamed, cowered and flinched. Some of the police did, too.
The Kids looked surprised but were able to find strength by looking at each other. Seungmin noticed the circle didn't erase the steps but wrapped around them and decided to remember that. A plethora of frostbitten arms with clawed fingers grabbed Minho and quickly pulled him through like he was a doll made of cloth. The circle disappeared with a bang, leaving no trace behind. More shrieks were given at the sound. As the people recovered, Chris turned his attention to the mayor and chief. His confident gaze was mirrored by Jinyoung.
"Come on, Kids." Said Jinyoung, directing their eyes to him. Nodding and shivering, the five quietly left the press alone.
—
Three watchtowers and small officer stations at their feet were lined up thirty feet apart in the middle of the Ocean, the one hundred by eighty foot lot that connected the four wings. They had female names in an attempt to make the asylum less dreary to inmates and visitors. The Ocean was boxed in by twenty feet tall, unpainted stone walls with steel walkways leading from one wing to the other. Steel stairs were in each corner. Six flower boxes of white and purple hyacinths were lined up outside the facilities and security stations. The boxes were blanketed in snow, but parts of the flowers peeked out from the cold powder.
Alicia was located east, serving as the residential and intensive care centre. She had three floors, the third being the underground intensive care level. Her ash white exterior was lined with vibrant red paint along the top and bottom, her roof grey. The clock tower in the left part of her body showed it was 3:48 in Roman numerals, a guarded platform below thirty feet above the ground. There was also a patrol on the level roof beside the clock.
Eva, the medical ward, was west. She looked identical to Alicia but had no clock tower and only had two floors. Sara, the entrance and parking lot, was north. The stone wall had a small weakness in the electric gate, but in case of an emergency, with the press of a button, three rows of spiked metal poles would thrust up from the ground. This security measure had yet to have been used, but it had been tested with a dummy driver and proven to be a viable asset.
Maria, the graveyard and garden, was south. There was no stone wall or electric fence where Maria met the Atlantic. The graveyard was neatly laid out to the west, the wooden benches and wide flowerbeds of more hyacinths to the east. There were ten headstones: four names belonged to patients from the first floor, and three belonged to patients from the second floor. Two belonged to stillborn children, though one hadn't been given a name but still had the name of her mother inscribed, and the tenth was that of the inmate who had murdered the three.
The police and Stray Kids had gathered at the asylum at two o'clock. Hyunjin was throwing his dan geom at a sandbag near Alicia and pulling it back with the white glow of his powers. One could tell that his speed was a little faster than the pair of watching officers' eyes could keep up with. "Uh, that's 471...?" Said an officer whose surname was Walker, hesitantly.
"475," Hyunjin politely corrected, pausing his exercise with the weapon in his hand to look at him. "But you were close."
"It's getting awfully close to 3:53." Said the other officer, Bridges, gazing up at the clock as Hyunjin resumed his practice.
Walker nodded. "That it is. I wonder if Chief Park is going to call one last meeting to go over everything, again."
Hyunjin replied, "Probably not. We're playing with time and demons, here."
"That's true enough." Walker nodded. Hyunjin caught his dan geom and sheathed it in one motion.
"I'm going to wait for the guys by the door." Said Hyunjin, resting his hands on his hips and looking from one man to the other, his eyes also drifting to the dozen officers standing by the doors. "Thanks for staying to watch, guys. Even if it got boring, after one hundred."
They both laughed. Bridges said, "Don't mention it, Ghost. We'll walk with you." Some ten feet behind them, Chris was delivering blows to the bags three officers were holding, alternating targets and how he attacked.
He brought up one leg in a jump kick and pushed himself off the sac with the other, the officer who held the bag staggering as Chris was launched across the ways and landing ten quick stomps to the second bag, switching from foot to foot. The officer who held this bag was the best built of his peers, but he still needed to plant himself firmly into the ground to avoid being blown back at least five feet from Chris' power. Chris landed with a thump that had less impact on the beaten up earth because he wasn't wearing his own boots. His momentum boosted him rightwards, to the third bag. He pulled back his arms and whacked it upwards with his left arm, immediately followed by his right to make a 'double knot'.
With a choked laugh, the man who held this bag stepped around a bit. "Oof!"
"You alright, Shorts?" Chris asked, relaxing his posture and rolling his right shoulder.
He nodded. "Yeah, I'm fine. What a rush, ha ha ha!"
"Glad you're still having fun." Chris smiled and patted his left shoulder. "You sure you don't want to switch out?"
"Yeah, I'm sure. I've only been here fifteen minutes, I can keep going."
"Daren," Said Johnson, the officer with the second bag. "You really should take a break." He looked behind him. "It's getting real close to that time, anyway."
Chris turned to look at the clock with the officers and raised his eyebrows. "Oh, damn! Guess it's time to gather everyone."
Shorts gave a nod to Alicia. "Ghost is already ahead of you." Chris and the other two men looked in her direction. Hyunjin gave Chris a wave, and Chris waved back.
"That he is!"
The third officer, Island, said, "Chief Park will probably call everyone over, in a mo—"
"This if Chief Park to all officers in the DCA: please alert the Stray Kids to gather at the door and proceed to said destination. Two minutes and thirty seconds until entry. Over."
"Yep." Said Johnson.
"Walk with us, Double Knock?" Said Island.
Chris gave a nod. "Of course." The four started their short walk and blended into Hyunjin and the two officers. "All warmed up, Hyunjin?" He nodded. "Good, good." Chris turned to watch out for whoever came next.
Seungmin and Changbin jogged over, Chief Jinyoung close behind with eight officers. Chris looked around the yard for Felix and scarcely saw him leap from the steel platform from the nearest watchtower and land hands first, the boy bounding forth like a cat until he was somewhat close to the others and then standing, shaking out his arms a little. "You alright, Felix?" Inquired Chris.
"Yeah, I'm fine. That wasn't too high of a jump." Felix responded. Chris nodded.
"All right," The voice of the Chief drew everyone's attention. "I don't have time to go over every part of this operation in detail, but I don't need to. Remember to check your surroundings and be prepared to make split second decisions. So long as you follow protocol and keep your heads on your shoulders, all should go well, and, ideally, there should be no casualties."
"It is likely there will be casualties, but it is our mission to minimize those numbers and save not just the patients and staff of the asylum, who are on lockdown, but to save the city from the evil threatening to burst from the schemes of Minho and Jisung. I'll be waiting out here, but know that I, along with every citizen of our city, will be with you in spirit." Jinyoung looked to an officer beside him. "Marley, how much time until 'go'?"
"Twenty-three, twenty-one, twenty..." Counted the man, who held a cellphone. With amazing efficiency, the Stray Kids moved to the front of the mass, the police force behind them in four full columns and a fifth column that had vacant one spot. They marched forward, Marley walking behind them to continue his task. "Thirteen, twelve, eleven..."
Chris felt a pair of eyes staring at him and found the wavering eyes of Seungmin. "Ten, nine..." Chris discreetly moved his hand over Seungmin's and gently tapped his skin. "Eight, seven..." Seungmin swallowed and fumbled his fingers until he held Chris' hand.
"We'll be OK, Seungmin-ie, I promise." Chris muttered. His voice swayed the interest of the other Kids. Seungmin sniffled and nodded. Hyunjin stood on the other side of Seungmin, and he rubbed Seungmin's arm.
"Three, two, one, zero." Marley glanced up from the phone and nodded once to Chris. "Negative one—"
"Go, go!" Shouted Chief Jinyoung. Not wasting time, the group strode forward and entered the asylum. The decently decorated lobby had sky blue walls, a tacky grey carpet and cheap cushioned chairs. The secretary, like all staff outside of medical and security, had already evacuated. The far end of the room were glass sliding doors, emergency steel doors retracted into the wall.
As the force went through the doors and began to pass the huge holding cell on their left, a voice came from the radios of the officers. "Dispatch to Adam, Boy, Charles and David: the city has not caught fire. Repeat: the city has not caught fire. Over."
"That's the immediate danger out of the way, good." Said Chris with a heavy sigh, ensuring his voice could be heard by at least those directly behind him. The holding cell had steel white bars and benches against the far wall and mats on the concrete floor, which continued outside of the cell. The walkway to the white door at the end of the room had several windows that looked into the cafeteria on the right wall.
"What's the time?" Asked Changbin, who was to the right of Chris. Felix was at Changbin's right.
Alley, a female from the second row, answered, "3:53:42, forty-three..."
"It's still too early to be sure that the city is safe." Said Russell, a man from the fourth row.
"I agree." Replied Chris, the other boys and some of the men nodding. It took group about twenty-five seconds to arrive at the door. They stopped, and Seungmin stepped up to the door. He pressed his hands and his left ear to its surface.
"Clear." Seungmin stated. He stepped back into line and Chris took his place to open the door. He had almost put his hand on the doorknob when a spider leapt through the window, its bristles roughly touching Chris' right cheek. The spider flew over Chris' shoulder and landed on the ground. As several officers gasped and began to raise their handguns, only to realize it was just a spider, Chris pivoted and saw the tarantula wasn't moving.
"It's dead?" Chris said, questioningly.
Seungmin nodded. "Tarantulas can't survive long falls. They get hurt even if dropped from a foot high. Though some species are more aggressive, it is mostly because they are Old World species or because of mood. They are mostly harmless. Their bites can hurt, but..." He shook his head and crossed his arms. "They require humid habitats. How did this spider get here?"
"The Devil, probably." Answered Addison, an officer from the fifth row, and a handful of them laughed.
"That's probably not far from the truth, actually." Seungmin said, bobbing his head. He made eye contact with Chris. "Allow me to examine its corpse, before we move on."
"Of course, go ahead." Chris said, nodding. Seungmin gave a nod in response before kneeling before the creature. He gingerly poked it with a finger and sharply held his breath. His breath shuddered, and he swallowed loudly. "Seungmin?" The boy's torso jolted, his eyes whipping up to Chris' and then relaxing. "Talk to us, please."
"S-Sure. This is a South American Pink Toe." Seungmin carefully picked up the spider and turned it over in his hands as he got to his feet. He looked at his peers while speaking. "Its pink colour darkens into maturity, and they live from seven to nine years."
"They are arboreal, meaning they live in trees. This gave them the name Antilles tree spider. They grow up to six inches, and this adult female is five inches. I noticed a strong magical presence from it, when it came through the window. It's gone now, but it stayed long enough for me to intercept how the sender felt, when it was created." Seungmin's eyes lowered. "It was Faith..."
"Wait, that means Jisung and Minho have already changed her." Felix said. "They've already won. So was the whole 3:53 PM thing just to lure us in?"
"Probably, yeah."
"It might not mean they've won, Felix." Said Changbin. "Just that they've done enough to make her able to do this." He pointed at the spider.
"What did you feel when you touched the spider, Seungmin-ie?" Asked Chris.
"Intense throbbing pain where my jaw starts." Seungmin rubbed beneath his ears. "My tongue felt alienated and cold, like it had nothing around it. It felt like I had been crying for hours. I felt so helpless, so small and weak, unable to do anything but obey."
"I'd like to find one of these alive, but I doubt I'll be that lucky. I feel as if something is hiding in our little friend." Seungmin turned his head to Felix. "Felix, would you mind—?" Felix widened his eyes and shook his head. Seungmin, Felix and Hyunjin laughed. Chris and Changbin joined, a few of the officers chuckling along.
"I'll do it, Seungmin." Hyunjin said, stepping closer and withdrawing his dan geom. He cautiously sliced open the spider, from its abdomen to its chelicerae. Its blood colour was normal, but scentless black smoke accompanied the liquid. When Hyunjin and Seungmin saw the smoke, their eyes flew open. Hyunjin took a hasteful step back, and Seungmin quickly put the spider down, keeping his face as far away from the spider as he could.
"I don't smell anything wrong with the smoke." Felix commented, shaking his head. "I do see something that looks an awful lot like a crystal in the front part of its body, though."
"Do you want to get it?" Asked Seungmin. Felix froze up for a second, then shook his head. "I thought so." Seungmin crouched before the tarantula and carefully picked into its body with his fingers to extract the white object. He held it in two of his fingers and rolled it between them. "It sure feels like a real crystal."
"Lemme see." Felix said, coming over to Seungmin, who moved the item into his palms. Felix touched it with one finger and rolled it around Seungmin's palm a little. "Yep, that's a real crystal. I'd ask if I could keep it, but I don't wanna be cursed, or something."
"I do feel a faint magical aura from it," Seungmin said. "But it doesn't feel malicious. If anything, it feels malevolent. Might even be lucky. You can keep it on you for now if you want, Felix."
"Cool." Felix took the crystal and stored it in his pouch. He quietly added, "Yay!" Hearing him, Seungmin chuckled.
"OK, let's move on." Said Chris, as Seungmin stooped down and got a small plastic bag from one of his pouches. He shimmied the tarantula into it as everyone but Hyunjin moved on, and sealed the bag before standing, placing the spider in a different pocket before jogging to catch up with Hyunjin. Chris waited for them at the door, the officers acting upon their order to divide and investigate both ways the hall went. When they passed through, Chris began to pull the door closed, but was shocked to feel the door slam itself.
"Well, that can't be good." Said Chris. Hyunjin and Seungmin laughed. "Come on, this way." He nodded to his right, and they hurried to return to the front of their group.
