After the Sickness
Aky & Ari: Aky always thought she’d be the first to go. She didn’t think she’d lose all but one of her family. So she needs to re-stabilize her world while dealing with Ari. Ari’s just the maddest 12-year-old you will ever meet and if you get too close she WILL stomp on your feet and make your day hellish. So really, Aky’s days mostly consist of helping this angry preteen process her anger while trying to process her own grief.
Ani: Despite plans to move the hell away, possibly to some brand new continent, Ani was talked into staying in Edar by Gi, who offered her this ‘coincidental’ accounting position with her family’s breeding business. Did she mention there also happened to be a conveniently empty house that came with it? Ani didn’t have to deliberate long. After all, she found herself with not only three children, but two young adults who were, for some reason, depending on her to be the family rock. While she had enough money to give in to wallowing, she decided it was probably better to keep herself busy and keep her kids around family. So she quickly accepted this ‘convenient’ job with all its perks and…seems to be doing fine?
Plus, she occasionally indulges in her old job to keep herself grounded. What can she say? Old habits die hard.
Fawkes: The day his uncle moved in was probably the happiest day he’d had since Flori was born, and the day he was offered a chance to work with horses was the second. It’s weird, this sudden burden of responsibility he has, but he’s so far been managing. It helps that there are two young adults in the house to help him in this weird transition period.
Gav: Is moping around, and moping around fantastically. His parents and older brothers are being appropriately comforting. Rhos thinks he’s being far too dramatic, considering the relationship didn’t last all too long.
Gi: Is doing surprisingly well for a widowed queen, or is at least enough of a Stepford Smiler to convince people she’s doing just fine. It could just be that, to prevent having to grieve, she’s continuing on her manic schedule as normal, and everyone’s too scared to try and stop her. If this continues, Liam has threatened to call upon their mother. Forcibly dragging her away from her desk didn’t help.
Kael: Kael got hit with a four-fer. First Rena, then his mom, then his little sister, then his twin. And he has complex feelings about all four. Like the love of his life he had too little time with. And the mother he spent his entire life seeking approval from, while also resenting her, especially after discovering she’s the reason he had too little time with Rena. The little sister he always felt was his parent’s attempt at a better child, and wanted to get along despite the fact she was mom’s little clone and he had no clue how to relate to her. His brother, his twin, who was too much like mom but not enough like mom. In short, that was an entire year of suck he doesn’t want to unpack just yet, and so has wandered away into the wilderness with his dad. He occasionally checks in with Aunt Seila just to let her know they’re alive and….more or less coping
Lan: Lan has dragged his butt out into the wild with his only remaining kid and they haven’t been heard from in a while. He once wrote Seila a note that said, eloquently, ‘Fuck’. She assumes he’s grieving.
Liam: Liam is Liam. This isn’t his first time losing a loved one, and his relationship was relatively new. So while his sister is (not successfully) mourning the loss of everything she had, he’s more mourning the loss of what could have been. It’s a slow process. Kicking ass seems to help.
Rhen: Essentially moved in with his sister, since he couldn’t see a reason to stay in his old place, didn’t particularly want to mope around home, and figured his sister would need help with three kids. Plus, he figured Fawkes would need someone to teach him how to grow a beard. He’s slipped into the role of ‘cool uncle’ pretty quickly, though he doesn’t really know what to do beyond that. For now, he can be found playing with toddlers, hanging with teens, and occasionally blowing himself up in the shed Ani designated as his.
Tana: She attached herself to Rhen after Ashki died, since she could not handle being alone and didn’t have anywhere else to go. So when Rhen moved in with Ani, Tana came as part of a package deal. It’s proving to be not a bad arrangement-she’s lost her best friend and what was possibly the love of her life, but she’s managing to get through it be surrounding herself with domesticity. She’s happily become the live-in nanny, helping Ani take care of a toddler and a new born. Kids are the best, you guys. She loves these kids so much. Never mind that they sometimes remind her that she’s never going to have her own tiny blond children to coo over*. She’s fine, really.
*to clarify, it’s not that she really wants a tiny blond child. It’s that she can’t stop picturing a future where they might have happened. She more wants that future where she and Ashi have their brood of little blonds than she does an actual kid. Ani’s kids just remind her she won’t have the opportunity to braid her own kid’s hair because she’s not going to have any because she doesn’t have Ashi. No, but really, she’s FINE you guys.
Yar: She say she’s dealing with this in a healthy way. She eats, she sleeps her required four hours, she does things. And while that’s true, the assertion that this is ‘healthy’ is a lie. When she hasn’t sequestered herself in Ev’s library to mope, she’s motor-mouthing her way to a volunteer position at a healing clinic or going for hours-long runs. The dogs and Squeaky are probably suffering under the manic amount of care she’s putting into their wellbeing.
