🦎 + EXTREMELY predictable question from me, but what do you think makes a good transformation in DBZ- design-wise and narrative-wise?

[Gotta get the DBZ questions in and I always welcome them. Ask Nebula and Lea; I can talk about this dumbass series for hours (sorry guys).

I can't say I've given this much DEEP thought. I can say without a doubt that SS4 was the best transformation this series has done TO DATE for a million reasons, and does hit a lot of notes that i feel a good transformation in this series should. First, the look alone is TIGHT and interesting to look at. They even made it VARY for each character which I think is HELLA NEAT and just wish there was like an explanation for it (i.e. why vegeta's eyes are blue and goku's yellow? Red fur vs pink fur? Etc.). We got tails again, fur, different eye and fur colors, long hair without going overboard (don't get me wrong; i actually don't mind SS3 TOO much, but it wasn't peak transformation design by any means), and TIDDIES OUT (which isn't a requirement but I definitely enjoy that personally). It is somehow over the top while not being too much all at once and it just WORKS.

It also dove back into the roots of the Saiyan race and the Oozaru form in both appearance and lore which is absolutely *chef's kiss.* I love that the form sank back into OG Saiyan lore while offering something unique and different from what we had already seen in SS to SS3. Barring the stupid ass way Vegeta gets it (don't talk to me I will never not be mad about it ok), Goku had to get his tail back--cringe as that scene is fuck--transform into the Golden Great Ape, AND find a way to control it and harness that power to achieve a new level of power. It also didn't just fully rely on the sort of "get angy" narrative (even if it IS a little deeper than that in actuality) that had sort of driven other transformations while as I said bringing back Saiyan roots. Don't talk to me about thr U6 saiyans on this either gfdi

So, taking that as the example, I guess my answer would be a look that's more interesting than a pallette change like they have been doing with most transformations of late along with the form tying into the lore or background of the character in both appearance and how it's achieved/how it works. They kind of half ass tried the last bit with SSG by retroactively making it a part of Saiyan lore (that Vegeta didn't know but the Namekians did? Make it make sense), but it definitely just...doesn't work. Plus the ritual they have to use (which also makes no sense for Saiyans and clashes with what we know of them, which is MAYBE the point but doesn't make it cute or unique or creative) becomes obsolete by the next arc/movie so...yeah. It's incredibly flimsy and there is no real understanding of what SSG and its subsequent forms even ARE, let alone what god ki even is. Is SSG actually an inherently Saiyan form, or is it just a Saiyan that has harnessed god ki and then transformed while using it? There is nothing clearly defined about the forms (or really even UI and UE, Frieza's forms, etc.) that makes them interesting or feel fleshed out or related to the characters as a whole. It's just.. oh, he's blue now I guess? Kay.

Plus like...give me crazy shit again. Like Cooler's fifth form? Fuck yeah, cool as shit. Cell's transformations? Even clown boi is intriguing and makes you go wtf Gero? Hideous as Super "He Stole My 'Do" 13 is, it's INTERESTING (and again, wtf Gero). Even FRIEZA'S transformations were interesting and looked really neat and felt organic until its just..."lol I picked gold to mock super saiyan haha stupid monkeys" (that form looks stupid BTW Fite me). What's his excuse for Black Frieza? We gonna get edgy emo Frieza who says he chose black like his soul? Heck. I'll give them props because they KIND OF tried design wise with Ultra Ego, but it still lacks real intrigue in that department and has the same disconnect and 🤷‍♀️ feeling the rest of the newer forms have.]

While I’m still on this train of thought (more DBS talk):

I think any satisfying super form needs to answer three questions

Where did it come from?

What does it do?

Why not use it all the time?

And of course, the answers to these three questions need to themselves be satisfying

Ultra Instinct - comes from complete control of the self and freedom from distraction, allows the user’s body to move autonomously to maximize efficiency in combat, but is extremely draining on the user’s stamina without proper training

Ultra Ego - comes from complete indulgence into the user’s desires and battle lust, allows the user to utilize the Power of Destruction and gain power proportional to damage taken, but accumulated damage still harms the user and potentially defeats the purpose of the power gained

These are both really good and interesting super forms because they change the dynamic of any given battle through changing the user’s abilities while also giving them direct drawbacks

Orange Namekian - Piccolo wished to unleash his potential and Shenron gave him “a bit more” whatever that means, Piccolo gets physically bigger and stronger, and doesn’t seem to suffer any drawbacks whatsoever

Did Piccolo always have the ability to go Orange? Actually, he turned yellow-ish and smooth in his Potential Unleashed form, so that was clearly an ability he had within him (that he didn’t unlock himself for some reason), but Orange was the “bit more” I guess? What did it do aside from make him generically stronger? Will he use this form in all future fights, or will he stick with Potential Unleashed because Orange puts a nebulous “strain” on his body like every other super form?

Beast Saiyan(?) - Gohan becomes enraged when he thinks that Piccolo has been killed, he gets stronger, and doesn’t seem to suffer any drawbacks

Did he go Super Saiyan while in Potential Unleashed? We’ve never been told that he can’t, and apparently he did that in Battle of Gods (though I don’t recall that), so there’s not any reason to think that’s the case

Is it related to Oozaru? Probably not, cus he probably would have gone Legendary Super Saiyan then

Did he unlock a form of Ultra Instinct? Does it originate from protective instincts rather than battle instincts?

Is it a Saiyan ability? A human ability? A mix of human and Saiyan DNA? Can Goten do it? Can Pan?

Super Saiyan God - five good hearted Saiyans give their energy to another, the target gains divine ki, but until the user becomes used to divine ki, this is only temporary

Goku getting his power from other people holding hands in a circle is not at all satisfying, but at least he points this out and decides to surpass this power on his own, so at least it’s a character moment for him. Divine ki is nebulous, but it at least lets him sense divine beings, so that’s something. The drawback is temporary, so that’s not very interesting. At this point, Goku and Vegeta have effectively become SSG inherently, or at least have the SSG strength as their base power, so now it’s just a boost I guess? Compared to SSB, it’s physically weaker, so at least there’s a reason to use SSB over SSG

Super Saiyan Blue - Going Super Saiyan while in SSG, hence the full name of SSGSS, the user becomes stronger but also has their heart calmed and energy unified, but the energy usage is extremely high particularly at the moment of activation making switching into it relatively difficult and also speed is reduced

A) If you can go Super Saiyan IN SSG, why is SSG even called Super? B) We never get any indication that Goku or Vegeta couldn’t do this already, so when they get it it’s kind of out of nowhere. C) We never see the struggle to do this, so we kind of have to assume that they just realized “oh, we’re not actually Super Saiyans right now. Let’s try that!” and it just worked. The origin of this power is very boring, but it having utility in strength at the cost of speed makes the dynamic between God and Blue very interesting because neither is technically better than the other, only better suited to different situations

Neither ability answers question 1 very well, but they do at least provide an answer. Question 3 is pretty negligible at this point for both, but both problems can be ignored because the answer to question 2 is satisfying enough

Basically, if Orange and Beast get proper development later, they can easily become more interesting, but right now, they’re boring, and I won’t waste any more of my time praying that they’ll give me a satisfying answer when chances are they’ll just stagnate and be summarily replaced sooner or later with something either leagues better or just as bad

Kakavege week - Space Travel

AN: Takes place in an AU where when Raditz came to Earth, Goku regained his Saiyan memories after they both were killed by Piccolo. Out of a sense duty to his race he went with Nappa, Raditz and Vegeta after the brothers were brought back with the Dragon Balls. Nappa and Raditz later die at the hands of Freeza in glorious battle on Namek and choose not to be brought back. The rest follows the basic timeline of Dragon Ball Z except Goku and Vegeta still have their space pods and use them to go to other worlds as either defenders of planets in need or in search of remnants of the Cold's Empire.

And since all your Earth friends agreed that after seeing what a hassle Garlic Jr. is that no one else is allowed to wish for immortality, regardless of their intentions towards Earth.'

'I guess that's fair, I can't think of anything I want either after I bring King Kai and the rest of them back, but that's only fixing my mess, not getting something that I want.'

'That reminds me, I've been wanting to ask for ages: why didn't you Instant Transmission Cell into space? I know we've set up beacons for you to use.'

'I panicked. Piccolo had just finished giving me the dressing down of my life about how I was sending my son to die and then Cell was a sore loser and was gonna blow up everyone and King Kai's place was the furthest place I could think of where no one would get hurt. Besides, the only beacons we had set up at that point were in the lower atmosphere and maybe one on the moon, we were still testing my reach and our ability to make beacons at that point. Hey, ya think if we still had our tails and we went to the moon, we'd turn Oozaru?'

'No, the Blutz waves would be too weak if we were standing on the source. I don't know what it is about a planet's atmosphere, but it amplifies the Blutz waves to make them strong enough for us to transform. It's why we never had to worry about transforming in space and making sure our ships could survive its crew suddenly becoming at least twenty times larger.'

'Huh. I never even thought about that. It's like our biology wanted us to travel the stars.'

'I guess you could say that. Anything else you wanted to talk about? I'm exhausted from our last mission and was really looking forward to the forced sleep.'

'Oh, no, that's it. Goodnight my Prince.'

'Goodnight Kakarot.'

And that's not even counting actually summoning the dragon without anyone knowing and trying to make their own wishes. I had to fly to the south pole and even then our sons were about halfway there by the time I summoned Shenron. Those poor penguins, they had no idea-'

'Yeah yeah yeah, back to the part where you wished back our entire planet, race and culture without telling me.'

'Well I wanted it to be a surprise. Oh, also I wished for our tails to grow back after a week living on Planet Vegeta. I remember one time you said that having your tail cut off meant you were exiled but at the same time I didn't want to grow them back before we got there 'cuz you might guess something was up and I didn't want them to grow back in the middle of you seeing your dad again or something so…'
