Mia who Completely rejected the ideas and burdens of motherhood. Her mother abandoned her and she's got so much bottled up anger and frustration about the burdens placed on her shoulders as a child that she refuses to have anything to do with it first chance she gets.
She can't cook. Do laundry. Clean. And she's a smart brilliant young woman who is more than a little sabotaging every attempt Lana or Diego make to teach her. 'We DID Laundry at home Lana but we did it by hand! Sorry i didn't know all soap wasn't the same.' 'YOU FLOODED THE DORM WITH BUBBLES MIA! DONT SHRUG ME OFF.'
Lana who very much stepped up into that parental role after her parents died for Ema. Which Does cause strain because, much like in Lilo and stitch, You're NOT my mom Lana! You're my sister!!!
Mia feeling more than a little high and mighty because there's none of that tension between her and Maya. She's Just Maya's awesome big sister that picks her up on a motorcycle and takes her to the beach and spits entire cakes with her and gets her ramen! Tells her all about the bigger world! She's Just her awesome sister!
And Lana getting So mad because We'll FINE Mia maybe I'm not raising Ema right but at least I'm raising her! Not dumping her off on other people like you do with Everything! Your laundry, your dishes, your SISTER!
It turns into a big fight. Mia stares at the pile of take out containers piled high in her desk. Forces herself to get up and collect her piles of randomly strewn clothing and put them in the washer. Squint and read the directions. Loads the dishwasher (although Diego will still stare at her in horror when he watches her load the wooden utensils and knives in) and calls Maya. Asks her if she's alright. If anything is bothering her.
Hears in the stretch of silence the answer is Yes even if the response that follows is a cheerful Nah everythings great here! Oh but one of the acolytes did-
"You can always call on me when something's wrong Maya. I know I'm far away but... But I'm not leaving you okay? You'll always have me."
Her mother abandoned her family. Mia has wiped enough snotty noses and changed enough diapers for a hundred lifetimes already. She's done. She's not a mother and damn well never will be. Screw you Ami. But that doesn't mean shes going to follow her mother's footsteps. She's not going to abandon her little sister too.
