Free a Man to Fight (1943)
This poster by Leslie Darrel Ragan and produced by Brett Lithographing Co. depicts a woman who is working in a railroad’s maintenance roundhouse. She applies oil to lubricate a locomotive wheel. This is a job historically held by men, and hardly ever given to women in this period. Leslie was hired to make the poster artwork to encourage women to join the workforce to replace men serving in the armed forces. Hence the text, “Free a Man to Fight.” Empowering women to relieve men of their duties so that they can serve in the war.
