It would be unfair to label @Objects_of_Common_Interest simply as a design studio, since its founders, Eleni Petaloti and Leonidas Trampoukis, are mostly interested in the story before its incarnation, focusing on abstract shape before its material manifestation and light before its spatial dynamic. Yatzer recently caught up with Eleni and Leo to discuss their latest project showcased at @collectiblefair in #Brussels with @_sightunseen_ , their creative relationship, and their design philosophy. LOT Office for Architecture creates all-blue building in Bushwick
LOT Office for Architecture has designed a monochrome blue Brooklyn townhouse for a renovation project in the borough's Bushwick neighbourhood.
The 100-year-old house, now called The Blue Building, stands out from the row of neutral-coloured buildings that make up the street on which it sits.
The Blue Building sits between neutral-coloured properties
"The intention was that a bold monochromatic approach would create a new-building effect, almost making the building a stand-alone object," said co-founder of LOT Office for Architecture Leonidas Trampoukis.
Despite its vivid colour, The Blue Building is a similar height to the neutral properties it sits between, boasting three storeys at a size of 3,000-square-feet (300-square-metres).
The building's bold, monochromatic colour is its standout feature
The building's private garden is a large, light-coloured concrete patio that opens out at the back of the house. The patio is built around an existing magnolia tree that towers over the outdoor space.
A reflected corrugated material makes up the wall that separates The Blue Building from the surrounding properties. This material picks up and reflects the different colours that result from changing light throughout the day.
A private garden is hugged by reflective corrugated walls
"We saw the work of renovating a townhouse in the same way that we would see an installation project," Trampoukis told Dezeen.
"We worked with a singular gesture, and ideas of perception and illusion," he continued, explaining the studio's intentions behind the building's monochrome blue, and its reflective garden walls.
A metal curtain provides privacy for the house's lower level
In the middle of the patio, there is a standing outdoor curtain made from blue perforated aluminium, offering the house's lower level some privacy.
"We decided to work with colour and materials that can be painted, such as stucco and metal, which are materials that can be transformed into something new with simple means," explained Trampoukis.
The house's interior has an airy feel
Like its exterior, the inside of the building has been entirely renovated.
Narrow slated black hardwood floors contrast with bright white walls, with exposed brick where the original walls have been left on display.
The Blue Building has hardwood floors
The top floor features11-foot-high (4 metres) ceilings, large windows and skylights. Translucent polycarbonate panels are used as sliding doors that separate rooms, keeping the rooms bright and connected even when the doors are shut.
"The panels used as sliding partitions and room doors filter light with changing coloured hues throughout the day," said Trampoukis.
Translucent doors capture light that changes colour throughout the day
The house's windows are framed with metal extrusions that add a sense of depth to the building's facade. Painted white on the inside, the extrusions reflect light back into the house, enhancing its bright atmosphere.
The Blue Building takes cues from a former project by LOT Office for Architecture's sibling design studio, Objects of Common Interest.
The project, named Formations, is an installation of curvy ultramarine-coloured seats at the entrance and garden patio of The Athens Conservatoire in Greece. LOT Office for Architecture was founded in 2012 by Leonidas Trampoukis and Eleni Petaloti.

Sight Unseen Showcases Objects of Common Interest at Collective Design
New York- and Athens-based design studio Objects of Common Interest was selected for the second consecutive year by online publication and curatorial platform Sight Unseen‘s booth at Collective Design. In response, the studio created an immersive installation named Landscape for the event that was held in Brussels March 14 to 17, 2019.

Landscape is made up of three unique components that together create a reflective mirrored still-life. The first element, Tube Lights, is a series of glowing curved formations; the second is Formations II, a collection of upholstered sculptural seating; and the third is Blow Chair, a soft sculpture that also functions as a lounge.

“We wanted to create an immersive, playful landscape of curves, seen as an installation through the individuality and juxtaposition of the various pieces presented,” say Eleni Petaloti and Leonidas Trampoukis, founders of Objects of Common Interest. “The glowing tubular lights are reflected in the stainless-steel mirror elements, extending  their original shapes. They’re bent again and constantly changing as visitors progress in the space, moving around, resting, mingling and self-reflecting.”

“Objects of Common Interest” is a design studio with the focus in creating objects and still life installations in search of inspirational moments in materiality, process and concept. The studio is lead by Eleni Petaloti and Leonidas Trampoukis, founding partners of architecture and design firm LOT based in New York and in Greece.
The studio recently produced a collection for the “New Reflections” exhibition at Matter design gallery, New York. The objects have been created using glass, marble, and concrete, and each piece has been designed following the rules of Euclidean geometry. This ancient Greek method, described by mathematician Euclid, requires lines, shapes and angles to be constructed through deducing answers without calculated measurements. The collection materialises as a series of marble tables, orb-like concrete based mirrors and tinted glass vases and bowls, which characteristically inherit iconic forms of classic design. In a statement about the pieces, Matter comment that Objects of Common Interest have designed “an array of amalgamated forms in monolithic and composite execution, which span the fluid limits of transparency, material, and form.”

Objects of Common Interest presents homeware based on classical geometries
Marble tables, coloured glass vases and bowls, and mirrors with concrete bases are among pieces by design studio Objects of Common Interest on show at New York gallery Matter.
Objects of Common Interest designed the pieces for Matter's New Reflections exhibition using Euclidean geometry. Established by Greek mathematician Euclid, the system dictates that angles, lines and shapes be drawn using a ruler with no markings, or a compass.
Forms created by these strict rules can be seen in the Plane Side Table – comprising parallel slabs of marble, with an acrylic top available in either pale yellow or pink – and an accompanying rhomboid candle holder.
"The pieces are an exploration of form that stem from the classic geometries of the ancient world," said Matter in a statement. "Scaled to fit interior spaces, these exercises in Euclidean shapes create the new from the known."
"The result is an array of amalgamated forms in monolithic and composite execution, which span the fluid limits of transparency, material, and form," the gallery team added.
The exhibition also features a new collection of tableware titled Relativity of Color, which includes a vase, a plate, a bowl, a wide cup and a low glass. A coloured acrylic cylinder forms the base of each, while hand-blown glass shaped to suit the different functions is set on top.
Other objects include a trio of mirrors, with circular reflective surfaces made by layering clear acrylic sheets. Concrete stands forms the bases, with one set at a tilt to angle the mirror upwards.
New Reflections is the first show of work in the city by Objects of Common Interest – a design studio founded by New York- and Thessaloniki-based Eleni Petaloti and Leonidas Trampoukis, who also run architecture practice LOT.
The exhibition will be on display from 19 October to 9 December 2017 in Matter's gallery, located at 405 Broome Street in Lower Manhattan.
The design showroom and gallery was founded in 2003 by Jamie Gray, and his team has previously curated a show home at The Standish condominium building in Brooklyn.
They have also set up an in-house brand called Matter-Made, which debuted at this year's Milan design week with a collection of sculptural furniture and lighting by designers including Faye Toogood, Philippe Malouin and Pedro Venzon.
