Robin comes from a family of psychics but she’s not one, she’s a mirror, she reflects back and increases the power of any psychic—or any magician, so she’ll sit with her back touching Steve’s while he reads tarot cards, or hold his hand while he looks into the depths of a cup of coffee and tries to see what the Upside Down is asking of him today.

eldest daughter born into a family of very dedicated evangelical christians, lorelei spent a good portion of her life trying to fit in where she did not. she wanted to be a good daughter, a good christian, and a good person – but in so many ways she never met the mark on any of those things. by the time she was a teenager, her younger brother was old enough to relieve her of some of the pressure. the fact that she started to mumble hymns and avoid youth group at every opportunity didn't go unnoticed, but it did go unmentioned.

the first real strike came when she was 16 and she started dating her first kinda serious boyfriend. he understood her in a way no one else had, and when she said she didn't want to go to church anymore he said he'd cover for her. always find them something to do so she would be busy. though it provided much relief, it upset her parents deeply. and suddenly that outsider feeling was growing stronger and stronger, ostracised by her parents and brother. left feeling alone, save for her boyfriend.

so it wasn't all that surprising when about a year later, lorelei and her boyfriend decided to run away. leaving their high school educations unfinished with the dream of freedom paired warmer weather. and for the next five years it was exactly that. making their way towards the west coast. but unfortunately, like most things, it wasn't all sunshine. relying on each other that much became tough for the young couple. while they understood each other in a way that made their lives easier, they also understood each other in a way that made them experts at twisting the knives in the other's stomach.

two years ago, her boyfriend caught her cheating and that's when things ended finally between them. she does deeply regret the choices she made, but in some ways she's glad that it ended and glad that it ended when it did. she thinks it was best for the both of them, even if it majorly fucking sucked.

I'm gonna roll a d12 for which PC to answer each of these for, since I so conveniently have 12 characters I've played in campaigns!

10. How does your PC fidget?

Whist doesn't fidget much or get impatient easily, thanks to a lifetime of hunting, stealth and forestcraft. They tend to stand completely immobile and stare at people instead, which is vastly more unsettling. I think they often care for their weapons in quiet moments though -- fiddling with the fletching on their arrows, sharpening arrowheads, whatever. They also occasionally touch and handle their longbow, which belonged to their mother, as a source of comfort. That's magical, however, and therefore doesn't require as much physical upkeep.

11. How does your PC show affection?

Okay Qree is an aarokocra, let me google some bird facts real quick...

Well! At a glance, several sources suggest birds of prey don't really express affection, but they do show trust by carrying out their own business as usual when you're nearby. So I'm picturing Qree, who grew up in an aarokocra community, just spending quality time with people and assuming they understand that means he likes them. Maybe bring back treats/small gifts while out flying, after realizing other people might not recognize his usual behavior as affection? Or just telling them in simple language that he cares about them.

19. What is your PC’s Pokemon Gym Leader type and Signature Pokemon?

Oof, that's kind of hard. Lei's theme is white light and cold silver fire, so I'm actually tempted to say Ice. And probably Alolan Ninetales, for the theme of "looks like fire but will actually freeze you to death."

Or maybe Dark type, with all those Pokemon that look sleek and sexy right before fucking you up-- Absol, Liepard, Umbreon, etc.

21. What tarot would your PC be?

I only played Ned for a few sessions, but she was supposed to be the Sun -- warm-hearted, optimistic and energetic. I don't have a lot of characters whose default state is a good mood.

35. If your PC was a dating option in a farming simulator (a la harvest moon or stardew valley), what kind of items would they like?

I rolled Haven this time! She's very easy to please. Books, paper and pens are the obvious choices, and will endear you to her forever. Her loved ones have also been known to bring her snacks and things because she forgets to feed herself -- Klaus sometimes brings her mangoes, which she makes an enormous mess eating but enjoys very much. Of course, if you're actually trying for romance, you'll have to be more forward than that, because she's very oblivious. It took all three of the other party members to get her now-fiancee a first date with her.

Ripley genuinely believes in aliens, like she'll fight ppl on that LOL, she used to just like vaguely believe in certain cryptids and supernatural creatures, like sorta like where she doesn't Really believe, but she enjoys acting like it's real anyway, if that makes sense? Once she learns vampires exist she 100% thinks there gotta be more out there tho. She will force Cas and Gabe to go look for werewolves with her lol.

I loveee that u asked about after she was turned because YES!! I'm still working out the whole situation with the ley lines, but as of now it's that as soon as the Creator started dying, some of the energy he absorbed from the leylines, went into her. And Ripley experienced this as like this warm power that Wanted her to survive and in that brief moment soothed her and made her feel like she was going to be okay and she was going to survive this and she did well. And soon after waking up she feels this energy stayed with her and guides her. And she believes the leylines are like alive and some sort of deity/entity basically.

Idk there's more but I really wanna sit down and think it all over sometime and give it it's own post once I've made up my mind, because I don't like having to go back and be like 'um actually forget about all this' hahah

Most of the Cabal goes to a crafts convention! Mainly so Drakonval can meet with a blacksmithing Mage whose YouTube video he stumbled across, seeking an apprenticeship to achieve his long-standing obsession to reconstruct weapons of myth.

Our Mage in question is Diego (shadowname: Ironman), a forge master and adept in Matter. He tests Drakonval out, and then clocks him when Drak casts a spell to look over a fancy hammer presented to him -- this, this is the Mage who thought it would be a good idea to cause a big storm in Phoenix. So, Ironman ribs him over this, and Drak takes the opportunity to learn why someone would claim they're hearing "voices" as a side-effect from his storm. Now, Ironman himself is from Tucson, so this immediately triggers alarm bells for him -- did Drakonval encounter a Banisher?

[Tucson in the context of my specific chronicle has fallen to Banishers just months earlier, hence Ironman's move here.]

They chat it over a bit more and Drakonval leaves a little worried. Meanwhile, across town, Hel -- aka Allan Wake, real name still unknown* -- is trying to learn about the spectator from his dreams from the previous session. While Hel doesn't lucid dream, he was lucid just enough to pick out a peculiar spectator in his dreams just before waking up, catching really only a few lines of dialogue and tarot cards. And so, in the waking world, Hel tries to see if there are any shops within the city that specializes in producing custom made tarots. He encounters a psychic at her house and fumbles his investigation; our psychic here isn't a full-blown mage, just a Sleepwalker with a gift and said gift screamed doom. Frightened, she demanded Hel leave and so he does. He spends the rest of the afternoon hustling on the streets to rid himself of the broke condition I gave last session (beat!).

[*Even I don't know Hel's/Wake's real name yet.]

But! Not before stopping for lunch with the rest of the Cabal at their favorite diner. They talk about the Banisher problem. Chufi casts perfect recall, and they snag a badge number off the banisher-cop that attacked them. Chufi is also able to get a scry window up on our cop and watches him on-and-off throughout the rest of the afternoon. They place an order for police records that will hopefully be enlightening through the city's request system, finish lunch while talking about all sorts of zany ideas about how to handle this guy, and then leave.

Enter Sonya, our Herald of our little burgeoning Consilium.

[Phoenix in my chronicle has long been.... a sort of dry spot for Mysteries. Not enough or "big enough" Mysteries in the city to warrant a full fledge Consilium, at least not since the early 90's. With people coming alive after dying, however, and nearby Tucson having "fallen," well, times are changing.]

Crime rates have been going up, and a resonance of a ley line that straddles the informal territory that is the Cabal's and another's (the "Harbingers of Metal"), has changed. The Harbingers lodged a complaint. Hel says they didn't sign up for no HoA. Once again, the Cabal is stand-offish, and the Herald leaves. We get our first Paradox Condition of the whole Chronicle: Hel makes it so that the tires of the Herald's car slowly deflates over an hour. What a petty thing to get an abyssal imago over.

At this point, Hel goes to do some hustling as previously stated. Cherrim goes to her green house where she's served an eviction notice from a rep of the Mercer, Colville, and Mulligan law firm (little do they know, it's going to be my "Wolfram & Heart" equivalent in the setting). Obviously, she's furious. She has 5 business days to vacate.

Meanwhile, Chufi and Drak execute step 1 of the plan to banish the, erm, Banisher. They decided to point the Banisher, who they've uncovered to be obsessed with Drak, at Power (though I suspect any Seer would do). They go-to the Library and work on then print out a fancy invitation they mean to accidentally drop at this guy's house. Thanks to the "stakeout" via scrying window, Chufi lands an address.

They depart at library's close at 10pm and out in the nearly empty lot, they're assaulted. First, Chufi did some Not Great(TM) things by psychically dominating someone for the sake of having a chauffer for the evening*, and then they find that said chauffer is now dead in the driver's seat. Then, vampires attack.

[Two acts of hubris in the game, and it's actually our first go at that. One for just psychically dominating someone, then over the presumed guilt for them having died while in Chufi's... "care"]

Two vampires (revenants specifically, but the players don't know that yet) assault our Mages getting good punches in on Drak specifically who tries to retaliate by turning the parking lot's streetlights into lasers. He fails this roll, then makes it a dramatic failure so what really happens is just blinding himself. There's a third presence here in the wings, however, with the duo of Mages in their sight, but they're waiting on a phone call...

One of Cherrim's greenhouse windows is smashed by a rock demanding the "church boy." To be continued.

In short--yes, but not as quickly as you'd like and maybe not even the path that you'd expect.

Right off the bat, we have the universe rooting for us with the appearance of The Sun--when it comes to a yes or no question, the sun is a definitive, in-your-face, absolute YES--which is good. The sun speaks of positivity, joy and happiness, success, all the good things in life. This is the universe being like I GOTCHU BOO and literally making your dreams come true so if you're looking for a simple answer, it's definitive, beyond shadow of a doubt yes.

But let's take a look at the other cards, for context.

The Six of Swords is what has me saying it's a "not just yet" moment, but before we get to that, let's focus on the Knight of Wands. This is the perfect compliment to The Sun--the Wands suit is a suit of action, and usually fast-paced. The Knight of Wands is the epitome of that--he's ready, man. He's a do-er. The Knight of Wands speaks of passion and success, of excitement, of grand adventure. He's not a "let's sit back, wait and see" kind of bitch--my man the Knight of Wands is a go-out-and-get-it kind of dude and the universe rewards him for that, doubly so with the appearance of The Sun. This tells me that these dreams you have--regardless of whether or not they'll fall in your lap (which they probably will, with the presence of The Sun confirming the universe is working for us)--regardless of that, they're as good as yours. Because if they don't fall in your lap--hell, you're going to to out and get them anyway.

about to write the world's longest post (a review? maybe?) because i don't know anyone else who has read mister impossible yet and if i do not write my thoughts down SOMEWHERE i will either combust or eat my own foot, probably (spoilers, obviously)

genuinely brokenhearted (and cried a lot) over ronan in this book. part of what i loved so much about cdth was the sense that ronan had at least made some progress in regards to his mental health, self-love, etc. and now we're seeing him in such a dark place again that it hurts to read. it was sad enough believing, for almost the entire book, that he was blindly idolizing bryde for this reason (declan's "ronan is a follower" speech in the cafe with carmen actually killed me), and i thought maggie was just going for the whole "unhappy people are more susceptible to cults" thing. but to find out that he MADE bryde? that he felt so alone and so hopeless that he dreamt THAT? this read like some sort of super-villain origin story. i know ronan believes he's doing the right thing, saving dreamers and dreams and all that, but at the core of it all he's really doing it because bryde told him to, and bryde only exists because ronan subconsciously hates his life so much he'll do whatever it takes to make himself a new one. that just makes me incredibly sad

uhhhhhhhh bad day for pynch stans. we didn't technically get the dreaded break up, but it feels like we did anyway. even the sweet moments (e.g. ronan's memory of adam's gloves) are immediately followed up by something sad (e.g. the memory not being enough to keep ronan from sticking with bryde) (also, fletcher tells the moderators that they're broken up, so does that mean adam told all his college friends he's single?) there are several moments in which ronan makes it very clear that he will (and does) prioritize what he's doing with bryde over his relationship with adam (hanging up on him at the end? what the fuck) and like, i'm definitely not saying his boyfriend should be the #1 most important thing in his life because that's not healthy, either, but the dude is clearly very unhappy & insecure in the relationship. i still think (hope?) that they'll get a happy ending because ronan definitely cares about adam deeply (not wanting bryde to say the word tamquam, keeping adam out of his dreamspace so he doesn't lose harvard, etc.) but things are looking pretty grim right now :/

adam loves ronan so much it makes me crazy. he could easily say "fuck this" after ronan doesn't speak to him for weeks, especially knowing that ronan's capable of reaching out because he still talks to declan and especially after being blocked from ronan's dreamspace, too. i would be pissed if i heard from my bf for the first time in weeks and found out he only called because he needed a place where he & the guy he ditched me for could crash. but adam still spends the free time i'm sure he doesn't actually have keeping tabs on ronan and reaching out to declan and pretty much doing everything in his power to help. and oh my god even after ronan hangs up on him we still see him scrying to try to get to him and i need to move on now before i scream (but first, declan lynch = #1 pynch stan??? the number of times he mentions adam when thinking about the things he wants ronan to keep safe, help me)

speaking of adam, i had to put the book down and take a lap after his first appearance. i cannot believe this boy is charging harvard kids for fake tarot readings and making hella cash off of it. KING. genuinely some fantastic adam content in this. i love that he talks to the gray man. i love that we are reminded that he's literally brilliant. but also, he makes me sad, too. when declan mentions how ronan is the ONE person who adam opens up to and how all of his harvard groupies are just "ducklings"........honey, i love you, please, please, please make some real friends

hennessy's pov also breaks my heart. it's maybe even worse to read than ronan's because she's fully aware of how unhappy she is and the bluntness of it slaps you across the face. the memory of her mom's painting was genuinely chilling (the lace pattern on the floor - was that how the Lace started? am i understanding that correctly?) and the fact that it was so dreadful she accidentally made a sweetmetal....poor hennessy :( also, the things she said to jordan, right after she made half a dozen real ass people crash their cars and didn't even bat an eye about it....yikes. i'm glad she teamed up with carmen and liliana, though. i love my team of wlw girlies (also really interesting that carmen/liliana believe the Lace is something out of hennessy's control while ronan/bryde believe it's something she can get rid of if she just tries hard enough. what the fuck is the Lace, it's driving me nuts)

jordan's pov!!!!!!! delicious, finally some good fucking food!!!!!!! i'm happy that she's starting to see herself as her own person, independent of hennessy, and the whole forgery/original work metaphor was really cool (her first original work being a portrait of declan 🥺🥺🥺) i loooooove her relationship with matthew and how she speaks to him and that they're able to connect with each other because they're both dreams. i love that she's able to make him feel more human

declan my beloved....my sweet......absolutely obsessed with him saying "screw politics, i'm leaning into my crime side" and OBSESSED with him being happy for once. i know the other shoe did drop and now things are all messed up again but it was so nice to see him so content, at least for a little while. he needed a break (also was laughing my ass off at all of ronan's dream creatures just climbing onto his bed in the morning and his screaming and how matthew was so used to it he BRUSHED HIS TEETH before going to help. iconic)

matthew's pov was also really upsetting but 🥺him deciding he's tired of just being treated like a pet and that he deserves to have a future so he goes to sign himself up to finish high school 🥺

quick note but the whole sweetmetal thing is really interesting as a concept. loooooved the way maggie incorporated the gardner museum heist into the story

omg wait how far in are you what’s the adam content like!!!

look, there isn’t a lot of adam content... like, at all. but I feel like it is appropriate because we get to focus on a lot of the other characters and their relationships. adam pops up here and there (definitely being one of the only responsible adults in the book haha, and ronan isn’t exactly having it?). he’s safe, running his tarot reading business with the crying club, living his best witchy life (although he does mention that isn’t “real” magic and he originally thought harvard was a bit “dead” when it came to ley line magic). 

if anything, the reason there isn’t more adam is because ronan won’t pick up the phone and call him. declan and adam have more interactions than ronan and adam haha.

My main questions after finishing Mister Impossible.

Spoilers below the cut.

1. Who keeps calling Matthew’s name? Gotta be the Lace, right?

2. Adam keeps in touch with Mr. Gray??? I am HERE for an Adam + Mr. Gray alliance, as anyone who’s read my fic can testify to lololol 

3. Is Bryde lying a bit about his origin? Yes, Ronan *did* dream him into existence but... I’m having a hard time envisioning Ronan dreaming someone so manipulative and cryptic. Maybe it’s the forest side of Bryde...? I’ve long since suspected that Bryde existed in another form (or in no form) before Ronan dreamt a body for him.

4. RE: the deleted Adam POV... Adam gets a call from Unknown Number that he ignores. We were, perhaps, meant to think this was Ronan calling but we now know it’s not. Maggie indicated there’s shit Adam’s dealing with at the moment that we don’t know about / aren’t expecting… maybe his parents are harrassing him? Trying to think who else would be trying to contact him from an unknown number.

5. Also re: the deleted Adam POV, Adam mentions at Harvard he has “the opportunity to study the human race”... are we meant to infer Adam is an anthropology major? Or is that strictly in reference to his Tarot racket he’s got going on?

6. Ronan doesn’t wake up at the end (then again, we don’t get confirmation that Hennessy does either). Three options here IMO: 1. Ronan is a dream (in that case WHO DREAMT HIM?) 2. No dreamers woke up after the ley line disappeared or 3. He’s just frozen cuz he brought something back with him.

Interested to hear what everyone else thought and what everyone else’s theories are.

Maggie Stiefvater~Rant YA edition pt.1

Let me start by saying that YA was never close to me.When I was younger I missed the trend of reading Young Adult. I only heard the opinions reviews about these books and saw the covers in the bookstore but none of them  encouraged me to try to read them.

But recently I wanted to give them a chance, thanks to my college friends who could talk hours about these books. And the one series that was the most recomended to me was The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater.

I started reading this series with an open mind because hey maybe I was wrong about YA the entire time? OH BOI I WAS SO WRONG !  

I have read the series in a month and I can't believe what inconsistent mess it was.

So forgive me if I miss something.

For context, I have read it in my native language and this books draged on and on. Like seriously I'm a fast reader but TRC took me like three times as normaly would do to finish it. So after that I checked the english version, because maybe it was the translation's fault. NOPE, while reading the orginal I wondered if I can even understand english.

For so long I wanted to write a rant about these books so here I am wasting my will to live and sleep on this hellsite. This is a part one, the next parts will be coming soon. 

Use of folklore/mythology

Ms. Stiefvater in all her series uses many different myths and legends or like she calls "steal" them for her works.

In the first book is described St. Mark's Eve and the main character sees the "ghost" of the other main character. After asking her aunt what it meant, she says: "There is only two reasons: either you’re his true love or you killed him."

Yes but actually no.The Eve of St. Mark was about seeing the "ghosts" of people who will die this year but a girl could see the face of her future husband on her smock by holding it before the fire, this is one of many similar superstitions. But there is nothing about his death.

Owen Glendower

The main quest of the story is to find the sleeping Welsh King, but why nobody asks what is he doing in North America, especially in Virginia of all places?

Owain Glyndŵr died in 1416 in Wales so how they moved his body to America? To yet undiscovered America mind you but okay lets ignore that for the plot sake.

So lets talk about association Glyndŵr with ravens which apperead in this book and well I searched the whole internet and founded only one guy associated with ravens: Sir Yyain who was based on the historical Owain mab Urien but not the Glyndŵr from TRC

Stiefvater is also using anglicized version of his name Owen Glendower, which is kinda disrespectful because he is a Welsh king and he has a Welsh name so maybe use his real name? It isn’t difficult to pronounce his name by the way. That’s why from any point in this rant I will use his real name.

And we know all know the main characters want to find him because he will grant them wishes. This is also bullshit because Glyndŵr fall into category of “King asleep in mountain” who will only awake to protect his country not be like jinn from Aladdin.

Ley line

The whole idea of ley lines is a New Age bullshit, because something  related to this in folklore are corpse roads and fairy paths. They are similar but have nothing in common with what ley lines are.

Tarot

In short, one of the main character pulls out the cart of Death and is told by psychic it means his demise BUT the cart of Death doesn’t mean literally death of person and even if you pointed in your story that this example means death it doesn’t change the fact.

BONUS ROUND (My friend gave me info about this)

In Scorpio Races, Stiefvater uses the myth of water horses, but uses only a fraction of it, leaving out the most important parts. From shape-shifting creatures that can be anything (from a old man to a bird) luring people to their deaths or fooling women in the shape of handsome young man, Stiefvater turns them into nothing more then a killer horses from sea.

The other thing is the name: capaill uisce. The name is irish or old irish and is equal to the Manx cabyll-ushtey. The problem is, the horses Stiefvater presents are closer to the Scottish each-uisge then to cabyll-ushtey. One could say "a water horse is a water horse, what does it matter?", to put it simple: capaill uisce is a water horse, but NOT all water horses are capaill uisce. The kelpie drowns people in fresh water, Welsh ceffyl dwr appears by waterfalls but doesn't drown their victims, and each-uisge are in the sea, devouring humans but leaving their livers. Those are only some examples. Would it be more logical to name the horses "each-uisge"? I don't know, if I knew were Thisby is, maybe I could say it for sure.

Her keys jangled loudly as they turned to allow entrance to the home, her smile as bright as ever as she looked over her shoulder at the man, beckoning for him to follow her into the warm space. When he entered, his senses were overloaded with what could only be described as her. The smell of what seemed to be chamomile, rosemary, and cedar filling his nostrils, mixing in with her coconut and honey scented shampoo he had grown so accustomed to. 

Sunlight peered through the many windows, making the crystals that adorned her home sparkle, her plants silently showing their thanks by growing big and strong from the water and light they had been provided with. Nazar charms similar to the one around her neck hung off the walls, acting as reminders of her travels, but also as a warning to any goers with negative intentions in her abode. 

A fluffy white cat came waltzing out from under the sofa that was by the balcony like he owned the place, rubbing against her leg in a good-natured greeting. She reached down, patting the creature before offering for the man to show affection to the fluff ball. He kindly declined, but quickly changed his mind at the first sign of a pout from the girl. She stood up, satisfied with the new relationship she had started between the cat, who he learned to be named Alpine, and the man.

He followed her back to her room, which not surprisingly, was just as much as a reflection of her as her living room was. More natural light flooded the area, another cat lounging atop what appeared to be a hamper, while simultaneously basking in warmth. 

She set her bag down on her low rising mattress, fishing out a seemingly old and worn box from an even bigger container that seemed to be oddly-orderly. She seemed to know where everything was though, so he trusted her process and what she was doing. 

Once she acquired what she was looking for, she gently reached for his metal hand. He didn’t flinch at the contact like he normally would, instead, trusting her completely, yet again. She guided him to a small ledge off the side of her apartment that could have easily been mistaken for a miniature jungle in the city. 

Both of them moved so they were sitting on small chairs, the burly man scared to break the flimsy material, not wanting to intrude or disturb the seemingly natural order of the home. She giggled at his behavior, telling him that it was alright and that she didn’t mind if he sat on the floor if that’s where he would be more comfortable. 

His face flushed a deep scarlet color, eliciting another giggle from the girl as she began her work. She opened the box, rummaging through the contents until she found what she had been trying to find. She pulled out what seemed to be a deck of playing cards, shuffling them a few times until she was content, the man’s icy blue eyes focusing intently as her ring adorned hands moved expertly.

His friends had made comments, Steve saying that she seemed a little, “off the wall” as he liked to put it, Sam adding in how he didn’t trust her or her methods. But the man had no trouble in telling them off, letting them know how truly wonderful she was, her free spirit only making him more inclined to the girl. But after some time, they both were able to see the positive impact she had on the man, helping restore him to who he was before, filling his empty shell that years of abuse from HYDRA left behind.

The man had been somewhat spiritual growing up, sure, church with his Ma and Pa and Becca on Sundays, praying if he ever felt compelled. But after everything that had happened he had little belief in anything or anyone, choosing to bottle up any feelings or emotions that would come along with doing so. But despite all of that, he sat in front of the girl, completely vulnerable as he allowed her to lead him on his path to moving on.

So you could say Bucky Barnes was not usually a spiritual person, but he would have to say that if he believed in anything, it was her.
