Mexico, Supreme Court, Thailand: Your Monday Evening Briefing
(Want to get this briefing by email? Here’s the sign-up.)
Good evening. Here’s the latest.
3. The West Wing is reorganizing to focus on confirming a Supreme Court nominee to fill the seat of Justice Anthony Kennedy.
One shift: Raj Shah, the deputy press secretary, will move to coordinating the president’s messaging about the nomination, which Mr. Trump has said he will announce next Monday.
On our podcast “The Daily,” we talk with Senator Susan Collins, Republican of Maine, one of just a few senators who may hold the nominee’s fate in their hands. She says she will not vote for any nominee who seeks to overturn Roe v. Wade and its guarantee of abortion rights.
_____
4. Financial planners say that if your divorce is looming, move fast.
The Republican tax law will eliminate a tax break for alimony payments finalized after Dec. 31. Americans who finalize or modify their divorce agreements starting in 2019 will no longer be able to deduct alimony.
_____
5. “I put family and country first.”
That was Michael Cohen, President Trump’s longtime fixer, answering the ABC anchor George Stephanopoulos. The question: What he would do if prosecutors looking at his business dealings — including hush money for women with accounts of affairs with Mr. Trump — offered leniency in exchange for incriminating information?
6. A minimum wage for Uber and Lyft drivers?
New York City’s taxi commission is considering new pay rules for ride-hailing apps that would set a minimum rate of $17.22 an hour after expenses.
If the rules go into effect, New York would be the first major American city to regulate driver pay, amid growing complaints about low wages in the industry.
_____
7. It has arrived: delivery in the shadow of Mount Everest.
Amazon, carrying big ambitions to expand in India, has recruited small businesses to get packages to remote customers. How remote? Try 11,562 feet up in the Himalayas.
Our correspondent followed a courier in the tiny town of Leh, the highest spot in the world where the company offers speedy delivery. “Over time,” an Amazon executive said, “the economics will work themselves out.”
8. Brazil eliminated Mexico from the World Cup with a 2-0 shutout. Above, Neymar, who opened the scoring in the 51st minute.
The defeat and the stage for it are sadly familiar for Mexico. The team departs the tournament in its first knockout-round game for the seventh straight World Cup — a stunning run of bad losses, bad matchups and just plain bad luck.
And Belgium triumphed in a 3-2 heartbreaker for Japan, which had led by 2-0.
Here’s our full coverage of the tournament. And our Offsides newsletter brings updates and analysis straight to your inbox, twice a week.
_____
9. More from sports: LeBron James is headed to Hollywood.
Among the questions to consider: Will the Lakers be a contender? Not with their current roster. Will James tolerate LaVar Ball’s antics? Unlikely.
10. Finally, some incredible news from northern Thailand: 12 boys and their soccer coach were found after nine days of being trapped in a cave.
They were penned in by floodwaters during a visit to the Tham Luang Cave complex, a popular tourist attraction. The riveting, desperate search involved hundreds of people from some 20 government agencies and half a dozen nations.
You can see the boys, who range in age from 11 to 16, and their 25-year-old coach, in this brief Facebook video posted by the Thai Navy SEALs.
The late-night shows are on hiatus this week, and we’ll pick up our roundups when they return.
Have a great night.

9. More from sports: LeBron James is headed to Hollywood.
Among the questions to consider: Will the Lakers be a contender? Not with their current roster. Will James tolerate LaVar Ball’s antics? Unlikely.
