“You pass!” Dr. Knoth moved the phoropter aside.

“Congratulations, Amy!” the receptionist calls from down the hall.

I scrunched my eyebrows, both uncertain how to respond to the praise in this situation and confused by the test results.

“But I have a really strong prescription…”

“Not any more!” Dr. Knoth sang, scribbling in her notes.

I gripped the glasses in my lap tighter. The fact that the clearness of my vision corroborated everything quashed further protest…though the disbelief lingered.

“And now,” she hefted out a contraption I had never seen before, “we test your laser vision.”
