More than a dozen states and the District of Columbia have filed lawsuits against TikTok on Tuesday, alleging the popular short-form video app is harming youth mental health by designing its platform to be addictive to kids.

The lawsuits stem from a national investigation into TikTok, which was launched in March 2022 by a bipartisan coalition of attorneys general from many states, including New York, California, Kentucky and New Jersey. All of the complaints were filed in state courts.

At the heart of each lawsuit is the TikTok algorithm, which powers what users see on the platform by populating the app’s main “For You” feed with content tailored to people’s interests. The lawsuits also emphasize design features that they say make children addicted to the platform, such as the ability to scroll endlessly through content, push notifications that come with built-in “buzzes” and face filters that create unattainable appearances for users.

In its filings, the District of Columbia called the algorithm “dopamine-inducing,” and said it was created to be intentionally addictive so the company could trap many young users into excessive use and keep them on its app for hours on end. TikTok does this despite knowing that these behaviors will lead to “profound psychological and physiological harms,” such as anxiety, depression, body dysmorphia and other long-lasting problems, the complaint said.

“It is profiting off the fact that it's addicting young people to its platform,” District of Columbia Attorney General Brian Schwalb said in an interview.

“We strongly disagree with these claims, many of which we believe to be inaccurate and misleading. We’re proud of and remain deeply committed to the work we’ve done to protect teens and we will continue to update and improve our product," said TikTok spokesman Alex Haurek in a reply to the lawsuits. "We’ve endeavored to work with the Attorneys General for over two years, and it is incredibly disappointing they have taken this step rather than work with us on constructive solutions to industrywide challenges.”

The social media firm does not allow children under 13 to sign up for its main service and restricts some content for everyone under 18. But Washington and several other states said in their filing that children can easily bypass those restrictions, allowing them to access the service adults use despite the company's claims that its platform is safe for children.

“TikTok claims that is safe for young people, but that is far from true. In New York and across the country, young people have died or gotten injured doing dangerous TikTok challenges and many more are feeling more sad, anxious, and depressed because of TikTok’s addictive features,” New York Attorney General Letitia James said in a statement.

Their lawsuit also takes aim at other parts of the company’s business.

The district alleges TikTok is operating as an “unlicensed virtual economy" by allowing people to purchase TikTok Coins – a virtual currency within the platform – and send “Gifts” to streamers on TikTok LIVE who can cash it out for real money. TikTok takes a 50% commission on these financial transactions but hasn’t registered as a money transmitter with the U.S. Treasury Department or authorities in the district, according to the complaint.

Officials say teens are frequently exploited for sexually explicit content through TikTok’s LIVE streaming feature, which has allowed the app to operate essentially as a “virtual strip club" without any age restrictions. They say the cut the company gets from the financial transactions allows it to profit from exploitation.

The 14 attorneys general say the goal of their lawsuits is to stop TikTok from using these features, impose financial penalties for their alleged illegal practices and collect damages for users that have been harmed.

Many states have filed lawsuits against TikTok and other tech companies over the past few years as a reckoning grows against prominent social media platforms and their ever-growing impact on young people’s lives. Arkansas has brought a legal challenge against YouTube, as well as Meta Platforms, which owns Facebook and Instagram and is being sued by dozens of states over allegations its harming young people's mental health. Graphic videos of animal abuse have circulated widely on Twitter in recent weeks, generating outrage and renewed concern over the platform’s moderation practices.

One such video, in which a kitten appears to be placed inside a blender and then killed, has become so notorious that reactions to it have become their own genre of internet content.

Laura Clemens, 46, said her 11-year-old son came home from his school in London two weeks ago and asked if she had seen the video.

“There’s something about a cat in a blender,” Clemens remembered her son saying.

Clemens said she went on Twitter and searched for “cat,” and the search box suggested searching for “cat in a blender.”

Clemens said that she clicked on the suggested search term and a gruesome video of what appeared to be a kitten being killed inside of a blender appeared instantly. For users who have not manually turned off autoplay, the video will begin rolling instantly. NBC News was able to replicate the same process to surface the video on Wednesday.

Clemens said she is grateful her child asked her about the video instead of simply going on Twitter and typing in the word “cat” by himself.

“I’m glad that my child has talked to me, but there must be lots of parents whose kids just look it up,” she said.

The spread of the video as well as its presence in Twitter’s suggested searches is part of a worrying trend of animal cruelty videos that have littered the social media platform following Elon Musk’s takeover, which included mass layoffs and deep cuts to the company’s content moderation and safety teams.

Last weekend, gory videos from two violent events in Texas spread on Twitter, with some users saying that the images had been pushed into the platform’s algorithmic “For You” feed.

The animal abuse videos appear to predate those videos. Various users have tweeted that they have seen the cat video, with some trying to get Musk’s attention on the issue — some dating back to early May. Neither Irwin nor Twitter safety responded to the tweet, Clemens said.

Yoel Roth, Twitter’s former head of trust and safety, told NBC News that he believes the company likely dismantled a series of safeguards meant to stop these kinds of autocomplete problems.

Roth explained that autocompleted search results on Twitter were internally known as “type-ahead search” and that the company had built a system to prevent illegal, illicit and dangerous content from appearing as autocompleting suggestions.

“There is an extensive, well-built and maintained list of things that filtered type-ahead search, and a lot of it was constructed with wildcards and regular expressions,” Roth said.

Roth said there was a several-step process to prevent gore and death videos from appearing in autocompleted search suggestions. The process was a combination of automatic and human moderation, which flagged animal cruelty and violent videos before they began to appear automatically in search results.

“Type-ahead search was really not easy to break. These are longstanding systems with multiple layers of redundancy,” said Roth. “If it just stops working, it almost defies probability.”

Autocomplete suggestions in search bars are a common feature on many social media platforms, and they can often surface disturbing content. The terms for “dog” and “cat” autocompleted viral animal cruelty videos in Twitter’s search box Thursday, when NBC News contacted the company for comment. Twitter’s press account automatically responded with a poop emoji, the company’s standard response for the last month.

As of Friday afternoon, Twitter appeared to have turned off its autocomplete suggestions in its search bar.

Second Verse, Same As The First

The train to Vernrot Harbour leaves once per night: A single carriage vehicle departs from one of Northwest Alternia’s larger city stations and travels down the lonely track, stopping at a couple equally secluded stations before arriving at its final destination.

Ashell had thought about taking this journey again many times before, but he never thought he’d actually go through with it.

It was frightening enough to return to one’s hometown, but Vernrot was more than just a sleepy fishing village. And now that he had lived in the bustling city of Block 136, he’d become well-aware of the strangeness of the place he grew up in.

He was the sole occupant left on the train; the few trolls who had accompanied him on the platform had left at one of the earlier stations. It probably wasn’t uncommon for the train to be empty at this point, given how the residents seldom left their town and even during peak tourist season one would easily be able to find a seat for the longer journey. Which means that he was the only troll to feel the shiver upon entering the town’s borders.

He watched as the rain started to pick up outside, the night sky completely obscured by the dark clouds. It was somewhat amusing to him that he had to prepare for such foul weather, dressing himself up in a dark olive green raincoat and keeping an umbrella in this modus as a back-up, as he distinctly recalled not having a single care for the constant rainfall when he was younger. It was simply a part of his life, and he never thought much of it until he experienced clear skies for the first time.

He also didn’t think much of the shadowy figures the train passed by, all peering into the windows of the carriage, but almost unnoticeable in the darkness.

As for why he was returning tonight, he couldn’t quite explain why. He had an inkling of a feeling - perhaps a compulsion, even - that now just felt right.

After all, why should he continue to be cautious of his old friend Vallis, given the kinds of company he currently keeps outside of town?

The station was nothing more than a concrete platform and a small shelter, the latter of which appeared to have been constructed by troll hands, lacking the aesthetic style of the carpenter drone-built shelters of the city. If the wooden sign with ‘VERNROT HARBOUR’ hand-carved into it was not enough of an indication of the location, the general vibe of the place certainly was. Ashell felt a distinct sense of wrongness as he left the train, as if the town itself was making it clear he no longer belonged.

… Or maybe that was just the anxiety talking, he told himself, flipping up the hood of his raincoat and clipping the snap buttons that hold the horn flaps in place.

He set off down the slightly overgrown path, passing the town’s lighthouse on the way. He never met the troll who looked after the building, as he always avoided it when he was younger. Too many rumours of strange occurrences even for this town, and a general distrust amongst the other residents made him wary, and the sight of what appeared to be some sort of spirit on the lighthouse’s balcony only confirmed those suspicions. Perhaps being undead gave him some form of advantage in this town, given his ties to the afterlife allowing him to see and converse with ghosts that would ordinarily be unnoticeable. 

He kept moving, down the stone steps that lead into the town proper, careful not to slip. Vernrot had hardly changed since since he left, most of the stores he remembered were still in business, the buildings were still weather-beaten and likely prone to leaks and mold, even the stray cat population didn’t seem to have changed, but now he could tell that ‘cat’ was a misnomer.  

Still, Ashell couldn’t help himself, and when one approached him and stared with its many soulful eyes, he stopped to pet it. Its purr sounded closer to the chittering of a swarm of insects, and when he pulled his hand away a centipede tried to latch to his coat sleeve. He made a face, shook to bug away, and carried on. 

Vallis’ hive was on the waterfront, with its own private pier. The building was on the larger side compared to the other residential hives, befitting of his status as a indigo-purple cusp. Just like the rest of the town, it remained frozen in time, identical to Ashell’s memories of when visiting was much more common. And just like the rest of the town, there was that distinct wrongness in the air, except rather than that sickening foreboding feeling that permeated in the air, the closer he got to the front door it was… Pleasant. Just like the muffled melody he could hear inside the hive. He figured the scientist must be listening to some music.

He paused for a moment, then knocked on the door a little louder than he normally would, in case he couldn’t be heard over the song.

At first, there was nothing.

Then, there was the sound of the door unlocking with a distinct click, and another sound that Ashell could not identify. It struck him as odd that Vallis would supposedly unlock the door but not open it to greet him, but… Maybe he’d gotten some remote locks installed? He was always quite scatterbrained, so having the means to remotely lock and unlock the door would be useful, especially when he was engrossed in some sort of experiment in his lab.

Well… It was unlocked, and there was only one way to find out the answer.

He opened the door, and his eyes immediately went wide, pupils shrinking to pinpricks.

“Ah-” He tried to speak, but the words died in his throat while his mouth hung agape. He could not comprehend what he was seeing.

A large, unidentifiable mass took up the majority of the room. Inky black tentacles twisted and undulated, like a flower rapidly blooming and decaying and blooming again in front of Ashell’s eyes. A soft glow pulsated in a sequential pattern down each tentacle, in time with the pleasant humming emanating from the centre of the mass. It was difficult to look at, yet utterly captivating. Its presence filled the room with itself, and though it could not see or speak, Ashell felt as if he could understand it perfectly. 

It was joyful, curious, and unmistakably… 

“Vallis…?” 

The what-was-once-a-cuspblood did not respond to his name and continued his song, tentacles swaying to and fro as if he was dancing. They kept unfurling and extending to impossible lengths, and Ashell felt himself drawn away from the door so a tentacle could gently close it behind him. He obediently stepped closer towards the mass, yet paradoxically felt frozen in place, utterly entranced.

He should have been afraid, he should have looked away, he should have turned and ran, but he couldn’t. The song was two joyous, it filled and swirled around his head and he felt that same joy within his very being. It was a feeling that Vallis couldn’t help but share while in this state, he was the mass of tentacles, the song, and the space within the room itself. 

That joyful feeling was quickly interrupted by something cold and slimy poke the jadeblood’s neck. Ashell shivered and yelped in surprise, and attempted to bat it away. The back of his hand connected with the appendage in question, one of the many tentacles belonging to the horrorterror. It had the iridescence of a deep black ink that reminded Ashell of the magical inks his moirail made for his business, and a trail of purple spots formed a perfectly straight line across the top, glowing in a steady pattern.

The tentacle recoiled at the touch, but then chose to gently twist around his wrist instead. The jadeblood flicked his wrist and struggled free, but the horrorterror was not putting up a fight in the slightest. Somehow, it seemed as if all he wanted to do was to grasp Ashell’s hand, and the catbat troll wondered if maybe he should just… Let it.  

As he did, he felt a second tentacle slide past his back. It curled around his chest, smearing inky residue on his clothes, and the tip of the appendage rested against his heart.

Such an act should have been disturbing, as Ashell recalled that wrapping and constricting its prey is exactly how an octopus feeds, but somehow, he did not feel any malice emanating from Vallis.  

The tentacles did not coil or constrict, they merely poked and rested against Ashell with almost childlike curiosity. Then it hit him. They were not seeking to harm him, they were looking for a pulse. 

They would not find one, of course, and Ashell suddenly remembered that he was able to speak.

“That, ah… Might be a little difficult,” he said with a nervous laugh. “Since I left this town, I, ah… I died, and came back.”

He felt the air shift around him, the humming taking on a distinctly curious tone. It seemed strange that Vallis was supposedly incapable of speech, since Ashell knew very well that Thrixe could utilise multiple voices at once. The Choir gave him a migraine, but this… Felt rather pleasant, actually. It surprised Ashe how relaxed he felt. Had he been worrying about this meeting for no reason?

But, at the same time… It felt wrong. This Vallis seemed happy, but too simple. The tentacles gently poked and patted Ashe like he had never seen a troll in his life. Maybe he hadn’t met a rainbowdrinker in the flesh, but if it was the Vallis he knew, he would be blabbering at a mile a minute about how fascinated he was, and listing the many experiments he’d wish to conduct on the jadeblood.

How bizarre, that a being so full of song could be simultaneously so horrendously silent. 

Ashe smiled sympathetically at Vallis - unaware if the cluster of tentacles he was staring at was where a face should be - and reached out to place a hand on one of the inky appendages.

“Are you, ah… Okay, being like this? Tuuya had told me that you had changed, but, well… I didn’t know it was like this.” There was a slight hint of humour in his tone, or perhaps simply nervousness. 

Vallis’ glow spots pulsated, and the empty space within the room felt lighter, brighter. Ashell could smell the salty tang of seawater, recalling memories of spending time on the beach during a warm summer night. The horrorterror was content, excited even, but his guest did not feel the same way. It was wrong.

The jadeblood gritted his teeth, trying to shake away the thoughts of warmth and joy swirling around the room, and began to walk closer to the mass of tentacles that was once his old friend.

Thrixe, Tuuya, Ullane, Jikiro, Cheran - All of them would have told him to run in the other direction. That it wasn’t safe, that terrors couldn’t be reasoned with, that suffering wasn’t noble and putting himself in danger was senseless. But, he returned to Vernrot to reconnect with Vallis, not to abandon him for good.

Besides, how could he leave when he was having such a good time? This song was beautiful, so light and airy, it made him want to listen forev-

One of Vallis’ tentacles brushed past his cheek and another patted his head, snapping the jadeblood out of his trance. 

It made Ashell wonder, was Vallis trying to make sure he stayed lucid? Or was he merely playing with the new toy that had entered his hive?

If it was the former, that meant he wasn’t too far gone. He hadn’t abandoned himself completely. He could be talked to, and reasoned with. 

Ashell was right in front of the writhing mass of tentacles now. It hurt to stare at for too long, both in terms of being an eldritch horror and because the flickering glow spots were blinding. He was glad that his moirail had been encouraging him to up his blood intake, because if staring at the lights was damaging his retinas, the molecules were regenerating within seconds. 

But he kept his gaze steady, at the approximate height Vallis would stand in regular form. He was always taller than the jadeblood, so Ashell could theorise he would be a few inches above six foot, provided nothing stunted his growth after Ashell had left Vernrot Harbour.

“Vallis, I, ah… I came to visit, because… It’s been so long, hasn’t it? I’m sorry I, well… Got so busy that I couldn’t do it earlier. But, I guess… We both changed, I became a rainbowdrinker and, you… Well, if I hadn’t met Thrixe before, I wouldn’t think such a thing was possible, aha.” 

Ashell’s voice wavered slightly, and he heard no response from the horrorterror apart from his constant singing. He felt Vallis’ curiosity in his melody, and the tentacles slowly encircled him, undulating like the waves on a calm ocean. The jadeblood had more than enough room to move around, and despite being unable to flee he didn’t feel claustrophobic in the slightest. In fact, it was somewhat comforting.

His friend wasn’t angry for abandoning him, nor did he appear keen to harm and dissect him like he had feared. He could have been constricted until all his bones broke, torn from limb to limb, swallowed up by the infinite mass of tentacles of tentacles… But he wasn’t.

He felt a little bad that he had doubted his childhood friend for so long. 

“But, well… I can’t speak to you like this, can I? I can, ah… Feel your emotions, and I’m sure you have, well… A lot of questions, but… Are you able to change back? So, well… We can talk again, like old times.” The jadeblood smiled, and extended out a hand.

There was a pause, as if for a moment the eldritch horror did not know what to do. This world that has opened up to him was so wondrous, so beautiful, so full of sounds and experiences he could not feel to this extent as a troll! The more he was able to maintain this form, the less he wanted to go back! 

But, while he could hear the troll in front of him and recognise his voice - still soft as he remembered it, but his accent had faded over time, - he could not speak back. He could hear the electrical impulses in his brain and the blood cells travelling throughout his body - much quieter and slower than an ordinary troll on account of being undead, - he could not see him. But he could still…

Vallis reached out, and wrapped a tentacle around Ashell’s outstretched hand.

The song concluded for a brief moment, then exploded into a full chorus in an unintelligible language as all the remaining tentacles retracted in on themselves, twisting themselves into knots and morphing at a sickening pace. 

Ashell could not look away even if he wanted to. His eyes had stopped functioning. 

Right in front of him, the horrorterror’s body morphed into a grotesque parody of a troll - tentacles shifting to form veins, organs, bones, muscles. Ashell witnessed rows of shark like teeth form in Vallis’ mouth, nails grow from fingertips and sharpen into thick black claws, eyeballs inflating within his sockets and rolling in place to stare back at the jadeblood, blackened horns hardening and sharpening themselves, freckled skin spreading across the surface of his body, hair sprouting from the top of his head and tying itself back into the same bun he always wore, thin leafy fins exploding from his face, arms, legs, and back, and clothes neatly returning to place. 

Vallis’ proper troll hand now grasped his, and pulled him into a hug. Apart from some biological oddities caused by his eldritch hybridity, he was exactly the same as Ashell had remembered him. Still cheery and enthusiastic as ever, still bright-eyed and curious, and still wearing a labcoat as casual clothing.

“Ashell! It’s been so long! I never thought you would return. And. In such a strange state. Haha,” the cuspblood beamed, and even back in his troll form he couldn’t help but warm up the atmosphere with the amount of joy emanating from him. “We have so much to talk about! Yes? About the sweeps we have-”

Drip.

Vallis pulled away from the hug and looked down. A smear of jade blood had landed on his pristine white lab coat. 

Ashell had gone limp in his arms, head lolled forwards, eyes wide with shock and unblinking. Blood was leaking from his eyes, his ears, and his nose. 

“-Ah. Oh. Oh dear.”

He would recover, Vallis was sure of it, rainbowdrinkers are very resilient creatures. Still, it did put a damper on their reuniting, and he did hope his friend would not be too upset with him from causing his mind to melt slightly from witnessing his transformation. That would cause far, far too many issues, and- He had mentioned Tuuya and Thrixe, didn’t he?

Oh. Oh no. This could be a real problem. 

He scooped the jadeblood into his arms and carried him over to the couch, somewhat-frantically humming a calming melody he had once heard Zanzul sing. It was the one she used to restore a brain she had constructed for Vallis to practice his own singing without harming trolls. 

If it can fix that, he can fix Ashell.

The Van Buren Street Station, 132 E. Van Buren at Michigan Avenue, is a commuter rail station in downtown Chicago serving the southbound Metra Electric Line, as well as the South Shore Line to Gary and South Bend, Indana.. It is the oldest active station building on the Metra Electric line. The station is located in Grant Park to the east of Michigan Avenue at Van Buren Street.

One of the station's entrances is a replica of an Hector Guimard-designed, Art Nouveau-style Paris Métro entrance. The entrance was given to Chicago as a gift by the city of Paris in 2001. The Guimard entrance will be relocated as part of a station renovation to be completed by 2027.

The Van Buren Station is the first Metra stop south of the Millenium Station, the northern terminus of the South Shore Line.

The station is completely invisible from the street, constructed below grade, one level below Grant Park. From Michigan Avenue, passengers descend stairs to a long, featureless tunnel about a block long, which splits into up and down ramps that easily confuse the visitor, and are inadequately labeled for the ticket office and main level, or down toward Platform 2 access.

I saw the Van Buren Street Station for the first time when I took a train to Hyde Park, and decided not to depart from Millenium Station, which can be a confusing space to navigate. Nothing prepared me for this underground slice of history, and its largely intact tile and terra cotta waiting areas.

The station is below the level of the park, only its roof surrounded by a balustrade visible from above. The pedestrian viaduct over its center leads to the eastern side of Grant Park and the Lincoln statue. Entrances are from the sidewalk on the west side of Michigan Avenue, and from the Guimard Paris metro and stairs at "Van Buren Entrance" in the screencap above.

The station's placement is illustrated in the above plan, in The Inland Architect and News Record, Vol. XXIX No. 1, February 1897, Special Supplement p. 2.

"Francis T. Bacon was the supervising architect of the Illinois Central Railroad system from the mid-1890s until 1907. Bacon died in Chicago on June 18, 1909, at the age of 43, after having been in private practice for two years." - Wikipedia entry

The Engineering Record, Building Record and Sanitary Engineer, Volume 60, 1909, cited in the wikipedia entry, doesn't reveal any further details of his life.

In this section, the station wall is heavily buttressed on the left, under the ground of Grant Park. A balustrade surrounds the ground-level roof, and the train platform is at right.

A glowing contemporary description of the station from The Inland Architect details the Waiting rooms' features and construction materials:

After passing the ticket inspectors, those taking express trains turn to the right and those for local trains to the left, in the central distributing corridor. From this corridor the passengers are ushered into two magnificent waiting rooms, each 34 feet by 106 feet and 9 ½ feet high. These rooms, for beauty, substantiality and completeness of appointments and conveniences, will compare favorably with those of any railway station in the world, even though naturally restricted in height of ceiling. The floors of the wating and toilet rooms, also corridor, are all paved with English floor tile; the foyer, vestibule and south entrance are paved with ceramic mosaic, and the bas throughout is of polished Tennessee marble. The walls are faced with Maw’s écru glazed tile, 3 by 6 inches, patented lock back, and the ceilings are of cast plates of stucco, forming a design of Gothic tracery. The cornices and girders and also finished in stucco, the point of junction with the glazed tile walls being covered with a mahogany molding. There are two rows of cast-iron columns in each room, which are incased in écru glazed terra cotta, elaborately molded and ornamented.

The windows of the ticket offices are covered with elaborate, handmade, wrought-iron grilles, some of which are polished and electroplated with bronze.

The station originally featured, apart from two waiting rooms, smoking rooms, a ladies' retiring room and lavatory, and a matron's room at the south end of the building.

The men's lavatory, bootblacking stand, toilet and janitor rooms are at the north end. There are also private lavatories for the attendants and locker rooms for the railroad employees. All these are under the space of 14 feet wide and 300 feet along the park side, and already occupied by the entrances, and are lighted through ceilings of cast iron and glass.

The tiles on the walls were manufactured by Maw & Co., of Shropshire, England, and are supplied and set by their agents, Hawes & Dodd, of this city, and are chiefly remarkable for their evenness of color, highly finished glaze, and freedom from the technical fault known as "Crazing."

The Inland Architect article also noted the building's fireproof construction, including terra-cotta-clad iron columns, and that the entire interior was washable.

Not all of the station's original features remain. The cast-plaster ornamental ceiling is long gone, as are some of the more elaborate decorative elements, such as scrolled wall brackets and an ornamental drinking fountain shown in a period photo below.

No trace remains of the original marble and bronze recessed drinking fountains or decorative brackets above.

The column bases and bright inlaid flooring, in need of some restoration, are still in place.

The tilework remains intact, but the original ornamental ceiling has been replaced, as well as some other decorative elements.

Original mahogany waiting-room furniture includes this curved corner bench. The benches have brass feet, to facilitate cleaning the floors.
