🥧 if you’re still taking wip questions :)
Literally always :) and also my favorite question because everything I write is about food even if it isn't.
In the Shitty Backpacking WIP, Tanis and Martin and Coradri have to get by on scrounging & foraging because Tanis declares it too risky to go into town. He does most of the cooking, and he's decent at it (though utilitarian).
Some of the camp meals:
- Roast daylily bulbs: u know how foragers drag home a basket of leafs from outside and act like they're serving u tender baby spinach instead of lawn clippings (me 🫣), but daylily tubers are genuinely fucking tasty. Tanis chars them directly on coals, but real talk: coat them in oil and salt and roast them in the oven like extra-baby potatoes.
- Grouse: one of the things I like about hunting grouse is that dressing them is incredibly easy. Lay it on its back, step on the wings, and pull up on the feet. It's brutal but fuck a pluck, nobody has time for that. Remove the innards, saving the heart and liver for later. Place the whole grouse in a pot and cover with water, and add some blackberries and crabapples to balance the rich, gamey flavor. Cook for an hour and serve.
- Restorative pottage: Take a cookpot and heat a glob of lard in it. Gently pan fry the chopped grouse offal along with some wild onions and sliced dryad's saddle polypore, just enough to get a light sear. Fill pot with water, and add any remaining grouse bones for flavor and body. Throw in some dry grain (amount depending on your desired thickness of the final dish, I prefer it soupy), then cover and simmer for 20 mins. Then add a fistful of lady's smock leaves and chopped fennel stems, and more wild onions. Cook for 10 more mins or until it turns into an edible glop. To finish, add a pinch of ash, because you didn't think to buy any salt on your way to Kvatch.
- Evening tea: Fennel seeds and a small strip of dried citrus peel for flavor and digestion, and a pinch of powdered green stain cup cap to knock your traumatized companions the fuck out.
#asks#ty🖤🖤🖤#aside from a few liberties with in-game alchemy ingredients this is all based on stuff I've cooked IRL over a fire#food

November 2021: Day Before Thanksgiving

Not-My-Cat sleeping in a warm spot amongst the elephant ears in our front flower bed:

Earlier in the year, we had thrown some lawn clippings, mulched leaves & other yard waste into a couple of garbage cans because we didn’t have room in the compost bins. While transferring that matter to the compost bins today, I found a foot thick layer of this leaf mold in the bottom of one of the cans & used it to cover a portion of the backyard garden bed that was ready for its winter blanket:

The doc took off my splint this week & replaced it with this buddy brace. I was glad to have the splint off because my hand was stinking like a foot & I was dying to wash it. The fracture is healing but it is still sore & plainly visible in the x-rays they took. I have the removable splint I got at the ER so I wear it when my hand gets tired/sore or I feel like it needs more support:

Volunteer elephant ear. I just notice it today but it has obviously been growing for awhile:

I kind of went crazy buying food for the birds:

Given how cold it has been lately, I was surprised how many honeybees were out doing their thing:

Coordinating Landscape Maintenance Efforts Reduces Job Time

One of the main functions of a landscape maintenance company is to visit the site on a regular basis, mow the grass and improve the appearance of the premises. This is usually done every week or every other week, depending on the growing season and climate of the region. The landscape maintenance crew will usually handle a cut with the lawn mower, plus trimming with a weed eater, using an edger and a leaf blower to make the property look professional and well-kept.
Crew Members While it is possible for one person to do an entire site by themselves, it is time consuming. Having a team of three or more employees working simultaneously shortens the labor time considerably. With each person working on a different apparatus, they all start in a different area. One will follow behind the other until all aspects of the landscape maintenance contract are complete. As the crew works together longer, they will know exactly how much of a path to create in what they do so that the other team members can work quickly and efficiently behind them. Each works the piece of equipment best suited to their strengths for a top quality finished product. Some companies require their crew members to be proficient on all apparatus, while others prefer someone who can do something quickly and do it well.
Trimming The person running the string trimmer, also called a weedeater, will start on one end of the property. The equipment is fairly easy to remove from the trailer and get going before the other devices. This crew member will walk along sidewalks, fences, obstructions, stepping stones and walkways taking down weeds and grass. Any small median strips or islands will also be covered with string trimmers. Depending on the size of the site, this person may finish trimming the property and move on to something else when they are finished.
Mowing Using a riding lawnmower is very efficient for commercial landscape maintenance contacts. Where they will not fit, a walk-behind lawnmower is used instead. The person on the mower will cut the grass in all areas not covered by the string trimmer.
Edger The edger will go behind the mower wherever the trimming is complete. When done properly, this creates a finished, professional line of grass that does not creep over sidewalks and driveways or curbs. Leaving too much of a gap between the grass and the curb line exposes too much dirt and looks unattractive.
Blowing Leaf blowers are used for more than just leaves. The last crew member to walk the property is on the leaf blower. All grass clippings, weeds and other debris are blown off of walkways and driveways into the grass to eliminate any evidence that the property was recently cut. It gives the area weed-crew a clean appearance that is aesthetically pleasing.

To the lawn attention professional however, there is usually so much more concerned in trimming lawns accurately, not just to accomplish some sort of beautiful looking carpet involving green once the cutting is definitely completed, but throughout knowing that what sort of yard is regularly cut additionally plays a large take into account the overall health connected with the lawn itself. Sure, mowing methods do get a direct health give you the lawn when sometimes done correctly or inaccurately.

When we think with regards to what we can accomplish and alter with garden mowing practices, there are actually only two factors coming into play. The initial is the length of time we preserve the leaf from the compétition when mowing, and also the subsequent is the frequency in the lawn mowing service. Plus its from these two procedures which we can greatly adjust the well being of our own lawns for the a great deal better or maybe for the a whole lot worse.
Keeping Yards With Some sort of Long Leaf
Photosynthesis is actually the process of grass along with plants which usually takes sunlight and uses in which electricity to create meals for the grass as well as plant out of typically the offered nutrients in often the soil. The actual longer the actual leaf on the lawn, instantly increases the volume of foods the turf will then develop for itself to be balanced and strong. While a new backyard which is cut at small heights can certainly produce much less foodstuff, and thus these yards will demand far greater consideration to their overall fitness, or even otherwise risk becoming sick and tired or even at chance of possible loss of life associated with the lawn.
With this particular expertise, we can after that easily notice that lawns which often are subject to incomplete shaded conditions will want to have their very own tea leaf kept longer when compared to a yard which is being produced in full sun. The particular part shaded turf calls for a much longer leaf for you to power far more photosynthesis using less sunlight. Whereas the lawn fully sun may easily have the loose tea leaf length kept very much quicker and still maintain the particular exact same level of photosynthesis and meal production.
For that reason, this garden mowing hint is a straight-forward a single to understand and accommodate, and is something which will can have a serious impression on the health regarding our grass, just with the simple fact showing how long we keep typically the grass leaf under distinct sunlight or shade situations.
Occurrence Of Lawn Cutting
When lawn mowing can easily be a laborious task intended for many busy people, then one which we are most guilty of postponing to get too long sometimes, normal lawn mowing is furthermore necessary for overall lawn wellbeing.
The initial reason for preserving regular backyard mowing will be that if we abandon lawns to become way too long involving mowings, and then the thatch part will certainly increase in the yard, as well as the crowns of often the turf may raise larger... which any time eventually cut, can easily lead to garden scalping or finding the grass dying off within regions where the crowns with the lawn have been taken off if mowing. Leaving your lawns long between mowing is usually always a superior risk involving causing lawn injury whenever the turf is eventually mowed.
While the earlier mentioned example of this is a worst type of case predicament of making lawns with regard to far far too long in between mowing and trimming, even regular mowing needs to be given careful consideration because to occurrence.
While typical maintenance means that not as well much leaf stuff is definitely removed at any one service, which then will keep the actual lawn looking more environmentally friendly in addition to without even gentle scalping, there may be one considerably more factor to consider regarding timing of cutting the lawns... which is mulch trimming.
Mulch mowing is actually if we put a select in the rear of any specially made lawn mower, which as an alternative to collecting the particular grass clippings, sends individuals same clippings throughout the mower blades of the mower more than once to finely chop these people into very small bits, ahead of depositing those very same clippings into the backyard.
Mulch cutting is some sort of wonderful way to foodstuff typically the lawn with it is own availabilit of nutrients, since well as insulating often the lawn soil from abnormal moisture loss in gratifying weather. Mowing more routinely will make sure these grass clippings are going to be cut up possibly finer and is likely in a lesser amount of quantity, which in turn allows this specific natural mulch to bust down into the yard land much more easily. So the all round mulching process is drastically much more efficient when the garden is mowed more generally.
Conclusion
While in st. kitts are a lot of factors involved in preserving any lawn green as well as healthy, one of the actual least perceived considerations connected with this process could be the simple lawn mower, that many of us hardly ever think associated with being a lawn care instrument which could improve lawn wellness untreated. However we could see clearly exactly how only two small becomes just how we mow our turf can have tremendous positive aspects on this lawn health.

The Seek app is great for helping to identify plants. (and other wildlife!) You pretty much just use your phone camera to focus in on it and it will identify most wildlife. Some are a little tougher but it will get you as close as it can so you have a starting point to look it up on your own.
Try it sometime and see how many “weeds” are actually beneficial native wildflowers! And how many are invasive and should be removed. (It’s sort of funny that I noticed a particular plant taking over the backyard before I had thought to try to identify things and I pulled it all out because it was very obviously choking other things out. When I did think to identify a few returning bits of it, turns out that, yup, highly invasive to the area.)
Now what was a lawn space (that had cement and other debris from construction poured over it and buried in it so not much of anything actually grew there) at my place has progressed to the point of a wildflower garden with some taller-than-me native grasses (arranged nicely and well kept up so they look like the intentional landscaping they are) and native saplings (most are about the size of large bushes now. One is still tiny.) It’s already attracting several kinds of pollinators, lizards, frogs, toads, and birds! It’s cool to wake up to several ibises and a heron hunting in the front yard.
As for upkeep, rather than messing with a lawn mower, trimmer, and leaf blower, I hand trim whatever looks scraggly with hedge clippers (it’s easy to avoid cutting anything you don’t want to that way) and leave the clippings as “mulch”. It works well, gets me up early enough to see pretty sun rises and butterflies at rest on some of the plants, and saves me a trip to the gym. (It does exercise some muscles!)
I’m sure native garden upkeep like this could be offered as a service for anyone who wants/needs it rather than mowing :D

I...tried to make a meme and got carried away and made A Thing that is like partially unfinished because i spent like 3 hours on it and then got tired.
I think this is mostly scientifically accurate but truth be told, there seems to be relatively little research on succession in regards to lawns specifically (as opposed to like, pastures). I am not exaggerating how bad they are for biodiversity though—recent research has referred to them as "ecological deserts."

How To Mow Your Lawn

Mowing a lawn is an important step in maintaining a healthy and attractive yard. Here are the steps to follow for mowing your lawn:
Make sure your lawn mower is in good working condition. Check the oil and gas levels, and sharpen or replace the blades as needed.
Set your mower to the appropriate cutting height for your lawn. The general rule of thumb is to never remove more than one-third of the leaf blade at a time.
Begin mowing at the edge of the lawn and work your way inward, mowing in a pattern of straight lines. Overlap your previous pass by a couple of inches to make sure you get a clean cut.
Avoid mowing when the grass is wet, as wet grass can clog the mower deck and leave uneven clumps of grass.
When you're finished mowing, be sure to clean up any clippings or debris from the lawn.
Mow your lawn often enough that you are not removing more than 1/3 of the grass blade at a time. This will help to promote healthy growth and prevent scalping of the lawn.
In general, lawns should be mowed once a week during the growing season. However, the frequency of mowing may vary depending on the weather, your grass species, and how fast your lawn is growing.
It's also important to vary the mowing direction to avoid creating ruts and compaction on your lawn.
Once you've finished mowing, you can use a grass trimmer to edge around sidewalks, driveways, and other hard surfaces.
By following these steps, you'll be able to mow your lawn quickly and efficiently, leaving it looking healthy and attractive.
