The last place we left off - Chapter 4 - greenapricot - Lewis (TV) [Ao3]
Title: The last place we left off - Chapter 4 Author: greenapricot Fandom: Lewis Characters: Robbie Lewis, James Hathaway, Laura Hobson, Duncan Hunter (epistolarily) Pairing: James Hathaway/Robbie Lewis, Laura Hobson/Robbie Lewis Rating: Mature Word count: 2885 (of ~35k) Chapter: 4 of 10 Warnings: None
They take a different path back to the car, a longer trail that loops closer to the sea, lingering over the view, holding hands when the trail is wide enough to allow it. It feels right in a way few other things in James’ life ever have, as if this, of all things, is where he was headed all along, though he couldn’t see the way through all the twists and turns.
By the time they make it back to the house, footsore and hungry and content, Laura is there waiting for them.
“You talked,” she says from the sofa when they come through the door. James is about to ask how she knew when she nods at their hands. He looks down to see his fingers twined with Robbie’s; he doesn’t remember taking his hand again after they took off their boots. Somehow in the past few hours, holding hands with Robbie has become automatic, easy, something he does without thinking.
“Sorry.” James lets go of Robbie and steps away.
“Don’t be.” Laura smiles, putting her book down on the sofa and walking over to them. “Good talk, then?”
“Aye,” Robbie says. James nods.
“I’m glad.” She rests her hand on James’ arm, smiling up at him—not unlike the way she did in the airport two months ago when she thanked him for encouraging Robbie to come to New Zealand with her in the first place. “What have you decided?”

Sacred (Chapter 9: Family Gossip) on AO3
Lewis is recovering after being stabbed during an arrest. Hathaway gets an early opportunity to clear the air thanks to an overheard conversation, and reassures Lyn that her father is in good hands. With that established, the two of them find some light relief in gossiping.
Silence and a closed door greet them when they return to Robbie’s room. Lyn peeps through the inset window and draws back with a delighted grin, elbowing James in the ribs as he leans over to look. Robbie is fast asleep in the bed with Laura seated in the chair alongside, also dozing with her hand entwined in his. Lyn pushes him towards a set of chairs in the corridor and sinks down.
“What is the strength of that, do you think?”
“Well, they are certainly good friends…”
“James!!!”
“Hold on now! I do have to work with them both, you know. And for your information, they are the most confusing people imaginable.”

Early on in their relationship, Robbie struggles with the need for them to keep their relationship quiet and the disappointment in James' eyes when discretion forces them to limit their public celebration of Robbie's birthday.
The Case of the Missing Macchiato by wendymr
2,138 Words, Gen, pre-James/Robbie, Rated G, No Archive Warnings Apply It's just a macchiato, James thinks. And a pint or pub meal after work. A small tradition they'd formed over the years to celebrate his birthday. But this year, the coffee—and Lewis—are nowhere to be seen all day. Exquisitely written hurt/comfort.
The Best Present by stormonmyskin

Unsuitable Gifts by sasha1600
100 Words, Gen, Rated G, No Archive Warnings Apply Drabble. Lizzie can't believe her eyes when she notices the birthday gift left on her boss's desk. A short and sweet outsider pov, that hints at what lies underneath James' crisp black suits.

This captures the relationship between the three of them so beautifully, with all the comfortable intimacy and domesticity between them, and just the right amount of cheeky teasing, sexual tension, and bittersweet memories of the past for seasoning. Heartbreaking dialogues from the Morseverse
Some of the shortest dialogues in the Morseverse shows are the most heartbreaking.
From the Endeavour finale (Exeunt) we have
Thursday: You'll keep an eye? Morse: Always.
And then from the IM finale (The Remorseful Day), there is that iconic scene where Lewis kisses Morse's body on the forehead and whispers "Goodbye, Sir" before walking away.
Finally, in the Lewis finale (What Lies Tangled), it is Laura Hobson who packs more emotional punch into her 5 minutes than the rest of the 85 minutes put together.
Lewis: Ow!
Hathaway: Well I think um I'll leave you guys to get on with it.
Lewis: What was that for?
Hobson: For putting yourself in harm's way.

A bare minute later, comes the suckerpunch - "Like Morse?"

And then, upon Maddox coming back in to call Lewis...
Hobson: Go. Be brilliant.

Laura’s face - it’s as if she is saying “stop pretending already, Robbie! Either you are in love with him or you have pretty much adopted him. Whichever it is, can you stop acting like he is just a colleague?” 🙄🙄🙄

This is just perfect. How I wish the original IM show had skipped all the in-between pathologists and gone straight from Max to Laura upon his retirement. And perhaps given us a few scenes with both of them together, taking on Morse while Lewis tries to smother his appreciative grins in the background.
Our old friend…

Title: The Names of All the Wind - Chapter 9 Author: greenapricot Fandom: Lewis Characters: Robbie Lewis, James Hathaway, Laura Hobson Pairing: James Hathaway/Robbie Lewis Rating: Teen Word count: 2209 Chapter 9 of 9 (fic now complete!) Warnings: None
I sort of—” Robbie takes a sip of his pint, glances at Laura, then at the ducks swimming against the current. He’s unsure how to explain James to himself, let alone to Laura; how they fit without even trying, how they had been literally drawn to each other, how there is more between them than their unintentionally formed mystic connection. He’s smiling again just thinking about it, smiling still. Simple is probably best. “I met someone while I was there.” His face goes hot as the words leave his mouth.
“Did you now?” Laura raises an eyebrow salaciously, grinning at him over the rim of her glass as she sips her gin and tonic. She is having far too much fun with this, but Robbie can’t even muster the scowl her tone deserves. His smile keeps breaking through.
“Not like that.”
“No shame in a little holiday romance.”
He shakes his head. “No, I mean— It’s more than a holiday romance.”
“Is it now?” Her grin widens.

Robbie’s incinerated cheese pasta-bake!
We’ve already explored Lewis’s domestic challenges, but can we discuss Dr. Laura’s face here? I think the last time she looked this horrified she was being buried alive.
