hi! imagine reader trying to escape leroux erik and running into him in the catacombs 🤭 he's just as shocked to see them as they are to see him
obsession, grabbing, dark behaviour, not romantic but horror, spoilers
I'm going off of the part of the novel where Leroux describes a mermaid that he has in the water around his house or something. I think it's the one that drowned Philippe.
Encountering Erik in the Catacombs
From the wording/context I’m imagining that the Phantom has kidnapped you and is secluding you in his underground home
To escape this far you would need to be stubbornly determined
He left you at his home to run some errands, so the boat would not be at your disposal to bring you across the lake
Swimming it was then
When he had first kidnapped you, you swear that you saw a dark figure lurking at the bottom of the lake
And if you recall, he had mentioned something of a mermaid in his lake
Believing in such fairy tales as mermaids is a tall order, but from such an unusual man, you might actually believe the impossible
Whatever you faced in that murky lake, it would be better than staying confined here for a second longer
So you strip down to your undergarments and ease your way into the cold water
The water chills your skin and soddens your clothes
An uncomfortable feeling, no doubt, but nothing in comparison to the peril you soon face
Suddenly a hand grasps your ankle, pulling you down into the depths
You lash against the iron grip, kicking your feet as your life depends on it
Sinking down, you're forced to swallow in mouthfuls of lake water
I'm going to die here, at the bottom of a lake, all alone
But with a particularly strong kick, you manage to dislodge the offending hand and swim frantically to the other side of the lake
Needless to say, you were now thoroughly disturbed, and you weren't sure what was more terrifying
The fact that what you felt was certainly a human hand grabbing at you
Or the fact that Erik had such...creatures, real and in the flesh
He had certainly was a man for tricks and illusions, but this was the first scrape of real danger and potential lethality you had encountered in his traps
Nonetheless, there is no way you're going back now--not with that...thing...lurking at the bottom
And the adrenaline coursing through you propels you into the unkown
You can't go back
You can't
Sopping wet and wandering into the endless dark caverns, with no way of knowing what progress (or lack thereof) was not your ideal scenario, yet still it was progress nonetheless
The chill seeps from the uninviting cavern walls to your bones, and all you can manage to do is shiver profusely while you navigate aimlessly through the terrain
I'd like to think that, in a more horror/supernatural interpretation, the Phantom has some developed supernatural connection with the darkness
He wouldn't need to use a torch to navigate through his labryinth if he really didn't want to
In such a dark place, many metres beneath the chaotic upper floor of the opera house, every little sound can be heard through the quiet expanse
So when you hear the faint rustle of a cloak, the coldth in your skin seeps to your blood and you feel ice chill your veins through all extremities
You feel the phantom's intense eyes, filled with anger, before he confirms his presence
Thin, skeletal hands seize your wrists and your captor makes an angry, hissing sound
A snake about to strike its prey
Your captor's voice is laced with faux amusement, sardonic, as if prodding you into testing him
"Going somewhere?"
His laugh is derisive, joyless, covering a barely contained rage and hurt
"I believe, my dear, we should be heading back,"
His piercing eyes freeze your muscles, and you feel you can't move no matter how much your inner voice scream to
"We have much to discuss, and you have much to explain."

In Our Midst
Halloween OneShot 2022
This year for Halloween, I ran a game of D&D as a hidden roles game. Each player did their character creation with me privately, with the possibility that any other player character could be the secret monster that wants to continue killing innocents in secret.
The town of Grimsby has been under the thumb of a secret serial killer for over a decade now. Every year, at least one person dies, and any attempts to find the killer out have resulted in more deaths. In recent months, the killings have escalated tenfold, and Grimsby is under attack by supernatural nightmares and horrible monsters. Is this still the same killer? Or has this sad town attracted a new threat? This is the cause of a town meeting of concerned parties trying to solve the mystery at the town tavern.
The town sheriff, a halfling named Merric, begins the meeting by re-explaining the situation. His stance is that it is all the same monster, but a human Nun named Nia thinks otherwise. The Sheriff then has everyone present introduce themselves, since not all attendees are permanent residents of the village. In addition to the Nun Nia, and the Farmhand Janiel, there are 5 (player character) concerned strangers at the meeting.
Delightful Arno: human court jester working at a circus in town (Barbarian)
Ket Moon: tiefling local bachelor who came into wealth a year prior (Sorceror/Warlock)
Dante Guido Shortfoot: halfling diviner who was just passing through (Wizard)
Dreali Watson: human self professed investigator (Bard)
Lady Antoinette Leroux: human noblewoman who's lived here her whole adult life (Warlock)
Each has secrets they'd rather keep from the others (players even kept their classes from each other), but right now, the safety of the town and themselves is their united goal.
While they're having this meeting, the Sheriff is swallowed up by an aberration bursting from the floor. The group fight off a trio of Gibbering Mouthers, and go to where Merric fell, to find just bones. Very on edge, those remaining leave the tavern to explore the town centre for clues.
Their first point of call is the neighbourhood of Grimsby's oldest families, suspecting foul play by those in power. However the street going towards this area is blocked by a cloud of magical darkness and a colossal statue of a sheep. Various attempts to get past this blockade are unsuccessful, as it seems some magical will does not want them to go that way. They suspiciously retreat and instead head towards the farm, where the town keeps real sheep. A voice in the heads taunts their misfortune.
On the way there, the farmhand Janiel warns them of a monster that has taken up residence near the farm. The owner of the farm was killed by this monstrosity, and his wife was forced to flee town. Wary of this sudden urgency from Janiel, Dante reads his mind, finding that Janiel was for a time comforting the farmer's wife and they developed a intimate relationship, and when she suspected Janiel killed the farmer for his own benefit, he killed her.
Dante throws this information out into the open and the party is split over what to do, and while they argue what to do, a voice in their head taunts them to tear each other apart. They resist, and in the end decide to proceed carefully. But this plan is thwarted when a nobleman and his guard cries out across the field at Dreali, referring to him as Frederik. He says Frederik tricked his wife out of a family heirloom and he must see justice. And then the noise, which had been attracting sheep, gains the attention of a hulking horse-like monster.
The horse monster instantly slays the nobleman and his guard, and rushes toward the party. The sheep huddle in close, and strange glowing eyes push through their wool, shooting beams that cause sleep. The horse monster absorbs the souls of those it slays, and then lashes out with a destructive burst of dark energy. Half the party are instantly unconscious, including Janiel. Nia heals up one of the fallen and attempts to run, but is cut down by the monster. Dreali/Frederik heals the others, and the party scatters, hoping to escape the monsters attention.
Lady Leroux attempts to escape into the city streets, but Dreali and Arno call her out on her way out. She promises she just needs a moment of privacy. Ket is nowhere to be seen, but soon a voice in their heads, different to the previous, announcing itself as Ket, asks the party to come to his property, promising a safe place to rest up and recuperate. Although they are wary, they travel around the edge of the farm towards Ket's manor. Just outside of the manor, a door to a magnificent manor lay open, and Ket welcomes them in. He explains that his real manor has been possessed by the real monster causing all of this misfortune, and if the others come help him, they can put an end to the horrors.
They enter the mansion, see another of the strange sheep, and a new voice in the heads telling them to be careful and not approach the stairs. A fight breaks out, as eye stalks come out of the walls, a rug on the floor comes to life, and the rails of the staircase whip around like tentacles. A hard fight is fought, and underneath where the rug was, is a large circular hole going deep underground.
The new voice reveals to the party that the mansion is the creation of a demon who made a deal with Ket. Ket wanted the wealth and means to make friends and host parties, and the demon, a big fan of this wish, granted it, with the small caveat that it would drain the energy of party guests while they stay. It never kills people, just gives them a huge hangover. The demon then tells the party that the real root of this town's problems is a Beholder. It's lair is beneath Grimsby and one entrance is right here in front of them.
With the demon's magical assistance, they descend into the caverns below. What proceeds is a twisting series of slippery tunnels, traps, ghastly eyes watching them, and... sheep. In several places on the floors, they find playing cards. They are from the deck of many things. One goes in their favour. Another absorbs Dreali into a void. He disappears.
At the end of the tunnels, they come to a wall with a giant eye. Dante, through his divinations, finds that this is where something must be paid, to open the way to the Beholder. Dante chooses this time to reveal he knows who the long time killer of Grimsby is. It is Antoinette Leroux. She is relieved to drop her facade. Her real name is Arabella, and she is a vampire who was turned against her will. Arabella usually only kills for sustenance, but anyone who threatens to reveal her are silenced.
The voice in the head returns, it tells them to kill the vampire. They fall for its taunts. A scrappy fight proceeds where Arabella tires to fight and then escape, but she is outnumbered, and slew.
They offer up her body to the Beholder's door, and the magical cards they find. Dreali is released from the void. As they door falls away, they come face to face with the Beholder, and some sheep, which the party now understand they functioned as the eyes and ears of the Beholder. The final battle is very difficult, but it does not go for long. Powerful attacks from all sides batter the Beholder, and powerful beams fly from all of its eyes to the party as they scatter around the room. Arno is killed.
But the three remaining, Dante, Ket, and Dreali (who's real name is Floyd) kill the Beholder. And the nightmare it has weaved is ended. Ket invites his two new friends to a party at his place.

Lilith
Embrace the drama of life with this Babylonian girl's name. Lilith, meaning "belonging to the night," comes from the Akkadian word lilîtu, the feminine form of a word meaning "demon" or "spirit." In Mesopotamian and Jewish mythology, Lilith was the first wife of Adam who was ultimately banished from the Garden of Eden for her disobediance. The name has since appeared in all manner of books, films, TV shows, and videogames, from Supernatural to The Mortal Instruments, and is synonymous with characters who will go above and beyond to achieve their own goals—although, more often than not, she’s not on the heroes' side. With this name, you can give baby a powerful figure to look up to, someone who doesn't let anything hold her back. I have fallen in love with this mesh so I was trying to figure out what I could make next with it and decided we need a gothic centaur. She's white with black wings on her legs. She has a black and red with gold trim. She is wearing a corset top that is black and gold trim with red accents on it. She has wrist braclet with a red rubies, along with armbracelet with a wrist bracelet that has a matching ruby stone. She is wearing red and black moon and stars earrings. A red and black moon chocker necklace adorns her neck. She has her hair up in pigtails in a ball. Don't forget to download her meshes or she won't show up correctly.

So, as some others have mentioned, it was something Andrew Lloyd Webber changed to give more I would say “plausible deniability” to how Bouquet died. In the play, there’s dramatic irony that we see the Phantom kill him, but the other characters don’t see it. They have assumptions as to how Bouquet died, but it is possible (based on what they know of him) that Bouquet could have died accidentally. Still a freaking scary occurrence, but until the chandelier actually drops there’s some unsettling mystery surrounding what’s actually going on that we (and Christine to a greater or lesser extent) understand. In a play, it’s easy to use dramatic irony to create suspense and also create sympathy. Bouquet in the play is easy to dislike. He’s crass. He’s annoying. He’s mean. He’s gross. We don’t feel over much sympathy for him when he dies. We might feel fear. We might feel tension. We might feel suspense. But, if anything, he’s a dick, and he’s cruel in language and action to the Phantom and the dancers respectively. So, as much as it builds suspense, it doesn’t hurt our feelings of sympathy for the Phantom AND it increases our feelings of sympathy and support of Christine because she KNOWS what’s going on even if no one believes her. The play (as others mentioned) leans more into the genre of traditional romance than Gothic romance and mystery. As such, all three romantic love interests (Raoul, the Phantom, and Christine) have to be likable, sympathetic, and interesting. So, there has to be a decent number of changes made to the story in order to ensure the audience feels invested in the love triangle while not losing all of the plot of the original story.
Now, I personally think Leroux does a beautiful job making Erik a sympathetic character in the novel. BUT, the way he does that is VERY different than how Lloyd Webber does it. And, that is in part due to medium and genre.
The novel is truly more of a mystery story than a romance (as other folks have mentioned). Weird things happen and it’s up to us as readers to deduce Sherlock Holmes style what the F is happening in that haunted theater. So, we get small details about folks showing up dead or things going wrong. It’s a different kind of suspense that’s being built because it’s a different medium of storytelling and a different genre. Leroux has to convince us, not that the Phantom is sympathetic, but instead that something is WRONG with this theater. He’s trying to convince us that these “accidents” are NOT accidents without outright telling us that. So, he has to make Bouquet “sober, and steady” because that makes us as readers start to ask questions.
So, the question then becomes how come we don’t hate Erik in the novel?
What it comes down to is that Erik, through his speech and mannerisms, is shown to be someone to be pitied. Through his life experience, and due to human cruelty, he turns into something less than human. He loses his humanity. Though, through Christine, he regains it. What starts as a mystery story becomes a profound commentary on the nature of the need for human love, compassion, and tenderness. It’s like that robot monkey experiment before it even happened! We as human beings know instinctively that without the love of our parents or any kind of kindness it is extraordinarily difficult, if not almost impossible, to learn how to interact with others. Erik lashes out and attacks people when his ability to live and stay alive is threatened OR that he perceives that his space/ ability to live is being threatened. He has extraordinarily complex emotions but they’re childlike, uncontrolled, and volatile. In part, this is because he had no one to teach him emotional regulation and as Lloyd Webber summarizes in “Down Once More” Erik has been “hounded down by everyone, no compassion anywhere.” This is very true of what we learn from him in the novel. Erik is a sympathetic character, but he is also clearly a murder (as he is in Lloyd Webber’s musical as well.)
So, TLDR: Boquet’s death needs to serve the type of narrative (Romantic Musical vs Gothic Romance/Mystery) and needs to allow Erik to remain sympathetic to the reader. Webber and Leroux do that differently (but successfully) based on the genre.
Phantom of the opera conossieurs of Tumblr, I need your help.
I begun reading the original Leroux novel today (Collins classics edition) and I noticed that in no way does the book mention that Buquet was a drunk creepy man like he is portrayed in some adaptations. On the contrary, he is described as, and I quote "a serious, sober, steady man".
Where did that interpretation of Joseph Buquet come from? was it changed to better accommodate the reason for his murder?

Would you write some yandere headcanons for the 1990’s Charles dance phantom?.
Charles Dance Phantom Headcanons
You'll have to pardon me, since this is the only other adaptation I've seen besides the book and musical. We don't talk about the movie. It's been over 4 years since I've seen this though I think....so I hardly remember anything. I did rewatch clips and read the plot to try my best.
Naturally, there will be spoilers
Charles Dance's Phantom has a much more practical twist on his character--moreso than even the original
By this, I mean to say that we see his less glorious and cinematic aspects of his life: his musings, his informal chats with Carriere, his sarcastic quips about Carlotta's singing
Sarcasm and his stone-faced sense of humour are other defining aspects of this Erik
I do believe that his interest in you would spark most probably from singing
Upon hearing your voice seep through the thin floorboards of the opera house, your beautiful colour and technique entice him enough to venture above the bowels of the Palais Garnier...
He falls in love with you the moment he can clearly hear your voice
The Phantom stalks you, trying to find an opportunity to catch you on your own
He wishes to convince you into accepting him as your teacher
You have so much potential already, and under his tutelage? He believes you will have the most coveted voice in all of France
This rendition of the Phantom has the most genuine and pure-hearted intentions in his romantic feelings to you
Unlike the book where kidnap would be inevitable, the mini-series Phantom would only resort to abducting you only if he believed it to be best for your own safety and wellbeing
Perhaps having a confidante in Carriere, and his fatherly guidance, helps to tame Erik's more sinister urges
(I suppose you could argue that Leroux's Phantom had the Persian as his friend, but their relationship was undoubtedly testy at best)
Do not be deceived though this version of the Phantom will still willingly engage in many underhanded deeds if need be
Ideally without your knowledge
However, should you become wary and try to distance yourself from him for any reason, he will act increasingly irrationally
The Phantom will lash out, acting violently and abducting you against your wishes
However, if you show him love and compassion, he becomes malleable to your demands, and his grip on you loosens
You could tame him with your love such that he would be absolutely pliant to you
The only thing he wishes from you is to love him, despite his disfigured face, as much as he loves you
I hope this was at least somewhat accurate.
