MOVIE QUOTE OF THE DAY:
“If she was here I'd probably be just as crazy now as I was then in about 5 minutes. Ain't that ridiculous? . . . Naw, it ain't really. 'Cause being crazy about a woman like her is always the right thing to do. Being an old decrepit bag of bones, that's what's ridiculous. Gettin' old.”

Picked this up on holiday, my first McMurtry novel. Amazing cover photograph.
It’s a glimpse into Texas ranch life in the 1950s and a coming of age story. The writing was good in a workmanlike way, but I didn’t feel much poetry to it, and it lacked a sense of completeness in story telling.

I’ve always believed that Westerns aren’t really for me. Until I read Nunslinger by Stark Holburn and The Sisters Brothers by Patrick deWitt which gave me a whole new appreciation for the genre. Lonesome Dove looked intimidating in terms of length but thanks to some wonderful bookstagram friends, it was quite the wild ride and such a great adventure story. Hey, it won a Pulitzer Prize for a good reason!⁣ ⁣ It follows the inhabitants of a dusty little Texas town called Lonesome Dove as a group of men (and one incredibly determined woman) set out on the journey of a lifetime to see if there is a better life for them all miles away from the monotony of their everyday existence. ⁣ ⁣ This novel is filled with everything you could want from a tome just under 1000 pages long. Epic in scope, in what it chooses to deliver and in how the narrative plays out for our unique and memorable set of characters, Lonesome Dove is nothing short of breathtaking. ⁣ ⁣ Furthermore, I love that I went into this story with no prior knowledge of the events that occur and very little expectations. It made the journey all the sweeter and the surprises even more exciting when they come. This is an adventure story but it’s also much more than that. We have love, death, betrayal and those cliffhanger moments where anything could (and does) happen. ⁣ ⁣ The only thing that didn’t sit quite right with me was the casual racism and the way certain characters were treated based on their ethnicity (Native American and Mexican) and although you might say it’s a book “of its time,” I just wanted to put it out there as it did make me uncomfortable. ⁣ ⁣ I am keen to read the rest of the books in the series though. Thanks to Steve, Celeste and Rich amongst many others for making this long journey with me! ⁣ ⁣Four solid stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 ⁣ ⁣ ⁣#bookstagram #scottishbookstagrammer #readingwithfriends📚 #buddyreadobsession #lonesomedove #larrymcmurtry #epicnovels #westernnovels #recommendedreads👍 #seriesiwanttoread #booksandplantstagram #reviewingonline ⁣ https://www.instagram.com/p/CledFaVLV8G/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry 5 stars #9 of 2022 . The dull brutality of the American frontier in the dying days of the Wild West, is captured so beautifully in McMurtry’s sprawling novel. Stretching from the little town of Lonesome Dove on the Mexican border all the way north to Canada, the novel follows a group of cowboys herding cattle amidst feelings of loneliness, hopelessness and isolation which appears so often it almost becomes a character in its own right. The human characters themselves are so richly detailed and described, you can see the sweat upon their brow and feel the callouses upon their hands. Truly a remarkable novel that, while slow on the uptake, eventually buries itself in your mind like a Mesquite thorn into a thumb. . #lonesomedove #larrymcmurtry #minimonotonebookclub #booksivereadin2022 #booksivedrawnin2022 #booksreillustrated #bookstagram #houlart #houl (at Lonesome Dove Ranch) https://www.instagram.com/p/CeN7_rWB5Jk/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Well I finished Lonesome Dove this week, and I cannot begin to express how much I loved it. The characters, the story, I loved everything about it. It's also really cool reading an epic tale that takes place, at least for a good chunk of the book, in Texas, so that you really know the landscape, and understand how much distance was crossed. I would say I'm a little biased because I love westerns, but I think this book transcends genre. It's just wonderful, and there's nothing more to say. Now that I've finished that, I'm doing a re-listen (audible) of my favorite book The Name of The Wind, as well as reading The Soil Will Save Us. Extremely informative book about sustainable farming, and replenishing our soil. I'm having to read bits at a time because I am terrible at reading nonfiction because my brain starts to wander, even if I'm really interested in the information. Also, here is my new (to me) book haul from Half Price. The sequel to Lonesome Dove, Watership Down which I've always wanted to read, The Man Who Would Be King, which is one of my favorite movies/stories of all time but I've never gotten to read, and Elmer Gantry, which I didn't even know was originally a book! But I grew up with and loved the movie. I know most of you won't read this, cause why would you? But I love books, and I felt like posting about what I'm reading for once. 💙📙📖💙 #lonesomedove #larrymcmurtry #texas #western #watershipdown #themanwhowouldbeking #thenameofthewind #elmergantry #thesoilwillsaveus #books #reading #goreadabook https://www.instagram.com/p/CCRTXBintvu_tfmWUa0P4VzY-9y3S54daXAQOk0/?igshid=1k1sodq3aippp

Some of the best dialogue I've ever read. Neat, crisp, upright and heavy with meaning, virtually every word, a gem.
