Thoughts : How High (2001)

As a lifelong hip-hop fan, certain rappers will always get my attention when they show up in the realm of film.  Redman and Method Man had already both reached individual legend status on my radar long before they ever paired up musically, and once that pairing occurred, it seemed we’d reached a maximum connection.  Then, something wonderful happened, and that something wonderful was the instant 2001 classic How High. 

Silas (Method Man) is a young man blessed with a gift for botany, including the growing and cultivation of marijuana plants.  Jamal (Redman) is the last chance in the King family to make Mamma King (Ana Maria Horsford) proud by having a college graduate among her children.  Silas and Jamal must both past the THCs in order to gain admission to college.  Ivory (Chuck Deezy), a close friend to Silas (and one who believes that he could succeed in a university environment), dies in a freak accident shortly after professing he will do whatever it takes to make sure Silas succeeds.  Silas, as a testament to their friendship, includes Ivory’s ashes in a plant, and on the day of the THCs, happens to meet Jamal just as the Ivory is about to be smoked.  Much to the surprise and shock of Silas and Jamal, the ghost of Ivory appears to them, promising to help them ace all tests.  Their perfect scores on the THCs get them into Harvard, much to the joy of Chancellor Phil Huntley (Fred Willard), and to the utter dismay of Dean Carl Cain (Obba Babatunde), a product of a similar environment that produced Silas and Jamal who is trying to distance himself from that ‘element’.  As the two hit campus, with Jamal’s sidekick I Need Money (Al Shearer, fka Hits from the Streets) in tow, they aim to turn everything upside down while they party, get high, and meet women like budding archaeologist Lauren (Lark Voorhies) or Jamie (Essence Atkins), the daughter of the Vice President (Jeffrey Jones).  As the hi-jinx ensue, staff and students alike are forced to either hop on for the ride, or find themselves left in the wake of it all.

The multiple levels of humor that this film operates on reach surprising depths for what, on the outset, appears to be a simple premise begging for simple execution.  The jokes that play range the gamut from base-level to absurd, stoner to grotesque, classic bits to updated spins on classic bits, and even some good old-fashioned line reads that stay in your head long after the movie completes its run.  I imagine that a script sat on a shelf somewhere for ages that mixed elements of Animal House with Weird Science, and nobody knew that all it needed to fly was new life inserted into it by way of casting and what the leads can bring to the table that isn’t found on the page.

The way that the film takes tropes of college movies, stoner movies and hip hop movies, mixes them all together, and still manages to feel balanced is quite the achievement, especially considering that many members of the cast, if not self-disciplined, could run a project like this clear off the rails.  All parties involved, however, brought their A-game, it seems, and nobody put on airs or adjusted their style in anticipation of what anyone else was doing.  The cross pollination of all these elements really and truly is the element that grounds the film, and allows laughs across the board, despite your background or your pre-conceived notions.

The chemistry between Meth and Red is so dynamic that it exceeds musical collaboration... these two connect like The Odd Couple, Abbott & Costello, Cheech & Chong, or any other long list of dynamic comedy duos that can be rattled off, but with a refreshing edge and perspective not present in the previous long line of duos.  Obba Babbatunde straddles the line between dignity and ridiculousness perfectly.  Fred Willard, Anna Maria Horsford and Mike Epps deliver the goods in step with what we’ve come to expect from their consistent history of performances.  T.J. Thyne is wonderfully uptight, which makes his eventual coming undone at the hands of Ivory (the plant) play largely.  Chuck Deezy and his high energy fit wonderfully for Ivory, who turns in one of the most upbeat ghost portrayals short of Casper.  Hector Elizondo plays against type so comically that it makes him stand out, even in limited appearances.  Chris Elwood embraces his role of jerk to the maximum, almost to an over-the-top level, as protagonist to both leads.  Al Shearer turns in an offbeat, pitch perfect silent performance as I Need Money.  Brief appearances from Tracy Morgan (including one of my favorite random scenes ever when he appears in Field of Dreams), Garrett Morris, Judah Friedlander, Spalding Gray, Essence Atkins, Jeffrey Jones, Trieu Tran, Justin Urich and Cypress Hill round things out. 

This film will probably always fall in the category of cult classic at best, and rap film at worst.  Believe me, however... this film is a bonafide gem, and definitely worth your time if you’ve not seen it previously.

While “How to Be a Player” wasn’t a HUGE success, it is regarded as one of the 90s most memorable films, while movie critics praised the comedic timing & Bellamy’s performance. The depiction of a player in this film is 100% accurately portrayed. Dray says it best throughout the movie: “A player never gets busted"... We say: Never Say Never 😏.
