Second home : a 3BHK residential project in Mumbai
Being a weekend home, the theme is kept contemporary, modern with clean lines, minimal design elements, use of a selective palette of materials and colours. A beautiful play of light and shadow is seen throughout the house at different times of the day. Each room is designed with its own characteristic, yet the complete look of the house is homogeneous.
Tumblr media
A narrow passage which leads to the living room on entering the house acts as a memory lane with family photos on its wall.

The living room is designed with rich suede fabrics, marble table tops, minimal furniture & neutral tones. We focused on how to integrate the large piece of furniture to maintain a sense of spaciousness. The contemporary sofa design coupled with the accents in decor, polished dark wood side table and Spanish brown full height curtains, bring the whole room together. In contrast to the neutral sofa, this bright saturated blue chair is modern, elegant, and inviting.
Adding some glamour to the space requires the prominence of a solid colour, and what better shade than a brown wallpaper with tasteful curios to pull it off! For bigger impact and more room for natural light, walls, flooring & ceiling have been kept muted. A combination of contemporary design and craftsmanship is this beautiful customized dining set made of Marble & faux leather with a pinch of gold.

Adding a pop of orange and black colour in the background in an otherwise very muted beige coloured dining area makes it stand out subtly. Living room is blessed with window openings on two opposite walls allowing cross ventilation and a beautiful, uncluttered, clean view on one side.
Kids bedroom
For the kids room, the client wanted design scheme which was gender neutral. Naturally, the decision to use white, yellow & wood was a given. On entering the kids room, the black & white doodled wallpaper covers the wall but it’s the intense yellow coloured headboard which catches the sight. The pops of yellow have been used in small proportions as its bright, energizing & gender blind. Besides the headboard is the window seating which is the perfect place to curl up with a good book or hangout with friends. To add some fun to the space, a height measuring ruler has been added on the toilet door & kids love standing next to it to see how tall they are !
Master bedroom
The shade of the space is calm, with dusty rose pink dominant suede fabric accents; the combination of both perfectly poised & gentle deviance. The long dusty taupe cushioned headboard gives a grand feeling to the space. Design of the furniture has been kept minimal with clear straight lines. A floating dressing table with a large circular mirror at centre creates the visual effect of a larger and luminous room. Snazzy accent chair adds glamour quotient to the otherwise subtle space.
Yoga Room / Guest room
First off, we designed an open but thematically zoned space for the owner's favourite home routine i.e. yoga. Therefore we’ve used natural materials like wooden flooring, khadi fabric headboard, marble table tops, bamboo lights & wooden louvers which gel seamlessly & bring harmony & uniqueness to the space. Walnut flooring runs seamlessly throughout room, meeting the large window frames, made of wooden panelling, harmoniously bridging the transition to the outdoors. Warmth enters the space via the sunlight cascading in from expansive windows, blending inside with outside. Wooden louvres filter out incoming light while assuring visual privacy.

The edges of ceiling are curved which blurs the lines of the space, thereby making the space look bigger. In later stage of execution, client requested a wardrobe, which was met by having a customised open wardrobe without compromising on the spaciousness of the room. The widow seat blends into the background & provides a cosy spot when the occupant just feels like hanging out.

Malaika’s Simple but Elegant Living Room Will Make You Feel Envy
Malaika Arora, the renowned Bollywood diva has shared a sneak peek of her opulent house on Thursday on her Instagram Stories. She posted a photo of her living room and balcony taken during 'magic hour.'
She prefers a minimal living and is a person who derives happiness out of it. Her modest but beautiful home overlooks the blue waves of the Arabian Sea and serves as a haven for her after a long day at the work.
Her living room’s spark
The living area is connected to a lovely sunny balcony that lets in plenty of light, making the space seem tranquil and positive. It's pleasant and cosy, thanks to two comfortable couches in different colours separated by a basic and classy-looking tea table. The exotic flower vases that can be seen on the table give off the ideal ambiance. She captioned the photo, "Magic hour light."
Her living room is decorated with a beige couch that serves as the focal point. This soothing color contributes to the comfortable atmosphere. The reflection of the chandelier across the room is reflected in a mirrored wall-piece behind her sofa, adding to the elegance of the area.
Malaika is an active user of social media and frequently posts photos of her opulent house. She previously shared a few photos of her living area in which she can be seen posing for photos. The diva can be seen making some gorgeous postures in an all-white ensemble while sitting on her couch.
She had her hair down and wore a white shirt dress with white boots. “Look to the left, to the right, Centre.... Just captures the light," she said in the caption, adding that the photos were taken by her sister, Amrita Arora.

An Apartment Renovation– Part Two!
Early last year I wrote a story about Color Outside The Lines blogger and interior designer Artie Vanderpool’s newly renovated apartment.   Fresh from a break-up, Artie had moved to several different apartments, until he finally found one that he thought might be good enough to put down some roots – AND one he could decorate to his heart’s content.  After living in an older, vintage house with dark moldings – Artie craved light and bright.   His newest place was all this,  plus large and airy, and after a rough start, he was ready to share his place with the world.
Originally, the apartment had white walls and a sea of beige wall to wall carpeting.   What you can’t see here is that it also had lots of windows to let in the bright sun.
But the carpet had to go and so did the light fixtures and mini blinds – it was all too boring for Artie’s chic aesthetic.
Artie’s manager gave him permission to make these changes, but he probably would have rescinded if he had seen what the apartment looked like during the reno process!!
Before he moved in, Artie had all the boring carpet pulled up with plans to put down wood floor tiles.  Except, decades of carpet glued down to concrete doesn’t make a pretty picture.   Artie spent nights cleaning up the concrete in order to install the tiles.
But they wouldn’t adhere to the concrete.  He almost gave up and put the carpet back down…but instead, Artie had a brainstorm…
He painted the concrete white!
And then decided he absolutely hated all the white.
Except, now that the floor was tacky from the paint, he tried to install the wood tiles again, and miraculously – they finally stuck!
It’s not actually a real wood floor, but it looks exactly like one.
And here is the new dining room with his newly installed wood floor, chandelier, and gallery wall.   He also installed dimmers on strategic lights such as the dining room and hallway.
He added curtains, textured shades and lots of accessories and the apartment looked fabulous!
Here is the living room with the tufted sofa and chinoiserie cabinet.  More art work and a layered rug over seagrass give the apartment a real luxe feel.
The view from the dining room, with two slipcovered stools.
And in Artie’s bedroom – what he really didn’t want you to see, is that he never pulled up the carpet in the bedroom.   This detail was overlooked in the original story.
Artie had bought this four poster bed online and when it arrived, he discovered it was a bit out of proportion and he had to remove the top canopy.  The bed was just too short, as you can see in this photograph.
Since Artie was never really happy with the bed (of course not!) nor the bedroom in general (of course not!) a MAJOR change was in the works (of course!)
Besides the changes in the bedroom, there also was his media room, which he NEVER told me he even had!  Actually, the apartment has two bedrooms and the second one was turned into a cozy TV room.
Along with those two new projects, there was his kitchen.  He totally redid the tiny apartment kitchen over two weekends and a few nights.  It is amazing.
Ready?
The Living Room:
There have been a only few changes in the living room since the first story.    Artie’s favorite pieces include his pair of Savonarola chairs with their custom black slipcovers and the chinoiserie chest, which is the focal point of the room.    The Kravet sofa has a Pindler and Pindler velvet cushion cover with a Samuel & Sons jute chevron trim to help protect the cream sofa against his two puppies.
In the corner, Artie added an old concrete urn.   He bought the urn for his dining room table, but it was too heavy, the plant is perfect for it.
The new urn and more plaster pieces.
On this side, he added a new brass lamp – and a fancy-pants Hermes blanket is peeking out!!   The chair is from Pottery Barn, but has been discontinued and the brass chest is from Ken Fulk.
                The Dining Room:
In the dining room, there’s a new side chair and a new friend – the bust on the chest.
The cane and leather chair was a steal – $40 at a NYC thrift shop.   Plus the $200 he paid to ship it home!!
His new room-mate is Mr. Nathaniel Hawthorne.  At least he is quiet and doesn’t have an opinion about painting over dark molding.  And he likes to drink, so Artie keeps the bourbon close by.
The Hickory Chair table got a new urn and orchid.
And the very latest tablescape – new blue & white and a collection of antique cross bottles which Artie creates and sells HERE.
The  Kitchen:
Before:  The kitchen is just a regular apartment kitchen.  Nothing too grand, but nice and clean with new cabinets.
How to make this plain area look more “Artie?”
To turn it into his own,  first Artie took down the upper cabinets.  Yes.  He did that himself.  Next, he added shelves for dishes and glasses.  Then, he made a linen skirt to use instead of lower cabinet doors.
The new look:  Artie made a fabric shade for the window and bought a new glass pendant to dress up the kitchen.  A lamp and candlelight add mood.
Artie added open white shelves instead of closed cabinets which makes the kitchen look so special.  And,  I love the linen skirts instead of lower cabinet doors!
Love the oil painting.    I am crazy over the changes!!!  The kitchen looks so great compared to what it looked like before!!
Hard to believe this is the same space – just a few days later!
Artie added a rug to tone down the vinyl flooring but who notices the floor when the shelves are so cute?!?
The brass stool in the hallway is from Target, believe it or not!  The oil painting on the top is by Ted Ellis of Ted Ellis Fine Art and is one that Artie treasures.
One more view!
The Media Room:
The Media Room had two windows and more boring carpet.  For a few months, Artie just kept the door closed.    Then, inspired by a photo of an extra long day bed…
he ripped up the carpet, installed the wood tile floor and created a sofa/day bed:
One long daybed becomes a slip covered sofa.  Artie added three sconces from Lowes for reading light.
I love the one gilt frame mixed amongst the black framed pieces of art.
Artie said he took a few months to decide what to do with this room.  He knew he needed a  space for guests to sleep in and he wanted a spot to watch TV.  He designed the day bed with a 10” memory foam mattress and stiff back cushions make it feel like a sofa.
Art work hangs on the walls.  Love the two wicker chairs.  You know what?  I think the Hermes blanket would look really good in here, Artie!!  Maybe you should move it here?
Art is from Stellers Gallery in Jacksonville HERE.
Seagrass rug layered over the floor and Thomasville leather ottoman doubles as a coffee table.
IDEA:   Artie switched out the legs and added these brass caster ones, which really is an upgrade and a great idea!!!  The caster legs look so much nicer!!!
The custom made sofa is 10' long and 36" wide and is slipped in a white cotton denim.
Pindler & Pindler mohair and silk velvet pillows.
The throws are so inexpensive, Artie bought 8!  HERE  They come in different colors, too.
Curtains with fabric shades are lined with textured shades – to make it all cozy and warm.
IDEA:  Notice the skirted table the flatscreen is on – it is really hiding the dogs bed that is underneath the skirt!!
BTW – Artie made the curtains, shades AND the skirt!!
Plaster side tables and garden seats do double duty.
The wicker chairs are old – from Williams Sonoma.
A very similar chair is available at Wayfair HERE.
I love a wicker chair in a room – it’s a great accent and adds texture and warmth and a touch of individuality.
So sweet – Louna’s watching TV!!!
This is such a cozy and warm room to read and watch TV in.
Great job Artie!!   Now, go bring the Hermes blanket in here.  LOL.
The Bedroom:
The master bedroom was just the same as the rest:  more boring beige carpet and mini blinds.
Artie’s first bedroom décor was very nice – in blue stripes.  But he never cared for the bed.  So he sold it.
And then, he bought a lot, a LOT of brown and white striped fabric and….
Now the bedroom looks like this.  Amazing!!
First Artie got a new bed,  which is iron with a painted finish,  then he lined the walls with the brown and white fabric.  And next he added a striped rug over the seagrass over the wood floors that he had installed.
It’s just beyond fabulous!!  Seriously.   It’s beyond fabulous.
I’m so in love with this room!
At the left is a French bench with a slipcover and an oversized mirror.  At the windows are the white curtains and textured blinds.
The fabric is from Valdese Weavers, a mattress ticking with a brown ribbon used for trim.  Artie ended up using 35 yards!
Close up of the slipped French bench.  Notice the trim.  And notice the trim around the wall covering.  Perfect!
Even though Artie complains that the stripes aren’t straight in places, it looks perfect to me.  He said it was really hard to hang the fabric, but it was all worth it because this is his favorite room.   I agree.  It’s my favorite too!!!!!
Across from the bed is the chest flanked by two slipper chairs with striped fabric.
The two slipper chairs flank the chest.  The chairs are in a different striped fabric.
Another view.  Notice the trim at the ceiling.  So perfect!
The rug is from Safavieh.
Awwww.  Sweet Louna, the French Bulldog!!!
Parting shot.  Notice how Artie brought in some art work with orange tones to tie in with the blinds and the velvet tiger fabric.
Just perfect Artie.  Seriously – this is a dream come true apartment.  I’m sure he could be happy here for the next decade, but something tells me he probably will be moved out before the year is over!!!
To visit Artie’s blog and portfolio, go HERE.
Be sure to visit Artie’s Cross Bottle Shop  HERE.  He sells antique cross bottles, above,  AND he will custom make what you want in case something is sold out.  Just email him at:
to discuss his bottles!
More.
More.
And  more.
AND…
Christmas season is coming up and new design books are being released weekly.  Interior designer Victoria Hagan’s book Dream Spaces is one of the new ones and it’s so beautiful!!
Hagan’s book features 10 houses – and each has something in common…they are all second homes, vacation homes.   The book is large and luscious with beautiful photographs.
There is Victoria’s own house in Nantucket….
And this house is in Aspen.  Can you imagine waking up to these views of Ajax Mountain?????
And this Florida house.
To order Dream Spaces, just click on the book or HERE.
And I haven’t read this one yet.  I did read his wife, Joanna’s book and found it interesting and entertaining.  Now that the Gaines have announced they are retiring from HGTV (no!!!) – I’m afraid we won’t be seeing so much of the Gaines.  To order, click on the book or HERE.

Some people suggest that I've missed my calling, that I should be some type of interior designer. I like the idea - due to the fact that I could spend a fortune in Hobby Lobby (on wall art, alone) and that I have so many friends and family members that ask my for my decorating advice! Of course that is always flattering, but it's also something that I truly enjoy doing. Becoming a licensed interior designer takes a lots of time, a lot of money, and a degree - something that I don't yet have. So for now, I'll settle on redecorating my own home, anytime I get a wild hair. I know that most of you must be thinking "constantly redecorating you home takes a lot of money too", but it doesn't have to! No, I didn't go out and buy all new decor. I did a lot of moving things around and I put my DIY skills to use. Did you all forget that I was a "domestic goddess"? Haha!
I am a huge neutral palette lover, but dark neutrals have become too gloomy for me and that is mainly what my home's walls consist of. Every few years, I seem to get sick of the decor around me and need change - it is that year! One of my New Year's Resolutions was to brighten up our home. There is a certain style that I have always loved... think Urban Outfitters (but cheaper) mixed with a little rustic charm. This is the year that I am going to make that look happen, slowly but surely! I am sticking with the neutrals, but going lighter, and I still want a pop of color in each and every room - but not in the usual way. I want all of the color to derive from our family photos, living greenery, and our book, movie, and record covers! I want it to seem fresh, but homey.
Here we go, a little bit at a time! First, I am tackling our living room and our kitchen - both of which have dark brown walls. Before I started, there were dark browns everywhere - with turquoise as an accent color. Our wood floors and our living room sectional are both deep espresso, in color. I plan to lighten it up, by going light "greige" on the walls and lighter neutral shades of decor. For those of you who haven't heard of the new popular color, it's basically a mixture of grey and beige. Think driftwood! Typical, right? Yes, but I'm in love with it.
Things I Purchased (recently - for the redo):
Spray Paint - a DIYer's best friend. Usually I purchase spray paint from Home Depot (each can is around five dollars). Hobby Lobby sells spray paint, as well, and is sometimes cheaper on certain sale days. I purchased three different shades of tan and used them on my current decor: frames, wooden accent chairs, flower pots, sconces, etc. I chose to go with matte finishes, but there are glosses for those who like to shine. If you want a distressed look, have some sandpaper on hand and use it to scuff the edges and corners.
Fabric - Recovering cushions is one of the best (and cheapest) ways to refurbish and renew a piece of furniture. It's also super easy, as long as you have a staple gun! We have an antique piano that is the focal point of our living room. I bought one yard of fabric, for six dollars (with a printable 40% off coupon), at Hobby Lobby. The piano is also a dark espresso color, so I chose a creme based fabric with a tan trellis print.
Light Strands - After Christmas is always the best time to find great deals on all types of light strands! I picked up two strands, with large clear bulbs, at Walmart for seven dollars each. Another new trend that I've noticed is copper strands with the miniature LED lights attached - they give more lighting and the wire is completely unnoticeable. I found these, on sale for five dollars each, at Bed Bath & Beyond. I had my husband place a corner hook, in our ceiling, above his record player stand. I was able to wrap the miniature lights around the wires of the larger strand of bulbs, and then draped them beneath the corner.
Tumblr media
Wooden Stands - These were our two most expensive purchases, for our living room redo. We've had the same, cheap, vinyl television stand for about six years. Our actual television grew in size a few years ago, so we figured it was finally time to upgrade! It is simple, but real wood and sturdy - we ordered it, online, from Walmart. We purchased it, for $125 dollars, after Christmas and it was 25% off. The second piece of furniture that we purchased was a stand for my husband's record player. We sort of made our own! Target was having a storage sale, so we bought a 2-cube storage shelf that was similar to our new TV stand, in color. We also purchased two sets of wheels that we were able to attach (by drill) to the bottom of the shelf! So now my husband can easily move his record player, around the house, whenever we have company. In total, it cost us forty dollars to create.
Knobs/Pulls - This is actually something that I purchased a few years ago and just now put to use. Why it took this long, I'll never know! I've previously bought decorative knobs and pulls from Hobby Lobby, when they are 50% off. Individually, they are still pricey if you're trying to redo a whole set of kitchen cabinets. We found an entire set, at Home Depot, for around twenty dollars. I'm pretty positive that our previous knobs were from when our home was originally built, in the 1960's. They're still gorgeous, but rusted and some had broken apart. Our cabinets are a creme color, so we chose a very dark finish for the hardware - but that were also edged with a light copper finish (to coincide with my new copper mule mugs, that I've proudly displayed above our pub table).

Here comes the color! I have no knack for Herbology (for my "Potter Heads" out there), but have a serious love for plants. My husband is the one with the green thumb. Hopefully, I can keep these alive - but thank goodness that artificial plants these days look more realistic, just in case! We bought two groupings of succulents, at Home Depot. Both came in super cute pots and were only five dollars each. My husband picked out a Spider Plant and some Devil's Ivy, both are short in height and need little tending too. We also went with a taller, tree type houseplant (don't ask me the name - sadly, the tag got thrown away). Each of those cost $10-$12 dollars, each.
Now for the "Thrify" Goods:
Sconces & Frames - Two words (spray paint).
Wall Art - I love to move things around when I am redecorating! I am still looking to keep some color, when I begin to redecorate our bedroom. I moved all of our turquoise decor into our master bedroom - and brought all of the neutral decor out into the living room. I took everything off the walls and redesigned how I wanted each thing to be placed. I moved around some of our wall shelves and some larger window pane photo frames. I also brought out a white wire birdcage, that has a flat back and hangs on the wall, from our bedroom and put it in the living room.
Shelves - Another DIY favorite item, pallets. My husband works in the lawn care business, so pallets are abundant! Last spring, we painted and distressed a larger sized one. It was then placed above the piano - on it are photo frames, a large wooden/burlap "Y", candles, succulents, etc. We used another pallet and cut it into pieces, making two wall shelves to place record albums in. Super easy to paint and hang on walls! I added some burlap trim to give them some visible texture.

Baskets - I know that everyone has some type of basket laying around the house. I move them around and refill them, frequently! I had several, for Jude's changing table, when he was smaller. Now they are being used in random places, for different things. I wanted Jude to be able to have easy access to some of his favorite toys, in the living room - so in the baskets they go! Now they're easily hidden and the baskets are super cute. I also have a few wire baskets, , that were once used in my bathroom, placed under my TV stand to house books.
Curtains - We have an older house, with very large living room windows. I have the same type of curtains in our living room, our bedroom, and in our son's bedroom. They're sheer and simple, but each different lengths. I wanted floor length ones in our living room, so I simply switched our living room ones with the curtains from our son's room! Gave them a good washing and "ta-da".
Bench Seating - We initially bought a small 3-cube storage bench for our hallway, the space was so empty. I decided to bring the bench out into the living room, to create more seating and storage. I replaced it, in the hallway, with a small couch table that we were using in the living room (in between accent chairs).

Sometimes you can create some of the best looks, with stuff that you already have in your home - things may have eventually been thrown out or maybe you just want to de-clutter. That is what I have done, with our kitchen pub table. The copper mule mugs were a Christmas gift, from my Mom. Everything else on the table were things that I had used prior, for parties that we hosted, or items that I snatched off of the piano (trying to create space).
I'm a slow mover, when it comes to redecorating. I hate settling for a look - I want it to be perfect - but it doesn't have to be expensive to be perfect (or to even look expensive)! Pinterest is always a huge help, if you're looking for other decorating hacks. It is definitely my "go to", in the world of DIY decor.  Hopefully this blog has given you some tips too - I'll be posting more of my favorite decor dos, as I go!
