100 years ago... LtCmdr Rupert Gould best selling book 100 years ago, Royal Navy LtCmdr Rupert Gould (1890-1948) published his famous book " The Marine Chronometer " (preface December 1922 - 1923) but we didn't have to wait a century for a worthy reprint as in 2013 the ACC Antique Collectors' Club brought out their 365 pages version... and again in 2016. A truly amazing book with extra chapter full of great color photographs as both reprints almost sold out immediately. October 5th, 2023 will be the 75th anniversary of the passing of LtCmdr Rupert Gould, a Royal Navy officer who safed, cleaned and repaired John Harrison's Marine clocks, naming H1 to H5. FESTAL FAVOURS is a programme of performance art, sound installation, experimental printmaking and new writing curated by CLARE CARSWELL for the new CHARLBURY FESTIVAL.  

SATURDAY 10th - SUNDAY18th JUNE 2017.

Presenting two week-ends of residencies, installation and performance art by thirteen artists, it will introduce performance art to the local audience and will showcase new works made especially for Charlbury by major names as well as by younger artists.

The hardest part of determining longitude was figuring out how sailors could find their longitudinal coordinates at sea. There were a lot of methods proposed but adding a ship into the equation makes precision difficult. Learn about the Longitude Act of 1714 and how, even though this podcast loves astronomy, the astronomical method might not always be the best option.

Glossary

azimuth -  a section of the horizon measured between a fixed point and the vertical circle passing through the center of an object. See example in the link. 

equator - Earth’s zero line of latitude. It’s the place on Earth where the Sun is directly overhead at noon on the vernal and autumnal equinoxes.

kamal - an Arabic navigation tool consisting of a knotted string and a piece of wood. A navigator would tie a knot in the string and, by holding it in their teeth, sight the North Star along the top of the wooden piece and the horizon along the bottom. To return home, the navigator would sail north or south to bring Polaris to the altitude they had observed in their home port, then turn left or right and sail down the latitude, keeping Polaris at a constant angle. Over time, Arab navigators started tying knots at regular intervals of a fingerwidth, called an issbah, that’s about 1 degree and 36 minutes.

magnetosphere - an invisible barrier that surrounds a celestial objet. It is often generated by the movement of the liquid metal core of the object. Around a planet, it deflects high-energy, charged particles called cosmic rays that can either come from the Sun or, less often, from interstellar space.

prime meridian - Earth’s zero degree of longitude. In current maps and time zones, this invisible, imaginary line runs through London, England.

sextant - a device used to determine an observer’s location based on the observation of a known celestial object and a lot of calculation. It is still in use by sailors.

tropic of cancer - a line of latitude that marks where the Sun will be at noon on the summer solstice.

tropic of capricorn - a line of latitude that marks where the Sun will be at noon on the winter solstice.

Larcum Kendall And K1: The Greatest Watchmaker And Watch You Have (Probably) Never Heard Of

You may have heard of a few or more of the following historical people and events: Thomas Mudge, George Graham, John Harrison, the Longitude Prize, Captain James Cook, and the mutiny on the ‘HMS Bounty.’

However, you are less likely to have heard the name of a horologist who played a pivotal role in all of the above: Larcum Kendall (1719–1790). 250 years ago… Larcum Kendall completed K3 After John Harrison maritime chronometer H4 was made in 1761, underwent two sea trials to Jamaica, British clockmaker Larcum Kendall was asked to show its practical use by reconstructing exact H4 copies in 1769 (K1) and in 1772 (K2). Both K1 and K2 sea clocks worked fine, with K1 the better performer (James Cook 1st voyage) and K2 with the most remarkable history (1787 HMS Bounty). In 1774, upon request of the Board of Longitude, Larcum Kendall completed K3, a maritime chronometer which had 3 separate dials for hours, minutes and seconds. Although a marvellous instrument, tested by James Cook on his 3rd voyage, K3 never matched up to the original H4 or K1 maritime chronometers. The remaining years of the 18th century would see Ferdinand Berthoud housing maritime chronometers in wooden boxes,the John Arnold & Thomas Earnshaw controversy and both the British East India Company & the Royal Navy adding extra logbook columns for "Longitude by Chronometer", ending the use of the Lunar Angular Distance method.
