Dean in the Water - Part 1
Sam, Dean and you are eating in the restaurant of a hotel on the road called Lynnwood Inn. Dean’s plate is pretty much empty and he’s checking the obituaries in a newspaper. You are checking the ones he’s circling when you see one pretty odd about a girl named Sophie who drowned.
“This one…” you say, pointing out for him to circle it.
He does it and you’re distracted by a waitress who comes and talks to Dean.
“Can I get you anything else?” she asks.
You look up and see Dean grinning at her around the pen he’s chewing on. You grimace at all the flirting. Sam then comes over and sits down next to you.
“Just the check, please,” he says.
“Okay,” she walks showing a big smile.
Dean drops his head, then looks at Sam.
“You know, Sam,” he starts, “we are allowed to have fun once in a while.” He points at the waitress and you check that she’s wearing very short shorts. “That's fun,” he says.
Sam and you look at him.
“I don’t wanna block you, but please, next time don’t flirt in front of me,” you tease him.
“Just because you don’t get any action doesn’t mean I can’t get any action,” he told you.
“I can get action if I want to, I just… don’t want to,” you shrug.
“Yeah, sure,” he said.
“Shut up,” you mumbled.
Dean hands Sam the newspaper.
“Here, take a look at this, I think we got one,” he showed Sam.
Lake Manitoc, Wisconsin. Last week Sophie Carlton, eighteen, walks into the lake, doesn't walk out. Authorities dragged the water; nothing. Sophie Carlton is the third Lake Manitoc drowning this year. None of the other bodies were found either. They had a funeral two days ago.
“A funeral?” Sam asked.
“Yeah,” you answered. “They buried an empty coffin. For some closure I suppose.”
“Closure?” he asked, “What closure? People don't just disappear. Other people just stop looking for them.”
“Something you want to say to me?” Dean inquired, making you groan.
“The trail for Dad. It's getting colder every day.”
“Exactly,” Dean said. “So what are we supposed to do?”
“I don't know. Something. Anything,” Sam told him.
“You know what? I'm sick of this attitude. You don't think I wanna find Dad as much as you do?”
“Yeah, I know you do, it's just—”
“I'm the one that's been with him every single day for the past two years,” Dean cut him off, “while you've been off to college going to pep rallies. We will find Dad, but until then, we're gonna kill everything bad between here and there. Okay?”
There was a long pause in which Sam and Dean began a staring contest of hard looks, Sam rolled his eyes and the waitress walked by distracting Dean.
“All right,” Sam agreed, “Lake Manitoc,” no answer from Dean. “Hey!”
Dean returns his attention to Sam.
“Huh?” Dean hummed.
“How far?” asked Sam
You got back on the road again, your journey musicalized with Round and Round by Ratt on the stereo, you watched a clothesline with white sheets in one place, a little bit further was a man fishing on a small bridge. After a while, you see the “Welcome to Lake Manitoc, WI” sign. You go straight to the Carlton house. Dean pulls up in front of it and stops the engine. You get out and go to knock on the door. A man opens it.
“Will Carlton?” Dean asks.
“Yeah, that's right,” he answers
“I'm Agent Ford,” Dean lies, “This is Agent Hamill and Agent Fisher. We're with the US Wildlife Service,” he shows up a fake ID.
Will takes you around to the lake, his father Bill is sitting on a bench on the dock.
“She was about a hundred yards out,” Will explains to us looking at the lake, “That's where she got dragged down.”
“And you're sure she didn't just drown?” Dean asks.
“Yeah. She was a varsity swimmer,” Will answered. “She practically grew up in that lake. She was as safe out there as in her own bathtub.”
“So no splashing? No signs of distress?” Sam wonders.
“No,” Will shakes his head. “That's what I'm telling you.”
“Did you see any shadows in the water?” You add, “Maybe some dark shape breach the surface?”
“No,” Will denied. “Again, she was really far out there.”
“You ever see any strange tracks by the shoreline?” Dean asked.
“No, never. Why?” Will frowned, “Why, what do you think's out there?”
“We'll let you know as soon as we do,” you calm him.
Dean and you turn to head back to the car.
“What about your father?” Sam questions, making Dean and you to stop walking and turn back. “Can we talk to him?”
Will turns to look at his father, then turns back to you. “Look, if you don't mind, I mean... He didn't see anything and he kind of been through a lot,” he states.
“We understand,” Sam nods.
After that, the three of you go back to the car and drive up to the police station to talk to Sheriff Jake Devins.
“Now, I'm sorry,” Jake says, “but why does the Wildlife Service care about an accidental drowning?” he lets you into the station to go to his office.
“You sure it's accidental?” Sam asks him. “Will Carlton saw something grab his sister.”
“Like what?” the sheriff sighs while you get into his office. “Here, sit, please, “ he motions the chairs in front of his desk. “There are no indigenous carnivores in that lake,” he states, “There's nothing even big enough to pull down a person unless it was the Loch Ness Monster.”
“Yeah,” Dean nods, chuckling, “Right.” He glances at Sam and you.
“Will Carlton was traumatized, and sometimes the mind plays tricks,” Jake said looking at us. “Still—” he continued and sat down, “We dragged that entire lake. We even ran a sonar sweep, just to be sure, and there was nothing down there.”
“I’m sorry, but that's weird, though,” you say, “I mean, that's the third missing body reported this year.”
“I know,” he nods, ”These are people from my town. These are people I care about.”
“I know,” Dean responds.
“Anyway…” Jake sighs, leaning back in his chair, “All this...it won't be a problem much longer.”
“What do you mean?” you frown.
“Well, the dam, of course,” he states.
“Of course, the dam,” Dean looks at Sam and you, “It's, uh, it sprung a leak,” he agrees.
“It's falling apart,” he declares, “And the feds won't give us the grant to repair it, so they've opened the spillway. In another six months, there won't be much of a lake. There won't be much of a town, either. But as Federal Wildlife, you already knew that.”
“Exactly,” Dean nods.
Someone taps on the door, interrupting the conversation. You turn to see a young woman coming in. "Sorry, am I interrupting?” she apologizes and all of you stand up. “I can come back later.”
“Gentlemen and lady,” Jake said, “This is my daughter.”
“Hi,” you greet her.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you,” Dean says shaking her hand. “I’m Dean.”
“Andrea Barr,” she introduces, “Hi.”
“Hi,” Dean smiles.
You shake your head fighting the urge to laugh.
“They’re from Wildlife Service,” Jake says, “About the lake.”
“Oh,” she deadpans.
A boy walks in and around Andrea.
“Oh, hey there,” Dean says, “What’s your name?”
The kid just walks away without speaking and Andrea follows him.
“His name is Lucas,” Jake explains.
You turn back and look at the main room where Andrea and Lucas are.
“Is he okay?” Sam asks.
“My grandson's been through a lot,” Jake explains. “We all have.” He stands and goes to the door. “Well, if there's anything else I can do for you, please let me know.”
The four of you walk to leave the office.
“Thank you, Jake,” you thank him. “You know, now that you mentioned it, could you point us in the direction of a reasonably priced motel?”
“Lakefront Motel,” Andrea answers. “Go around the corner. It's about two blocks south.”
“Two—would you mind showing us?” Dean asked.
Andrea laughs. “You want me to walk you two blocks?”
“Not if it's any trouble,” Dean says.
“I'm heading that way anyway,” she nods and turns to Jake, “I'll be back to pick up Lucas at three.”
She then turns to Lucas, “We'll go to the park, okay, sweetie?” she kisses him on the head.
Dean wave as you leave and Jake nods.
“Thanks again,” Sam says.
Outside, Andrea leads your way along the street.
“So, cute kid,” Dean tells her.
“Thanks,” she says.
“Kids are the best, huh?” he mentions, Andrea glances at him and ignores him.
You look at Sam, frowning and feeling the cringe. You keep walking until you stop in front of the Lakefront Motel.
“There it is,” Andrea points, “Like I said, two blocks.”
“Thanks,” you and Sam say in unison.
Andrea looks at Dean. “Must be hard, with your sense of direction, never being able to find your way to a decent pickup line.” She leaves and calls back over he shoulder, “Enjoy your stay!”
That’s when you lose it and start laughing.
“'Kids are the best'?” Sam mocks. “You don't even like kids.”
“I love kids,” Dean shrugs.
“Name three children that you even know,” Sam dares.
Dean thinks and comes up with nothing. Sam waves a hand and walks into the hotel, leaving Dean scratching his head and whining that he’s thinking.
“Dude,” you pat his shoulder, “That made my skin crawl of how lame that was.”
“Shut up,” he mumbles.
You got a room at the motel Andrea recommended you. Sam was working on his laptop, you were lying in one of the beds, and Dean was going through his clothing.
“So there are the three drowning victims this year,” Sam acknowledged.
“Any before that?” Dean asked.
“Uh, yeah...” Sam answered, checking the browsers he has open with The Lake Manitoc Tribune, the local newspaper. “Six more, spread out over the past thirty-five years. Those bodies were never recovered either. If there is something out there, it's picking up its pace.”
Dean folds his clothes and tosses them onto the bed. “So, what, we got a lake monster on a binge?”
“This whole lake monster theory, it, it just bugs me,” Sam shakes his head.
”Why?” Dean asked coming to read over our shoulders.
“Loch Ness,” he started to number, “Uh, Lake Champlain, there are literally hundreds of eyewitness accounts, but here, almost nothing. Whatever it is out there, no one's living to talk about it.”
“Wait,” Dean says pointing at the screen. You get up and crawl to them. “Barr, Christopher Barr. Where have I heard that name before?”
“It’s Andrea’s last name,” you remind him, standing next to them and looking at the computer.
“Christopher Barr, the victim in May,” Sam reads. He clicks a link opening a new page. You read the header “Local man in tragic accident.” A picture of Lucas loads up. “Oh. Christopher Barr was Andrea's husband, Lucas's father. Apparently, he took Lucas out swimming. Lucas was on a floating wooden platform when Chris drowned. Two hours before the kid got rescued.”
You suddenly felt goosebumps on your back and shudder. Dean looks at you.
Sam clicks the picture for a better look, then scratches his head. “Maybe we have an eyewitness after all.”
“No wonder that kid was so freaked out,” Dean states. “Watching one of your parents die isn't something you just get over.”

S1E3 - Dead In The Water (Chapter 1)
A/N: I’m posting again after taking a really long break. My apologies, I had a bit of a family crisis. Everything’s all good, time to get back to my preferred universe.
Word count: 3,080
Summary: It’s been over week since you took the wendigo case in Blackwater Ridge. With no new leads on their father’s whereabouts, the Winchester boys are getting antsy and clash about what to do next. A newspaper article sends the three of you to Wisconsin, where something stirs in the dark waters of Lake Manitoc, responsible for the disappearance of a young girl.
“And last night, Joni invited Mrs. Lieberman over for dinner and she brought one of her tuna casseroles-”
“Oh no...” I groaned, having had a firsthand experience of our neighbor’s cooking skills.
I had spent the past ten minutes of my Wednesday morning in one of Wyoming’s finest payphone booths, as my little brother Gus filled me in on the latest events back at home.
“I tried to get her cat to finish it for me, but even he wouldn’t touch it.”
Despite how much I loved hearing about the things going on in his life, right now my stomach was growling, egging me on for some breakfast, making it increasingly difficult to pay attention to him. My eyes trailed to the hotel diner behind me, where Sam and Dean had occupied the counter - their heads were practically butted together and I rolled my eyes at the thought of them arguing again. It had been over a week now since we had left Colorado and we had found no new leads on John’s whereabouts, which made everyone tense. Dean had started looking for cases elsewhere, to Sam’s annoyance. Sam didn’t think we should be doing anything else but searching for their dad. I knew he was worried, but I had to agree with Dean - although I didn’t tell him so. The last thing I wanted was for Sam to think I was taking his brother’s side. I only agreed that until we had something real to follow, taking cases was all we could do.
I said my goodbyes to Gus and headed inside. Sam saw me come in, holding up a hand to wave me over. It seemed their squabbling had simmered on its own - I couldn’t help but notice the vacant seat that was now left between them.
With a small smile of greeting, I hopped onto the middle seat, eyes skimming the menu suspended on the wall. The smell of pancakes and bacon was almost intoxicating enough to make me forget we were looking for a job.
“So, got anything?” I asked, eyeing the newspaper spread out in front of Dean.
“Think so,” Dean placed the page in front of me, the article he had circled in red capturing my attention.
“Lake Manitoc, Wisconsin.” He began, paraphrasing. “Last week Sophie Carlton, eighteen, walks into the lake, doesn’t walk out. Authorities dragged the water; nothing.”
I stared at the photo they had used of Sophie. It struck me that she was only a few years younger than I was. I remembered taking my yearbook picture like it was yesterday. Dean continued, “She’s the third Lake Manitoc drowning this year. None of the other bodies were found either.”
I admitted it sounded like our kinda gig, but more than that, Sophie’s life was over before her senior year was and nobody had a clue what had happened to her. I felt like her family was owed the truth.
“Alright, Lake Manitoc,” I said, nodding. “I’ll get breakfast to go then.”
We made the thousand miles from Wyoming to Wisconsin in about two days. We made an overnight stop at a motel for what I knew was my sake - despite Sam’s protests that he and Dean were tired too. We both knew they could’ve made the trip in half the time without me, but Dean insisted I was doing them both a favor for coming with them. I was grateful regardless, I wasn’t used to living on the road like they were. Apart from Sam’s hiatus to college, this was the only lifestyle they had ever known, and it seemed old habits really did die hard, as he had adjusted back to it with ease. If my aunt Joni hadn’t taken me and Gus in when my mom died, we probably would have faced the same upbringing.
Since I had hit the road with the Winchester boys, I had thought over my decision profusely. There wasn’t much else to do on our travels but listen to the radio and think, until the ever-moving horizon turned my brain to jelly.
I realized I might have been a bit rash, tossing my college degree aside to come with them, but I had convinced myself it was the right thing to do. Their dad was missing, and Sammy was grieving, and whilst I could never imagine myself completely embracing hunting as a lifestyle, it offered me the kind of freedom I had been craving my whole life.
I had decided that I would stick with them at the very least until we found their dad, alive and well. I owed John that much considering all he had done for my mom before she passed.
It was around midday when we reached town and we didn’t plan on wasting the day. Sam and Dean took off right away to talk to the Carlson’s. I didn’t have an ID for the Wildlife Service (I’d have to get that one made for the future), so I checked us into a motel and began digging through website after website for anything on the history of the lake.
I didn’t mind being left alone for a while. I had been stuck in a car with them both bickering for two days so I rather appreciated the silence. I sat cross-legged on the bed in my room, Sam’s laptop propped up on my lap. I really hadn’t been snooping, but I had saved a document to the computer and when I searched for it in his recent items, I stumbled across a picture of him and Jess. I was compelled to click on it. From the costumes and the date on the file, it was from Halloween, just days before...
Jess was dressed as a nurse, but I wasn’t surprised to see Sam not in costume. He had never liked the holiday - too much crazy in his life already, I supposed. She was in his arms, and they were both beaming at the camera. That wasn’t for me to see, and it only infuriated me. I closed the file, slammed the laptop shut and pushed it aside, suddenly feeling very guilty. Sam had been happy. He was doing what he wanted for the first time in his life. I had been so proud when he was accepted into Stanford, I had even been the one to send him off. But now it was back, the thing that had killed his mom, and it was fucking with his life once again. Maybe I was going to have to stick around to see the thing dead after all.
I jumped at the sound of my ringtone. It was Dean.
“Hey, what you got?” I asked, nonchalant.
“We’re on our way down to the police station now,” he informed me. I could hear the rumble of the Impala’s engine in the background. “We were just at the Carlton’s house. Sophie’s brother Will says she was a hundred yards out, when she was dragged under.”
“Well, what did he see?” I inquired, sitting upright as he peaked my interest. So far, we really had no clue as to what we were dealing with.
“He wasn’t there.”
“Okay,” I said slowly. “But if he didn’t see anything, how can he be sure she didn’t just drown?” I had to ask the obvious, we had to be certain this was our kind of job.
“Sophie was a varsity swimmer.” Dean said shortly.
“Oh.” That was good enough for me. “I think I have something too.” I began. “It’s a good thing you called before, I looked into the area. Manitocs’ dam is falling apart and the town can’t get a grant to repair it-”
I heard him and Sam discussing something in low tones so I wasn’t sure he was really listening. “Dean? Listen, this is important. It could blow your cover with the Sheriff. The lake’s gotta be the source of this thing, but it’s going to be gone in a few months, so I was thinking that might explain the increase in bodies, right?”
I waited for his judgement, but all I got was some feedback on the other end of the line. He was distracted. “Alright, good job, we’ll be back soon.”
I busied myself with reading John’s journal the rest of the day. Dean had left it with me for research, but, naturally, I was distracted by the vast knowledge it contained. I soaked up page after page of notes on creatures I didn’t even know were real, some I hadn’t ever heard of. John’s sketches were terrifying. I noted down a few phone numbers scrawled in the margins that caught my eye - I presumed they were family friends so I set them aside for Dean to call later. It didn’t feel like my place to follow them up myself, but I thought maybe one of them may have heard from the eldest Winchester.
A couple hours passed, I had exhausted my resources and was staring idly out of the window, consumed in a daydream, when I caught a glimpse of the Impala turning into the motel lot.
There was a knock on my door a minute later, I called out that it was open and Sam stuck his head through the gap to tell me that they were back. I was still a little dazed, and he must’ve noticed because he frowned at me slightly before coming to a stop at the foot of the bed.
“You okay?” He asked, shrugging off his jacket.
I gave him my full attention, suddenly burdened by a surge of guilt as I remembered how I had invaded his privacy earlier. “Yeah, yeah I’m fine. What did the cops say?” I said, turning our focus back to the case.
“We talked to the sheriff,” he informed me, the bed dipping slightly as he sat on the edge. “He did a sonar sweep of the entire lake.”
“And?” I prompted, hopeful, as there was another knock on the door.
“And nothing.” Dean interrupted his brother, shutting the door behind himself. “Lake was clean.”
“Well I dug up as much as was on public record...” I scooted down the bed, to present my finds to them. I flicked through the disordered stack of paper that was my research until I found what I was looking for. “Turns out there’s been six more victims over the last thirty-five years, and none of those bodies were recovered either.” Dean paced the length of the room in thought, his arms folded. “The most recent three were all only in the last couple of months.”
Dean scratched his chin before deciding, “I think you were right about the dam. The lake’ll be gone soon so it’s upping the body count.”
“Whatever this thing is, it’s running out of time to get what it wants.” I concluded grimly.
“So, what?” Sam interjected, setting the records aside. “We got a lake monster on a binge?”
We exchanged glances - all three of us skeptical. “The whole lake-monster theory- it just bugs me.” Sam said, not yet satisfied with the verdict.
“Maybe a water spirit?” I offered half-heartedly.
“We have to find out more about this thing before somebody else gets hurt,” Dean decided.
“Dean, we don’t have any leads.” Sam said shortly. He turned to me to elaborate. “Will wouldn’t let us talk to his dad.”
“I mean, the poor guy...” I muttered at the thought of Sophie’s father.
“I don’t know,” Sam said unconvinced, glancing at his brother. “Did you get the feeling he wasn’t telling us everything?”
“You should’ve seen the look on his face,” Dean told me.
I glared at him. “Yeah well, next time we need to pose as Federal Wildlife I’ll have my ID ready.”
“Barr.” Sam interrupted suddenly. He was peering at his laptop in thought, eyes tracing the screen as he read. “Barr. Where have I heard that name before?”
Christopher Barr was one of the three recent victims. I learned he had been married to the Sheriff’s daughter, Andrea, who the boys had met down at the station along with their son Lucas. Sam mentioned there had been some shameless flirting on Dean’s part, of course, but I cut him some slack - he hadn’t realized she was a widow. A year ago, Christopher had taken Lucas swimming when he disappeared just like Sophie Carlton. The poor kid was left floating on a wooden platform for two hours before he was rescued.
“Maybe we have an eye witness after all,” I muttered, exchanging grim glances with the pair of them. None of us wanted to drag a kid back into this mess but it was looking more and more like the only lead we had.
“No wonder that kid was so freaked out,” Dean remarked. “Watching one of your parents die isn’t something you just get over.”
I skimmed my eyes over him.
Damn. I had forgotten hunts could get like this; really fucking personal.
My mom had been dead for almost nine years now. It was an accident; I was thirteen. That’s how I had really met the Winchesters. My dad had been out of the picture for years, so when she passed we fell under the care of my aunt Joni, as my mom’s only living relative. Joni had the funeral once we moved to Oregon so Gus and I could still be close to her. I got my first glimpse of Sam and Dean at the service. Even among crowds of people I had never met, the pair of them stuck out like sore thumbs. I didn’t know it then, but they had come to attend in the place of their dad, an old friend of my mom’s, who was... otherwise unavailable.
As if high school wasn’t brutal enough, I had to start freshman year, not once, but twice. Had I not bumped into Sam underneath the bleachers on that very first day, my life would probably be very different now. It had been his first day too, Sam and Dean had enrolled for a couple of months, and we quickly found we had more in common than just that. Dead moms, annoying brothers, and the like. I had never had a friend like Sam before, but with the Winchester’s arrival in town, so came the sudden presence of the supernatural into my life.
It hadn’t really been their fault, it was just a coincidence. In fact, had they not realized a poltergeist had latched itself onto my brother and I, we probably would have died. They said it was attracted to the negative emotions surrounding my mom’s death - the grief, the anger. When everything was over, Sam told me what he’d been hiding from me, his family secret; the truth of what was really out there - and it scared the shit out of me. I had just been a kid, trying to wrap my head around the concept of death and the loss of my only parent. But what was the existence of the supernatural after dealing with all of that?
I hadn’t realize that there were other ways for death to cripple a kid until I saw Lucas. I didn’t think it was such a good idea - going to a playground without a kid - but Dean insisted we play it cool. With a bit of subtle stalking, we found Andrea and her son on the grass - the kid a few feet away, his head down as he drew with a fistful of crayons. Sam and I let Dean take the lead on this one.
“Can we join you?” he asked Andrea, casually.
Dean was undoubtedly a people person, though he didn’t always come off that way. He was also good with kids, which didn’t take me by surprise like it did everyone else. I knew he had practically raised Sam himself, but sometimes when he wore his aloof attitude for too long, even I could forget this side of him.
Andrea looked up. “I’m here with my son.” She was pretty, I noticed.
“Oh. Mind if I say hi?” Dean said, already making his way across the grass.
“He’s harmless, I promise,” I smiled sitting beside her. I held out a hand, “I’m Y/N by the way, we haven’t have the chance to meet.”
She introduced herself politely, still looking uneasy about Dean approaching her son. Sam interjected with some timely small talk.
“Tell your friend this whole Jerry Maguire thing is not gonna work on me,” Andrea said, eyeing him stubbornly. I suppressed a smirk as I realized she was attracted to him.
“I don’t think that’s what this is about,” Sam told her, sitting next to me.
“He seems wonderful,” I said, watching Dean kneel beside the small boy. “Lucas, is it?”
Andrea smiled warmly. “He’s a real good kid.”
I nodded. “I have a kid brother,” I felt compelled to tell her. “He’s a little older than Lucas.”
“They grow up fast, don’t they?” Andrea remarked.
“Just wait ‘til he starts bringing bugs into the house,” I warned her, earning a laugh from her.
Andrea seemed more comfortable after that, as I had hoped. She eyed Sam and I for a moment. “So, how long have you two been together?”
“Oh no-” I shook my head.
Sam cleared his throat, “We’re not-”
Despite the same assumption being made incessantly over the years we been friends, we had never learned how to deal with it.
“Oh, I’m sorry,” Andrea said, and the three of us sat in an awkward silence broken only by Dean’s return.
Before he said anything, she began explaining her son’s disposition to us. Since his dad’s accident, Lucas hadn’t said a word, not even to her. Doctors had said it wasn’t an uncommon result of post traumatic stress when it came to kids.
“You know, he used to have such life.” Andrea sighed, watching Lucas with the kind of softness only a mother could harbor for her child.
“He was hard to keep up with, to tell you the truth. Now he just sits there. Drawing those pictures, playing with those army men. I just wish...” Her sentence trailed away from her as Lucas approached us, a picture in his hand.
Andrea smiled at him.“Hey sweetie.”
But Lucas stopped in front of Dean, his head down, holding out one of his drawings .
“Thanks.” Dean looked taken aback, swiftly accepting it. “Thanks, Lucas.”
Lucas quickly returned to his mother’s side, but Dean seemed troubled as he stared at the page. He flipped it over for Sam and I to see, whilst Andrea’s back was turned - it was a simple picture of a house, but it left the three of us unsettled. Was this Lucas trying to tell us something?

Next Time Use the Doorbell
“It’s New Year’s Eve, Ms. Grant. Even you can and should be able to take a break for that.”
Cat pulled her glasses down enough to glare at the brightly colored superhero currently floating in through what she thought had been a locked window on the second floor of her D.C. Brownstone. “Hurry up and get inside, Supergirl. You’re letting all the warm air out.” She glanced back to her monitors, not bothering with warm welcomes. “I thought that window was locked.”
The young blonde awkwardly touched down in front Cat’s desk after pushing the window closed and fiddling with the lock for a moment. “I guess you forgot to lock I the last time you had it open?”
Cat snorted. “Three months ago? Hardly. Did you at least repair the damage?”
Supergirl glanced backward at the window and gave a little shrug. “Good as new?”
Again, Cat looked up over the tops of her glasses. “Let’s hope so.” With an overly heavy sigh, she closed the lid of her laptop and leaned back in her chair. “To what do I owe the pleasure this evening? I assume even you have some sort of party to go to or whatever it is you Millennials do for New Year’s. Hang out?”
“Well, I,” the younger woman awkwardly cleared her throat. “…yeah, I mean, yes, of course I do, but so do hundreds of other people tonight. It’s a dangerous time of the year, Ms. Grant, so I usually help my cousin and together we do extra patrols around the world to help with the worst of the issues that crop up due to New Year’s celebrations.”
The older woman huffed, reaching for the bourbon seated neatly next to her computer. “Of course you do.” Taking a contemplative sip, she eyed her surprise visitor with a critical eye. “So, are you going to tell me what brings you to the other side of the country to come see me via breaking and entering, or are we going to sit here until midnight and pretend to enjoy this stilted conversation?”
“Is it really breaking and entering if I fixed the damage? I mean, there’s no real breaking…” Supergirl trailed off, face starting to color slightly red.
“Semantics.” Cat motioned for the other woman to take a seat on the office’s sofa where she joined her a moment later. “You could’ve just rang the doorbell.”
“I didn’t want the Secret Service detail asking me why I was visiting you,” Supergirl admitted with a grimace.
“Well, that is interesting.” Cat sat her glass down on the side table and turned her body to completely face the younger blonde. “Should I be worried?”
“No, I just… It’s just that I think it might look suspicious if Supergirl was visiting the White House Press Secretary at 11:30 at night. I thought it might be better, more discreet, if I came in through the window.”
“Yes, I could see where that might cause some issues for some factions of the president’s constituency, but those are the same factions who don’t really care for me as the mouthpiece for the White House, so I doubt she’d care much if there happened to be controversy. Of course,” Cat added with just a hint of a smirk, “it would look far less suspicious if my former assistant were to come for a visit.”
Supergirl groaned at the implication. “Ms. Grant…”
“Kara, I have a top secret security clearance with an SCI. There is very little I no longer know, and what I don’t know is limited to about ten people. If you don’t think the very first thing I did after receiving my clearance was to crosscheck my instincts and confirm what I already knew about both you and your sister, then you clearly don’t know me at all.”
Kara released a long, heavy sigh as so leaned back and allowed her head to fall upon the back of the sofa. “I really should’ve realized that. I guess you know all about the DEO, then?”
“Yes, and I’m aware of the recent events surrounding it,” the older woman replied calmly as she picked her glass up to take another sip.
“Right, of course you are.” Kara sat up again and ran a hand through her hair as she considered her options. “I came here tonight because…” She grunted frustratedly. “Honestly, Ms. Grant, I’m not sure. I was truly doing patrols, but I saw your light on, and it’s been a so long since we’ve talked, and I miss our talks. You’ve always been so good at helping me work through things whenever everything started to feel like it was unraveling, and I just…”
“Feel unraveled?” Cat raised an eyebrow at the slow affirmative nod from the other woman. She finished her drink and replaced the glass on its coaster before she replied. “The DEO reports tell me that you had to shoot Mon-El into space before you could stop the invasion. I believe as a precautionary measure to protect him from being harmed?”
Kara nodded. “Yes. There was no other way.”
“And I understand that you quit your job at Catco, which we will return to shortly, but decided to return after Lena bought the company from me. Is that right?”
Again, the younger woman nodded. “Yes.”
“And now Mon-El is back and with a wife, no less?” Cat rolled her eyes. “That didn’t take long, did it?”
“Well, technically, he was away for seven years. Time travel is often complicated, and seven years is a long time,” Kara countered weakly.
Cat’s eyes rolled again, this time accompanied by a derisive snort. “Is it? I’ve literally gone without sex with another person for longer than it took that boy to find another skirt to chase, and it wasn’t because I’d lost my supposed true love to anything. I was just too busy working to bother with it.”
“Ms. Grant, it was seven…”
“Years. Yes, I read the reports.” The older woman brushed the argument off with a deft wave of her hand. “Kara, let me ask you something.” She leaned a bit forward, fully pulling in the other woman’s attention. “Do you really love him, or do you love the idea of what he could have been if he’d actually changed for himself?”
Kara shook her head. “What do you mean?”
“I’ve read the reports, and I’ve watched the videos of training sessions between the two of you. I’ve seen the DEO surveillance footage, and I know his history both before he arrived here and after he landed. I know how he treated you and some of the things he said. Nothing about any of that leads me to believe he had good intentions. What I see is someone who changed their pattern of behavior to impress the girl they wanted to bed.” Cat held her hand up to stave off the protest about to fly at her. “Kara, I’ve seen it a hundred times. People who change for another person don’t change at all. It’s a façade, a lie they perpetuate to get what they want. People who change for themselves because of some internal realization external of what anyone else may want them to do are the ones who actually change. If someone tells you they’re a better person because you’re around or because of you, if they’re only good or better when you’re present, and if they consistently demonstrate a pattern of behavior that indicate they don’t embrace what they claim they have, then can you honestly say they’ve changed or are truly on the way to changing?”
For a long time, Kara sat quietly and stared at the carpet as she honestly thought about what Cat had said while Cat simply sat and waited. With a deep breath, Kara finally answered quietly, begrudgingly, “No.”
“Well, then, I think you have your answer to most of your issues, then. Don’t you?” With a quick pat to the younger woman’s knee, Cat stood to take her glass back to the bar. “When you can find someone who changed in a positive way not because you made them a better person but because they wanted to be better based on inspiration from you, then I think you’re on the right road to finding Mr. Right. Until then, I hope Mon-whatever was at least a good lay.”
Kara quietly snorted.
“Well, that’s a shame,” Cat replied with a half-hearted sigh.
“What if,” Kara’s voice started shaky but slowly found strength, “it’s not Mr. Right I’m looking for?”
“Well, you should know I’m equal opportunity, Kara.” Cat spun around and leaned nonchalantly against the bar. “Mr. Right, Ms. Right, or Mx. Right. Whatever floats your boat so long as what’s floating it is actually supportive and not the anchor holding you in place.”
Kara stood, flipping her cape out and shaking her shoulders a little as she took a few steps toward the older woman. “You changed.”
Cat gave her a slow blink. “Well, I shifted.”
“No,” Kara replied with a soft stubbornness coloring her voice. “You changed. You said so yourself. You’ve told me more than once that I inspired you.”
“Well, that’s true, but,” Cat shifted slightly, “I told you that so you’d understand how important you are to me and the rest of the world. Self-doubt in a superhero or a reporter is an undesirable trait.”
The younger woman narrowed her eyes. “Right.” She chewed on her bottom lip for a quick moment. “I have tomorrow off. Would you like to maybe have lunch?”
“Lunch with Supergirl, superhero to the world, or lunch with Kara Danvers, ace rookie reporter?” Cat raised her eyebrows in question.
Kara rolled her eyes but smiled. “Lunch with Kara Danvers, friend of Cat Grant’s, for now.”
“For now?” The older woman quirked an eyebrow. “Brazen.” She smirked. “Lucky for you I like brazen. Swing by around 11:30. I’ll let the Secret Service know to expect you.”
The younger woman’s smile widened. “I’ll be here.” She turned to make her way back to the window. “Will you lock this behind me?”
“As if I have a choice,” Cat replied with faux annoyance. “Next time,” she called quietly after the retreating form of the superhero, “use the doorbell.”

ELECTRICIAN NEAR ME- What is an Electrician?
An electrician is a tradesman specializing in electrical wiring of buildings, transmission lines, stationary machines, and related equipment. Electricians may be employed in the installation of new electrical components or the maintenance and repair of existing electrical infrastructure. Electricians may also specialize in wiring ships, airplanes, and other mobile platforms, as well as data and cable lines.
When we refer to, “electricians,” we’re talking about tradespeople that install and repair wiring found in buildings and the various electrical systems found within them, including HVAC, security, lighting and computer network systems.
Today’s electricians can be divided into four main categories:
Residential Electricians – These electricians work in home dwellings that can range from single-family houses to large apartment complexes.
Commercial Electricians – Work sites can include office buildings, retail outlets, schools, hospitals, and industrial facilities that do not involve high-voltage. These electricians install and repair electrical systems found in existing commercial buildings, new construction, and renovation projects.
Industrial Electricians – These electricians perform maintenance and installation of electrical components and machinery found in industrial settings. This may include working with high-voltage electricity at industrial manufacturing locations.
Low Voltage Electricians – As their name implies, these electricians are involved with low-voltage systems that primarily include voice, data, and video (VDV) networks and systems. Inside the industry you may hear these professionals referred to as VDV electricians or Voice-Data-Video electricians. Their work typically focuses on phone lines and fiber optic cable repair and installation in any setting where these materials are used.
You will find that some states combine some of these classifications. For example, some states may combine residential and low voltage into one category. Others may combine commercial and industrial electricians into one category.
In addition to classifying electricians by role, they can be further subdivided into three additional categories based on experience and training:
Apprentice – These electricians-in-training work under the supervision of an experienced professional for a number of years before they reach the journeyman level
Journeyman – This status is awarded once an electrician completes their apprenticeship and is judged by a state-approved authority as being competent in their trade
Master – Master electricians are defined as those with years of experience as journeymen who have demonstrated high-level competence through a state-approved exam
As you might have guessed, each state’s electrician licensing regulatory agency defines the parameters and scope of duties for each of these levels.
A Historical Perspective on Electricians
Even though man didn’t master electricity until the 1880s – the time that saw the first central power stations – we’ve certainly understood its brute force since prehistoric times. In fact, many of the most important gods of mythology were those with the power to wield electricity in the form of lightning. While there may have been some close calls along the road to discovering how to make electricity work for humankind, it wasn’t until around 1600 that significant steps towards understanding electromagnetism were made. It was then that the English astronomer William Gilbert made the first recorded in-depth study of static electricity. At that time he found the best way of creating static electricity was by rubbing a cloth against amber, introducing the word “electro” to the English language, which is Greek for amber.
Finally, during a thunderstorm in 1752, Benjamin Franklin did his key-on-the-kite experiment that we all learned about in grade school, and with several other important figures of the day, major inroads were made towards mastering electricity. By 1875, the first electricians installed the first municipal street lighting system in Los Angeles, followed by Paris three years later. Even then those electricians still had somewhat of a divine nature.
Also of interest to note, up until about 1884 there was vigorous competition between the widespread adoption of alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC). Had it not been for the invention of the first transformer that year perhaps all of our houses today would be powered by direct current?
Fast-forward to the present and you find that most people take electricity for granted. However that doesn’t diminish the importance of electrician’s one iota.

A Successful Career Without A College Degree – How to Make it Happen
A Successful Career Without A College Degree – How to Make it Happen
By Mel Feller, MPA, MHR
Mel Feller Seminars, Coaching For Success 360 Inc. /Mel Feller Coaching
You can get a great job without a college degree.
That is right. Great jobs without a degree are not impossible to find. In addition, if you are willing to settle for “just” good jobs without college, you will not find it hard to find one.
If you, or someone you know, is interested in finding a job, bypassing college could be a smart move right now. Finding top jobs without a college degree is a very individual mission. What is right for Susan down the street may not be the best move for you.
Going to a trade school instead might be a brilliant move for you.
I read recently that only 1 in 4 college graduates find jobs. On top of that, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 8 of the 10 fastest growing jobs don’t require college degrees.
As you might expect, these are service jobs and they are difficult to outsource. Even better. That is why the opportunities are there.
The question is, how do you decide which trade to be trained in and how do you get the training at the least cost?
Here are the steps I suggest you take:
Flex Your Brain
Make a list of all the jobs you find interesting. Even if you ultimately want to be a business owner rather than an employee, be open-minded. If you want to own a fleet of plumbing trucks one day, start as a plumber. In fact, you should look at it in reverse. Just because you might start as a plumber does not mean you cannot own a fleet of plumbing trucks one day. Good jobs without a college degree might lead to great business ownership!
In addition, you can always learn a trade and go to college down the road if you so choose- just make sure that you do not spend money you do not have to when you get your degree. The point is nothing you do now is irrevocable.
Investigate
There are a great deal of high paying no degree jobs.
According to CNN, here are 19 top careers without a college degree:
1· Air traffic controller
Annual income: $102,030
2· Storage and distribution manager
Annual income: $66,600
3· Transportation manager
Annual income: $66,600
4· Police and detectives supervisor
Annual income: $64,430
·
5.Non-retail sales manager
Annual income: $59,300
6· Forest fire fighting and prevention supervisor
Annual income: $58,920
7· Municipal firefighting and prevention supervisor
Annual income: $58,902
8· Real estate broker
Annual income: $58,720
9· Elevator installers and repairer
Annual income: $58,710
10· Sales representative
Annual income: $58,580
11· Dental hygienist
Annual income: $58,350
12· Radiation therapist
Annual income: $57,700
13· Nuclear medicine technologist
Annual income: $56,450
14· Child support, missing persons and unemployment insurance fraud investigator
Annual income: $53,900
15·Criminal investigators and special agent
Annual income: $53,990
16· Immigration and Customs inspector
Annual income: $53,990
17· Police detective
Annual Income: $53,990
18· Police identification and records officer
Annual income: $53,990
19· Commercial pilot
Annual income: $53,870
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, 2 out of every 3 jobs only require on-the-job training. You want great jobs with no college degree. There you are.
If you are competing for one of these jobs, going to college could actually hurt you.
Why? Because the other people competing for that job will have had 4 years of experience while you were hanging out at Starbucks with your laptop and iPhone.
Connect
Now that you know what you want to do, make sure there is going to be a job waiting for you once you are trained. Just because there are jobs that do not require a degree does not mean you will get one. Investigate!
Talk to people in the industry. Ask them about job prospects. Ask what they like and dislike about their jobs. Ask what they think about the future of the industry.
I guarantee that if you call 10 people in the industry, 7 will be more than happy to meet with you for a cup of coffee to give you a clear picture.
Ask them how they got into the profession, where they were trained and what schools (if any) they would recommend for you. Most important, ask who else you should meet to learn more.
Meet with at least 10 people in the industry to make sure your view is accurate.
If you do not know how to get in touch with people working in the field, no problem.
Schools
Interview the various trade schools that offer training. Ask to speak with alumni currently working in the industry. Ask if they started their careers without college. Then, when you meet with these folks, ask them for a few other references – people who did not necessarily go the school they graduated from. Talk to those people too.
While you are interviewing the schools, ask about job placement assistance and success rates.
Remember that you only have to spend the money to be trained once but have a lifetime of earnings ahead. If one school costs more but has a far better success rate, it could still be a better bargain.
Oh…and one more thing. If you already have a college degree and cannot find a job or your retired and want to earn money, you can still follow these same steps to land one of these awesome jobs.

How To Discover Your Passion And Make Money From It
The reality is, some of the Florida land being provided for sale is inaccessible or wet or both. In central Florida alone there are numerous "paper street" subdivisions (roads that have never been built, just appearing on a map or plat) with lots becoming provided for sale. Some ineffective property is being purchased at its genuine value and then sold to the unknowing individual for an inflated cost, sometimes a number of thousands of dollars over its genuine value. The Web is complete of options to make cash from home. Nevertheless, you should discover the reality powering them. 1 of the very best methods to make money on-line is by offering products or solutions. First away from, you should evaluation the need for the goods or item. The coming guideline is placing your info in from of curious professionals. The last suggestion is turning your traffic in to revenue. You also must be readied for success. You require to perform a feasibility study to determine whether or not your business enterprise is really worth your time or definitely not. You are able to be one of those people who make great hard earned money from residence. Pressure washing companies need to appear into the hefty industry and equipment cleansing sector at vegetation, rail yards, ports, agricultural corporate farms, oil area services and heavy construction. I hope you have loved these days's stress washing situation study. Think on it. Most individuals on-line get intimidated with the believed of creating their personal goods. They believe that this is something that only online professionals can do. What they don't know is product development can be a fairly simple task. You just need to financial institution on your skills and determine the needs of online users. For occasion, if you are presently making money via your weblogs, you can produce brief ebooks that contain the step-by-stage manual that help these people who are searching for ways to make extra money on-line. You see, it's that simple. Remember, you'll be talking to accomplished people who have produced a great deal of money investing in other companies. Ask for their input! They will like this method because it exhibits that you are looking to develop strong and lucrative relationships. Keep a good mindset. It is not the person customer's fault you are promoting an merchandise without the revenue margin you had been hoping to obtain. Be well mannered and pleased for them. Granted this is hard to do however rudeness towards them will outcome in dropping both your revenue of the lost chief AND the customer. Tip No. five: Display early that you're severe. The very best way to get your landlord's interest is to show - early - that you're ready and willing to move somewhere else if the renewal procedure doesn't function to your satisfaction. Some of the standard attributes of the leather-based business case are a good high quality removable leather strap, for keeping your luggage on your shoulder. You can also get a high quality leather case for your laptop computer, which would fit the executive picture completely. Every auto supply store carries a dazzling array of products to achieve every fantasy a driver may have to fix or enhance his vehicle. I've attempted a great deal of them and my summary is that every 1 signifies an improve in working expenses. If you are a solopreneur it is up to you to do this. If you understand that you haven't been doing sufficient business development, and you know you never will, consider outsourcing. If you have workers, you can choose to be the 1 to do this or you can delegate it someone else. No matter what, it should be carried out and done consistently. After revision, ask yourself if the anticipated profits are really worth the dangers you will take? Does it make sense to invest your time and cash in this method? If so, move on to the full company strategy with a distinct perception into exactly where to concentrate your study. The Future Following Repairing Your Poor Credit For Your Business- Use the loan you get a valuable seed. Make your payments on time if not early, don't complain about the rates. Once you have paid them on time for some time they probably will give you much more cash at a lower interest rate. You will also become qualified for other funding resources at lower rate. This first bad credit business mortgage you acquire is just a bridge to lower rates, higher loan amounts, and competition for your business with other conventional loan companies. Bad credit lenders know this and will make changes to keep your company once you are a great on time payer and have become extremely extremely predictable. Investing your cash in a business that has really absent via a news and shows great promise is a calculated risk. Investing your cash in something you know next to nothing about - and hoping you hit the jackpot - is plain reckless. In the coming days, I will be that includes a sequence on "Small Business: From Much better to Very best." With financial figures showing millions without jobs, companies continuing to reduce jobs and customers tightening their purse strings, there is a fantastic deal of pressure to handle company and preserve a bottom line that stays in the black.

In the Carolinas, Churches Provide Spiritual Refuge and Shelter From the Storm
By Campbell Robertson, Richard Fausset and Anemona Hartocollis, NY Times, Sept. 16, 2018
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.--Services at Manna Church, a big nondenominational congregation on the west side of town, began at 9 a.m. with announcements.
“We’ve got 10 port-a-potties.”
“They’re setting up showers in the back.”
Pastor Michael Fletcher, standing at the entrance, welcomed the pilgrims arriving out of the pounding rain: A man with his belongings gathered in a soaked towel on his back. A grandmother fleeing her probably flood-doomed house, along with her daughter and five young children.
The largest church in Fayetteville had become the city’s eighth official storm shelter.
As Sunday dawned grimly in the Carolinas, the heavens opened for the fifth straight day, swelling rivers past record-breaking levels and drenching already half-drowned towns. But, it being Sunday, the congregations were still at work in one of the most church-steeped parts of the country, even if many religious services were canceled because of flooded sanctuaries, dangerous roads and scattered parishioners.
From the first moments of the rolling disaster of Florence, there has been no sharp divide separating the official responders, the victims and the houses of faith.
The South Carolina governor’s office began a storm briefing with a chaplain talking of Elijah’s tests of faith.
The sole mosque in Burlington, N.C., has been open as a shelter, handing out water, food and blankets. So have other mosques from Georgia to Virginia.
The Southern Baptists have revved up their extensive response operation, preparing to cook tens of thousands of meals in mobile kitchens and deploying workers with chain saws and shower units to command posts along the coast.
“It’s easy to say, ‘I love God,’ but put on your boots, get your hands dirty,” said Jim Pennington, the senior pastor of Temple Church in flood-sunken New Bern, N.C., who spent much of Friday in a kayak, teamed up with a man in a flat-bottomed johnboat, paddling around and pulling about 30 people out of the water.
Temple was the command center for a 60-strong contingent from the North Carolina Baptist Men, the disaster-relief arm of the state Baptist Convention. They did have worship service on Sunday, such as it was: 80 people in a hall that is usually filled with more than a thousand, where big chunks of the roof had fallen in over the stage.
Before the service, about a dozen men in hard hats were helping assemble a food trailer in the parking lot. Jimmy Lawrence, a retired garage mechanic, stood at a picnic table, tracing a waterproof map. He pointed to parts of the town with the worst flooding and told a pair of fellow Baptist volunteers which neighborhoods to visit. He instructed them on how to assess homes for flood damage, and how to ask homeowners if they needed a tree cut or a home gutted.
Mr. Lawrence told the volunteers to tell any victims they encountered that they were not alone, that God was with them. He also warned the men about the second wave of flooding that was soon to come.
“This is not likely to be one of them fast-washin’-down-the-mountain things,” Mr. Lawrence said, echoing the calls for continued vigilance from public officials across the region. “In an hour or two, you might not be able to get out.”
Mr. Lawrence has been doing this kind of work for 20 years. “Our big thing is witnessing to the homeowner and telling them somebody’s here, that they’re not alone,” he said.
Florence, the hurricane turned tropical storm turned tropical depression, has prompted a week of intense prayer all over the coast, in the corners of crowded storm shelters and from the lecterns of top officials.
As the first harsh bands of rain began lashing Greenville, N.C., Asif Daher, 40, stood at the counter of his restaurant, Bateeni Mediterranean Grill, one of the few places in town that were still open. Food was free for anyone helping out with the hurricane, said Mr. Daher, a Palestinian immigrant, because the Quran defines the righteous as those “who give charity out of their cherished wealth to relatives, orphans, the poor, needy travelers, beggars,” and the like.
“It’s part of our religion to help wherever we are,” he said. There was a stack of Qurans in the corner, and a sign offering them for free as well.
As the storm moved over the central Carolinas, roughly 60 people gathered for a Saturday night dinner of chicken bog, sweet potatoes and green beans at the New Ebenezer Baptist Church in Florence, S.C.
“We are a church of action,” said Marcus Simmons, who oversees the evangelism ministry at the church, which had opened its recreation center as a shelter. “We believe that, unless we do it and show you that we mean what we said, then how can we even hold ourselves or hold you accountable?”
Nearly every statement had traces of metaphor: of the trials in life, of how troubles pass like storms, of churches as places of safe harbor.
“It’s important to remain one and pray as one, so that we can defeat any challenge that comes about,” said Luvia Grant, who was at New Ebenezer with her husband and seven children. “We’re stronger in numbers than we are apart.”
Some of those who rode out the storm had done so because they were sure they would be protected by their faith--only to find, as they sought rescue, that faith works in mysterious ways. Others saw proof in their deliverance.
Dian Edge told her family that God had instructed her in a dream to wait out Hurricane Florence in her little wooden farmhouse, surrounded by soybeans and peanut plants, down near the South Carolina coast. The storm came down, the contents of the freezer were emptied--sausage, turkey, rotisserie chicken--and by the light of kerosene lamps, the family bided their time.
Mike Edge, 22, kept vigil, his guns at hand; Meghan, 28, a granddaughter visiting from Boston, stayed in contact with the outside world on her laptop; Dian, 71, the matriarch, prayed and read Psalms aloud to the dark house as a wind-whipped sycamore tree tore at the roof.
“She’s reciting the Bible,” the younger Ms. Edge said by phone in the middle of the storm, “and keeps saying evil can’t penetrate God’s word.”
Florence, at least, did not penetrate their house, though the roof sustained considerable damage. The morning after, some members of the church brought the Edges a thermos of hot coffee and some ham sandwiches. The devotion does not let up with the weather.
Billy Layton, who moved to Lumberton nearly two years ago to rebuild flood-damaged houses with the North Carolina Baptists on Mission, was planning to move on by the end of the year.
He had been leading this nomadic lifestyle for nearly a decade, following disaster after disaster, and was ready to get to some long-delayed repairs on his own home. On Saturday night, with Lumberton looking more and more as though it would be flooded even more severely than it had during Hurricane Matthew, Mr. Layton contemplated the question he would soon face: whether to stay in the area on his now indefinitely prolonged mission.
“Probably would,” he said.
Still, on Sunday, as the rain continued to fall in torrents and the towns filled up, that was a question for later. At Manna Church, where the operation was humming with cheerful redshirted volunteers serving pasta and arranging air mattresses, there was little idea of what the next few days would bring. The church would take in as many people as they could, said Mr. Fletcher.
“And then come Sunday,” he said, as if considering the next week’s service for the first time, “we’ll wing it.”
