Palace of Supreme Purity

On page 400 of Gao Xingjian’s Soul Mountain, there’s a reference to a Palace of Supreme Purity. That’s such a Chinese name – how was it written in Chinese, I wondered.

The easiest way to find out would of course be to see how it was written in the book. But I don’t have a copy of the Chinese text, so I turn to the Internet.

My first find is this blog post, featuring the part of Soul Mountain I’m talking about:

Finding the name of the temple, though, was a little harder. It seems that this is the Qingcheng Mountain referred to - Mount Qingcheng, 青城山 - “a sacred Taoist mountain in Dujiangyan, Chengdu, Sichuan” according to Wikipedia here.

According to that page, Mount Qingcheng has a Shangqing Palace, though its doesn’t mention a Palace of Supreme Purity.

There is also a Tai Qing Gong (太清宮) or Temple of Supreme Purity on Laoshan in Shandong, though I don’t think that’s the one Gao is referring to. But at least that gives me a name to search for in Chinese.

I start with 太清宮 青城山, which doesn’t lead anywhere that looks relevant. But adding Gao’s name changes things. Searching for 太清宮 青城山 高行健 takes me to https://www.kanunu8.com/book3/7145/158442.html – and more or less the same extract from the book I found above. From this, it turns out that the name is 上清宫.

Would I translate that as “palace of supreme purity”? Probably not.

 شرکت Big 8، در سال 1986 تاسیس شد و در حال حاضر متعلق به سوپرمارکت های زنجیره ای Sobeys می باشد.

تاریخ

نام تجاری و شرکت Big 8، در دهه 1930 توسط Fenton و Fred Day  ایجاد شد، و اکنون متعلق به Sobeys است.

آنها نام کولای خود را Big 8 گذاشتند که قیمت آن هشت سنت برای یک بطری تقریباً یک لیتری بود.

شرکت کوکاکولا در سال 1946 می‌خواست شرکت Big 8، را بخرد،

اما آنچه را که صاحبان آن فکر می‌کردند ارزش شرکت را پرداخت نمی‌کرد.

سه ماه بعد شرکت Maritimes، قیمت مناسبی را ارائه کرد و شرکت Big 8، را خریداری کرد.

نام Big 8، برای مدتی استفاده نشد تا اینکه Maritime Beverages، که تحت آن 7Up، فروخته می شود،

برچسب را به طور رایگان به Sobeys، داد.

In recent years, Beijing has launched a number of projects aiming to improve water distribution across the regions, and introduced water-saving measures including the “sponge city” project designed to collect and recycle rainwater. Kyrgyzstan boasts more than 9,900 glaciers and eternal snows stretching over roughly 6,680 square kilometers, according to data based on satellite images from the United Nations Development Program. Glaciers make up about 3.3% of the total area of the country’s territory and contain, by various estimations, around 600 billion cubic meters of water.However, according to local media reports, the country also often faces water shortages due to inadequate water distribution and a lack of infrastructure, like technical water wells and drinking water reservoirs. Just last month, several neighborhoods in the capital Bishkek were subject to water rationing. Authorities claimed the problems were due to a particularly cool spring. Tasting: Imperial Grade Laoshan Green Tea

So this is the Imperial grade version of the Laoshan green tea I tasted earlier. Very similar is appearance to the classic version but the obvious differences came in the aroma and brewed tea.

The dry leaf had a fragrance of fresh cut grass, steamed broccoli and an aroma similar to the smell you get when opening a new bag of salted potato chips. A salty, cooked potato type of aroma, unlike the more roasted chestnut aroma of the classic version. The wet leaf revealed more of a sweet grass scent, with a cooked spinach type of aroma.

The brewed tea was quite thick and umami but not quite as flavorful as the classic. It really presented flavors of steamed spinach and a little bite similar to swiss chard. Further infusions had a similar flavor, but I noticed a very small note of the sweet grass I smelt on the wet leaf at the very end. The mouth feel and aftertaste was very much the same as actually eating steamed greens, especially slightly bitter greens like collards or swiss chard.

I can honestly say that I did not enjoy this version nearly as much as the classic. The flavor was lacking in my opinion and really left me unsatisfied. I found the flavor and aroma of this tea to me much more dull in comparison. My recommendation if you are into green teas and want to give Laoshan a try, go for the classic! 2 out of 5 star rating.
