Ballarat Underpinning
If you’re experiencing sloping floors, cracked walls or doors that won’t open and close properly in your Ballarat home, it may be time to call the experts. These problems are a sign of foundation damage and can quickly become costly structural issues if left untreated. You can avoid costly repairs by hiring a professional to perform underpinning, restumping and house reblocking in Ballarat.
The Ballarat Underpinning team is made up of experienced contractors who are capable of handling any underpinning job in Ballarat and surrounding suburbs. They have extensive experience in restoring damaged homes and offer competitive rates for all their services. They are dedicated to customer satisfaction and provide a comprehensive guarantee on all their work.
Civic engagement is a common feature of many universities in Australia, and the University of Ballarat is no exception. Its programs and policies focus on community outreach, a key goal of which is to help students develop a sense of social responsibility and commitment to the region.
To accomplish this, the Ballarat Underpinning program includes a range of activities that promote social interaction and learning. The program also helps students build life skills, such as problem-solving and communication. These skills will be useful in their future careers and for living in the community.
The university finances its civic engagement programs mainly through internally generated revenue and some financial assistance from independent organizations. This money is specifically intended to promote and facilitate linkages between the university and local communities. It is important to note that civic engagement is not an integral component of federal funding for higher education in Australia.
Visualising Ballarat is an online mapping application that enables locals to participate in the creation and management of spatially enabled data sets. It allows data custodians to retain ownership of their data and maintain control over access agreements, while at the same time ensuring that it is accessible to all users.
The project won the 2015 Victorian Spatial Excellence Award for People and Community. This award is given to initiatives that make a significant difference to national or regional issues via grassroots and community-based efforts. It also honours projects that demonstrate innovative approaches to data sharing and the use of digital technologies.
The project has received ethics approval from the University of Ballarat Human Research Ethics Committee and the Diocese of Melbourne Catholic Education Office. In addition, it has consulted with the Ballarat Line Upgrade (BLU) community advisory group and been reviewed by an external reviewer. It has a wide stakeholder profile, ranging from culturally heritage and historic townships, to rural agricultural and landcare groups, and forward-thinking councils. This stakeholder profile makes it an ideal environment to trial the stakeholder version 2.0 rating.
Precise Restumping & Underpinning successfully maintains a reputation for delivering quality, reliable and sound services to clients all over New South Wales, with a licensed builder that personally oversee all works.

Paving the Way to a Beautiful Yard: The Role of Hardscaping in Landscape Design
In the realm of landscape design, the term "hardscaping" often takes center stage. It's the backbone of outdoor creations, laying the foundation for stunning yards that seamlessly blend functionality with aesthetics. At Shoreline Landcare, serving the communities of Aurora, Naperville, Batavia, Sugar Grove, Plainfield, and beyond in Illinois, we understand the transformative power of hardscaping in landscape renovations and installations. Let's delve into the significance of hardscaping and how it can pave the way to your dream outdoor living space.
Tumblr media
Understanding Hardscaping in Landscape Design
Landscape design is an art form that harmonizes natural elements with man-made structures. While softscaping involves plants, trees, and other living elements, hardscaping deals with non-living features like paths, walls, and patios. Hardscaping provides the framework upon which the softer elements of landscaping can flourish. It adds structure, defines spaces, and enhances the overall appeal of outdoor environments.
The Benefits of Incorporating Hardscaping
Increased Functionality: Hardscaping elements such as brick patios, pathways, and retaining walls create functional spaces for. Whether it's hosting gatherings, enjoying a quiet moment alone, or simply navigating your yard with ease, well-designed hardscaping enhances usability.
Enhanced Aesthetics: Hardscaping adds visual interest and complements the natural beauty of your landscape. From elegant brick creations to intricately designed paver patterns, hardscaping elements contribute to the overall charm and curb appeal of your property.
Low Maintenance: Unlike softscaping, which requires ongoing care and maintenance, hardscaping features are durable and require minimal upkeep. This makes them an attractive option for homeowners seeking both beauty and practicality in their outdoor spaces.
Increased Property Value: A thoughtfully designed hardscape can significantly boost the value of your property. Potential buyers are often drawn to homes with well-designed outdoor living areas, making hardscaping a smart investment in the long run.
Tumblr media
Incorporating Hardscaping into Your Landscape Renovation
When it comes to landscape enhancement, Shoreline Landcare specializes in seamlessly integrating hardscaping elements into outdoor spaces. Our team of experienced professionals works closely with clients to bring their vision to life, whether it involves creating a cozy brick patio for outdoor dining or installing a stunning water feature as a focal point.
Initial Consultation: We begin by understanding your goals, preferences, and budget for the project. Our experts conduct a thorough assessment of your existing landscape and discuss various hardscaping options tailored to your needs.
Custom Design: Using cutting-edge design tools and techniques, we develop a custom hardscape plan that complements your property's architecture and enhances its natural surroundings. From selecting the right materials to optimizing space utilization, every detail is carefully considered.
Professional Installation: Our skilled craftsmen bring the design to life with precision and attention to detail. Whether it's laying intricate brick patterns or constructing sturdy retaining walls, we ensure that the hardscaping installation meets the highest standards of quality and craftsmanship.
Ongoing Maintenance: Once the hardscaping project is complete, we provide maintenance tips and guidelines to help you preserve its beauty for years to come. From periodic cleanings to minor repairs, our team is here to ensure that your hardscape continues to shine season after season.
In the world of landscape design, hardscaping plays a pivotal role in creating outdoor spaces that are both functional and visually stunning. From brick patios to retaining walls, hardscaping elements lay the foundation for beautiful yards that stand the test of time. At Shoreline Landcare, we specialize in turning outdoor dreams into reality, one landscape enhancement at a time. Contact us today at 630-551-5224 or email [email protected] to learn more about how hardscaping can pave the way to your own beautiful yard.

Climate Action Challenge – A Hilltop Approach
Hello my name is Wanda Osterman-Harris and I am a Hilltop resident.
I facilitated several official city of Denver Sustainability Task Force meetings this past year and wanted to continue to contribute my activism while many of their programs are on hold or have insufficient funding to continue to progress concerning Environmental topics.
Therefore, I have dedicated myself to an International Climate Action Challenge which begins in September and runs for 90 days. My goal is to provide thorough information about how residents can care for their property without toxic chemicals and to advocate to the Denver Department of Park and Recreation to make their Intergrated Pest Management Program more progressive. I want everyone living here to be confident in their health and safety and not need to worry about toxic runoff into waterways or needing to wonder whether their park was recently treated with toxic chemicals or synthetic fertilizers before going there.
My idea is to share practices for designing and maintaining Ecologically Beneficial Landscapes that surround us in our daily lives. Providing resources that can aid others in developing an Organic Land Care approach.  To have a dialogue around the following:
~ Defining Organic Landcare
~ Preferred, allowed and prohibited products
~ Precautionary Principles
~ Right Plant – right location (Plant Select)
Please consider reaching out to me to learn more about my initiative and the benefits of organic landcare practices.  I am seeking opportunities to present to groups interested in learning more. With your help I can continue to network and provide options to those wanting to change their currentmaintenance of their properties.  We can all make a difference- it is possible to live in a community without yellow pesticide signs on each lawn, without Roundup under park trees and synthetic fertilizers being sprayed through automated sprinklers.  Shifting how we think of managing gardens/lawns/turf is the first step to a healthier ecosystem. After all the term is land “care”- we should consider it as a holistic practice and not harm but rather aid it’s wellbeing for our own good.
For individuals willing to learn and communicate to others how Denver can “Go Pesticide Free” I have presentations available for you to share with RNOs, HOAs and government leaders.  Let’s join other communities across this nation in becoming a designated “non-toxic community”.  Please contact me at [email protected]

Clean Those Vacant Lots: A Neighborhood Anti-Crime Strategy That Works
While many criminologists advocate addressing the sociological roots of crime, such as racism, poverty and unemployment, two researchers claim that quicker and more cost-effective results might come from a (literally) more grassroots approach.
In a study published by the Manhattan Institute as part of its Urban Policy 2019 series, John M. Macdonald and Charles C. Branas found that a Philadelphia program to revitalize abandoned lots in the city’s blight-ridden neighborhoods resulted in “significant” reductions in shootings and assaults.
“Decisions about how and where cities invest resources in the abatement of vacant lots could have a greater influence on reducing crime than many realize,” they concluded.
The so-called Philadelphia LandCare (PLC) program began turning vacant lots into “pocket parks” in 1996, replacing rubbish-covered areas with fenced-in greenery, water fountains, barbecues, gardens, and swings. Local residents were paid to maintain the lots—weeding and mowing them twice-weekly during the growing season.
With research funding from the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the authors studied crime rates in the neighborhoods surrounding 500 lots, chosen randomly from the 12,000 urban spaces that had been transformed by the program up to 2008.
They found that between 1999 and 2008, shootings in those spaces went down by 8 percent, assaults with guns declined by 4.5 percent, and nuisance crimes such as public drinking and illegal dumping were down by 7 percent.
“The effects were even larger for neighborhoods below the poverty line, with the PLC treatment leading to a 29 percent reduction in gun assaults and a 28 percent reduction in nuisance crimes,” they wrote.
The authors also examined nearby areas to check if criminal activity had merely been displaced to other blocks that had not been “greened,” and found “no evidence of rising crime.”
“This was not surprising, as a review of studies of place-based interventions finds that they are about as likely to find a diffusion of crime reductions to nearby places, as they are to find displacement,” they wrote.
Charles Branas
”The opportunity to engage in crime facilitated by vacant lots may not easily be transferred to nearby places after lots have been cleaned and greened.”
Branas, professor of epidemiology and chairman of the Department of Epidemiology at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, and Macdonald, professor of criminology and sociology at the University of Pennsylvania, said their findings corroborated the work of other scholars who argue that “place”—more specifically, attention to environmental design— has a role in shaping crime.
Urban blight feeds a “spiral of decay” that exacerbates criminal activity, according to the theory, giving a signal to drug dealers and other offenders that they have a free pass to conduct their activities without fear of being impeded by police enforcement.
The PLC program, conducted in partnership with city officials and the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, was an attempt to reverse the deterioration in Philadelphia neighborhoods fueled by de-industrialization and the flight to the suburbs since the 1960s and 1970s.
Although some cities have been able to reverse the process with new investment, others like Philadelphia, Baltimore, Cleveland, and St. Louis have continued to see large tracts of land in their centers abandoned to urban blight, the authors said.
Philadelphia’s initial cleanup efforts were funded by the city, private philanthropy and local community organizations. The program uses a network of 18 organization which hire local landscape contractors, who in turn hire local residents to provide the upkeep—making the program a job generator.
Efforts to rehabilitate those tracts are relatively cheap: Sprucing up a typical lot costs between $1,000 and $1,300, and the upkeep amounts to about $150 a year.
“Our overall calculations suggest that $1 invested in the PLC program returns $26 in net benefits to taxpayers from reductions in gun violence, and as much as $333 in general costs to society, such as pain and suffering costs associated with a gun assault,” the authors said.
While the program may be comparatively low-cost at the micro-level, investing in a  city-wide cleanup program could run as much as $5 million, the study conceded. And that doesnt include addressing the more complex roots of deindustrialization and urban decay, such as fixing  potholed roads and improving public transit.
Nevertheless, the authors argue even small, incremental changes in the inner-city environment can have big consequences.
“Changing places is easier than changing people.”
Interviews with residents also suggested that the sustained efforts to maintain the lots and keep them attractive also fueled a sense of engagement, vigilance and commitment, which also may have played a part in steering away troublemakers.
Similar programs are now underway in Youngstown, Ohio and Flint, Mich. New Orleans and Chicago are also in the process of launching cleanups.
John M. Macdonald
The advantage of such programs is they “do not require large-scale structural investments from taxpayers,” the authors wrote.
“Given that crime and related problems are highly concentrated in the same places, this means that strategic planning can have large-scale population benefits.”
They continued: “Imagine a likely scenario where a hundred blocks in a city are responsible for 20 percent of all serious crime. Addressing blight on these blocks alone could translate into a 5 percent10 percent reduction in crime for the entire city.
“As a means of reducing crime and the fear that it creates in urban neighborhoods, changing places is often easier than changing people.”

Crazy where time actually wanders! We had great fortune a few months ago. We were the lucky recipients of a further 500 seedlings for one of our front regeneration projects from the Warren Catchments Council. This prompted us to think about our driveway and backyard here at Bellalee. After so much regeneration work elsewhere, it was time to look closer to home – near our hom3!
It didn’t take much to come around to the thought that we want to create a mini-forest. The driveway and backyard all brimming with beautiful flowing flowering trees, bushes and ground covers. The yard is about 1 acre and the house driveway 230 metres long and 3 metres wide on either side. Up the top of the drive up we have a remnant stand of trees which are delighted to have some grevillea and other plant brothers and sisters join them.
With great excitement and advice from Katanning Landcarewho provided hundreds of beautiful seedling plants that they grow and are all within South West Australia only. Plus more little beauties from a quick trip to Boyanup Botanical which is is a fabulous family-owned nursery with over 600 species of quality plants with a speciality in Australian natives. Plus Boyanup has a vast range of weekly specials (larger plants) for a minimal number of dollars. I have just turned 60 and am eager to see them established sooner rather than later. Yes, I also raid our local nursery Nightingalesfor some slightly bigger plants. Driving past – I simply must stop! We have planted just over 350 seedlings with more arriving on Friday.
What to do about the weeds. So many people say weed control is everything…. except three cases have gone against Monsanto and more than 13,000 are pending. It didn’t take much for us to say there must be other ways. Yes, they all involved sweat and time. Manual removal of the weeds close to the seedlings, we had added straw around them to give then a further buffer. Plus recently we added the tree guards from Warren Catchments Council. I was initially hesitant …. gravel….. sheetrock ….. and where has the topsoil gone ….. hard, hard hard. We are determined to make the world around us soft once again. Jorn made me a device to hit into the ground to make the holes for the cane sticks. Somehow he was always away when said work was being done…….. It was necessary as the birds and rabbits were thinking easy meal targets. They were not interested in the capeweed and ryegrass.
They are in and protected. We have promised to water our babies weekly for the first summer to help them get established. Plus I know more will be added.
Landcare doesn’t only apply to big projects, #landcare #driveway #pillarsofbeauty
