Bling!
Bling! http://wp.me/s1Fwcu-bling
Yesterday I went to the Lambousa Market, a large weekly market near to where we live, to pick up a silver bracelet I’d ordered from a friend who sells lovely jewellery.  I’d originally chosen a bracelet with peacocks engraved in it, but when I got there I decided to switch to one engraved with turtles.  It “felt” better when I put it on, and I liked the idea of it being representative of Mother…

Readers mail. St Andrews Church, Kyrenia
As always, Christmas 2019 was a busy time in St. Andrew’s Church as once more we celebrated the birth of our Saviour in Bethlehem over 2000 years ago.
Christmas banner by Gloria Tattersall
Presentation to Revd Mike
We began the season with a new idea: instead of the traditional Christmas Fair a stall was rented at the ever-popular Lambousa Saturday market for two weeks (30th November and 7th December) where several volunteers sold preserves, home baking, handcrafts and tickets for a delicious Christmas Hamper (which was won by our own Sally Birt). In addition, Gloria and Bryan Tattersall ran a tombola game where many excellent value prizes were won by those lucky enough to purchase the right tickets! A grand total of 5,320TL was raised, and sincere thanks are extended to all who supported us.
On Saturday 14th December St. Andrew’s welcomed members of the Nordic Community and friends to a traditional service conducted by Fr. Ingvar Hindenes from the Scandinavian church in Ayia Napa with music led by Jorun Sandvik. Those non-Nordic friends even managed to join in some of the (for them) better known carols. Following the service Birgitta welcomed members of the congregation to her house for a delicious lunch.
On the same day the British Residents Society (BRS) held their annual Christmas get-together in the Hall. So popular was the event this year that the kitchen staff ran out of mince pies and sausage rolls. Thankfully the mulled wine held up!
On Thursday 19th and Saturday 21st December passers-by were entertained by carol singing in Café George. As well as a good turn-out of singers from St. Andrew’s we were joined by several of George’s clientele who had stopped for refreshments and got more than they bargained for!
Fr. Edward Jervis celebrated and preached at the Midnight Mass, the First Communion of Christmas, on Christmas Eve to a large congregation, including many visitors who had joined us especially for the service.
On Christmas Day itself a wonderful Festal Eucharist took place where a full church was entertained and fascinated by the Acting Chaplain, the Revd Mike Graham, feeding brave members of the congregation from a tin of dog food! So convincing was this that at least one member of the congregation had to leave after feeling somewhat bilious! But everyone survived, including young Melissa who bravely volunteered to come forward to try the intriguing concoction. You had to be there to believe it!
The congregation on Christmas morning
The Revd Mike Graham’s final service
The following Sunday, 29th December, marked the end of the Revd Mike’s acting chaplaincy as he and Janet return to Ireland to try to once again begin their retired life together following the traumatic events of the past 20 months or so here in St. Andrew’s. But it was also a day of great joy as we welcomed the newest member of the congregation, Kendricks Chiedoziem Idoko into the Church.
Baby Kendrick’s proud parents and his big sister
Revd Mike baptises Kendricks Chiedoziem Idoko
We wish Kendricks every blessing as he begins his new life in Christ. The choir, under the Director of Music Earl Moffitt and supplemented by members of the Kyrenia Chamber Choir, led us in a magnificent choral setting which featured solos by Isioma Aguleba (known to us all as Izzy), Alan Carling, Susan Carling and Iris Langford.
The sanctuary party (and Izzy!), Christmas 2020
Following the service, a presentation of paintings by local artist Maxene Shailer was made to the Revd Mike and a delicious lunch served to those present.

By Chris Elliott…
Of all of the people we have met in Northern Cyprus we have been so impressed by Mr John Aziz Kent a TRNC Patriot, Father of North Cyprus Tourism and for his quest that the TRUTH of Cyprus be told so the world understands the whole issue.
For this reason we presented him with the CyprusScene.com award for his lifelong quest to achieve his aims.
John’s father Mehmet
John Aziz Kent was born in the Dillirga area of Cyprus on 15th May 1934 and was the son of Mehmet Zeybek and Fatma Muslu who had six children in all, three boys and three girls.
The area of Cyprus known as Dillirga is the poorest and least fertile part of Cyprus and the inhabitants were all looked down on as the poor inferior cousins of Cypriot Greeks and Turks alike.
John was named Cevdet but as he was a sickly child it was decided to change his name to Aziz Mehmet.  He lived in a house provided by CMC mines in the village of Skouridissa before being moved with his family by the company to Karadag (Lefke).
As the years rolled by John helped support his family by working in any way that he could and when his father was disabled in an accident at the CMC mines this had a lasting effect on him and he became very strong and ambitious.
In 1951 after forging his birth certificate to show he was nineteen he was recruited for training in Famagusta before being shipped to Egypt to help the British Forces with the defence of the Suez Canal.
Whilst there he fancied myself as a boxer and joined the Army boxing club and with hardly any training he learned the hard way and was put up against a top amateur heavyweight boxer who he was hardly able to hit. After losing the bout with a severe beating from his opponent, who was one of the best boxers in the army, he said to John “’My God you are a hard man to knock out”.
On his return to Cyprus there was very little work except in the Mines so he obtained a job with the Limni Mines Corporation in Polis where he worked underground in conditions which were terrible. As he spoke Turkish, Greek and English he was then given a job as an interpreter in the mining area.
The Cyprus mines
John in the early 50s
The Cyprus mines                                                                              John in the early 50s
From here he moved to CMC mines, in Karadağ, but following a layoff of many of the workforce John was able to go back to his old job as interpreter at Limni Mines Corporation in Polis where he was trained to use explosives and put in charge of the dynamite stock and was promoted to Foreman.
By now the Cyprus troubles started by the Greek Cypriots had accelerated and Turkish Cypriots felt very vulnerable and he joined a defence group called Volkan. He managed to persuade a bunch of young men to join with him and he became their leader in that part of Cyprus in the town of Polis.
He also met Captain Lionel Savery in Lefke who was the British Chief of the Intelligence Service in Cyprus and was asked to help them.
With the passage of time John became known as a leading representative in defending the Turkish Cypriots and with threats being made to kill him and a number of his friends being killed he left for the UK.
On arrival in the UK after looking for work John got a job in a laundry loading the huge laundry machines and after a series of other jobs, needing to earn more money, he worked for a while at weekends washing dishes at Lyons Corner House in the Strand.
Birds of a Feather show with John his son Gordon and Valerie his wife on the right
After working hard and earning money and investing in buying properties, John was introduced to Soho and wanted to be a part of it. His opportunity came when he was able to buy “Au Refuge” (“Sanctuary” – registered as a members’ drinking club). As his business developed he changed this club into a discotheque and now opportunities arose and he opened a number of other clubs and eventually owned The Celebrity in Clifford Street.
Then it was time to think about returning to his homeland and  the idea of him building a hotel in Lapta seemed incredible to his friends. Hotel business was not a Turk’s business and not in Lapta itself. On a day John and his friends went to the Baspinar ancient spring to entertain themselves, the Greeks did not behave well towards them. The grocers in the village and then at the restaurant by the spring had all shown their dislike towards them as Turkish Cypriots.
All Turkish villages in the countryside were besieged by the Greeks. Thousands of Turks had left their homes and taken refuge in other areas. Many Turks were kidnapped and nothing more was heard of them. As a result of the prevailing situation, only a few jobs were allocated to Turks.
But John Aziz Kent was determined to put his aspirations into practice. He felt himself compelled to do so by his love for his homeland. He was going to restore the glories of ancient days which had once enlightened these lovely shores.
After many difficulties he eventually managed to move his construction of the Celebrity Hotel forward in 1974 and this was followed by Chateau Lambousa Hotel and its Bungalows and he then started marketing holidays through his own travel agency and as the years rolled forward he started the TRNC Hoteliers Association and is still their Honorary Founding President.
Valerie and John Aziz Kent
Time to celebrate
Valerie and John Aziz Kent                                                      Time to celebrate
As the founding father of Turkish Cypriot Tourism it’s no surprise that he has remained an outspoken critic of what needs to be done to improve tourism despite the unfair embargo placed on his country and he says if the TRUTH of Cyprus is told and accepted, then the TRNC will be recognised and with the world it can move in peace and harmony.
John has never forgotten his Cypriot roots in the Dillirga area of Cyprus and is the founder of the International Cyprus Turkish Dillirga Association which was founded in 2018 and has around 25,000 members.
Perhaps it’s appropriate that John Aziz Kent summarises his life’s work as follows.
Front and centre .. John Aziz Kent at the founding of the International Cyprus Turkish Dillirga Association
“On reflection, if I had concentrated my efforts on my businesses in London I would have been extremely wealthy now, instead of in debt, but I had this crazy notion of wanting to do something for the Turkish Cypriot community and I am still doing it.”
The CyprusScene.com award to John Aziz Kent By Chris Elliott... Of all of the people we have met in Northern Cyprus we have been so impressed by Mr John Aziz Kent a TRNC Patriot, Father of North Cyprus Tourism and for his quest that the TRUTH of Cyprus be told so the world understands the whole issue.

A very BIG Thank you from all of the KAR cats and dogs to Slimming World Catalkoy
They have raised a fantastic 2300TL for KAR.
Their support is so very much appreciated and the money is so needed – especially now that the summer heat has hit. Many people maybe do not realise that the center is not on mains water – every drop that we use (for cleaning, animal drinking, etc) has to come up in tankers – what a lot it costs us every couple of days!
Thank you slimmers – your loss is KAR’s gain.
Bara Brith
8 oz/200g Sultanas 8 oz/200g Self Raising Flour 4 oz/100g Demerara Sugar 1 egg 1 cup Cold Tea

We’re waiting!!!!
Comments from new volunteers at the centre
I recently had the privilege to help out at KAR (Kyrenia Animal Rescue at Arapkoy). The dedication of the entire team is incredible. Bearing in mind with nearly 300 dogs, 10 puppies and 44 cats. All pens are bleached, cleaned and hosed down daily. Dogs and cats fed. Clean water, treats and toys. The work involved is a huge task and costs over 40, 000TL per month.
This month alone they had over 100 visitors and 230 dogs walked. People from all over including residents and holidaymakers walk the dogs, donate, sponsor and rehome these lovely animals.
Anyone can go up to the centre between 9.00am and 1.00pm to walk dogs or just visit to talk to the dogs. They have recently built a lovely safe enclosure where you can take the dogs in a shady area to play.
KAR also desperately need more volunteers to help out at the reception centre. If you have just 4 hours a week this would be a great help to the centre.
I feel honoured to have met with the lovely people who come up to visit and walk dogs and to work with such loving caring people.
RED is 6/7 weeks old
Red is still waiting,  and will be vaccinated and neutered by KAR.
  He is beautiful little boy!
Happy birthday Derya :
Lots of love from all the cats you have helped xx
  BE AWARE:
At least 2 dogs poisoned and found dead this morning (10th July).

Thank you to the friends and family of Maaike Bausch.
Who donated 955TL in her memory.
It is gratefully received in her memory from all at KAR.

Wish good morning from Milli (ex cacey) as we adopted June 14th from KAR.

Exciting! Our Brand New Venue For Events 2019!!!!
Thank you to Hayal and all the staff at the The Fez for offering to host some of our fund raising events this year.
We are kicking off this year with a brand new Quiz Night, based on the TV Show ‘Tenables’.
We look forward to seeing you!!!
Bombay style chicken
10 oz split red lentils 3 oz onion – chopped 1 hot green chilli pepper 2 tsp cumin seeds – ground ½ tsp turmeric 1 tsp fresh ginger – finely chopped 2 ½ pts water 3 lb chicken portions – skinned 2 ½ tsp salt 2 tbs olive oil 1 tsp cumin seeds – whole 4 cloves garlic – chopped ½ tsp cayenne pepper 2 tbs lemon juice ½ tsp sugar
Combine lentils, onion, chilli, cumin, turmeric, half the ginger and water into a big pot. Bring to a simmer, cover leaving lid slightly ajar, and cook on low heat for 45 mins. Add chicken and salt. Mix and bring back to boil – cover. Reduce heat, simmer for 25/30 minutes until chicken is tender. Heat oil in small pan over medium heat. When hot put in whole cumin seeds. When seeds begin to sizzle [a few seconds] add remaining ginger and garlic. Fry until garlic turns lightly brown. Add cayenne, lift pan immediately and pour its entire contents into the pot with the chicken. Add lemon juice and sugar, stir and cook on medium heat for 5 mins. Garnish and serve with rice.
Mr Wilson left our Rescue Center in June 2018 to live in Germany.
Since then he has become quite the seasoned traveller and has also learnt some new skills.  We recently had an update.
” Dear Kim, remember Mr. Wilson? He went to his new home almost a year ago. He likes man-trailing, ice cream and going on road trips with his favourite humans Rebecka and Fred. This year he went to France, Spain and Corsica. Oh, what an amazing life one can have!”
Mantrailing is something we hear of often from our Germany adopted dogs and Stefi explained a little.
” Mantrailing is a kind of training where the dog uses the individual scent of a person to find him/her, walking more or less precisely on the path the human used. The cue at the start for the dog is e.g. a sock or something else this human was wearing. At the end this person waits (sometimes hidden) and then the dog receives a treat. This is a very simplified explanation”
What a fun way to bond with your dogs, exercise them, and also encourage them to use their natural skills.
Happy man-trailing Mr Wilson and all of the other KAR dogs who are enjoying their “furever” lives all across the world. Don’t worry. Be happy.
More info can be found on https://mantrailingscentdogs.co.uk/
Our book stall at Lambousa Market is in need of replenishing.
The stall is a huge part of our organization, so please empty those bookshelves for us. English and
Turkish titles, including fiction, childrens, non fiction, classics and biographies.
You can drop off at Karakum Office/Gladrags or if on the West side, direct to the stall on a Saturday morning.
Whey Hey!!! the Quiz Team have been winning again……
Thank you ‘Not a Clue’ 844.80TL. If you aren’t aware, this team attend quiz nights and donate any and all cash winnings to KAR.
Well done brain-boxes.
Thank you!
Thank you Sylvi for your kind donation of specialist cat food for two vulnerable centre cats!

Ahhhhh look, it’s our little Dimple,
She has been at the centre for 9 years, can anyone offer her a home in her latter years, someone to love and someone to love her.
We like to share the achievements of our supporters.
Lucy and her family are long time donators and sponsors of KAR. Lucy has written her first book and it has been reviewed by children of KAR staff and we are told it is very good.
Please support Lucy as she supports us. AMAZON.CO.UK
