The Harder They Fall (2021) Review
Tumblr media
Are we some kinda cowboy squad!??
Plot: When an outlaw discovers his enemy is being released from prison, he reunites his gang to seek revenge.
It’s no secret that the western genre has always been overpopulated by characters (and actors that played them) of white skin colour. That was understandable since at that time and setting in America racism was still very much prominent, so people of darker skin colour were unfortunately pushed away into the shadows, resented and looked down upon. However in comes The Harder They Fall, a revisionist western featuring a entire principal cast that are all Black. The movie too makes an effort to underline that though it is a work of fiction, all these characters did indeed exist at some point in the 19th century American West. The fictional element comes in the fact that these cowboys, lawmen and outlaws most likely never met each other in their lives and this story narrative never occurred. But this movie in turn takes these characters and puts them all into this one tale of woe so as to give an opportunity for actors of darker skin colour to play around in a genre they usually would never be able to be in, unless they are Jamie Foxx who walks around town guns a’ blazin’ saying “the D is silent!”. Straight up what I liked was that this movie never makes a big deal about its revisionist nature. Minus one tiny segment featuring a literal white town, the movie plays out like a typical western revenge story, a no brainer there cause let’s be honest, every western movie is about some sort of revenge. People loved to revenge back then. It was basically a nationwide hobby! So its a story of revenge, and the movie plays out as such, and it doesn’t try to go above and beyond of making a racial or political commentary. It’s simply that the cast just happens to be of colour, and I liked that. We currently live in a world where every single piece of medium must have some kind of political agenda behind it, but in the case of The Harder They Fall, it’s simply a bunch of talented actors who wanted to play some cowboys.
The Tarantino influence is fairly evident in this picture. There's a lot of stylized violence and the soundtrack is updated for a modern day hip-hop, reggae experience, which, don’t get me wrong, that soundtrack is ace and especially the Jeymes Samuel remix of “Here I Come” was absolutely the type of badassery you’d want to hear from a western. However in wanting to be too much like Tarantino the movie inadvertently falls a little short, as the script is nowhere as powerful nor memorable as a Tarantino script, nor is the visual palette as striking as that of Django Unchained or The Hateful Eight. Also, the movie tries to paint every single character in it as a badass. Every character needs to go about and say some kind of monologue that shows of their badass qualities, and then that is followed by them being a badass left and right, and look, I like seeing me some badasses being badass, but this was just too much badass in one! It’s always more interesting to watch characters with various layers, and as such you need more powerful characters and then more weaker ones to balance things out. But nope, each character in this movie acts super cool and edgy, and I guess it does underline the more fictional fantastical nature of the movie, but as such it makes for all the characters to be very one-dimensional. Basically the movie very much relies upon you actually liking the actors that are playing the characters, as any real personality comes off from them, not from the hollow written characters. Luckily though, the cast are all very game, with it being hard to pick a true stand out from the likes of Idris Elba, Regina King and LaKeith Stanfield just to name a few. I’d say I also very much enjoyed Jonathan Majors’ charm and charisma in the leading role, however I must say he does murmur his lines way too much that me and my fiancée had to put on subtitles so as to understand what he was saying. That’s no offence to the actor, and probably more due to our weak weak ear sockets!
All in all The Harder They Fall is a very fun western that has good music, an energetic cast and simply exists to please its audience. Nothing more, nothing less.
Overall score: 6/10
