In the Beginning
Welcome to Greg & Kim’s Irish Golf Adventure! If you’re reading this, you have successfully entered one of the longest url’s on the web, irishgolfadventure.tumblr.com!! I’m writing this one week prior to our departure on Sunday April 30th. We are busy preparing for our trip which will take us first to Boston and then on to Dublin, Ireland. We will be flying overnight so we’ll arrive at 8:30a on Monday May 1st.
I’m not really sure how many will be following our trip, I’m assuming our family will be checking in quite often and a few of our friends who are avid golfers or just curious travelers! I’ll be trying to post text and pictures every day and possibly a few videos too. I think Kim is a little anxious about how smoothly things will go since I have planned and booked the entire trip. She knows how detailed of a person I am...not... so we’ll see if I was able to rise to the occasion and surprise her with a flawlessly planned and executed 30 days! Probably just jinxed myself with that last comment!
Our trip starts and ends in Dublin. And for 29 days we will be traversing Ireland by driving mostly along the coast. We will be heading north out of Dublin and traveling counter clockwise around the entire country. That sounds like a lot of driving but Ireland is really only about the same land mass size as Indiana. Just configured quite a bit differently. And with roadways that are much narrower and winding than what you would find in Indiana which makes driving times much longer to cover distances than normal in the U.S.
Here is a summarized version of our golf agenda. I’ll leave accommodations and non golf info for the daily blogs.
May 2 - Royal County Down - Ireland Rank #1 World Ranking #1
May 3 - Ardglass Golf Club - Recommended by my new best friend, Tom Coyne, the author of A Golf Course Named Ireland.
May 4 - Portstewart Golf Club - Rank #21
May 5 - Royal Portrush - Rank #5 World Ranking #8
May 7 - Rosapenna - Old Tom Morris - Rank #32
May 8 - Rosapenna - St. Patrick’s - Rank #3
May 9 - Rosapenna - Sandy Hills - Rank #12
May 11 - Enniscrone - Rank #15
May 12 - Carne - Rank #14
May 13 - Strandhills Rank - Rank #39
May 14 - County Sligo Golf Club (Rosses Point) - Rank #8 World Ranking #91
May 15 - Doonbeg - Trump International - Rank #9
May 17 - Lahinch - Rank #3 World Ranking #31
May 18 - Tralee - Rank #16
May 19 - Ballybunion (Old Course) - Rank #2 World Ranking #17
May 21 - Hogs Head - Rank #40
May 23 - Old Head - Rank#17 World Ranking #68
May 25 - Island Course - Rank #7
May 26 - County Louth - Rank #10
May 28 - Portmarneck - Rank #4 World Ranking #40
Twenty rounds in tweny nine days. Hope my back holds up! We have caddies for all of our rounds so that will help. If the average round of golf is a 5-6 mile walk, looks like I’m going to put somewhere between 100 - 120 miles on these 69 year old legs in the month of May. Let’s hope it’s not as John Feinstein’s book is titled, A Good Walk Spoiled!!
Look forward to writing all about this trip as we go and hope you will enjoy reading it. My next blog post will be May 1st. Please feel free to comment and send the blog post url to anyone who might be interested in tagging along!! gb

Golfing in Ireland
Every year tens of thousands of people make a pilgrimage to Scotland to hack their way around such famous golf courses as St Andrews, Turnberry, and Gleneagles. But only the tiniest portion of them take the trouble to cross the Irish sea to try their hand on the courses of Eire. It's an unfortunate oversight. Golfing in Ireland is a splendid experience. The courses may not be as historic as in Scotland, but the better ones are every bit as beautiful and challenging – and occasionally even more so they also tend to be less crowded and almost always are cheaper, especially when you consider that green fees in Ireland are per day rather than per round.
Ireland has 180 courses, compared with Scotland's 400. Two in particular, Lahinch and Killiney, are notable, partly because they are very beautiful as well as challenging and partly because their settings offer a number of alternative attractions for any nongolfers in your party.
Lahinch, lying along the Atlantic coast in County Clare, is an old course with an easy-going air – a fact that becomes evident as soon as you try to consult the barometer hanging just inside the clubhouse door. Where the hands should be is instead a simple note saying: “See Goats” – a reference to the small herd cropping the grass just outside. If the goats are standing on the hilltop you can count on fine weather, if they are clustered near the clubhouse, expect rain. The Old Course, founded in 1892 by the members of a Scottish army regiment, is a links course – that is, one built on a sandy plain along the sea, where the fairways can be nearly as rough as a North American rough and the roughs are simply unspeakable. To call it a challenging course would be putting it mildly. Playing here is an experience that wavers between the exhilarating and the intimidating with long periods of deep confusion in between. The ocean provides not only scenic grandeur, but also whipping winds that can carry the trueist of drives halfway to Limerick, and the cliffs are a constant invitation to suicide, especially when you encounter such challenges at the 156-yard, par 3 hole with a completely blind green. Take along a club to break or confine your activities to the shorter, easier New Course.
For a complete contrast, there's the Killarney Golf and Fishing Club, on the outskirts of the town of Killarney. It has two championship courses, Mahony’s Point and the slightly longer Killeen. Although both are formidable, you may feel on more equal terms with them since both are park courses, more similar in layout to those of America. The real appeal here is that they are two of the most spectacularly beautiful courses in the world. Both spread out amid woodlands along the banks of Lough Leane with a verdant backdrop of mountains. The biggest challenge is to maintain your concentration amid such awesome scenery.
Green fees in Ireland range from about £4-£8 a day and clubs rent for about £5. Most courses are very easy to get on (weekends excepted), but it's worth checking to be sure that there aren't any tournaments or events that would keep you from getting a starting time. The Irish Tourist Board produces a very useful Visitors’ Guide to Irish Golf Courses.

Lahinch Golf Club Is a Storied Course That Avoids the Spotlight
For the well-traveled golfer, Lahinch Golf Club hardly needs a formal introduction.
The quirky, charming links along Ireland’s west coast welcomes thousands of visitors each year from around the globe, many of whom return annually for the golf and the ambience of the adjoining village. Various course rankings perennially place Lahinch among Ireland’s top four. Instant Cash Loans
Oddly, though, for all its renown, Lahinch never hosted its nation’s premier tournament. That void gets rectified this week, as the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open introduces the casual golf fan to a locale long cherished by connoisseurs.
“When they see what we have to offer,” said Paddy Keane, Lahinch’s general manager, “it’ll be on their bucket list to visit for the next few years. 东方财富网:财经门户,提供专的财经、股票、行情、证券、基金、理财、银行、保险、信托、期货、黄金、股吧、博客等各类财经资讯及数据 ”
Keane expects about 80,000 people at the course and village during the tournament. Lahinch has opened its fairways to only two professional events before, the last in 1975.

A Surfer on the Golf course
Dennis really wanted to treat himself to a round of golf at a good course in Ireland. We were near Old Head Golf Links near Kinsale which is supposed to be spectacular jutting out into the Atlantic. However they were booked with tournaments the whole week we were there. Near us now is the Lahinch Golf Club where the Irish Open was just played. But they were booked with tournaments too! Enter the small executive links course right here in town! I decIded since it was an exec course to play too! It was VERY windy as we started out. Even though it wasn’t Old Head, it was a beautiful links course (no trees). We played with the ocean in front of us, cows behind us, and the Cliffs of Moher to the left of us. As we were playing, a guy came walking right by us, through the course, carrying a gigantic surf board- not something one expects to see while golfing! Evidently, with the Cliffs helping to create enormous waves, make it a very popular spot for serious (Hawaii like) surfers! And being that it is casual Doolin, strict adherence to golf etiquette, is not the way. You want to surf but the golf course is in your way, no problem- just walk on through! We had dinner at Oars, a beautiful small restaurant here in Doolin. I had sole with capers in a lemon butter sauce, Dennis did not want to leave Ireland without having lamb with a cream mint sauce. Both, outstanding ( he said it was the best he ever had)! We learned from the owner, Kieran, that he only uses fish caught that day. He talked about the growing new food scene all over Ireland- not just in the big cities! We can attest to that! Another beautiful day and night in Doolin!

Jon Rahm is back in the winner’s circle
Professional
The 2016 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club was a mental examination with only four players finishing under par after day four. Jon Rahm played in this event as an amateur and finished tied twenty third. Rahm impressed at the 2016 U.S. Open when he won the low-amateur award. He turned professional shortly after and this article will review his biggest wins on both the DP World Tour & PGA Tour.
Torrey Pines
Rahm finished second at 2016 RBC Canadian Open which claimed his PGA Tour card for the 2016/2017 season. Rahm first found his love for Torrey Pines when he won the 2017 Farmers Insurance Open. He held an extremely long putt on the 18th green for an eagle as this putt confirmed his first victory on the PGA Tour. After this win he shot up in the world rankings to 46 which meant he qualified for the majors in 2017. The win confirmed that Rahm is a special talent and this was the first time that he came on my radar in the world of golf.
2017
Farmers Insurance Open was not the only tournament that Rahm won in 2017. He won in Europe at the 2017 Dubai Duty Irish Open on The Strand Course at Portstewart. This victory showed that Rahm has the game to win all over the world regardless of the course or weather conditions. The Irish Open was Rahm’s first win on the European Tour and he won the title of Rookie of the year in 2017.
2018
Rahm won his national open in 2018 at Centro Nacional de Golf. The Open de Espana was his second win on European Tour. I had the pleasure to play that course at 2022 ISPS Handa Spanish Open earlier this year. Rahm shot 20 under for four rounds and this win was significant regarding his development as a professional. He also won another event in 2018 when he won Hero World Challenge which was hosted by Tiger Woods in December 2018.
2019
His best finish on the PGA Tour in 2019 was at the Zurich Classic at New Orleans. Rahm teamed up with Texan Ryan Palmer to win the double format tournament at New Orleans. He also had success in 2019 on European Tour when he won the Irish Open for a second time at Lahinch. Rahm shot a fantastic final round of 62 showing again that he is one of the best players in the world. Rahm kept his best performance to the DP World Tour Championship in 2019 when he won the final event of the season. Rahm was ranked world number three at the end of 2019.
2020/2021
Rahm continued to win the biggest events and on the toughest courses throughout the covid-19 pandemic in both 2020 &2021. Having no crowds did not affect Rahm as he won the 2020 Memorial Tournament at Jack Nicklaus Muirfield Village. He went to world number one after his win at Memorial. Rahm continued his dominance in 2020 when he beat Dustin Johnson in a play-off at the BMW Championship. Rahm hung around at Torrey Pines at 2021 U.S. Open for three rounds and holed two extraordinary putts to win his first major on the final day.
2022
Rahm struggled with the flat stick in 2022 but found his game to win the Mexico Open earlier this Summer. He ran through the field at the final day of 2022 BMW PGA Championship to shoot 62. Rahm brought his good form into Open de Espana which took place from Thursday 6th to Sunday 9th October 2022. Rahm was back to his best over the weekend with shooting two rounds of 65 &62 to win the 2022 Open de Espana by six shots. Rahm is currently 10th in the DP World Tour Rankings and still has a great chance of winning the DP World Tour with five events left in the season.

Final golf game so final golf post. Played Lahinch Golf Links today.....wonderful course during which we experienced wild winds, driving rain, wild winds, sunshine, moderate winds (when begins the hills).... and a few other varieties of wind. Taking a caddie here is a necessity as one feature is quite a few blind shots.... even a par 3 where you can't see the flag. Playing well helps you like a course... so 31 points means I like it. I'd highly recommend it to golfers though standard conditions are a 2 club breeze (we had a 4 club breeze.... shots into a 120m par 3 required you to play a 170m club). My playing partners (Kev: 22; Jake: 14) had tough days but enjoyed the course. Our caddie thinks we fade the ball on purpose.... which is a dangerous feature with this strong wind.... being told to aim 45 degrees away from the hole at the beach so the ball comes back to the green.... it's a hard thing to convince yourself to do. The goats pic is our caddie (Jonah) with the course mascots. Afterwards went for a stretching walk along beach front.... this is a popular surfing town. Plenty of waves today but not the surfing variety.... and still locals swim... after all it's summer and the water and air are both a invigoration 18 deg C. Previous night saw 2 versions of Irish Traditional music in pubs.... very odd as totally disconnected from crowd.... seems to be more background music rather than something to get into... OK for a while but naturally most of the music is 'foreign' to us. Still good that live music is supported.

Situated in the Southwest of Ireland, District Kerry, the course is 65 miles from Shannon and presents an exquisite drive to arrive. The town of Ballybunion invites with a sculpture of President Clinton in the full golf swing. Situated in a space known as the Nursery of Ireland, in a space of plentiful natural life, the course is viewed as Europe's response to Augusta. On An Island
We had another great weather day in Ireland. Sunny, mid 60′s with a light wind. I was telling the two gentlemen I was playing with this morning that in 17 rounds of golf we have been rained on less the a total of eight or nine holes. And that rain wasn’t a driving rain but just a spitting rain as they call it around here. Really unbelievable!
The Island Course where I played today was about a 30 minute drive from our hotel. I tee’d off with two guys from Toronto Canada and they sported low handicaps (4 & 3). They were great guys and put up with my below average play today. The Island Course was a lot like Lahinch, spray the ball and you either lose your ball or have to hack your way out of some difficult lies. Guess what, I was all over the place with my driver. Never saw a par until the 11th hole!
Carded a sweet 101, second highest score of my trip but played from 6300+ yards. I shot a 46 on the back nine. You do the math on the front. It was a brutal display of golf. My playing partners struggled too. Each one of them had one birdie but my guess is if they counted all their shots, one was in the mid 80′s and the other was in the high 80′s. It was a tough course. The par 14th with dunes on the left and Ocean OB on the right had a 14 yard wide fairway at the widest part. Seven yards wide at the narrowest with absolutely no rough. I hit my drive in the heather on the left, chopped my way to lighter heather and then hit what seemed to be my only good shot of the day, a six iron to four feet and shockingly made the putt for the only other par of the day!!
After finding my way back to our hotel. I had a Guinness and tried to rationale how my round wasn’t that bad:-) You know how golf is, I can’t wait to correct all my errors tomorrow as we play County Louth Golf Club.
Stats Summary thru 17 rounds
Total Score - 1609
Total Holes - 315
Total Yards Played - 108,208
Total Pars or Better - 8 Birdies & 74 pars
Lost Balls - 42
Steps Walked - 235,922
Miles Walked - 117.50
Green Fees - $4197
Caddie Fees - $1330 plus tips
Coming down the home stretch and it looks like our weather is going to hold. And I know I have one more mid 80′s round in me:-) Hope springs eternal!! gb
