What Is The Significance Of Laghu Rudra Puja?
When all else fails, several turn to the divine powers for a way of solace, redemption or happiness. In Hinduism, there are several pujas and rituals each with benefits specific to their methodology contributing towards a particular reason. One such puja, conducted at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi is the Laghu Rudra Puja. The laghu rudra puja is said to be beneficial for those suffering from the ill-effects of the moon in their horoscope charts, leading to diseases and ill health, unstable relationships, and diminishing career growth.
The best time to perform this puja is believed to be in Shravan month, which is regarded to be a highly auspicious month for Lord Shiva. Apart from this month, Mondays too can be considered as they are regarded to be the Lord’s favourite day.  Over the course of the puja, the devotees are expected to perform an Abhishek, or a ritual where they are to wash the deity, with water from the Ganges and milk. They are also expected to chant the Vedic hymn named Sri Rudram, which is among the oldest recitation of the Lord Shiva’s various names. While chanting this particular hymn, several attributes and the benevolence of the Lord is invoked and worshipped. In fact, chanting and listening to the Sri Rudram is considered to be a blessing by itself, by several devotees of the Lord.
Eleven recitations of the Sri Rudram, followed by one recitation of the chamakam constitutes on Ekadasa Rudram recitation. Eleven Ekadasa Rudram recitations constitute one Laghu Rudram. Thus, over the course of the puja process, devotees are expected to chant this hymn as many times to complete the ritual. The entire puja can take up to 6 hours, and involves over 9 priests. With the pandemic continuing to loom upon us, online pooja is the way to go while considering remedy pujas such as the Laghu Rudra puja. Online puja portals offer this puja in tandem with the Kashi Vishwanath temple, making it easier for several people to access it even as they stay home, safe from the clutches of the pandemic.

Shiv Abhishek - TemplePurohit.com Below is given the philosophy of Shiv Abhishek - "Alankaarapriyo Vishnuh, Abhishekpriyah Shivah" - Vishnu is very fond of Alankaar (fine dress, beautiful ornaments, etc); Shiv is fond of Abhishek." In Shiv temples, a pot made up of copper or brass with a hole in the centre is kept hanging over the image or Ling of Shiv, and water falls on the image throughout day and night. Pouring over the Ling, water, milk, ghee, curd, honey, cocoanut water, Panchaamrit, etc, is called Abhishek. Abhishek is done for Shiv. Rudram is chanted along with the Abhishek. Shiv is propitiated by Abhishek. Shiv drank the poison that emanated from the ocean and wore the Gangaa and the Moon on his head to cool His head. He has the fiery third eye. Constant Abhishek cools this eye too. The greatest and the highest Abhishek is to pour the waters of pure love on the Aatm Ling of the lotus of the heart. The external Abhishek with various objects will help the growth of devotion and adoration for Shiv and eventually lead to internal Abhishek with pure abundant flow of love. Abhishek is a part of Shiv Poojaa. Without Abhishek, worship of Shiv is incomplete. During Abhishek Rudra, Purush Sookt, Chamakam, Mahaa Mrityunjaya Jap, etc, are chanted in a particular rhythm and order. Monday is very important day for Shiv and the 13th day of the fortnight ( Pradosh) is very sacred. On these days, devotees of Shiv worship him with special Poojaa, Abhishek with Ekaadash Rudra, Archanaa, offering plenty of Prasaad, and illumination. In Ekaadash-Rudram Abhishek, every Rudram is chanted with distinctive articles for Abhishek. Gangaa water, milk, ghee, honey, rose-water, coconut water, sandal paste, Panchaamrit, scented oil, sugarcane juice and lime juice are made use of for Abhishek. After every Abhishek, pure water is poured over the head of Shiv Ling. When Rudra is recited only once, the different articles of Abhishek are made use of after every stanza of the Rudram. The Abhishek water or other articles used for Abhishek are considered very sacred and bestow immense benefits on the devotees who take it as the Lord's Prasaad. It purifies the heart and destroys countless sins. You must take it with intense Bhaav and faith. When you do Abhishek with Bhaav and devotion, your mind is concentrated. Your heart is filled with the image of the Lord and divine thoughts. You forget your body and its relation and surroundings. Egoism gradually vanishes. When there is forgetfulness, you begin to enjoy and taste the eternal bliss of Shiv. Recitation of Rudram or "Om Namah Shivaaya" purifies the mind and fills it with Sattwa. If you do Abhishek with Rudra Paath in the name of a person suffering from any disease he will be soon freed from that disease. Incurable diseases are cured by Abhishek. Abhishek bestows health, wealth, prosperity, progeny, etc. Abhishek on Monday is most auspicious. By offering Panchaamrit (a mixture of honey, milk, yogurt, Ghee, Gangaa Water), to the Lord, thoughts about your body diminish. Selfishness slowly vanishes. You derive immense joy. You begin to increase your offerings unto the Lord. Therefore, self-sacrifice and self-surrender come in. Naturally, there is an outpouring from your heart, "I am Thine, my Lord. All is Thine, my Lord." Kannappa Nayanar, a great devotee of Shiv, a hunter by profession, did Abhishek with the water in his mouth for the Ling at Kaalaahastee in South India and propitiated Shiv. Shiv is pleased by pure devotion. It is the mental Bhaav that counts and not the outward show. Shiv said to the temple priest : "This water from the mouth of Kannappa, my beloved devotee, is more pure than the water of the Gangaa". A devotee should be regular in doing Abhishek for the Lord. He should get Rudram and Chamakam by heart. Ekaadash Rudra is more powerful and effective. In Northern India, every man or woman takes a lots of water and pours it on the image of Shiv. This also causes beneficial results and brings about the fulfillment of one's desire. Abhishek on Shiv Raatri day is very effective. May you all recite Rudra Paath which describes the glory of Shiv and his manifestations in every living being, in every animate and inanimate being. May you do Abhishek daily and thus obtain the grace of Lord Shiv. May Lord Vishwanaath bless you all. A Legend About Abhishek Story goes that after creation was complete, Lord Shiv began to live on top of the mount Kailaash with his consort Paarvatee. One day, Paarvatee asked Shiv that his devotees perform many rituals to please the Lord, but which one pleases him most. To this, Shiv replied that the 14th night of the new moon, during the month of Phaalgun is his favorite day. The day is celebrated as Shiv Raatri. On this day, devotees observe strict spiritual discipline and worship Shiv in four different forms during each of the four successive three-hour periods of the night. Shiv further said that the devotees offer him Bel leaves (Bilva Patra) on that day and that those leaves were precious to him than the precious jewels and flowers. Explaining the right way of worshipping to Shiv, the Lord said, devotees should bathe me in the milk during the first period, in curd at the second, in clarified butter in the third and in honey in the fourth and the last period. Shiv further added that next morning devotees must feed the Braahman first and, only after following the prescribed ritual must he break the fast. Shiv further told Paarvatee that rituals of Shiv Raatri could not be compared with any other performed for him. Paarvatee became deeply impressed with Shiv’s speech and she narrated it to her friends. Through them the word spread all over the creation. Hence, Shiv devotees began to celebrate Shiv Raatri by fasting and by performing the ceremonial baths and making an offering of Bel leaves. Fruit of Abhishek and Rudram Jap in Shiv's Temple Abhishek is a part of Shiv Poojaa. Without Abhishek, worship of Shiv is incomplete. During Abhishek, Rudra, Purush Sookt, Chamakam, Mahaa Mrityunjaya Mantra Jaap, Panchaksharee Mantra etc, are chanted. Chamakam is divided into eleven sections. Each of these is then combined with Namakam (Rudra) and repeated. This is called Rudra. Eleven such Rudra make one Laghu Rudra. Eleven Laghu Rudra make one Mahaa-Rudra. Eleven Mahaa-rudra make one Ati-rudra. Rudra is to be repeated after performing the initial Sankalp, Poojaa, Nyaas, Ang. Panchaamrit Snaan and Dhyaan. The fruit of Rudra Jap is stated as shown below: No of Jap - Fruit of Jap 1 Rudram - Freedom from Baal Graha (diseases common to children). 3 Rudram - Freedom from imminent difficulties with which one is faced. 5 Rudram - Freedom from the evil effects of certain planets occupying unfavorable positions. 7 Rudram - Freedom from great fear. 9 Rudram - The fruit of one Vaajapeya sacrifice and also attainment of peace of mind. 11 Rudram - Getting the favor of kings and great wealth. 33 Rudram - Attainment of wishes for objects and having no enemies. 77 Rudram - Enjoyment of great happiness. 99 Rudram - Attainment of son, grandson, wealth, grain, Dharma, Arth, Kaam and Moksh and freedom from death. 1 Mahaa-rudram - Attainment of the favor of kings and becoming the Lord of great wealth. 3 Mahaa-rudram - Fulfillment of impossible tasks. 5 Mahaa-rudram - Acquirement of vast lands. 7 Mahaa-rudram - Attainment of the seven worlds. 9 Mahaa-rudram - Freedom from births and deaths. 10 Ati-rudram - Becoming God. Fruits of Various Abhishek Materials for Abhishek : Pure water, milk, sugarcane juice, lemon juic, ghee, honey, waters of sacred rivers, sea water, Kush water, rice powder, cooked rice, Panchaamrit, Panchgavya. Milk gives long life, freedom from diseases, and for begetting a son. It is believed that by doing Abhishek with milk, even a barren woman begets children. 1. What is Rudram ?
Śrī Rudram, also known as Śrī Rudrapraśnaḥ, is a hymn offered to the all pervading Brahman, designated as Rudra-Śiva, present in auspicious, benign forms as well as terrible forms which He assumes at the time of the dissolution and the destruction of the cosmos. It occurs in the Taittirīya Saṁhitā of the Kṛṣṇa Yajurveda in the 4th kāṇda (chapter), 5th praśna (topic) and it is considered as one of 108 Upaniṣads. It is also known as Namakam because of the repeated word namaḥ in it.
Śrī Rudram is divided into 11 anuvākas (passages) and consists of 37 ṛks (verses) in various Vedic chandas (meters) in anuvāka 1, 10 and 11. Anuvākas 2 to 9 and the last line of anuvāka 11 consist of 130 yajus (sacrificial formulas).
2. Who is Rudra ?
Rudra is a mythological god of the Vedic Aryans. He finds mention in the Rig Veda but there is a detailed section in praise of Rudra in the Yajur Veda. Rudra has two forms, ghora or terrible form and śiva or auspicious form. Hence Rudra is one side and Śiva the other side of the same coin. They are not two, but one. The Brāhmaṇa text which interprets the Rudram states: “Rudra is verily this fire. He has two forms; one terrible, the other auspicious. If a man does sacrifice to Him by chanting the Rudram, that man pacifies the terrible form”.
The word Rudra has 4 root meanings: (a) dreadful, terrific, angry; (b) great or large; (c) driving away evil; (d) fit to be praised. Another explanation derived from the meaning of its roots is also; “ru”, to cry or to teach, “rud”, to make a person weep, and “dra” to flow. HenceRudra is considered as a deity who teaches the supreme knowledge to all and whose energy flows in everything
Rudra
3. What is the significance of Sri Rudram ?
The purpose of this magnificent hymn is to set aside once and for all, the extra-cosmic notion of God that people sometimes entertain in their religious fervour, and to instil into the minds of people the greater, profounder knowledge of the fact that God is not merely the creative extra-cosmic Parent of the Universe, but He is also immanent in every particle, in every speck of space, in every unit of time, in every nook and corner, in every particle of creation.
A very intriguing aspect of God present in this wondrous hymn is that God is existing in both the aspects; the good and the bad, the beautiful and the ugly, the right and the wrong, the positive and the negative, the high and the low, the conceivable and the inconceivable, mortality and immortality, existence and non-existence.
It is considered as the only hymn of its kind in the religious literature of the entire world which focuses on the idea of God, not only associated with the ideas of pleasant and good, but also with the idea of dreadful and destructive; that the God permeates everything in manifestation, including aspects deemed not ethical by the purists and fault-finders.
4. Why Chant Rudram ?
It is said: “By reciting Veda once, he becomes pure on that day, but by reciting Rudram the very next moment he gets purified.” Yet another verse declares: “Where a devout reciter of the Rudram lives, be it in a village or town, that place will be free from disease, drought, thefts, and other ills.”
Śiva Purāṇa further explains: “By chanting Rudram, one gains both worldly pleasures and liberation.” The Jābāla Upaniṣad5 states: “Once the students of sacred knowledge asked sage Yājñavalkya: Can we gain eternal life by repetition of mantras? Yājñavalkya said: By the repetition of śatarudrīya6 a man becomes immortal, for the names of God therein are nectarine.” Kaivalya Upaniṣad7 also declares: “Whoever reads śatarudrīya becomes pure as fire, becomes pure as air”.
5. What is Chamakam ?
Chamakam, occurs in the Taittirīya Saṁhitā of the Kṛṣṇa Yajurveda in the 4th kāṇda, 7th praśna. It is so called on account of the recurrence of the word ca me directly translated as “and me”. After praying and identifying Rudra with everything in the Namakam, Camakam is usually recited immediately after, in which the devotee asks Him to give him everything, 347 things to be precise, coupled with the article ca (and) and the verb me kalpatām (be granted unto me). Camakam furnishes completely the idea of human happiness and defines in the highest degree the desires to be asked or to be granted. Camakam roots are firmly implanted in the worldly desires ultimately leading to the divine fulfilment
6. How much time does it take to Chant the Rudram ? And why are there 11 priests involved in the chanting ?
The typical time to chant the Sri Rudram (both Namakam and Chamakam) is about 40 mins.
Rudram is the most sacred means of worshipping Lord Siva. Sage Satapatha in his treatise “Maharnava Karma Vipaka” listed 4 types of procedures to propitiate Lord Siva, Ekadasa Rudram, Maha Rudram and Athi Rudram; each has greater significance than its preceding one. ‘Athi’ means “ultimate”. Therefore, Athirudram is the highest form of worship of Lord Shiva. Athirudram is a destroyer of all sorrows and the provider of ‘Kshema’.
The Sri Rudram has 11 anuvakas of Namakam and 11 anuvakas of Chamakam. After Each chanting of One round of Rudram one Anuvaka Each of Chamakam is chanted. Eleven recitations of Rudram followed by one recitation of Chamakam is called Ekadasa Rudram. This constitutes one unit of Rudra Homam. Eleven rounds of Ekadasa Rudram makes one Laghu Rudram. Eleven Laghu Rudra chartings make one Maharudram and eleven Maharudram recitations is the Athirudram. In a “AtiRudram yagna” Everyday One Maharudram is completed and in eleven days an Athirudra Mahayagnam is completed. Thus in the Athirudra Mahayagnam, the Srirudram hymn is chanted in all 14,641 times by 121 Ritwiks in 11 days with the performance of 1331 rudra Homams simultaneously.
The number 11 has a big significance in propitiating Lord Siva. The 11 priests are involved/required in the chanting to meet the specific number of recitations prescribed by the procedures.
7. Why is Rudram Chanted at Sathabhishekam functions ?
Man, according to Vedaantha and Yoga philosophies, is charged with a spark of the universal soul. Therefore, such functions are conducted to worship the atman residing in him so that he can unite with it ultimately. This uniting with the “Atman” is the sole purpose of human life and confers on the devotee the highest boon of immortality, i.e. liberation from the cycle of birth and death. Lord Shiva who is easy to please is also the embodiment of time and Rudram is chanted as an expression of gratitude for the long life granted and also to seek the ultimate boon of immortality.
8. What is the benefit of listening to Rudram Chamakam ?
A devout listener and seeker of Rudram Chamakam is blessed with both worldly and spiritual benefits such as good health, peace of mind and pure joy. Slowly and steadily it draws the listener to spirituality in the quest of the truth behind human existence.

Laghu Rudra
Lord Shiva has many names, and one out of them is Rudra. It is believed that various aspects of Lord Shiva can be invoked and worshipped. Even though chanting is preferred, listening to Rudram will also be beneficial for the devotees. Eleven recitations of Sri Rudram followed by one recitation of the chamakam is known as Ekadasa rudram. Eleven Ekadasa rudram combine to produce Laghu Rudra.
It is also understood that power available for this puja during Shravan month is unparalleled. Shravan month falls between mid-August and mid-September. Hence, puja is most likely to happen during this month because of the priority.
There are various benefits of Laghu Rudra. The individual or family will be blessed with health, wealth, and happiness. This also removes the unwanted negative vibes within the family and drives the family with positivity all alone. In addition to these two, it also boosts the family with spirituality and assists in smooth marriage and family life.
Laghu Rudra is performed all across the country and in part of Gujarat - which owns several significant temples as well. Temples like Somnath and Dwarka are present in Gujarat, but there's another unique and famous temple in the Western territory of India.
GUJARAT FAMOUS TEMPLE: Sun temple in Modhera, which is located about 100 kilometres away from Ahmedabad, is one of the finest temples in India. Built in the 11th century by King Bhimdev of Solanki dynasty, it is built in such a way that the sun shines on the image of Surya Chakra, starting from the sunrise to sunset. This temple is devoted to Sun God.
Similar to other temples, the sun temple accepts online bookings from their devotees. Since it’s becoming a huge problem for the devotees to travel and worship the god, the temple provides this option to make life easy.
