World University Rankings 2024: Covenant University Tops In Nigeria as University of Oxford, UK top in World Varsities Rankings.  Covenant University (CU) has been ranked as Nigeria’s top university in the Times Higher Education (THE) 2024 World University Rankings. The prestigious annual global ranking, which assesses universities based on their performance in teaching, research, industry impact, and international outlook, placed Covenant University within the 801-1000 range globally, alongside the University of Ibadan (UI). The 2024 edition of the rankings features 1,907 universities from 108 countries and regions, highlighting the growing competitiveness in higher education worldwide. This year’s assessment was based on 18 performance indicators, including the quality of teaching, research output, and industry collaboration. The analysis covered more than 134 million citations from 16.5 million research publications and surveyed over 68,000 scholars globally. THE collected over 411,789 data points from 2,673 institutions that submitted information for evaluation. Covenant University’s top placement reaffirms its status as a leader in higher education in Nigeria, with the University of Ibadan (UI) closely following in the same global bracket. Traditional rulers will aid anti-graft war – ICAN

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria has said that traditional rulers are essential to the anticorruption fight in the country. Speaking during a recent courtesy visit to the paramount ruler of Emohua, Sergeant Chidi Awuse, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, ICAN President, Dr. Innocent Okwuosa, stated traditional rulers could collaborate with the government to promote accountability and transparency in the management of public funds. ICAN is one of the corporate entities that have been in the vanguard of promoting accountability and transparency in the management of public funds in Nigeria. Okwuosa said, “We argue that it will be difficult to ensure accountability and transparency in the management of public funds in Nigeria without the buy-in of traditional rulers. Traditional rulers are the custodians of grassroots accountability. Grassroots accountability has been ingrained in African culture and tradition before the arrival of the British. “By ensuring grassroots accountability, traditional rulers are best suited to fight corruption in Nigeria if supported by government. This is because those in government first come from communities where the people’s culture is the order of the day.” Okwuosa, who presented a plaque to the traditional ruler in recognition of his immense contributions to the institute, requested that the monarch use his good office to support the state in conjunction with ICAN to embrace the best practices in public finance management as the state ranked “among the lowest percentile among the 36 states of the federation”. Okwuosa also congratulated the traditional ruler on his appointment as the chancellor of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology. ICAN opposed the hike in electricity tariff last year, claiming it coincided with the removal of fuel subsidy and exchange rate harmonisation, which led to a devaluation of local currency. By • Olalekan Fagbade Three Traditional Rulers traveling for burial reportedly die in ghastly motor accident Tragedy struck at Oyo State on Friday as three traditional rulers from Oriire local government area in the Ogbomoso geo-political zone of the state died in a road accident that occurred at Arinkinkin area Ogbomoso. The three monarchs were said to be on their way to the funeral of a relative of one of their colleagues in the zone, Oloolo of Oolo Oba Oyebunmi Ajayi. The dead monarchs include Olodogbo of Odogbo, Onibowula of Bowula and Alayetoro of Ayetoro, all from Oriire local government. The accident reportedly occurred when their vehicle rammed into an oncoming truck killing them instantly. A source at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso confirmed the incident, saying their remains have been deposited at the hospital’s morgue. Four people were said to be involved in the accident, and the fourth person who sustained injury is reportedly being treated at the hospital, the source revealed, Saturday.

Professor Ekundayo Adeyinka Adeyemi who passed on, this day last year, was the first professor of architecture from Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa. Professor Adeyemi served in his academic capacity first at Ahmadu Bello University Zaria (ABU Zaria), then Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), to Covenant University, and finally at Cross River State University of Technology (CRUTECH) now University of Cross River State, Calabar (UNICROSS). I had hoped to see him during one of his rare visits at the architecture department at UNICROSS, but that never happened in time before the pandemic struck.
