Have you ever squeezed a toothpaste tube and wondered how it gets that perfect consistency? Or tried to pour honey and been amazed by its resistance to flow? These everyday experiences are all thanks to viscosity – a property that determines a liquid's thickness or resistance to flow.

Grease selection is always a very important topic to consider for industrial applications because ensuring use of the proper grease can increase equipment efficiency and lifetime and reduce wear. Not all greases are formulated the same and some are much better than others for certain specific applications. This article will explain the most important criteria for grease selection and will give insight into which major applications will require which type of grease or grease performance characteristics.
The resistance to flow of a Liquid refers to Viscosity and it depends on the shear stress and shear rate. Viscosity can be measured using a simple formula:
viscosity = shear stress / shear rate
The SI unit of viscosity is poiseiulle (PI). Its other units are newton-second per square metre (N s m-2) or pascal-second (Pa s.) Measuring and study of the flow of matter, primarily in a fluid state refers to Rheology. It involves measuring the viscosity of a fluid under conditions of alternating shear stress. This method is often used to study the flow behavior of complex fluids such as polymers, emulsions, and suspensions.
Types of Viscosity
Viscosity is the measure of fluid's friction to its flow. There are two ways to measure the fluid's viscosity :
Dynamic Viscosity (Absolute Viscosity)
Kinematic Viscosity
When fluid's resistance to flow is measured when external force is applied is Dynamic Viscosity, whereas measuring resistive flow of a fluid under the weight of gravity is Kinematic viscosity.
The K23900 complies with ASTM D445, D6074, D6158, and other methods. The K23900 features:
- Stainless Steel Bath Construction
- Dual Digital Displays show setpoint and actual bath temperature
- Selectable temperature scale - Fahrenheit or Celsius
- Multi-point temperature calibration
- Integrated redundant overtemperature and low liquid level cut-off circuitry

Kinematic Viscosity Bath (also called KV Bath) is an instrument used to determine the Kinematic Viscosity of a Fluid with help of a glass capillary Viscometer maintained at a constant temperature.
Constant temperature bath with advanced temperature control circuitry for convenient.
Microprocessor PID circuitry assures precise, reliable temperature control within ASTM specified stability and uniformity throughout the operating range of the bath.
Simple push-button controls and dual digital displays permit easy setting.
The bath accommodates seven glass capillary viscometers of various types.
Viewing the viscometers is made easy by LED illumination inside the bath and a baffle that provides a background for easy viewing.
Temperature control uniformity is assured by an integrated stirrer and baffling system for uniform bath temperature distribution.
Connection of the built-in cooling coil to tap water or a recirculating water chiller facilitates temperature control at ambient or below ambient temperatures. Kinematic viscosity is expressed in units of centistokes (cSt) or square meters per second (m²/s).

This is probably not unique or unusual (I hope) but I feel too many emotions when I see industrial equipment, specifically medical/chemistry equipment.
I wish I could go to a general industrial warehouse that just sells a bunch of big expensive equipment.
You know how some people spend hours just wandering around home depot? They like looking at shit and imagine using it all on the various projects they will never do. That's me but with equipment and machinery that is specialized. Do I know what all of them do? Nope. Do I know how to use any of them? Not at all (yet). Do I lose my mind just looking at them and their specs? YUP.
When I got to do work in a lab and saw all those big ass machines that sort and cool and test stuff I struggled so hard to contain myself, like straight up I was overwhelmed. Why? I don't know at all.
So anyway, I'm just going to share some stuff I saw browsing that made me shake my fists and slam the table like this:
