Unpopular but essential – petroleum products improve lives in unappreciated ways

We encounter petroleum1 products on an almost constant basis – like something as inconspicuous as an iPhone case or as essential as indoor plumbing. Though petroleum is synonymous with automobiles, this represents less than half of petroleum demand. Perhaps surprisingly, an almost equivalent amount of petroleum demand is derived from non-transportation sources. Where else do we encounter petroleum products? How about in milk cartons, golf balls, MRI scanners, lipstick, crayons, and solar panels.

Regardless of its ubiquity, petroleum is often vilified for its role in the environment, primarily from use as transportation fuel. Today, transportation accounts for 14% of global greenhouse gas emissions, with approximately two-thirds coming from cars and trucks.2 Agriculture, industrial, and power are all bigger emitters. As a feedstock for materials and polymers, the problem with petroleum here is not so much with emissions – since it is chemically reformulated versus combusted – but disposal. Though progress continues towards reducing the environmental impact, petroleum is nevertheless a vital component to a functioning global economy and to sustaining and improving living standards globally. In this blog we explore the essential role of petroleum products, what is being done to minimize the negative impacts, and the practical reality of alternatives.

Petroleum meaningfully improves the standard of living for people globally

Petroleum is used as feedstock to make everyday products, ranging from products large and small, recreational and essential. In healthcare, this includes medicine bottles, IV bags, ventilators, personal protective equipment, and hand sanitizers. For recreational items, these include tents, bikes, canoes, rope, backpacks, and fishing poles. Other applications include detergents, home insulation, carpets, furniture, food packaging, diapers, and vehicle bumpers and instrument panels. The list is endless. Petroleum products are used in so many applications because it can be engineered – optimizing its features for being lightweight, durable, corrosion-resistant, and cost-effective – to serve a specific purpose.

But aside from these every day, often mundane aspects, petroleum is essential in providing billions of people with humane living standards: clean water, sanitation, and clean burning fuel, to name a few. For example, petroleum is a feedstock to produce polyvinyl chloride, commonly known as PVC. Indoor plumbing and water infrastructure rely heavily on PVC pipe because of its durability, moldability, recyclability, and cost-effectiveness. Without PVC, more expensive alternative materials, such as steel or copper, would inhibit the proliferation of indoor plumbing and water infrastructure, specifically in developing nations. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), two billion people still do not have basic sanitation facilities such as toilets or latrines, and without effective, low-cost materials such as PVC, these basic sanitation needs will go unmet much longer than necessary.

Propane is another example of petroleum being used to meaningfully improve lives. According to the WHO, approximately three billion people still cook with solid fuels such as wood, crop wastes, and dung. These cooking fuels are detrimental to your health, with an estimated four million people dying prematurely each year from solid fuels.3 In India, approximately 78% of the population in 2015 used solid fuels, leading to an estimated half a million deaths a year, with women and young children the most vulnerable. In 2016 the Indian government launched Ujjwala, which provided both access and subsidies for propane. As a cooking fuel, it burns much cleaner and more efficiently than solid fuels. Since it was easily distributed in cannisters provided for free by the government, propane coverage has now reached approximately 90%, immediately improving the lives of hundreds of millions of people there. The Ujjwala program remains popular domestically. Today, India is amongst the largest propane importers, supplied in large part by US exports.

Petroleum alternatives exist, but so do tradeoffs

Hypothetically, a “green” solution for replacing harmful solid fuels predicated on renewable power would have a smaller carbon footprint than propane, but practically, that would mean hundreds of millions of people would suffer for years, if not decades, waiting on solar and wind farms, transmission lines, and distribution infrastructure, nevermind being able to afford an electric stove. Instead, utilizing propane not only results in meaningfully better health outcomes for millions of people today, but also immediately improves the environment. If two billion people were to switch from wood to propane, carbon emission would be reduced by approximately 415 million tons annually – about the emissions from the United Kingdom – and deforestation would decline by approximately five million acres – equivalent to approximately 40% of annual global deforestation.4

Plastics, which are almost entirely derived from petroleum, have been essential in increasing energy efficiency, reducing food waste, and enhancing health and safety. Plastics are versatile, durable, cheap, and lightweight, and common applications include packaging (e.g., clamshell boxes, bubble wrap, protective film) and food-service storage and preservation (e.g., milk jugs, bread bags, yogurt containers). Though alternatives such as aluminum and glass do not utilize petroleum as a direct feedstock, the tradeoff of their (i) high heat requirements (provided mostly from coal and natural gas) during production and (ii) additional weight5, thus requiring greater energy for transport, renders their overall carbon footprint significantly greater than plastics.

Plastics are currently amongst the largest sources of petroleum demand and are expected to be the largest source of growth going forward, particularly in emerging markets. Consider, plastic consumption per capita in North America is 126kg, which is considerably higher than Latin America, Asia ex-China, and the Middle East and Africa which are all below 40kg and China which is less than 80kg. Besides plastic, petroleum is still an essential ingredient to the industrial economy – large-scale transportation modes (e.g., ships, rail, planes), steel mills, refineries, and petrochemical facilities are all powered by petroleum while alternative fuels have suboptimal and counterproductive energy density, distribution and availability, and reliability characteristics. “Improving living standards” is something to strive for but the term can be a vague target: more granularly, the benchmarks include sanitation, medical supplies, food security and safety, and commerce – all of which require petroleum to improve and make available.

Despite the growing necessity of plastics, solutions are needed for waste and disposal. Plastics in oceans, rivers, and landfills are certainly a major problem today and left unabated, the environmental harm will offset gains in living standards. Founded last year, The Alliance to End Plastic Waste (AEPW) is a non-profit consisting of 50 companies across the supply chain focused on finding sustainable solutions. Although alternative materials are being sought, the focus today from consumer companies and the industry is on recycling. Two key focus areas are (i) making goods and packaging more recyclable and (ii) increasing the recycled content in products and packaging. Anecdotally in the US, we see an increasing amount of consumer goods and e-commerce packaging made from recycled content, and we expect this trend to grow quickly. Potential innovations such as chemical recycling – taking mixed plastics and converting them back to their original materials – would provide another solution alongside mechanical recycling, which exists today but faces sorting bottlenecks. Ultimately, the industry is incentivized to find solutions, and we expect sustained investment in recycling infrastructure and sustainable packaging in the near and long term.

Though near-term uncertainties exist, midstream valuations remain compelling

A common concern from investors in the oil and gas sector is about the uncertain secular trends facing the industry. In our view, these uncertainties are driven by headlines and rhetoric. Consider, (i) the large and globally expanding non-transportation derived demand for hydrocarbons discussed here, (ii) the impediments and realities to rapid power generation conversion (to be discussed in a later blog), and (iii) the very slow and only partial transportation-fuel transition (see our blog Will electric vehicles muffle future oil demand?) mean global demand for hydrocarbons is unlikely to significantly deteriorate for the foreseeable future.

Acknowledging the uncertainty in today’s global economy, fundamentals remain strong for US midstream. For example, Enterprise Product Partners LP (NYSE: EPD) generated a second quarter 2020 earnings-before-interest-taxes-depreciation-and-amortization (EBITDA) run-rate of nearly $8 billion during an unprecedented commodity price and volume environment. EPD can sustain the business with an annual capital spend of approximately $1 billion, meaning the company can fully self-fund capital expenditures and have billions leftover to return to unitholders and further de-lever its already strong balance sheet. This free cash flow compares favorably to EPD’s total enterprise value of $68 billion and 10% yield.6 The broader midstream space looks similarly attractive – according to Wells Fargo’s fiscal year 2021 metrics, the average MLP EBITDA multiple is 8.2x, yield is 11%, and distribution coverage is 2.1x.

As the broader stock market looks past the near-term COVID-19 uncertainty and reaches new all-time highs, midstream equities are priced as if today’s uncertainty is the new normal. As discussed in this blog, US petroleum production is a vital component in today’s global economy and necessary in maintaining and improving global living standards, and although much uncertainty exists over the next year, we firmly believe that these truths remain constructive for the US midstream space over the long-term.

Homeowners urged to use cheap oil for heating…

GB Energy Prices Winter Dec 2017

The Federation of Petroleum Suppliers (FPS) is urging the 1.5 million UK homeowners and businesses that use oil for heating to get themselves prepared for the winter and not be caught out by bad weather.

FPS spokesperson, Dawn Shakespeare, said: “Heating oil is currently the cheapest form of energy and has been since January 2015 so while getting ready for what the winter months have in store it is important to know when is the best time to buy and the best way to purchase oil to make the best savings.

“By planning ahead, you can ensure you are ready for all that this winter has in store, including managing the additional heating costs and making sure you don’t run out of heating oil for your homes when you’ll need it the most. The increased demand during the winter, and especially in the run-up to Christmas regardless of the weather, usually means extra demand on suppliers and delivery delays so we are urging people to make sure they don’t get caught out by leaving it too late.

“Our members understand that times are hard and people may want to wait before ordering fuel but a lot of oil distributors run payment schemes to encourage customers to have bigger, less frequent deliveries but then spread the payments out over the whole year, helping both financially and ensuring homeowners don’t run out of fuel when winter hits.

“The majority of homes on heating oil are often in rural locations, when the weather turns cold it can be particularly problematic if plans are not in place to cope with the winter months. The good news is that there are many things you can do now to ensure you’re prepared for when the weather stops being mild, including checking your oil tanks and heating systems today.

“Boilers should be serviced at least once a year to ensure they are running efficiently and are able to cope with the upcoming winter. If you have an older boiler, you may want to upgrade to a modern condensing oil boiler as this will reduce fuel consumption by around 20%. Therefore, cutting fuel costs significantly – heating oil is the cheapest form of energy right now so it makes sense to consider switching to it.

Following the release of the October 2017 energy comparison report produced by Independent provider of comparative home heating costs, Sutherland Tables, the latest figures show that heating a typical three-bedroom home on oil, using a condensing boiler is now just £894 per annum. Even with a conventional boiler, that’s nearly half the cost of the nearest off grid alternative.

If you use LPG the average cost is £1529 per annum, Electricity is £1910 per annum and traditional gas heating £967 per annum. This means that an oil condensing boiler is also substantially cheaper to run than any renewable heating option with Wood pellets costing £1280 per annum and air source heat pump radiators £1681 per annum.”

The FPS also recommends checking your tank, pipes and other equipment for leaks, damage and interference once a week. Any problems should be fixed as soon as possible by an Oil Firing Technical Association (OFTEC) technician.

Types of Condenser Boilers

In a typical four-barrel gas boiler, the heating fuel is mixed with air and heated to produce the heat. A condenser is built around the boiler, but doesn’t provide any hot water, so a secondary burner is needed to feed hot water into the main boiler. The working of a condenser heat pump is similar, as it gives off cold water that’s cooled by the boiler water, and the cold water goes through the condenser tank. The condenser heat pumps were the most common type of heating pumps until new ways of using them became available.

Compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is used to power the compressing pistons in the compressors of today’s heat pumps. The mechanical compression of compressed gas produces heat energy, and this is transferred into electrical energy. Electricity is very useful in the home, because it’s widely available and it’s cheap. The electric motor of today’s heat pumps can be fully automated with a variety of controls.

Some applications for the heat pumps today are the control of air conditioning and refrigeration. As they have become more popular in the US, there has been increasing competition for sales from the larger manufacturers, and some units have gone out of production. Thus, it may not be profitable to buy one of these expensive heat pumps today. Some companies offer guaranteed parts, which make them attractive to the new builders. The replacement costs of a heat pump is very low, and you can choose to buy it in standard size or customized units for the home. Even though it may be less expensive to buy a ready-made unit, you will need to install it on your own.

LPG & Natural Gas Hot Water Systems

It’s cheaper than electricity (though gas prices are rising) and because gas rates don’t vary through the day, gas hot water systems can heat water as needed. Most systems use a storage tank, a four-person household needs a tank of about 135–170L.

These systems have an energy efficiency star rating. Both storage and instantaneous systems can have a pilot light, which uses a small amount of gas. Electric ignition is more economical, but in a blackout you can lose your hot water supply. Liquid petroleum gas (LPG) bottles are an alternative to natural gas – but can cost significantly more and you need to regularly order delivery to ensure you don’t run out.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]

Electric Hot Water Systems

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]These systems are usually relatively cheap to buy and install, but are often the most expensive to run, especially if it’s on the continuous (full day) rate. Running systems on off-peak electricity are cheaper but require a larger tank as the water heated overnight has to last you all day. Off-peak electricity isn’t available to all homes.

A four-person household typically needs a 125–160L tank for a continuous system or 250–315L for off-peak and can be installed indoors or outdoors. Solar Heating

A four-person household typically needs about four square metres of solar collector area (two panels) and a 300–360L tank. You need a large tank to allow for days with less sunlight (or more hot showers than usual).

If your panels can’t be installed in an ideal location, they may be less efficient requiring a larger collection area. The storage tank usually has an electric or gas booster element to keep the water hot on days with less sunshine.

Comparatively expensive and time-consuming to install, but a well-chosen system will pay for itself in the long run due to very low running costs. Government rebates and other incentives may be available to help offset the purchase cost.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]

Storage tank

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Most electric, gas, solar and heat pump hot water systems use a tank. Mild-steel tanks can corrode over time; maintenance every few years can help prevent this. They usually have five- to 10-year warranties. Many tanks have one or two “sacrificial anodes”. This is a metal rod inside the tank which attracts minerals and other impurities that would otherwise corrode the tank; the anode corrodes instead, ‘sacrificing” itself. Get a plumber to check the system and replace the anode every five years (or as per manufacturer instructions); doing this can add years to the life of the tank.

Stainless steel tanks are more expensive, but generally last longer and don’t require as much maintenance as mild-steel tanks. Sensex Hits All-Time High; Metal & PSU Stocks Lead

Asian stock markets are higher today as Japanese and Hong Kong shares show gains. The Nikkei 225 is up 0.6% while the Hang Seng is up 1.4%. The Shanghai Composite is trading up by 1.5%. Meanwhile, the benchmark US S&P 500 index and the Nasdaq index rose on Monday as a jump in 10-year bond yields boosted financial sector stocks and investors anticipated continued strength in corporate earnings and US economic growth.

Back home, India share markets opened the day on a firm note. The BSE Sensex is trading up by 112 points while the NSE Nifty is trading up by 27 points. The BSE Mid Cap index opened up by 0.4% while BSE Small Cap index opened the day up by 0.3%.

The rupee is currently trading at 68.85 to the US$.

All the sectoral indices have opened the day in green with metal stocks and PSU stocks witnessing maximum buying interest.

In the news from the telecom sector. In the latest development, putting an end to the speculation on whether or not the Vodafone-Idea Cellular merger would be delayed over the spectrum charge demand made by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), the two companies have deposited a total of Rs 72 billion in cash and bank guarantee.

With the financial dues out of the way, the merger of Vodafone and Idea Cellular is likely to be approved in the next few days.

The companies have deposited a bank guarantee of Rs 33.2 billion for one-time spectrum charges and Rs 39.3 billion cash for spectrum liberalisation.

Having made the payment, the merged entity, to be called Vodafone Idea, could still challenge the dues, the reports noted.

The firms have sought a recalculation of dues, but the DoT is yet to respond. To avoid a delay, the companies decided to pay the whole amount demanded by the government.

Any further delay could have cost the two debt-ridden firms heavily.

Vodafone Idea will be the country's largest telecom operator, with a revenue market share of around 37.4% and more than 438 million subscribers. The UK-headquartered telecom major, Vodafone, had announced the merger of its India operations with Kumar Mangalam Birla-led Idea Cellular in March last year.

The companies were hoping to complete the merger by the end of June but the process got delayed by a month. The DoT had given a conditional nod to the merger a couple of weeks ago if they paid up Rs 72 billion as spectrum charges.

After issuing the final letter of approval, the DoT will transfer Vodafone India's licences to Idea Cellular. The department will also start transferring Vodafone's bank guarantees for deferred spectrum payments to Idea Cellular.

The merger of Vodafone Idea is expected to alter the telecom market in the country, making it a three-player universe of two big incumbents and disruptor Reliance Jio.

In just 18 months of commercial operations, Jio has captured a revenue market share of around 20%.

Recently, Bharti Airtel (India) CEO Gopal Vittal had said that the telecom sector was set to have just three big players holding similar market share.

If that theory holds, Vodafone Idea could lose some market share as Airtel and Jio are expected to continue to exert pressure on margins. The combined debt of Vodafone India and Idea, estimated at around Rs 1.1 trillion, will be an added burden on the margins, the reports noted.

Speaking of telecom sector, the whole telecom business has been an underwhelming story so far. While the telecom subscriber base has increased from 300 million in 2008 to 1.2 billion in 2017, investors have little to cheer. The BSE Sensex has gone up 3.25 times in nine years, but the BSE Telecom Index has not moved from its levels of 2008, as can be seen from the chart below:

Moving on to the news from oil & gas sector. As per an article in a leading financial daily, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd would invest a total of around Rs 120 billion in the Haldia refinery and pipeline infrastructure in West Bengal.

Reportedly, the Haldia refinery's capacity would be increased from 7.5 mmtpa to 8 mmtpa, and will undertake the transition to BS-VI compliant fuel by April 2020.

Further, the state-owned company would invest Rs 76 billion in the refinery.

LPG bottling plants at Durgapur and Kalyani would be connected by pipeline, which would be brought from Paradeep via Haldia. The Budge plant would be connected later. This would entail an investment of Rs 43.3 billion.

IOC share price opened the day up by 1.1%.

While thinking about the idea of an altruistic, fair public option for health insurance, I started trying to figure out why something like it doesn't already exist. (Or maybe it does?) The assumption seems to be that health insurance companies are causing problems through systematic greed, and the public option would help keep them honest. But, if this is the case, why isn't there an organization doing this already? Why don't the good, people, such as the ones that take less-pay than they could in other sectors to run major charitable organizations, start a good health insurance company that doesn't do any of the bad things that the other insurance companies do. If such an organization were to exist, it seems that everyone would switch to it, and even the most greedy of insurance companies would have to become like it in order to compete. There are obviously enough qualified and caring people out there to make such an organization happen without any government involvement. So why dont such organizations exist? I have a few ideas, but they dont explain the whole story. Maybe the fact that people dont usually shop around for health insurance because its chosen by their employers prevents new good insurance companies from gaining the market share required to make the bad ones change? My boyfriend and I were at a stop light the light turned green. We started to go (this area is under contraction so the lanes are all messed up). Need to start paying for own insurance. help?

So, im 19 almost 20 and im going to be graduating from college this semester, so naturally i have loans that will be due, but i also know that i will have to start paying my own insurances and all that because my parents wont be able to claim me anymore. my question is, how much roughly (average) would it be for health, car, and possibly life insurance?monthly,yearly, however it gets paid. i dont make a whole lot of money so i would like to know about how much it will be, so can figure out if ill be able to afford it all and to make a budget. i dont get any of those benifits at work right now, but i plan to become an apprenctice electrician next fall or spring, which im sure will handle the insurance costs but untill then im some what limited with money. thanks, any and all good help is appreciated""

Okay today my car was broken into at school and they shattered the drivers side window and stole my $150 radio and my $120 graphing calculator. I have full auto insurance coverage but what coverage does this fall under? Comprehensive coverage? I saw on this website that homeowners insurance would cover this but that didn't make sense to me.
