when vernon came to your room for math tutoring that rainy tuesday evening, you knew something had happened.

vernon had been unusually quiet the whole walk home, and you noticed something had gone wrong before school was dismissed. he had come from the locker room with what seemed to be tear streaks on his face, and excused himself quickly to run to the bathroom, washing his face as fast as he could before leaving with you.

vernon was never one to show strong emotion, let alone cry. it worried you to see vernon so down, and your heart clenched when vernon stared at you with those pretty yet tired hazel eyes.

once the two of you had gotten to your house, vernon had said hello to your parents with as much cheerfulness as he could muster before the two of you headed upstairs for math tutoring.

the whole time you were trying to go over vernon's homework answers, he just quietly stared at the page of his homework, nodding emptily when hearing you say something. you could tell vernon was in his own world, and eventually, you put your pencil down, speaking up for the first time since you had left school.

"you're not paying attention, are you, vernon?" you ask teasingly, hoping to lighten the mood.

vernon finally snaps out of his daze, slowly shaking his head as he runs a hand through his fluffy, brown hair. "no, sorry."

sighing, you close your math book, studying vernon's features as he wrings his hands together. his long eyelashes seem to brush against his cheeks as he stares down at the wooden table, and his lithe lips seem soft as he lets out a shaky breath.

"do you wanna talk about it?" you ask softly, feeling a sudden burst of confidence as you reach out to vernon's wringing hands. he pauses, surprised at your touch, but doesn't move, letting you hold his hands as he drops them to the table.

"i just—" vernon pauses, deep voice tinged with sourness. "my mom and dad had another fight. it's just going to be my dad at home tonight."

you fall silent, heart even more broken at vernon's situation: you knew his parents were in a rough spot in their marriage, but you didn't know it was this rough. you thought vernon was exaggerating when he said they had fights every other day, but he was being serious—he had stayed home from school the day before yesterday for that same reason.

"i'm sorry. i really am, vernon," you hold vernon's gaze, watching as his eyes glaze over with tears. you've never seen vernon this upset before, and it makes you want to cry too.

"it's whatever. i can't do anything about it, anyways," vernon says the sentence like he's just accepted his parents' fate; he lets the tears fall quietly, wiping the tears from his cheeks as he looks away. it makes your heart drop, but you offer the best smile you can to him as you continue to speak.

"let's stop with math for today. let's do something fun." you offer, and vernon lights up slightly, tears disappearing as he laughs.

"fun? you would be the one telling me to focus right now—this is new. what's changed?" vernon's shocking brown eyes meet yours, and you flush under his gaze, glancing away as you shrug.

"i just...i want you to have fun and get your mind off things," you say softly, and a twinge of some emotion appears in vernon's eyes, just as quickly disappearing.

"okay. i mean, i'm not complaining if i don't get to do math." vernon cracks a small smile, and you giggle, putting your books away as you stand up, glancing at vernon.

he follows your movements quickly, now just a few inches away from your face as he stares at you. he had grown over the few years you had known him, and he's starting to get taller than you now—vernon looks down at you as his dark eyes take in your figure and his hair falls into his long eyelashes, obscuring his piercing gaze.

suddenly, your hand seems to move on its own, and you reach up to vernon's face, softly moving vernon's bangs from his eyes. he doesn't flinch or move, letting you do your thing as a small blush dusts his cheeks seconds later.

"thanks," his voice is cool, blushed face doing nothing to his normal monotone voice. you nod, blushing yourself as you clear your throat awkwardly, looking away.

"well, uh—let's go find something fun to do." you smile, and vernon matches your facial expression, nodding. "yeah, let's go do that."

when the two of you leave your bedroom, you both can tell that something has changed between you. the friendship you had is still there, but something is lingering now—something growing that neither of you can ignore.

you're thinking that something is love.

Wilhelm von Henneberg - important NPCs

Cecilia von Henneberg (née Töpfer)

Wilhelm wife & love of his life

she has roots in Italy & southern Germany, but after her husband's death Cecilia's pregnant mother left for Henneberg, to live with a friend of hers. shortly before their arrival Cecilia's mother gives birth to a boy, Cecilia's younger brother Johannes, but dies shortly afterwards

the siblings are raised by Bertha, their mother's friend & the widow of a potter

when she's 19 Cecilia meets the young knight Wilhelm & the two of them quickly fall in love, despite the difficulties that causes

against all odds they do get married 2 years later, their eldest son Jonas is already born at that point

she's Wilhelm's most valuable advisor once he becomes count, especially regarding the needs of the common people

she's also headstrong, but much less impulsive than her husband & therefore often the voice of reason between them

Cecilia is abolutely not afraid to kill & do whatever is necessary for her family, especially to protect her children

Jonas von Henneberg

Wilhelm & Cecilia's oldest son & heir of Henneberg

the fact that he was born before his parent's marriage is more or less an open secret that Jonas is aware of. it makes him even more determined to prove himself worthy of his future position as count

he's named for his uncle Johannes, Cecilia's brother, who was killed in battle before his birth

appearance wise, he takes after his father with brown curls & the same green eyes

Maria von Hörselgau (née von Henneberg)

Wilhelm & Cecilia's younger daughter (their third child)

always preferred books to people (relatable queen) & is the most studious out of her siblings

she looks more like her mother with her blonde waves, but her eyes look more like Wilhelm's

named after Wilhelm's little sister (who's also Maria's godmother)

while her parents never want to pressure her when it comes to marriage (given how lucky they've been in that regard), they do want to see her well taken care of in the case of their deaths & therefore introduce some worthy candidates to her

Sebastian von Hörselgau eventually does win her over & when he agrees to her condition of no physical intimacy, Maria accepts his proposal (yes I wrote an asexual character into my story before I even knew the word or identified myself with it, life is funny like that)

her husband dies shortly after the wedding, in the same battle as Wilhelm, so the poor girl has to grieve her father AND a husband she was truly fond of

With extra funds that Wilhelm & Cecilia put away for their children, Maria goes to Italy to study medicine there

Heinrich von Reuß

Wilhelm's older (half) brother & heir to the duchy

literally no redeeming qualities, except for the fact that so much of his cruelty comes from how he was raised

from an early age Heinrich was taught that he needs to protect what's his and if possible even expand their family's influence. power is everything to him

he & Wilhelm have always clashed due to their personalities & upbringing & that only worsens as they get older

when Wilhelm is cast out, Heinrich is the one who doesn't mourn the loss of a brother at all & has no issue cutting all ties. In his eyes, Wilhelm has betrayed the family & is dead to him

on his deathbed, Heinrich's father reveals the truth about Wilhelm's parentage to him, only making the hatred grow & convincing Heinrich that Wilhelm as a bastard doesn't deserve the position as Count of Henneberg & he is entitled to claim it

in the chaos of a battle, Heinrich turns on Wilhelm & kills his brother

in the aftermath he officially wants to claim Henneberg & with Jonas badly wounded & indisposed it's Cecilia who fights to protect her son's inheritance

Heinrich & Wilhelm's younger brother Georg eventually finds out the truth about what happened on the battlefield & with Cecilia's blessing he poisons Heinrich

Ludwig von Erffa

Wilhelm's former lover & now enemy

Wilhelm & Ludwig were friends during their childhood at the duke's court, until Wilhelm left for his education

during the frequent visits throughout their adolescence something else starts to grow from there, leading to shy kisses and touches in the safety of night

while for Wilhelm this is a first love, it grows much more obsessive & consuming for Ludwig. when Wilhelm starts to retreat, that slowly but surely begins to shift to hatred & jealousy (once Wilhelm marries Cecilia)

Wilhelm (being barely 18) also definitely didn't understand that him either keeping his distance or reacting to any verbal jab furiously only stoked up the fire to the point of no return

it all leads to Wilhelm being captured while being on a mission for his uncle & Ludwig imprisoning him in his castle. Though before he can actually go ahead & kill Wilhelm, he is rescued.

At first Wilhelm wants to handle the whole situation quietly, but then he learns that Ludwig also threatened a pregnant Cecilia & their children's life, when she got too close to finding her husband. That is the last straw & his best friends & Cecilia herself can barely keep him from leaving to kill Ludwig immediately & committing a crime he can't come back from

instead Wilhelm takes the matter to the electoral court & challenges Ludwig to a trial by ordeal, that ends with Ludwig's death.

this is somehow the best-worst-most stressful-most rewarding race i've watched

on one hand

i got exactly what i've wanted all season which is a mclaren one-two and also got oscar's first win which means both my papaya boys are race winners and i got to see them spray each other with champagne and be covered in confetti and omg oscar's smile makes my heart implode also nico was interviewing lewis that was so cute 🧡🧡🧡😍😍😍😍

on the other hand

what the actual fuck was this race, how could i get exactly what i want but not be able to enjoy it, part of me wants to blame lando even tho i know it's not his fault but also everytime he ignores his engineers i get war flashbacks like broooo, team orders suck as a concept and it was just stressfull even though oscar defended his p1 throughout the last few laps like a champ, i wanted to tear my hair out, oh to be a fly on the wall during that debrief, im literally gonna post this then disapear because all social media platforms are about to be HELL!!

but like still im so happy for oscar and so proud of how far mclaren have come because they were literally in the trenches not that long ago

come on there’s gotta be at least 3 sete/vale rivalry appreciators (you me and pedro acosta)!! haven’t seen 2003-05 seasons in full but mugello 2004 alone was so great.

vale and gibernau finished 1&2 on the same podium SEVEN times in 2003, the only ppl who did it more in a single year (since 2000, was too lazy to look back further) were lorenzo/pedrosa in 2012 when they swapped 1&2 places 9 times on the podium.

listen, I know some people need their rivalries to be more balanced than this, but in terms of actual on-track battles it's like. one of the very best this century. (I'm trying to hold back from calling it the best this century but I don't not believe that?) also some might argue that the 1-2 achievement is even more impressive in 2003 than in 2012, given more riders were capable of fighting for wins and the field spread was way less dramatic. sete's 2003 season in particular is so underrated, man's scoring an average of 17.3 points per race, four wins, 10/16 races on the podium, only two races where he was worse than fourth... serious pace plus consistency! out of nowhere!

anyway, here's every notable on-track encounter between sete and valentino, with * to **** asterisks by how worth watching it is for the fight between those two specifically. (for most of these, of course you can find more details in the sete post and the valentino race recs post.) using italics I've indicated which races are available on youtube (or on facebook, in the case of phillip island 2004):

welkom 2003**: the first race after kato's death, and the one where sete secures his unlikely emotional victory. valentino applied heavy pressure on sete in the late stages, but sete stood firm

le mans 2003***: yes, valentino was unlucky when the race was interrupted by rain - but the resulting battle between sete and valentino in the last few laps in tricky conditions is fantastic. multiple overtakes on the last lap and both riders off-track at the final corner

catalunya 2003*: valentino looked locked-on for the victory until he made two mistakes, the second of which has him go off-track and drop several places to hand capirossi the win. vale finds some crazy pace to catch up with biaggi and sete and pass them both

sachsenring 2003****: valentino gets a big enough lead you think it's surely over... but then sete catches him, leading valentino to let him go by so he can study him from behind. a dramatic final lap that prompts a bit of an existential crisis from valentino

brno 2003****: valentino shows up after the summer break with red hair, a determined smile and a mission. this race is a thriller, a proper dogfight between 3-5 riders with plenty of twists and turns - before the whole thing distils into an all timer of a final lap duel

rio 2003*: valentino sticks behind sete for a while, but it feels like he was just biding his time. once he gets past, he pushes hard and pulls away for a comfortable win

sepang 2003*: the match point race, after valentino had run away with the season post-brno. valentino gets a middling start and has to hunt down sete, but once he does he again pulls away

mugello 2004***: MY BELOVED. this is where the momentum in that season really shifts, courtesy of one hell of a chaotic race. there is an excellent sete/valentino duel in this race, but it's far from the only thing going on. all of it's brilliant

catalunya 2004****: a race long duel! I love catalunya duels because so much of it is about tyres getting chewed up and the riders wobbling and sliding more and more. sete's home race and psychologically a very important race... one hell of a show

assen 2004****: the turning point of the relationship! I still FULLY believe this set up everything that happened next, even if nobody talks about this race any more. the fight slaps!! the last lap slaps!! the podium with bad vibes slaps!! valentino in that presser!!

brno 2004*: sete badly needed a win here, and in the end it's not particularly close. the early battle with those two and biaggi is fun, but eventually sete's newly upgraded honda has the clear edge

phillip island 2004****: the first duel post-qatar curse - so these two now hate each other. it's also a match point race! banger of a start, sete is proper feisty here leaving valentino to hunt him down. banger of a final lap too

valencia 2004*: last race of the season - and even though the title's been sealed up, wouldn't it be nice to get a morale-boosting win to take into the new year? at sete's home race too? ah, you know how this goes. the way valentino gets past sete is pretty funny

jerez 2005****: well of course! again, fierce start, and it takes a bit to get rid of everyone else so it's just those two again. the last lap is something special, as is the post-race drama

catalunya 2005***: back on sete home turf!! and sete rides such a good race, he's really doing his very best - except of course valentino is hunting him down again. there's a brutally dismissive quality to this victory

le mans 2005***: edwards streaks off in front until valentino catches him - and vale's content to sit on his teammate's rear tyre until sete catches them both. the race from there is a joy

sachsenring 2005***: another goody! hayden features quite prominently in this one, and crucially valentino never manages to make a break for it. sete leads going into the final lap

brno 2005***: the fun of this one is in remembering it's sachsenring // summer break // brno... and the duel here immediately picks up again with valentino brusquely cutting past sete on the first lap. really makes it feel like sete is trapped in some sort of a hellish time loop... the end to this one is proper CRUEL

qatar 2005***: one year anniversary of that race and of course sete is desperate to repeat his success. the more of these you watch the crueller they get, not least when it really does look like he's built up enough of a lead. melandri also plays a big part in this one

mugello 2006**: you just know how badly sete would have loved to win this (and so did the commentators). entire race is excellent but sete mainly features in the starting dogfight, not the latter stages

phillip island 2006**: this is a chaos bike swap race and there's a lot going on, all of which is very relevant to the title fight. relevant to this post is that sete and valentino end up fighting for the last podium place on the very last lap. their last duel before sete's career was cut short by injury

obviously, if anyone's looking to watch the full sete/valentino story, there's a few more races you'd have to add in like 2004 welkom, qatar and sepang. anyway, this rivalry slaps. hopefully soon a fourth person can be recruited to the cause
