London, Midland & Scottish Railway - LMS Ljungström's 4-2-2-2-6-4 steam turbine locomotive (Beyer Peacock Locomotive Works, Manchester-Gorton 6233 / 1926) by Historical Railway Images Via Flickr: The Ljungström Turbine Locomotive "The Ljungström steam turbine locomotive was constructed by Beyer, Peacock and Co. at Manchester, to the design of the original inventors and manufacturer, but considerably modified by British locomotive practice. In many respects it has a British appearance. It was completed several months ago, and after preliminary trials was lent to the London, Midland and Scottish Railway, which will give it service tests between London, Manchester and Glasgow on express trains Broadly, it consists of two vehicles, one carrying the boiler and the other the turbine and the condenser. The turbine is placed with its axis traverse to the centerline of the engine, and drives the leading pair of wheels through double helical reduction gearing. Two other axles are coupled to the driving axle in the usual way. A quill-type axle is used for the drive, and reversal is effected by means of an idle shaft and gears. The turbine itself is of the axial flow type, and is designed to develop 2000 horsepower at 10,000 revolutions per minute, equivalent to an engine speed of 70 miles per hour The condenser, of the Ljungström air-cooled type with auxiliary water surface condenser, comprises 2500 copper tube elements, arranged vertically on each side. Air is drawn between these tubes by four turbine-driven fans. A pump, driven from the fan shaft circulates the water for the auxiliary condenser. This water is used as the feed for the boiler. The boiler is of the ordinary Belpaire locomotive type, but a Ljungstrom air heater is fixed in the smokebox and supplies heated air to a closed ashpan. Since there is no blast, a turbine-driven fan is used to produce the draught necessary for combustion" From "The Engineer" 07 January 1927

How do ball screws work? A ball screw is a mechanical linear actuator that translates rotational motion to linear motion with little friction. A threaded shaft provides a helical raceway for ball bearings which act as a precision screw. Rolled screws are manufactured in a process that uses rotating dies to deform round metal bars and generate a helical thread pattern. This is a cost-effective manufacturing method, but typically produces screws with lower accuracy, compared to ground screws. Some manufacturers do, however, produce highly accurate screws through tightly controlled rolling processes. To select the correct ball screw and nut for a specific application, engineers should consider design factors like loads, life expectancy, speed, length, and mountings. Application considerations include lubrication and environment. Here’s a closer look. Several loading considerations impact ball-nut screws. For instance, static loads are generally straightforward and reach the maximum limit when screw and nut are loaded to their capacity without damage.Ground screws are made from a process by which a grinding wheel cuts screw threads into case-hardened material. As a result, lead accuracies are typically much tighter than in rolled screws. Ground screws are generally preferred over rolled versions in aerospace applications, because the seam formed close to the major diameter of the screw shaft is thought to have potential for crack propagation. Dynamic loads are thrust loads that, when applied to the ball nut and rotating screw assembly, result in a specific minimum life. Dynamic-load ratings for metric screws indicate a load in Newtons that can be carried for 1 million revolutionsBall screws handle both compression and tensile loads. Compression loads tend to compress or squeeze the screw axially, which can make screws bow out. Tensile loads, on the other hand, often stretch the screw axially.
