This evening on Nezumi’s shenanigans: stealing (borrowing) Lilu’s clothes and posing in front of a tall mirror.
Lilu was appreciating the view, though his hands crept from the man's back, as if he was stepping out of their very being and not the shadows or just walking up behind them. His fingers crawl around Nezumi's shoulders, smoothing sharp nails down collar bone and up his throat, to grip upon chin to angle aside. His legs materialized within heeled shoes, a lick of flame at each heel end as his lips travel a scolding kiss to their throat with a pleased hum.
"Ah - it is gorgeous, isn't it?" His free hand cradles Nezumi against his chest, not allowing them to move for a moment longer as his gaze drank the sight of a rather dashing beauty in his inky black get up. It was a wonderful outfit, a jumpsuit that glued to the skin - hid what was needed mind you, but the entire outside was meant to be like a change of skin.
The only exposed flesh were that of the hands, with a singular bang around the wrist and palm and the other skin to witness was that of the mid-chest, ribbons criss-cross over the thickness of it, tight but worth the pull as it finished itself off with a collar and ribbon combo. It was one of Lilu's favourites when he needed to be witnessed once in a while. It went amazing with an under bust corset of red and fold, also high heels with coloured rubber beneath.
Ah - his teeth nipped at the silken ribbons to release the man before snapping his fingers. "Stay there, pretty one." He ventured aside, grabbing the needed items and returning to aid in dressing his pretty human up. The corset was fixed into place with metal teeth - tugged tight with a readjustment of strings at the back. Then - a pair of heels that would melt into the black legs like they were a part of the suit itself.
He then moved to his make-up stand to hum over the obsession selection of shades to then tug aside a dark purple lipstick and ruby shadow. He didn't give Nezumi a moment to witness his face being completed, but when Lilu did back up he was in awe of his own work. "Ah - delicious." His teeth sank into his own lip, amusement and arousal ever-clear but he moved to the side, to instead allow his masterpiece to witness himself.
Sleek in shaped black, his lily-white skin on display that cut through the void - and his features pronounced with little colour but shading of a natural hue. A greyish contour, a ruby shadow that dusted up to the temple and those lips. Dark - shiny and full. Nezumi's hair - was left to be as pretty as it was. "How I want to eat you whole, little mouse." Fingers quaked as they returned to their form, smoothing over corset and ribbon ties to gently tug away from nipple so he could thumb the dusk thing.
"Let's try a few more outfits, hm? I wish to see just how pretty I can make you before I devour you whole."

N:Era: Where We Lie Part 7: The Summer Solstice
Cyras took a deep breath as she took her first steps out in her ugly opaque couche dress.
Banners spread across the arches, streamers from balconies, and crumbs from mouths. Hundreds of guests stared at her. They cheered so loud she couldn't hear her footsteps.
Lilu stepped up next to her in a pink, frilly, and fancy dress. Understandably, she looked murderous. "Wow, that is not a good dress for you."
"Same," Cyras told her. Both began laughing.
Rosod said, "Girls, we have a mission. Find and extract Ahmond, then take out Daybreak."
Cyras said, "Yeah, get some Ahmond extract." She saw everyone's attention go to a balcony.
Owlis stepped out. Cyras blinked as she saw the alpha in a white dress with amazing stitching. Her cuffs looked like doilies. Her volcanic glass shoes were stark black. Authoritative clacks accompanied her steps, as she stared down at everyone, who could only stare back up in awe. "She looks amazing."
Rosod snapped in Cyras' ear. Startled, she jumped.
Cracking a knuckle, Rosod said, "Anyway, right now I'll locate Ahmond and Lilu will keep an eye out on the violet. Your job is staying here. Everyone is keeping their eyes on you because you're the Empress' cousin and the newest goddess here."
"Goddess," Cyras asked with a raised eyebrow. "You don't believe that."
Lilu shook her head and said, "Anyway, yeah Kid, you're gonna be on your own for a few minutes."
As they walked away, Owlis appeared next to Cyras. "We have a schedule. For right now, let's meet with your other family members."
Cyras opened her mouth but was escorted by the Empress across the garden's dark green grass. She caught everyone's eyes.
Owlis paused in front of a golden fox near the snacks. She had some extra thick fur and curves. "Meet Bhrook, my sister."
Cyras did the math, slipping thoughts through the audience's cacophony, like water over a greasy window. Okay, so she was the daughter of Sumhyr, and Sumhyr was Owlis' cousin, meaning Owlis' sister would be her... Cousin once removed just like Owlis. She should have figured that out immediately instead of calculating the numbers but for some reason, her wit, always so sharp, was now so dull.
Bhrook stared down at the little girl and said, "Why hallo Cyras, very nice I can meet you." She sniffed her snout.
Cyras tilted her head at her and said, "You don't even look remotely like Owlis."
Bhrook said, "I have some purple markings, they're just covered up." Oh, she was wearing golden silk.
"And here I am," said a blue fox. "Current replacement of Ryvoh as leader of Glacialane. Raynfall. I'm the sister of Snofall."
Cyras stared at Owlis with bared fangs. "Who are all these people?"
Owlis told her, "Stop being snarky. There are four of the seasonal cousins, Ryvoh Spryng, Sumhyr, myself, and Snofall Whyntir."
"I find this ironic that the family named Winter all has 'fall' in their names. And I don't see how she could be replacing Ryvoh."
Owlis sighed. "Ryvoh, before she left, was the leader of Glacialane. Snofall led Wyrmhome. Your mother led Sunnyvilla."
"Speaking of," Bhrook asked, "do you... know anything about your mother?"
Owlis said, "She's on an 'if she asks' basis."
"I don't really care about my mother," Cyras said, eyes half-lidded as she walked away from three older foxes who had mouths agape. All she knew was her mom and dad died when she was younger.
What did interest her, however, were quite a few of the snacks she saw. She licked her teeth, wiggled her tail, and jumped up on a platform. Tea time with Owlis blessed her palette with many bread treats. Muffins, cookies, cupcakes, or her favorite, gingerbread.
Nose twitching, she sussed out nothing resembling ginger. Oh well. Can't get everything she wanted on her birthday, but she did see a bowl of a red liquid. Must be blood. She licked at the fluid, disgusting several nearby guests, but the taste tingled her buds.
She smacked a couple of times at the sugary and light flavoring. With a shrug, she plunged her face within the bowl, sucking.
Owlis shouted, "Cyras, get down from there."
"But I'm thirsty."
Owlis said, "Now."
Cyras pouted and stared at the grass a couple of times, back at the punch, bit down on a plate of cookies, and jumped.
Bhrook glared at Owlis. "You can't let her act like that."
"I've got an appointment. You shoot me another dirty look and that appointment is you," Owlis told her sister, making her back up.
Cyras smirked lightly after the two fought, but swam through the crowd in case anyone pursued. She saw a pond off in the distance where she could refresh herself.
But first.
She threw the plate up in the air, watched the platter flip. Growing eight fiery tails, she caught each raining cookie.
With a jump, Cyras scaled a tree. Her outfit was technically a shade of green with a dash of vomit, therefore she blended in slightly with some of the leaves. No signs of Rosod or Lilu.
However, she saw someone who looked a lot like Lilu, except larger and with stripes. As Ryvoh usually said, when she was pointing out other furious and feral beasts, "that's the saltiest of all the sea dogs." Jazmyn, mother of Lilu.
The evil persuader approached Owlis and said, "Good afternoon Owlis."
"Queen Jazmyn," Owlis regarded coolly. "I wasn't expecting you here. I figured you weren't a big fan of my little cousin."
The bane of good said, "Well, I suppose you should know that she, purposefully and intentionally, undermined my parenting. I had a lie detector which she broke while playing with Lilu."
"The lie detector determined that was a lie," Cyras spat, though not loudly enough that anyone could hear.
However, she noticed Bhrook talked with Raynfall. "Owlis is awful snippy."
Then, Cyras saw Rosod poking at bushes, inspecting grates. She couldn't filter her family out, nor Owlis and the Ender of Happiness. The talks fused together.
"You see, I calmly told Lilu that I was wondering if she ever thought about her weight."
"Owlis is always snippy, like what's her major problem, I think she gets off on treating others poorly."
"But that girl, I swear, that girl acted like nothing you've ever seen. She yelled at me and freaked out on me. That is MY child,"
"She wouldn't let us act like that when we were kids, Bhrook."
"-and she's the one who ran away from home. She doesn't think I ever wished I could run away from her."
"Uh-huh, yes Jazmyn."
Why can't anybody here shut up, Cyras thought.
Pupils narrowed, she ran down the tree. Pause. Should she stay up and watch Rosod, no Rosod's a big girl, she can handle herself. She'll find her, not the other way around. But maybe Cyras should stay on the tree and scout.
Screaming internally, Cyras burst towards the pond, some people nearly jumping back.
As she hit the pond she took one cookie and took a chunk out the middle instead of the sides. No chewing. Swallow and then she took a few angry pants and took a proper bite out of the sides. And also, she simply dropped some cookies, knowing she would eat them later.
The pond was secluded with no one near except for some fish. Lilies and poppies that filtered water quality and added some privacy. Good, Cyras was hungry. She lapped up some water before she jumped and immersed herself.
Smirking at one fish, a quite big goldfish, she blasted jets of flames from her paws. The steam-powered fox spiraled around, bit, and flew out.
She dropped the fish near the punch bowl, which had been refilled. When a Crimson lady fainted, Cyras, feeling a bit more hesitant about the blood on her mouth, knew she messed up.
Owlis said, "Cyras."
Cyras bolted.
"Cyras!"

The violet inventor, Daybreak, entered the party officially with Rosod accompanying him, as well as Orch.
Rosod said, "Excuse me, sir, may I see your backpack?"
Daybreak said, "Uh, well you see." He saw his brother nod for reassurance. "Oh of course, but there are important documents here, very important." He gave her the backpack and asked Orch, "That was a worker."
"Don't stress much," Orch said, "we'll be out of this country in no time. Thanks for taking me back, honestly, I should have realized your genius."
"I'm sorry as well, Orch," Daybreak said, "but I'm glad we have no hard feelings between us."
"What a sucker," Rosod mumbled, rolling her eyes, as she met up with Lilu. "Okay, now let's begin looking."
With the bag unzipped, the two girls rummaged for anything remotely interesting about the blueprints. Their eyes bulged.
"Did you see anything about lie detectors?" Rosod asked.
"Not a thing," Lilu told her.
"Well that's not very good," Rosod said.
***
In the basement of the palace, Ahmond sat alone in the darkness, listening as the song of the harmonica played. Her fox wolf cousin twisted and turned as she breathed in, giving each note a bit of power, that resonated throughout the first level of prisons.
The door opened as Maypol, the hyena guard, said, "That's enough from you." She grabbed the wolf by her arm and Mosor screeched as she was taken away.
Ahmond said, "Great, now she's probably getting lined up."
A shadow fell over the grate. "Ahmond!"
Cyras' face was between the bars of the grate, and she dangled a nearby vine from the stones. "Ahmond, I'm busting you out of here. Go ahead and grab this."
Ahmond said, "Where are the others?"
"Don't know, don't care!"
"I'm not very good at climbing ropes." A loud slap snapped her out of her misgivings. She bit down and tried scaling with her feet, getting up as high as she could.
"How are we getting past this grate issue?" Ahmond asked.
"This issue is actually quite terrible in my opinion," Cyras said, as she pushed a small metal ring through the gaps. Ahmond slipped her middle finger through. "Break through the bars with this."
As another echo came throughout the tunnels, Ahmond knocked on the bars. "Ow, my knuckle!" And then she fell, hitting and smashing through the bed.
"What's with all this ruckus!"
A guard was stomping through the hallways.
"Amplify, Ahmond."
"Uh..." Ahmond realized she could break through the bars on her cell door. With her Amplificate power, she empowered the metal on her ring. She scrambled for the door, prepared a punch, but a guard reached first, swinging open.
As Maypol stood in front of her, Ahmond's fist uppercut her jaw.
Maypol flew in the air, landing unconscious.
Ahmond blinked a few times.
Cyras said, "Ahmond, get up here now."
Prisoners usually came into and out of the palace's jails by going through a basement hatch. Ahmond stumbled through. She saw Cyras biting and ripping off pieces of fabric.
"Cyras," Ahmond said, "You're, um, ripping your clothes off."
"I know, and I hate these clothes, and I hate how everyone is talking!" She ripped off the last pieces of garment and threw the entire dress on the floor, before spitting on the corpse. "Now, stay with me."
***
Owlis stood by the punch bowl, her eyes half-lidded. She stared deep, at her reflection, until she heard a voice. Jazmyn.
"Greeting Empress Owlis. I managed to miss you in the crowd. Anyway, I believe we were having a talk about the issue of child discipline."
Owlis thought, I can't believe she's still talking at me.
"Lilu is the one who runs away, and yet she still expects that I should be the villain. And I feel like I'm a horrible mother who didn't raise her right because she has no respect."
"Oh, I don't think THAT makes you a horrible mother," Owlis said.
"Why thank you. What I do know is that seems like there's a lot more disrespect these days, you know." She took a swig of punch that Cyras put her face and tongue in.
Owlis thought, You literally crashed your mom's carriage and were known for coming home a little more than happy. Your daughter, mouths off on occasion.
Cyras walked past both, sporting nothing.
Jazmyn double-took at Cyras. liquid sprayed out of her mouth and nostrils at hose-like pressure. "Owlis, why is that uncouth, unsophisticated, backward-"
"Backward?" Cyras asked.
"-Child running around butt-naked?"
Owlis said, "Well presumably because she took her clothes off. Also Cyras- Where did she go?"
Cyras ran across the flowers and onto a stage with musicians and said, "Play me a good song boys and girls." She grabbed a microphone. "Because I've got something I gotta say."
Jazmyn asked, "What is that girl doing?"
Owlis said, "Oh something she'll regret in a moment, I'm sure."
Cyras said, "I would like to tell all of you the truth, in a way you're all comfortable with."
"Sour Grapes
May make you whine
But Grapes of Wrath
Make them taste fine.
Lost in yourself
The Grapes of Wrath
Only knows that I'm
Two steps ahead."
Lilu said, "Wait a minute, she's talking about someone." She saw Daybreak in the audience, waiting in line for his presentation.
"I take your superstitions
I fool you without remorse
Just trust machinations
That celebrities endorse
Lost in yourself
The Grapes of Wrath
Only knows that I'm
Two steps ahead"
Rosod said, "Wait, this is a code, she's obviously calling out our little Violet friend."
"Are you stupid or something?" Lilu asked, "Of course she is, and look at how close he is." Daybreak was only a couple of steps from the spotlight.
"A couple steps," Lilu realized.
"THE GRAPES OF WRATH
I am your anger
I break your cage
I subsist on you
I feel your rage
I am the grapes of wrath.
And I'm two, steps... ahead!"
Lilu pushed Daybreak two steps ahead and Cyras jumped at him. Daybreak flinched. Cyras twisted midair. Her arms wrapped around Daybreak's neck and as she fell, all 30 pounds of her brought Daybreak down.
Face crashing, Daybreak ate mud.
Owlis shouted, "Cyras, that is enough!"
"No, we're just getting started," Cyras shouted, her eyes glowing. "Let's get this started," she said as she circled her quarry.
Daybreak struggled on his knees and said, "That was assault and I could sue the crown for that."
Cyras said, "Then let's make a quick bet. I'll give you as much money as you want for your next project so long as you can beat me in a game." She tilted her head in an eerie manner. "I'm gonna prove your lie detectors are fake in front of the crowd, right here."
Orch scratched his head, not sure how this fit in with their plans, while Ahmond hid behind him.
Daybreak glared and said, "Fine."
Cyras jumped back on the stage and said, "Here are the rules, someone get a lie detector up here."
Daybreak said, "No need, I brought my own, so no tampering."
"Oh, I wasn't expecting that I could tamper with this." Cyras was gonna tell the full truth. The sun reached the hills.
Merry Summer Solstice. However, I did calculations and technically the 27th is Cyras' true birthday.

Such You and I
✴︎♈︎ SUCH YOU AND I ♈︎✴︎
2.8k words. In which Valerius worries about Anatole and finds it impossible to be the Consul in front of him. When it comes to him, he will always be his uncle. He will always be Valeriy. Set as a companion piece to ‘Creature Comfort’.
This mentions Jamil, Alec and Leon, who belong to @apprenticealec.
“Clean water sources, especially if we can get a way to pool the infected water back so we can study it are a priority, the chain supply for the flooded district completely broke, and you need to speak to the Guild of Merchants about it. A new group of nurses has been taken to the Lazaret this morning, and according to three different accounts we should get more court magicians to see whether or not this disease has a magical origin. Did I miss anything, Consul?”
Valerius watched Anatole as he made a sprint outside of the room, considering having him stopped. He was about to but decided against it. Bringing Anatole by force back would only make whatever had gotten into him worse, though he knew his nephew enough to have a couple of ideas about what it could be.
Foolish boy, he thought, yet kept his assessments to himself despite a couple of tries from Lucio to rouse a reply out of him. He would rather keep his nephew away from his former hate-fuck’s mouth, thanks very much.
He had no choice but to continue this horrid meeting on his own.
His anger towards Aelius was measured: it was about leaving a meeting in such a manner and allowing his feelings to get the best of him, leaving him alone in an useless, frustrating position. How dare he leave him when he knew he had begun to hate his job so much, the fallout of it becoming too big for the satisfactions it brought too quickly. Valerius didn’t mind being ignored, he needn’t people agreeing with him to assert himself; he hated being embarrassed and being played a fool in a Court where he was the only adept Courtier.
He was responsible for almost every office and he was already about to go postal about it, no need for his nephew to leave a meeting in such an unbecoming fashion.
So yes, as the Consul he was furious, but as an uncle, not as Valerius of the Cassano of Vesuvia but as Valeriy Radošević, brother of Vlad, son (sort of) of Florentino and Mircea, he was worried sick.
‘Lilu’ had stellar Court records. Of course, there were a couple of incidents here and there, but overall no one else of the younger Court members did as well as Anatole. He had checked, being the Consul allowed him some leeway in demanding certain papers to be delivered to his desk.
Anatole staying was less of a matter of proving himself (his notes and his record keeping were impeccable, and if something were to be missing, he knew his nephew would know how to make up for it), and more of a matter of strategy. Lucio, whether anyone wanted it or not, was going to die. Perhaps the Plague would take all of before it took him, but he couldn’t outlast it. If he died, Satrinava would become the Countess and in that case, Valerius planned to book his office and leave in the hands of Anatole because no ambition of his was big enough to stand having that woman as her boss.
Incompetent goodie-two shoes. Lucio should’ve never been the Count, he didn’t have any sort of political capacity and whatever old man Spada was on when he appointed him as his successor proved to be a stronger drug than those Valerius was aware existed. But Nadia, a Prakran, former war enemy of Vesuvia taking the position was suspicious. What were her territorial ambitions? What was the true position of her desires for the City? She couldn’t both be Lucio’s wife and someone who pretended to care about Vesuvians.
It didn’t even work as a publicity stunt, and Valerius knew all about caring for publicity. But she was good, and he couldn’t stand her, so the sooner Anatole took his duties from him when Lucio finally left this world with a pile of unsolved bullshit for them to deal with, the better.
Anatole was supposed to be there to prove himself a worthy Consul to Satrinava, in case she took over and decided bringing someone from outside was better than having a Cassano for a Consul. A friendly reminder of how inadvisable that was, so to speak: the County was Vesuvia’s head, but the Consulship was its neck, and the head turned wherever the neck wanted it to.
Even through his machinations, Valeriy-The-Uncle came through. Anatole was grieving. They all were. Anatole grieved Paris, his maternal aunt, who had died from a blood disease unrelated to the Plague. He grieved the death of Vesuvians, he grieved the death of Anzano and was worried about Amparo who hadn’t caught the plague while tending to them by a miracle. Anatole had too many duties which weren’t his responsibility, like Valerius himself, and yet shouldered them with more excellence than he himself did. He tended to keep longer hours and he still grieved.
There was also Alec, Jamil’s protegée and Anatole’s friend, who had died under Dr. Devorak’s care — while that had been her own decision, it had made Anatole and the Doctor stand on weird ground, all of the sudden. He grieved that too.
Valerius was sorry for it. He didn’t pity his nephew, he wasn’t stupid. Anatole was never to be the subject of anyone’s pity and if anyone ever did have the gall to have such an inferior feeling towards him, then they’d have to have some words about it with Valerius. Instead, he was sad about Anatole. His little pest was never meant to be a creature of hardship, yet the world cared little for that. His little pest deserved to be happy, more than most.
And his little pest had run directly into a plague ridden City at the mere mention of his friends’ sadness, and Valerius suspected it was so he didn’t have to deal with his own.
That, or Anatole was running back to Leon. If he was, Anatole was more of a fool than Valerius ever thought his nephew capable of being. Granted, he didn’t always understand his choices in partners, and he suspected neither did Anatole about his own. Though meaning no offence to Jamil’s friend — for once — he truly did think Anatole could do better than Leon.
He could, for example, find someone who was willing to stay for him, withstand his shitstorm of a job with him, not out of selfish interest but out of love for Anatole. He deserved someone who thought the sun rose and set with him, and the moon shone to illuminate him only. Call him a sap, an old romantic, but Valerius believed it, and he didn’t believe Leon was capable of it.
After the meeting he settled in the library, giving notice to his office to please let him know if his nephew came back. He picked a book at random and paid absolutely no attention as he waited, looking out of one of the windows instead. He supposed it was a bit hypocritical of him to judge Leon for that, when he knew Jamil was in town and he couldn’t even get up his own buttocks to see his friend.
“But it’s different,” he muttered to himself.
Was it? He was going to stand by thinking it was, and it wasn’t like it didn’t put him to shame. He was well aware he should be there for Jamil, or at least to try and reach out; however their history was different, more complex, more difficult. Leon wasn’t the reason Anatole had dramatically declared at the age of 21 he would never marry, pretending he didn’t wish for romantic partnership. Anatole wasn’t out there refusing such connection because he thought deep down, he was doomed to repeat terrible relationship patterns.
It didn’t matter most people in his family had had good, healthy relationships. His parents, his actual parents, Florentino’s Cousin and Mircea’s brother, had been a dumpster fire waiting for an explosion to befall on them, and he was their son. What if nature won over nurture? He didn’t want to find out. Anatole wasn’t like him in that regard… or was he? Was he like himself and his father who feared good things would elude them and therefore found a way to cope about it? Could it be that Anatole’s way to cope was hope? Was it trying no matter the stakes? Was pulling himself up with an inner strength and clarity Valerius had seldom seen in anyone?
Anatole couldn’t be that way. If the Gods, whomever those were, had to spare someone of that, it would have to be his nephew, right?
Two hours passed and Valerius decided to put the book he had picked up where he had found it. After confirming Aelius had not come back to the Palace, he retired to his home, deciding to walk the way between the Palace and the Palazzo, with Anatole still on his mind. His brother and his sister-in-law would not be happy when Valerius returned on his own with no idea of what it had been of Anatole but a highly probable guess.
Still, a highly probably guess was the same of no guess at all when it came to worried parents.
“What do you think of it?” He asked them as they waited.
His brother’s eyes furrowed in concentration in the same way Anatole’s did. “I think,” Vlad said, “he’s old enough to know what he’s doing, Valeriy.”
“So you’re not worried?”
Vlad snorted. “Oh, I’m worried sick, alright. There’s an epidemic outside, but I also know that Anatole never does things without a reason, even when he’s being impulsive.”
“Now, I wouldn’t call him impulsive. Foolish, perhaps.”
“Hey!” Louisa said, throwing a dressing pillow to Valerius. She was the only one who could ever get away with such an act. “My son is not a fool.”
“Running after Leon is a foolish reason.”
“Wasn’t Leon the musician, friend of your friend?”
“He is. You met him for Anatole’s last birthday.”
“The one Nemesi said he didn’t know Toly liked them older, wicked sense of humour, wore a very pretty dress?”
“That one, yes.”
Vlad and Louisa looked at each other, the former grimacing, the latter sighing. Louisa spoke first. “Val, darling, go to bed, I think this is one of those matters Anatole will have to sort out on his own. Don’t be too hard on him, he’s going through a lot. I am worried about him, but I’m more worried about him having a nervous episode than anything else. And if you’re worried about his safety, do remember Anatole has your temper and a wonderful proclivity to make people trapped into situations with him that they will later regret.”
“I can’t understand how you can be so resigned.”
Louisa shrugged. “I’ve been in dangerous situations per my own choosing, and I was exiled for it, and you know this. I am worried but I also trust my son’s capacities. Let’s just say I understand Anatole in a way you two could never do, just like there are certain things about him you two understand in a way I’ll never be able to, as well.
“I will never be able to understand his particular brand of intensity, as much as I love it, respect it, cherish it and find it enlightening, and you will never be able to understand what it’s like to risk your life for that which you love in the same way I will.”
“Two words, Lulu, dearling, Balkovian and war.”
“I think she’s right Valeriy.”
“Of course you side with your wife.”
“Idiot,” Vlad said as he kicked his brother’s foot, “Balkovia is different, and you weren’t there in the war anyway, your duties as the Consul called you too son, and in my case, it’s not love for the place, per se, which made me stay. I am proud of how everything turned out all things considered, and I am really fucking done with the Federation every day of my life nonetheless, and I don’t want to do anything with its politics. I do my job for the people I think are less terrible than the other, and that’s it. You know how Anatole feels about this City. My son could fucking bleed himself dry for it if no one stopped him, and you know it.”
“This City isn’t worth it. Don’t give me that look, Consul Cassano my ass. It isn’t… and neither is Leon.”
“Is Jamil?”
“Vladislav, I am warning you.”
“What I’m saying, you temperamental idiot, is that we measure what we love in different ways that don’t always make sense for the people who don’t love them.”
“How is that supposed to be soothing? How is that supposed to not worry me? Anatole deserves better.”
Vlad stood up, looking down at his brother with exasperation, using every inch over him that he had in his advantage. “Maybe he does, but I don’t know Leon. I do know how it feels to be judged by people higher and mightier than you solely because of an accident of circumstance — and so should you Valeriy. That you act like it doesn’t mean Jamil’s mother—“
“Say one more word, Vladislav, I dare you.”
“Oh, do you?”
“That is enough!” Louisa’s voice rang through the parlour. “We’ve never micromanaged our son, we’re not about to start now. Vlad, we should go to bed, your brother can do as he pleases. Or at least, we should wait for Anatole somewhere where he won’t find you too arguing about him, because if you make my son feel guilty I won’t speak to either of you for a week.”
Both of them dropped it. One was married to Louisa, the other had known her for years and was one of the few people who got to see the full extent of who Valerius was. His sister in law had been nothing but supportive throughout all his time knowing her, many times being a comforting presence with her witty commentary about what to do with politicians and Courtiers Valerius didn’t like. Fighting with her was tempting because right now he would fight with anyone, but it was a stupid move.
The truth was Louisa was right — not that he would admit it right now. The only physical place Valerius had ever been happy in was the Radošević Vineyard in one of the Balkovian peninsulas. His relationship with Vesuvia was complicated at best, obligatory at worst and when it came to musicians who brought with them their adventures of the world and easy laugh, and very warm feelings maybe they weren’t so different, after all.
Anatole arrived well into the night, still crying. Trying to make the least fuss possible, he tried to get to his bedroom through the Consul’s home office and then the library. Valeriy never used that office anyway, so there was no reason for him to be there, or anyone at all. Yet, because his luck couldn’t get any worse, he was there, sitting on the desk, skimming over a book he closed shut with unnecessary force when Anatole made it through the door. Of course his uncle was angry with him.
“Listen—”
“What on earth were you thinking?”
“I wasn’t, Valeriy.”
“You clearly weren’t. You left me stranded in a meeting, which you left running, after talking back at me as if I were what.”
“You’re not going to tell me off for snapping at the Count?”
“Ostentatious of you to assume I care what happens to him.”
They both held each other’s gaze. Anatole’s eyes were puffy, his nose was red with cold. It was so obvious his nephew had cried all the way back from City Centre. Valerius sighed, he found it really, really hard to be the Consul when Anatole would always be his nephew.
“But more importantly,” he said, his voice softer as he left the book aside and came down from the desk, “you worried me sick. Aelius what was that?”
The dam broke. Anatole’s lip trembled as he tried to speak but instead of words, tears and crying overtook him. He cried with silent sobs, trying not to make a sound at all, as if it would all go away if he was quiet enough. It reminded him of himself, it reminded him of his older brother. Perhaps he had been correct and they weren’t so different after all.
“Oh, come here, just don’t stain my shirt.”
“I come from outside.”
“I don’t care.”
“Valeriy—”
“I said I didn’t care.”
Anatole gave in and hugged his uncle, who was well aware his nephew was passing his mid-twenties, but crying in his arms it was like Anatole was 10 again and asking why did he have to be so weird.
“My foolish, wonderful nephew.”
“I know, I’m an idiot.”
“No, no you’re not, and in any case, you’re not a fool much different than myself… How was—” no, he couldn’t ask about him. Instead, he sighed into his nephew’s hair. “Why don’t we go let your parents know you’re home alright?”
“Alright,” Anatole sniffled. “Were my notes okay for the meeting?”
“They were spectacular, they always are,” Valerius was’t lying. “Now, no more work, let’s go find my brother and your mother.”

Oh my, how the time flies! I certainly hope this post finds you happy and healthy and enjoying the season. Keeping my fingers crossed for my mother and I, so far so good. My mom did come down with a relatively mild case of the flu in November (she had gotten a flu shot) so she wasn’t able to enjoy Thanksgiving with the family, but things are looking on track for Christmas.
This year I crocheted a little something for my family, but I can’t show you what I made because I do have a couple family members that read these posts and that would give away the surprise. It will just have to wait until after Christmas – but that doesn’t mean I don’t have something to show you. I found this adorable elf, and being in the spirit, I decided to give her a go. The “Free Pattern: Small Christmas Elf” from Kristi Tullus is so cute, but I saw a couple photos of what other people created and decided to give her a little more finished look with white edging on her hat, dress and shoes. I also put pipe cleaners in her arms and legs so they could bend a little.
I’ve said I’m making stuffed animals for all my mother’s great grandchildren, and two of the six have been completed. And now – just in time for the holidays – Ta Da! – the Ballerina Bunny for Emily. Emily is the newest addition to our family, being born just last June, so she won’t be getting to play with this bunny for quite a while. I’m sure when her parents feel she’s ready, the bunny will be given a warm welcome.
I bought the pattern for “Bunny Lilu” from Tanya Kostochenkova of Crochet Friends Lab on Etsy. I lucked out because she was having a half price sale; at this writing she has a 25% off sale going. For the most part the pattern was well written, and I was able to figure out the couple of glitches without too much trouble.
Bunny Lilu from Crochet Friends Lab
My Ballerina Bunny turned out a little larger (16″ versus almost 12″) because I used DK weight yarn and a D 3.25mm hook, but that was fine with me. I wasn’t a fan of the two little bows by the ears, so I used the “Crochet Hearts” hair bow from Katrina Payne at Rebel Skein (don’t you love that name?). I did use joints for her legs, but if I make another I’ll follow what the designer had in mind. She created the joints by putting buttons on the outside of the “hips” and sewing through the body and both legs.
My version of “Bunny Lilu”
Well, this is my last post of 2019. I hope you all had a terrific year. I wish you a wonderful holiday season and an even better 2020! And of course, Happy Crocheting!
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! Oh my, how the time flies! I certainly hope this post finds you happy and healthy and enjoying the season.

Prvi Dan održive mode završen je prezentacijom jednog sasvim novog modnog koncepta pod imenom Biro 354c, a iza kog stoji dizajnerka i kostimografkinja Ana Trošić Trajković. Projekat Biro 354c je pionirski poduhvat na našim prostorima koji podrazumeva iznajmljivanje dizajnerskih komada s domaće modne scene, kao i redizajn vintage komada.
Svečanom otvaranju ovog novog koncepta prisustovali su mnogi poznati dizajneri poput Jasmine Sanader, Danijele Biškup (LILU Shoes), Nevene Kragić, Budislave Keković i Tijane Pavlov,

Two bodies yet two major differences as Raum stepped into the establishment again - though not a nightclub this time, but Lilu's personal home, an invitation for drink and conversation - the sex fiend couldn't help but play a bit on the others desires that have been a little too juicy to ignore again. Thus, on the left was a lilu dressed to the nines, a three piece suit, cufflinks of gold, earrings of thick jewels, his hair tied back and professional as if he was about to go be visiting a Queen, never the less the other Demon at the informal place such as his home. Shoes were spotless loafers, ankles on display just under the hem of tailored iron-pressed black pants. His blazer was fitted to the waist, tailors to stretch just right around chest and peak lapel pressed tight to his form. White blouse with a blackened tie and tie pin of gold to match the rest of his outfit.
He was smiling with unknown secrets, but holding up a silver tray either way - wine wiped down from dust and two large wine glasses were being taken over to the blond. "Take a seat, sir." Voice was only slightly compulsive, not to fully control but to tickle his senses, to brush wisps of his nape hair up with a voice that wasn't behind him but felt like it could of been.
On the other side of the room settled the secondary Lilu, tight pencil skirt to the mid-thigh, a split on the left thigh to show of tanned, silk touched stockings that tucked slender ankles into high heeled shoes that meant business. It went well with how his blouse was opened to mid-sternum, showing cleavage and his blazer, just tighter around the upper waist, giving him the faux glance of breasts... Rolled up sleeves, folded neatly at the elbow and shawl lapels pressed with golden-red trinkets that matched the red lipstick, dash of eyeshadow and mostly the neck collar about his throat... The blackened blouse here stood out the most amongst his pallid skin on display, the rest of it white, opposite to his suit counterpart
They didn't hold anything, but the figure did settle upon breakfast table stool. Crossing legs slowly and surely to stroke his own legs down the length before settling in with easy elegance - though his entire thigh was on display it was still tasteful. Hair was brushed over one side, all loose and semi-wavy as lips nursed straw to a daiquiri mixture. Though, their eyes trailed over Raum's frame with ease...
It was a tease, the son of Lilith couldn't help but tease such a being in his home, though it wasn't long until things melted away within a haze of lust and desire - instead, allowing Lilu's real form to be formed on the seat besides the Raum - eyes a glowering shimmer as he released the trick of two delights... Though, he dress wear wasn't anything new to him, after all - his legs were indeed within the tights prior on the feminine suited copy, but his long blouse was from the male side. Worn more like a dress - top, and hair a mixture of those two, a sex mussed low tail with long fringe. The collar and make-up did remain however, he did enjoy these shades on himself...
"I didn't touch you this time, so you can't kill me." A soft purse of his lips, a mirthful pout as he adjusted his legs to cross them much like the stool figure once did to instead reach for bottle and glass to pour a healthy amount in for his dearest visitor. "Drink, dear?" As his tail coiled under a silver box to open in offering of a cigar and match box...
Entering Lilu's space was always something of a dice roll. Being capable of illusions and theatrical to a fault, Raum was always aware in the back of his mind that not everything he perceived around him was true. Lilu could manipulate the skin off you if you weren't careful. Raum was always careful. And yet, it didn't stop him from indulging in whatever charade Lilu deigned to show him, as long as he kept his wits about him.
Blue eyes darted back and forth between the two version of Lilu - comparing, contrasting, appreciating, like he would two different art pieces by the same artist. It didn't matter to him which facade the other used; masculine or feminine. Raum found both tempting in different ways, and knew that truly Lilu was a master at either or both if he pleased. The attention to detail was what appealed to Raum most however, and he couldn't stop the little quirk at the corner of his lips as he followed the suggestion, indeed taking a seat without taking his eyes away from the pair.
He was silent, knowing that whatever he said would no doubt escape his lips husked and tinged with desire, not of his own making but in response to the energy flooding the room. Raum didn't want his own words to be used against him, but his silence wasn't angry - rather somewhat amicable, amused, at the play.
The illusion finally melted away once he was sat down, and Raum stiffened a little in surprise to find the real Lilu sitting next to him. As he suspected, he was a somewhat chaotic mix of both the masculine and feminine forms, and somehow it suited him utterly. Only now Raum realised he was clutching the little potted orchid in his hands too tightly. He set it down on the table in front of them - an offering as any guest should when coming to someone's home. A huff of mirth left him and he shook his head.
"Oh, spare me. I'm not in a killing mood tonight," he answered, the silent ...yet hanging in the air afterwards. He took the glass of wine automatically when it was offered, a little routine they'd made a thousand times. A single savouring sip before he put it down.
"Besides, your little show wasn't so gauche this time. I think you might be improving. Who'd have thought?" Lighting the cigar with practiced ease, Raum held it between his teeth, leaning against Lilu's shoulder with a sigh. Any contact with the other never failed to make goosebumps erupt on his skin, but it was nothing he couldn't bear just for the simple comfort of another demon's company - and one he was quite familiar with. A moment or two passed before Raum's fingers plucked at the tail swaying near his vicinity.
"I do quite miss the convenience of these features," he confessed, blowing smoke upwards while his palm trailed down the tail. "Perhaps once I escape the prison of this body I won't remember how to use them."

The Life of a Dog Actor

The infamous saying, “Never work with animals or children,” was first spoken by W.C. Fields as a tip for those humans being forced to share the stage and screen. It is often still muttered by cast or crew members when one or the other shows up on set. And that means Briana Messerschmidt, community outreach director of Hollywood Paws hears it a lot!
Hollywood Paws is a Los Angeles-based company that helps dogs (and their humans) in almost every aspect of becoming an animal actor or model — careers that have a shared skillset. “In people world it’s different, but in dog world it’s the exact same thing,” Briana explains.
Briana started working at Hollywood Paws around 10 years ago. Before that, she went to a specialized school to learn how to train animals. She is also an associate marriage and family therapist with skills that, no doubt, help when faced with someone quoting Mr. Fields!
The first dog actor Briana Messerschmidt, community outreach director of Hollywood Paws, owned was Belgian Malinois Lilu. Photography courtesy of Briana Messerschmidt
Lilu the Belgian Malinois
The first four-legged actor Briana owned was Lilu, a brilliant Belgian Malinois. In general, the industry is vain, Briana explains, which means Lilu didn’t have the same opportunities as other breeds would. “Cute,” “sweet,” “family dogs,” are who usually book the jobs. In advertisements, casting is looking for a dog who will catch your attention and then will pass the spotlight to the product being featured. Dogs like Lilu, who tend to be associated with police or military working dogs, just don’t fit that description.
Even with industry bias against her, Lilu booked a number of jobs due to her impressive training. In 2013, Lilu showed off her skills on the set of Guinness World Records Unleashed by removing 20 people’s socks in one minute. She could have done more, but there weren’t any socked feet left on stage. Later in the same year, she went on the TV show Katie and set the record for the most shoes removed in one minute. Both records still stand.
Today Briana works with her Golden Retriever, Coral, who has already been featured in an ad. Photography courtesy of Briana Messerschmidt
Coral hits the big time
When Lilu went to live with her human dad full time, it took a while before Briana was ready for another furry family member. When she was, she opted for a breed that has the best chance of booking work — a Golden Retriever. “The dog everyone wants … the iconic family dog with an easy temperament that everyone wants to put in their ad.”
Enter to the stage, Coral. Coral is a year old, and her doggie resume is already filling up.
“As a trainer I can’t help myself to train sometimes. It just comes naturally,” Briana explains. In her trainer role, Briana tells future actor dogs’ owners to not worry about getting any gigs until the dog is at least 8 months old. For those first eight months it’s key to world isn’t a scary place is key to them succeeding in the business.
For “training” as a puppy, Coral was taken out every day and everywhere, including active sets where her mom was working with clients. Then Coral got lucky. Whistle contacted the agency looking for a Golden Retriever puppy. At that point Coral, who was around 4½ months old, hadn’t done much specific training, but she was confident and that’s what she needed to do the job. Just like that, Coral became one of the dogs featured on Whistle’s website.
Coral knew the basics the director was looking for. “That’s all they ever really want on set — a dog being a dog, but they want specific things they do on cue.” Basics include “sit,” “down,” “on your feet,” “circle,” “on your side,” “barking,” “taking a bow,” “head up” and “head down,” which later in the dog’s training include focusing on the end of a stick called an aim stick, which allows the trainer to get higher ups and focus off herself.
What makes the basics more difficult is the dog’s ability to do it a good distance from the trainer and with a high level of distraction. A dog can be in a scene while her trainer is 8 feet or more away, often behind the camera and surrounded by other humans where she is expected to perform on cue while other actors and crew members are working around her.
Photography courtesy of Briana Messerschmidt
Since her first job, Coral has learned to hit her mark. For dogs, a mark is usually a physical thing that she knows she has to go to, stop and perform on. Briana has added “watch me” and “watch it,” and she can place food in the scene and Coral will sit on her mark and stare at the food — without eating it!
One day she will be as good as her sister Lilu and be able to perform all of her skills while focused on something, like delicious food. Her self-control even includes being able to hold something in her mouth and dropping it on cue — again, without eating it!
For Coral, her acting work is a fun game where she is rewarded with love, praise, treats and the spotlight. I bet even Mr. Fields would think more like Emma Thompson if he had had the pleasure of working with Lilu or Coral. Thompson edited the comedian’s quote by saying, “There is that thing about not working with animals and children — I don’t think that’s true. Although you should never work with donkeys.
