The Red Circle
Published in 1911 as a two-parter, this is the penultimate story we'll be covering His Last Bow, leaving just the titular story there.
This does sound rather like "The Veiled Lodger", doesn't it?
These days, you'd have to check the immigration status of your tenants. In 1902, really not an issue. Although anti-immigrant sentiment was definitely there and growing.
Those strange coded personal messages - some even encrypted - very much existed in newspapers back then. Once radio had become a thing, the British would use them on radio broadcasts to Occupied Europe in the Second World to get messages to the resistance movements. Including the "get ready" and "go" codes for the mass sabotage operations that preceded Operation Overlord in 1944.
"Timekeepers" were used for recording arrivals and departures at a site, including that of staff for the purposes of paying wages, determining lateness etc.
Great Orme Street is more properly called Great Ormond Street, located in Bloomsbury. It is best known for the world-famous children's hospital called Great Ormond Street Hospital. They have a permanent UK copyright to Peter Pan which gives them a right to royalties for publications, adaptations, performances etc. The US copyright on the original version expires next year. If anyone wants to do a LfW retelling of the original book, it would be nice to contact them and arrange a donation. They're a very good organisation.
"Art for Art’s sake" was a French slogan from the latter half of the 19th century. You may know its Latin version - ars gratia artis - as the motto of film studio MGM.
The light flashing message gets a whole chapter covering it in Klinger's annotated version, as it's been heavily discussed by scholars. Basically, it would take multiple minutes to send that message.
The Pinkerton detective agency did a lot of investigative work in its early days, both criminal investigation and more nefarious stuff to aid strike-breaking. The latter got the US government banned from hiring them as such in the 1893 Anti-Pinkerton Act. They are still involved in anti-union stuff today.
Much of Notting Hill had become increasingly slum-like by this time as an influx of people led to houses built for one family being split to hold far more; the idea when the area was built was for the middle classes to live there, but they didn't buy the properties. It later attract large numbers of Afro-Caribbean immigrants in the post-war era, partly as the notorious slum landlord Peter Rachman was prepared to rent to them while others weren't. This growing ethnic tension culiminated race riots in 1958, with white "Teddy Boys" attacking West Indian homes. Since then, the slums have been cleared and the area has gentrified quite a bit.
It is also home to the annual Notting Hall carnival every August since 1965 (bar 2020 and 2021), which around 2 million people attend. The Metropolitan Police have moved from active hostility to active cooperation in its running and there will be photos of officers dancing with those in the parade at any given carnival. The reputation for violence is unjustified and arguably fuelled by racism - while there were frequently arrests for violence, drugs and weapons offences, on a pro-rata basis, the arrest rate is about the same as the Glastonbury Festival.
The Carbonari ("charcoal makers") were secret revolutionary societies active in what would become Italy in the early 19th century. After failed uprisings in 1831, the various Italian governments cracked down hard on them and they were effectively eliminated. They were not really engaged in protection rackets.
Dynamite was patented by Alfred Nobel in 1867. Being a good deal more stable than nitrogyclerine - although storage is important as old dynamite is a good deal less stable - it became popular for terrorists and criminals, with a series of bombings by Irish republicans between 1881 and 1885 leading to the formation of Special Branch.
Covent Garden is home to the Royal Opera House.

Copenhagen’s Minimum Sustainability Requirements Adopted For London Fashion Week NEWGEN Brands - Skywire
The British Fashion Council (BFC), which organises London Fashion Week (LFW), has confirmed that the clothing trade show will become the first of the “big four” to adopt Copenhagen Fashion Week (CPHFW)’s framework for minimum brand sustainability requirements.
Schedule set out for the new criteria’s implementation
The minimum sustainability standards for Copenhagen – which LFW will now introduce for brands that are part of the NEWGEN incubation scheme – include having a formal Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategy and a diversity and inclusion policy for hiring. It is also expected under the CPHFW framework that brands use preferred materials, in addition to avoiding single-use props for fashion shows.
The framework for CPHFW was first announced in 2019, with full implementation taking effect from Autumn/Winter 2023.
In the case of London’s embrace of these standards, the requirements will be piloted throughout 2025 with brands participating in NEWGEN. Brands that seek admission to this talent initiative must already satisfy mandatory sustainability criteria.
It is expected that full implementation of the requirements will follow for all NEWGEN brands showing from January 2026. After this, the BFC will work on building out a plan enabling the framework’s more comprehensive imposition across the LFW schedule.
BFC hails “positive change across the global fashion industry”
Chief executive at the BFC, Caroline Rush – who will step down from her role in June – stated the organisation was “thrilled to align with the Copenhagen Fashion Week Sustainability Requirements across BFC NEWGEN, which builds on our existing minimum standards and reaffirms our commitment to driving positive change across the global fashion industry.”
She continued: “This partnership is a significant step in ensuring that sustainability becomes integral to the future of fashion.”
The announcement marks the latest momentous step in the BFC’s sustainability journey since the launch of its Institute of Positive Fashion (IPF) think tank in 2020.
It also does not mark the first time the organisation has followed in Copenhagen’s footsteps. It was confirmed in November 2024 that LFW would ban the use of exotic skins – such as crocodile and snake – in show collections. This made it the first of the “big four” to do so, Copenhagen having already banned exotics in March.
How will London designers and brands cope with the new requirements?
The short answer to this question might be… with relative ease, at least for some brands. The generally smaller and less established nature of many designers in London, compared to the fashion titans of Paris and Milan, may give them a simpler task in adapting their working practices to satisfy the new criteria.
However, the expenditure that will be need be incurred in meeting the requirements is likely to concern some designers. Rising costs continue to be a headache for many brands in the wake of Brexit and the COVID-19 pandemic, and the wholesale market has also seen upheaval lately.
As London Shopify Plus experts and strategic digital professionals here at Skywire London, we will keep a close eye on the ongoing sustainability evolution impacting on fashion, luxury, and lifestyle brands in the capital, and we will report the latest developments.
In the meantime, if you would appreciate help to drive forward your brand’s growth during 2025 and beyond, please don’t hesitate to contact our team.

As we look forward to fashion month 2025, here's the Big Four store for autumn/winter 2025… Fashion fanatics are gearing up for an influx of designer debuts and returning big names to hit the runways during fashion week this month. Designers will show their autumn/winter 2025 collections in February and March. Industry heavyweights and celebrities will no doubt grace the front rows. View this post on Instagram A post shared by CHANEL (@chanelofficial) Autumn/winter fashion month falls in the middle of awards season. This means some of the best looks are instantly picked up for the celebrity red carpet. Here's what to expect from New York, London, Milan, and Paris this fashion month… New York New York Fashion Week attracts some of America's most prominent fashion influencers, such as the Quann sisters (Alamy/PA) When: February 6-11 What to expect: In June 2024, the Big Four fashion weeks agreed to shift their dates back a week. However, New York decided against the changes because of a clash with a US public holiday. As a result, NYFW will now be held on 6-11 February (rather than 13-18 February, as agreed in June). This leaves a nine-day gap between New York and London Fashion Week. This gap has received mixed reviews, with some show-goers excited for a break to recover from their trans-Atlantic jet lag. In contrast, others say it will impact the attendance of more minor fashion weeks, such as Berlin and Copenhagen. Nevertheless, fashion lovers will enjoy an autumn/winter lookbook early, featuring collections from classic US designers. This includes Calvin Klein, Carolina Herrera, and Michael Kors, as well as Luar and Brandon Maxwell collections. London View this post on Instagram A post shared by Burberry (@burberry) When: February 20-24 What to expect: London Fashion Week is held biannually in February and September. It is a significant event in the global fashion industry, known for its bold creativity and cutting-edge designs. London will feature the usual suspects this year, including Emilia Wickstead, Erdem, Richard Quinn and Roksanda. Burberry remains one of the highlights of the LFW calendar. This season, designer Daniel Lee will show his latest collection. The heritage brand announced a turnaround last year. New CEO Joshua Schulman, who joined in July to succeed Jonathan Akeroyd, unveiled Burberry Forward. The plan aims to bring the brand back to where it was two years ago. It focuses on outerwear and a more diversified pricing structure. Last October, this was showcased in the 'It's Always Burberry Weather' outerwear campaign. Schulman's plan emphasized the desire for Burberry to remain a luxury brand instead of an 'accessible luxury' brand. Many were calling for this change in 2024. It is denoted as the "British Coach." Milan View this post on Instagram A post shared by Milano Fashion Week (@milanfashionweek) When: February 25-March 3 What to expect: Milan's fashion week features some of the biggest labels. Many Italian fashion houses stay put to pay homage to their roots. Italian designers will grace the Milan runways, including Fendi, Prada, Gucci, Versace, and Dolce & Gabbana. Alongside these incumbents, 'ones to watch' pepper the schedule, including London-based designer Susan Fang. She is backed by Dolce & Gabbana and is becoming known for her innovative style. View this post on Instagram A post shared by SUSAN FANG (@susanfangofficial) Campania-born designer Francesco Murano is a graduate of the prestigious IED Milan. He will also have eyes on his collection as the 2020 winner of the Who is on Next? Prize for his womenswear designs. Murano's looks are already Beyoncé-approved. They wore one of his graduate pieces to the 2020 Grammy brunch. Alberta Ferretti's new creative director, Lorenzo Serafini, is also expected to make some highly anticipated runway debuts. Missoni's new head, Alberto Caliri, will likely pay tribute to Rosita, the brand's late founder, who passed away in early January. Paris Paris Fashion Week features the industry's biggest incumbents, including Chanel (Alamy/PA) When: March 3-11 What to expect: Paris is the Big Four's concluding fashion week. The shows feature heavyweights in the industry, such as Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior, and Saint Laurent. All eyes will be on three key debuts: Sarah Burton's runway show for Givenchy, Haider Ackermann for Tom Ford, and Julian Klausner for Dries Van Noten. Loewe is one of the most notable absences from the show schedule. Instead, they opted for a co-ed presentation format. The brand was also missing from the Paris Men's schedule in January. This decision comes as speculation swirls about Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, formerly of Proenza Schouler, possibly succeeding Jonathan Anderson at the Spanish house. Alaïa is a PFW newcomer. The brand's founder, Azzedine Alaïa, previously opted out of Paris, choosing to show on his own time instead. This marks the house's first entry into the official Paris ready-to-wear schedule. View this post on Instagram A post shared by ALAÏA (@maisonalaia) Tom Ford is making a notable move this season. For the debut show under their new creative director, Haider Ackermann, the Estée Lauder-owned house is shifting from Milan to Paris. The house joins a lineup of fresh additions to the schedule, including Christopher Esber, winner of the 2024 Andam Prize. Other additions include Hodakova, recipient of the 2024 LVMH Prize for Young Designers, and Burc Akyol, an LVMH Prize finalist. Givenchy and Coperni, last presented off-calendar at Disneyland Paris, will also return this season. Ludovic de Saint Sernin is back in the French capital following a one-off show in New York for AW24 and a couture collection as guest designer for Jean Paul Gaultier. Kenzo has been absent from ready-to-wear since September 2020. They are returning alongside Marine Serre, Undercover, Off-White, and Véronique Leroy. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jean Paul Gaultier (@jeanpaulgaultier) Chanel will stage its second ready-to-wear collection designed by the studio on March 11. Matthieu Blazy's first complete collection for the house is expected in October 2025. Other significant moments include shows from Dior, Balenciaga, Chloé, Balmain, Alexander McQueen, Hermès, The Row, Victoria Beckham, Lacoste, and Stella McCartney. Saint Laurent will conclude the week on March 11. The autumn/winter 2025 women's ready-to-wear calendar features 72 shows and 37 presentations. "This calendar shows the vitality of Paris and international diversity with both established brands and promising young designers," says Pascal Morand, executive president of Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode. How Vibha is Elevating Child Development Through Innovative Education
In rural India, where educational challenges are magnified by limited resources, Vibha continues to empower educators and students alike. Through innovative programs like LeapForWord (LFW), Vibha has redefined child education and development, proving its commitment as one of the best child education NGO for underprivileged children in India.
Empowering Teachers with LeapForWord
Sunita Pawar, an experienced teacher from Jauli (Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh), began her journey with LeapForWord in 2019. Despite 17 years of teaching experience, she faced the daunting challenge of teaching first graders for the first time. With the introduction of LFW techniques, Sunita transformed her teaching approach, moving from rote learning to conceptual understanding.
She tested her students’ progress by introducing them to sixth-grade English texts. Astonishingly, six out of seven students could read up to 75% of the content, showcasing the remarkable potential of these innovative methods.
Shifting from Rote Learning to Conceptual Understanding
Traditional teaching methods, heavily reliant on memorization, often left students struggling to grasp basic concepts. However, LFW’s approach empowered Sunita to focus on comprehension and pronunciation, bringing a dramatic shift in her classroom.
– Reading Proficiency: 60-70% of her students could read English fluently, a stark contrast to previous years.
– Confidence in Reading Aloud: Students who once hesitated now read stories aloud with confidence.
– Overall Academic Growth: By the year’s end, her students demonstrated at least a 60% improvement in their English skills.
Success Beyond Boundaries: Varad Pawar’s Achievement
One of the most inspiring stories is that of Varad Pawar, a first-grade student. During the 2020 lockdown, Varad competed in an English reading contest organized by the Bombay Communist Public Trust (BCPT). He secured first place in Maharashtra by flawlessly reading 17-18 letter words.
This extraordinary achievement not only boosted Sunita’s confidence but also highlighted the effectiveness of LFW techniques. Varad’s story went viral, garnering over 100,000 views and proving that even students from rural Zilla Parishad schools can outperform peers from urban convent schools.
Innovative Learning Techniques That Inspire
Sunita adopted LFW’s weekly quizzes and activity-based learning models, creating engaging and effective lessons for her students. The integration of videos and digital tools further enhanced her teaching capabilities, demonstrating the power of modern educational methods in rural settings.
Currently, she teaches second graders concepts like “Tail Words” and “Two Vowels Together,” using self-created teaching charts. Her focus remains on building her students’ confidence and fostering a love for the English language.
Inspiring Peers and Overcoming Challenges
Sunita actively shares her success stories during Kendra meetings, motivating her fellow educators to adopt LFW techniques. She believes that contributing to an organization as selfless as Vibha brings immense satisfaction.
Sunita’s dedication to improving child education is also reflected in her participation in competitions like the Words Per Minute Challenge. Her goal is to bring her students to the Word Power Championship WPC Finale, further showcasing the power of innovative learning methods.
Transforming Child Education in Rural India
Sunita Pawar’s journey with Vibha and LeapForWord exemplifies the profound impact that dedicated teachers and innovative techniques can have on child development. From empowering educators to inspiring students, Vibha’s initiatives continue to create transformative change, cementing its position as the best NGO in India for underprivileged children.
Join Vibha in creating a brighter future for India’s children. Together, we can make quality education accessible to every child.

Fashion Seasons
Every year, there are four seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn/Fall, and Winter. Because the seasons intertwine effortlessly, the fashion industry produces two collections yearly.
The Spring/Summer collections come first from September to November, and then we get Fall/Winter collections from February to April.
This is a simple case of planning ahead so that the public knows what designers foresee on the streets for the relevant season. An excellent shopping tip is to buy winter clothes in the summer and vice-versa. You end up with massive savings because stocks must go.
New York Fashion Week (NYFW)
New York fashion week comes first. The biggest shows in New York are usually Brandon Maxwell, Carolina Herrera, Laquan Smith, Michael Kors and Tory Burch, to name a few.

Jasmine Tookes walks for LacQuan Smith and Gigi Hadid walks for Michael Kors.
London Fashion Week (LFW)
Next up is London fashion week. There are few shows in London, but huge brands tend to book international models quickly. Centre stage shows include Burberry, Erdem, Emilia Wickstead, Victoria Beckham and Vivienne Westwood.
Vivienne Westwood's granddaughter walks in her fashion show posthumously.
Milan Fashion Week (MFW)
Now comes Milan fashion week. By this time, we are well and truly into the madness, and models are tired. The shows that attract the most attention include D&G, Dsquared2, Etro, Fendi, Prada and Philipp Plein.
Dolce & Gabbana collection.
Paris Fashion Week (PFW)
Finally, we end with Paris fashion week. Everyone is tired by this point and ready to go home. But how can you when shows like Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Acne Studios, Miu Miu, Balenciaga, Hermes, Christian Dior, Saint Laurent, Valentino & Balmain are on?
A Christian Dior Tote Bag is seen in the 2020 collection.
Not to mention that a designer can move their show to a different destination. For example, in 2023, Versace showed their FW23 collection in Los Angeles instead of Milan.

The 40th-Anniversary London Fashion Week Is Looming – So What Can Attendees Expect?

If there is at least one development that ought to brighten spirits among many a style aficionado amid the January greyness and drizzle, it is surely the looming return of London Fashion Week (LFW) – not least as this won’t be “just another” Fall/Winter instalment of the iconic trade show.
We are, of course, referring to the fact that the upcoming LFW will mark the event’s 40th anniversary when it takes place in the UK capital from 16th to 20th February.
While LFW’s status as one of the world’s “Big Four” fashion weeks – alongside New York, Milan, and Paris – might not have altered over the years, certain other things have. One of those is the hybrid format the show now takes, with physical and digital presentations set to be held in celebration of both well-established designers and emerging fashion talents.
Then, there is the news that fur won’t feature, the British Fashion Council (BFC) – which organises the show – having banned it from the schedule as a requirement of its 2024 application process. But what else is set to distinguish LFW40 as the way to get the UK capital’s fashion year underway in ’24?
Once again, a formidable showcase of creative talent awaits
In its announcement just before Christmas of the provisional schedule for this milestone LFW, the organisers promised that the Fall/Winter 2024 edition of the legendary trade show would “spotlight London’s unique creative communities and its position as a world-leading cultural capital.”
Sure enough, the evidence so far is that this will be emphatically the case. The week is set to commence with maximum impact courtesy of Edward Crutchley’s captivating creations, with Sinéad O’Dwyer and Chet Lo subsequently putting on their own showcases.
That is before one accounts for the comeback of Dunhill in the form of its first live runway since 2020, helmed by creative director Simon Holloway.
As the week progresses, the capital’s ever-sharp fashionistas will inevitably be keeping their eyes out for the latest inventions of a stellar complement of both menswear and womenswear designers. Expect all manner of pioneering, bold, and… unexpected looks alike from such principal players as Burberry, 16Arlington, David Koma, Dilara Findikoglu, Emma Wickstead, Simone Rocha, Fashion East, ERDEM, Richard Quinn, Molly Goddard, and many more.
While Somerset House at 180 The Strand will serve as LFW40’s main venue, various shows will also take place in other locations around the capital. And of course, attendance of the shows will be by invitation only, with the mere mortals of the general public still restricted to looking from afar. Well, that’s sort-of correct; this season will also see the return of the LFW City Wide Celebration, a programme of more broadly accessible events and activations coinciding with LFW.
What should be your next steps in readiness for LFW40?
The latest details about this year’s showcases can, of course, be found at LFW’s usual online home.
In the meantime, if you are aiming high with your fashion, luxury, or lifestyle brand in 2024 and would appreciate the knowhow and assistance of a strategic digital agency in London with a consistent track record of excellence, you are very welcome to reach out to the Skywire London team.

Each piece—from the strong, monochromatic looks to the bold patterned pieces—feature tiny details that highlight the label's knack for fine tailoring and dreamy outlook. Slitted leather-like pants, a backless dress with a front to back cut-out detail, a single strap suede dress and more contribute to the playful edge.
