Rebels Rewatch: "A Princess On Lothal"
Mini Leia is here to lift everyone's spirits, and provide some much-needed hardware to the Rebellion.
Right, so going to have to be careful about the new photo limit, but just one quick cap from the beginning here because awwww the Loth-cat was comforting Ezra!
Oooh the deep glockenspiel adds some interesting texture to this music cue here.
And cue the Hammerhead corvettes. Good thing Leia dropped by when most of the blockade was still sweeping up on Garel.
(They'll be back soon, Lothal and Garel are practically galactic neighbors.)
Lol Lyste sighing in aggravation about "Another delegation from Alderaan." I'm certain Bail and Breha have cultivated quite the bleeding heart reputation as cover for their covert Rebel activities.
I don't think the voice actress they chose is that great. She sounds... way older than 15/16 and I can tell she's trying for the cadence of Carrie Fisher's snark but... I dunno it just lands weird for me. I think they could have gotten away with having her voice sound younger and it would have been okay.
Chopper sticking by Ezra's side. :((((
A slow, mournful version of Ezra's theme. Fitting, as he's going to be grieving the whole episode. Which is a nice bit of continuity. I love it when shows allow time for characters to grieve and adjust to losses they've sustained.
Subtle animation appreciation moment: The way Ezra idly thumps the cadet helmet to the side of his head. Just a nice little gesture that adds character and flavor.
Oh shit, that was definitely a Dies Irae in the score there.
(A refresher for those of you just joining this rewatch: The Dies Irae is an old Latin musical sequence that has been used basically since the Gregorian chant days to denote the specter of death in a work of music. Composers from ages past up to the present have referenced it in their compositions. Think of it as like the world's oldest music meme.)
Lot of OT score references in this part, no surprise.
Ezra is noticeably more surly and pissy than usual this episode, at least until his pep talk from Leia. Also no surprise, the boy hides behind his sarcasm and snark like no one's business.
"I don't get to give orders!" Just wait, Ezra, lol. You'll get your turn.
Leia playing Lyste like a damn fiddle lolol.
Mini Leia is really pretty. They did a great job with her design.
Alderaan sits pretty in the "plausible deniability" section. I'm sure the Empire suspected the planet of harboring secret Rebel sympathies but they were never able to have concrete proof of it. Bail, like Mon, probably held out hope that he could stem some of the Empire's tyranny from within, and so that's why he didn't want to lose his seat of government power, not as long as there was a chance he could effect some kind of change, which meant Alderaan had to avoid being directly tied to the Rebellion.
There's some commentary there about the need to work within the system in order to fix it, versus when it's time to break off and burn it down, but I'm not going to go into that right now.
Hngh, Ryder's resignation when the Stormtrooper mentions "termination".
"Hera's here." Hhhnkgjhn that's the happiest we've heard Ezra sound this episode Imma cry.
Luke's theme used per the standard as a bold Big Damn Heroes leitmotif with the Ghost's appearance.
"I'll warn Sabine." Lol how does Ezra know Sabine's the one who's going to be paying attention?
Zeb enjoyed this entirely too much lololol.
Ha ha those two Stormtroopers who are like, "They take prisoners now???"
This man has zero shame lol.
RIGHT, SO THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE UNDERRATED SABEZRA MOMENTS RIGHT HERE AND I HAVE BEEN A VERY GOOD GIRL WITH THE PHOTO LIMIT WHICH MEANS I GET TO CAP THE SCENE IN FULL.
That soft hand on his arm. The way her eyes linger on him as he turns away.
*sobs*
I love it so muuuuuuuuch!
Leia being, well, Leia, immediately discerns that something's really bugging Ezra. I love that the Kenobi show leaned into the inner sixth sense she displays here, that she can pick out a person's thoughts and feelings with the Force just by looking at them.
Kanan discerning that Leia might be able to comment and help Ezra, aww.
Friiiiiiiiick his face.
Leia's theme follows right on the heels of Ezra's theme here, in the score.
"I feel like because I can fight, I have to, for those who cannot." Boy is that isn't the quintessential Jedi and Rebel Alliance motivation right there...
I do like the dynamic between Ezra and Leia. It's very sweet. They bond based on their shared Hero Complex motivations, their mutual desire to fight on behalf of the helpless. Ezra shows off a little bit for her, later, in the way he usually does around girls he likes (the boy has A Type, let's be honest), but it never quite reaches the overtness of his crush on Sabine, so it hits even more quasi-platonic.
I think Leia thought he was cute tho.
Back to the plot, Leia's embarrassing Lyste all over the place here lol.
Ah, wow, the Rebel Alliance theme, haven't heard that in a while.
There is quite a bit of tension in how slowly the Hammerheads take off. The show plays that tension for all it's worth.
Oh you know I gotta comment about this part right here where Ezra goes feral.
For a moment we had all forgotten about the fact that he was clearly grieving, and this outburst caught us off guard. The way this is staged it's framed as concerning, with an edge of danger, Ezra leaping onto the Stormtrooper and clashing beats sounding along with his punches in the score, Kanan reaching towards him with an almost hesitant body posture.
But! Ezra lets out his anger and then contains himself, standing up and just putting his helmet back on. He breathes, regains his composure, and returns to neutral.
*weeps* He's such a good Jedi.
Kanan whipping out his lightsaber to be awesome against the AT-ATs aaaaaah!
(And that implied to be the reason Ryder stayed on Lothal and started up a new Rebel cell there, ONCE AGAIN CATCH ME CRYING ABOUT HOW THE JEDI REPRESENT HOPE TO A HOPELESS GALAXY.)
HHmmmmmmgggh I wanna say this is a recurring leitmotif but I don't know, I love it either way, it's beautiful.
Swish swish and return to first position, aaaah lightsaber choreography is so cool sometimes.
This whole sequence is just... *chef kiss*. The orchestration, the tension, the rapid shot choice...
Lolol Lyste getting thoroughly embarrassed by Leia.
Fun fact: One of the Hammerheads they gathered here in this episode would later go on to be the one that landed THE decisive blow to one of the Star Destroyers guarding the shield gate at Scarif.
PIECE BY PIECE, REBELS SHOWS THE MINUTIA OF SACRIFICES NEEDED TO PUT EVERY ELEMENT INTO PLACE FOR THEIR ULTIMATE VICTORY.
Ryder enters with Ezra, did Ezra have any kind of hand in convincing him to fight for Lothal?
HE LOOKS DIRECTLY AT EZRA I THINK THERE'S A CASE TO BE MADE HERE.
The Force Theme soaring into prominence here as we close out.
This episode is just the kind of break we need to process the events of the previous episode. Leia is almost flawless, willy deflecting suspicion off herself while playing the Imperials all for fools, compassionate and empathetic when she senses someone in pain and turmoil.
Ezra is allowed to grieve throughout the episode, and displays a myriad of conflicted and complex emotions from scene to scene. Kanan almost takes a bit of a backseat to comforting him, letting all the others express sympathy in turn, giving him the space he needs and offering up the distraction of the mission. He handles Ezra really well, all things considered.
It helps that Ezra, unlike Anakin, chooses to deal with and channel his grief in a productive way, rather than destructive. (I have the tag "#ezra is the anti-anakin" for a reason.)
This is a fun episode. Lighter than the previous one, lower stakes, but needed to let the characters breathe and process through the revelations of the plot. I really like it.
We're about to hit the Golden Streak, so stay tuned, I will have more to say later.

That is awesome!
its been a while! had to deal with college enrollment which is always stressful 💀 but anyway!
one of the best things that happened at the start of the year is i got commissioned by LEIA, the official tagalog voice actress of mirabel on the tagalog encanto soundtrack! it was such an honor and a great opportunity to have worked with her through this project and i honestly loved how the piece turned out as well!
im not sure if she has tumblr but i'd like to thank her for being patient with this piece and picking me as the artist she wanted to work with! here's the final piece; it contains the tagalized lyrics of "i am ready, come on im ready!" in waiting on a miracle / na'san ang milagro ko!
and!! please do continue to support the tagalog dub for the encanto soundtrack as well, its rare that we get an official disney soundtrack dubbing let alone an album which, of course, filipino encanto fans (myself included) went crazy for!

Anyone else absolutely WRECKED by the echo of Princess Leia’s theme at the end of Kenobi? When he says good bye to her? And they won’t see each other again until he dies for her? Just me?
And RIGHT FROM THERE we segway to Luke’s theme and Obi wan gives him the toy ship…
Say what you will about the show (I loved it) the soundtrack was FIRE.

Hi Hana!
Please tell me you know the song Deliver Us from Prince of Egypt (if you don't, you must go listen to it). That one line slaps so hard and it makes me think of Dawn Knight and Silver and Meleanor with Malleus
The line: ,,My son, I have nothing I can give but this chance that you may live."
Tell me I'm not the only one
Come here Althea, I just want to have a talk ☺️🌻🌸
I haven’t seen the movie in ages, but I remember the story. I listen to the soundtrack occasionally and…argh, the pain!!
Two brothers who loved each other but ultimately couldn’t see eye to eye, and we know that would never happen with Malleus and Silver. They love each other too much and understand the other’s pain for that.
But yes!! That song! That lyric!!
A mother having to give up her son so they can live. The parallel of both Meleanor and the Knight of Dawn.
Meleanor who stood as the final barrier so Lilia can escape with Malleus.
The Knight of Dawn fighting to buy some time for Leia and baby Silver.
And you could even say the lyrics apply to Lilia as well for both Malleus and Silver.
“I have nothing I can give but this chance you may live”
Lilia trying his best to hatch Malleus, giving his life and magic to him. Lilia raising Silver, a human, which is vastly different than raising a fae.
It’s not “nothing to give” but more “everything”
These parents gave their everything, gave their love, to their babies.
There’s also the similarities of the sons being raised by someone else like Silver and Malleus were.
You know what other lyric that fits so well??
“Sleep and remember my last lullaby”
The last lullaby!! Meleanor’s Lullaby!! The song that Lilia sang to Malleus and Silver!! The one that Malleus hummed to baby Silver and when he put everyone to sleep!!! Can you hear my heart shatter?? 💔😭
My favorite song in the move is “when you believe” I love listening to that song 🥹💞

Do you think they should have went with the Chosen One plot for Anakin when they made the prequels? I've been rewatching the original trilogy and there is no mention of any prophecy. It seemed more like Anakin was a very powerful Jedi, but nothing grander then that.
Then, all of sudden the prequels are saying that he is the literal messiah of the Galaxy, destined to bring balance to the Force.
I mean, this isn't the blog for that, anon.
It's really not the blog for it not just in the sense that we talk about how things are here not how we want them to be but also because I think the Original Trilogy are also incredibly bad movies. They're not winning awards for being any better than the rest of the gang or any more righteous, they just have nostalgia, a few great actors carrying the weight (but only a few and not even some of the most important ones), a fantastic soundtrack (that admittedly is strikingly similar in parts to Holst's The Planets), and some great special effects and editing as of the time that George has tried to strip away with every passing year. It's no skin off my nose if the Prequels took some liberties to make things better (and... the thing about The Prequels is that they're not better, of course, but the plot is a lot more compelling than 'the Death Star blew up once' followed by a short break then 'the Death Star blew up twice')
But as for your question, it didn't strike me as too odd we didn't hear of it, because that's the whole thing: Jedi culture is wiped out to two known survivors (that we see anyway). And per those Jedi survivors, Anakin was very clearly not the chosen one as he did anything but bring balance to the Force.
So, you have Obi-Wan who doesn't want to talk about fucking any of it and lies through his teeth multiple times to Luke because he just doesn't want to talk about any of it. Then you have Yoda who wants to talk about it even less.
Neither is bringing up "did you know there was this prophecy where your father was supposed to bring balance to the Force? Boy, did he sure not do that".
Vader certainly isn't bringing it up either as, well, look at his miserable life and how much he hates himself and the Jedi. He's not bringing up their stupid prophecy that clearly wasn't true.
Remember very little is known about the Jedi for the common people, especially after Palpatine's taken over and spread propaganda and such. Han doesn't even think the Jedi are real and if he does it's "that weird space religion cult thing that died out???"
That is to say the prophecy is not common knowledge and especially not for people like Luke, Han, or even Leia for that matter for all she's a little more Jedi adjacent.
Even within the Jedi we see that people don't take the prophecy seriously. That was a Qui-Gon thing. He was super into that prophecy, yo, and the other Jedi (Yoda, Mace, Obi-Wan even) all sort of stared at him looking very upset for insisting on this.
And in the war, while Anakin was an exceptionally talented Jedi, he wasn't really used as a propaganda piece/seen as the only Jedi who would save them all.
The prophecy was just the reason Qui-Gon insists on training him despite his age and is one of those things that seems to have actually been correct for all that no one will ever admit it.
(@therealvinelle can correct me if I'm wrong but I'm going to lay down something that will make people very upset: Anakin being "The Hero with No Fear", seen as one of two great Jedi in the war who are doing so much for the cause more than anyone else, and the extra focus on this prophecy was an invention of Disney's 2008 The Clone Wars, not the films.)

Shadows of the Empire was an ambitious multimedia project that, in both retrospect and at the time, helped to set the standard for what the classic Expanded Universe could accomplish. A movie-sized project "without the movie," it spanned a novel, comic series, video game, trading cards, soundtrack, and toy line that all tied together different parts of the same story. The novel followed the main plotline, which told our core heroes' story of trying to locate and save Han (frozen in carbonite) between Episodes 5 and 6. Luke, Leia, Lando, and Chewie were joined by new cast of fan-favorites such as Dash Rendar, against antagonists Prince Xizor, Guri, and the bounty hunters.

Kaji Fes.2023 Day 1 FULL Video [Reupload]
Find the original post from last night HERE. It doesn't show up on the Tumblr dashboard so only people who actively check my blog have seen it. I exchanged the video with an official one so I guess it might have been a copyright issue. Don't think I've ever had one, very interesting.

❗FOR PERSONAL USE ONLY❗ ❗CREDIT me if you SHARE on other sites❗
I was quite excited to watch this since I only attended Day 2 last December. I didn’t necessarily regret not going for Day 1 but there were a couple of really neat songs in the setlist that I kinda wished I had been able to see performed live. The audio seems a bit dull but maybe it’s just me… Anyway, it’s still a pretty epic live. Please note that they decided to cut a handful of songs from the broadcast (probably to keep the whole thing at roughly 2 hours). The following songs are not included: fake garden, canta per me, she has to overcome her fear, I beg you and 砂塵の彼方へ.
Here are some random thoughts┗(•ˇ_ˇ•)―→
fake garden
canta per me
the world: Nothing much to say here. Decent performance but I liked the song more when it was led by Keiko.
Liminality: Loved, loved, loved this version with the amazingly talented Yuri Kasahara, Keiko and Kaori. The bridge here might be my favourite of all time.
in the land of twilight, under the moon: Never been a fan.
swordland: Another highlight for me. I think it’s easy to tell that I am a real sucker for YK’s guest vocalists that use a more operatic singing style.
she has to overcome her fear
luminous sword: Always been a big fan of Yuki’s SAO soundtrack. I understand why it gets performed a lot.
星屑: Even though this is a Keiko-centric song, I’ve never really liked it all that much so I don’t have much to say about it.
花守の丘: Solid.
we’re gonna groove: Those who have followed me for a while know how I feel about the accordion. I dislike this instrument with a passion and it’s just featured way too heavily here. Fun fact, when Day 2 started with the accordion, I got really scared and wondered whether or not I would enjoy myself.
Obsession: Can’t say I’ve ever heard this song before. Sadly, it’s nothing that leaves a lasting impression. Also, that accordion…(¬_¬) Weird choice for LINO LEIA. It was fun hearing Keiko sing a bit of English though.
千夜一夜: Once again, not familiar with the song. Like this one a bit more though. Generally, I think I prefer rito’s vocals over LINO’s even though I don’t really know why.
Point Zero: This is one of my all-time favourite YK songs and one of the few tracks I really regret not seeing live on Day 1. Another epic performance by Yuri Kasahara. God, I love her so much.
salva nos: Speaking of regrets, yup, I’ll admit it, I am pretty bummed that I missed this one. “salva nos” and “a song of storm and fire” were the very first YK songs I ever listened to and they quite literally changed the trajectory of my life. Without those two songs, I wouldn’t have looked into more of YK’s stuff and I certainly wouldn’t have discovered Kalafina. One day, I wanna be there for a live performance. At least I got to hear “a song of storm and fire” on Day 2. So grateful for that!! Anyway, super epic.
花の唄: No thoughts.
I beg you
櫂: Ahh, I almost forgot about Aimer’s Mizu no Akashi 2.0. It’s so funny to me that this is literally copy/paste. Lovely melody, I don’t even mind the vocals all that much but damn, it’s not even coming close to Wakana’s Mizu no Akashi.
朝が来る: Decent but nothing to write home about.
My Story: Ohhh, another score track from “Hanako to Anne”. I was actually blown away by Day 2’s “希望の光”. This is not as good but still quite nice. Weirdly enough I am obsessed with the uilleann pipes. How come I can’t stand the accordion but I absolutely love this instrument? Probably because I am really into the celtic sound?
Parallel Hearts: Ugh, never liked this song, not even when Wakana was still around.
stone cold: This on the other hand is a song I’ve always enjoyed but with Wakana no longer in the picture, it’s just not the same. Will never get used to the Kaori chorus. Sorry T_T Still like this though.
the image theme of Xenosaga II: Good stuff.
蒼穹のファンファーレ: Love that this is focusing on the FJ regulars. My favourite performance of the song so far.

Do Yall ever think about how your oc would ideally have their own John Williams theme in a Star Wars movie and I know it’s a weird hypothetical because the soundtrack only exists to us viewers but. Imagine your oc having their own theme that mingles with another based on their interactions (this is me being a self shipper sorry) and the way the music would swell and crescendo and-
This is basically just me saying I remembered that Aster and Luke would have a beautiful, breathtaking, absolutely stunning John Williams score to accompany their love scenes that either combines their themes or makes something new like they did for Han and Leia and I think that’s awesome.
#I also thought about their first kiss and first time making love but that’s for another day#ugh could you just imagine#it would have so much power and emotion to it and I don’t think we really think about it all that much when writing fanfics#anyways#star wars#oc#fanfic writing#self insert#oc x Canon#rubix rambles

HOLD MY BEER....wait hold on a minute.. I feel stupid (STARWARS EDITION)
alright real quick starwars rant....
I have been watching the Acolyte while I work, so that means 2 things, one that I haven't been paying enough attention and two that I have definitely not been paying enough attention.
for those who have been following me for a while, you know why its been nuts for my little family and I lately.
Anyhow, I grew up with StarWars, I love starwars, Own many books, I have the movies even the original VHS before Jabba was edited from a human, I have decor, Just so much StarWars merch, even legos, to the point that my kids know the soundtracks by heart as well...
I absolutely HATED then new Movies... I dont like Rey... I hate the story... (actors are very talented) What they did to Luke, Leia and Han... come on.... Disney.. I hate what you did.
So I started watching Alcolyte while working and didn't research anything for it, I just watched it while I worked... I didn't realize that they were changing stuff... until I had a conversation with my older brother who is a true Fan of StarWars, I love him, and if I have any starwars questions or need any StarWars advise I go to him.
I am one of those starwars fans... and when My brother explained what the Acolyte is doing... we both went on a crazy karen panic attack!
Dude... HOW DARE YOU DISNEY... HOW DARE YOU DO THIS TO ANAKIN!!! HE IS THE CHOSEN ONE!!!! HOW DARE YOU!!!
AND DONT GET ME STARTED TO GET RID OF THE GOOD AND BAD! THAT IS JUST BAD STORY TELLING!!!!!
And then I thought well, at least the cast, loves starwars, the actors are fans, just like the Mandalorian, lets face it, if I had the chance to be part of it even in a crap story I would totally do it!
But then.... I saw this interview..... and I lost my wig....
HOW IN THE HECK?!
This actor who is a main character.... doesn't even know.... who is who in such a powerful franchise.
Sure StarWars is to a point just a movie.. right? NO
It shaped the ways we see movies now! The way storys are told!
So you cant just butcher it
and here is the kicker for me.... YOU ARE DISREPECTING... George Lucas... .... You are insulting his work, and his passion... That is sick...
anyhow... please if you love StarWars, let me know what you think...
Be honest... what do you think Disney is doing to StarWars...
Because right now, the SW fan in me is so angry... and I feel so stupid that I didn't do my nerdy and fan research as I should have.

Okay so has anyone done like a DinLuke Anastasia AU? Because honestly I was listening to the Anastasia Broadway soundtrack (again) instead of my usual DinLuke playlist and like all I can think is this au.
Like Padmé and Anakin are King and Queen of Naboo, with the royal twins Luke and Leia. Don’s parents are servants who moved to Naboo from Aq Ventina and got jobs in the palace. Din is like only a few years older than Luke in this as opposed to their cannon age gap. Because of this they often hang out (I doubt Padmé or Anakin would have issue with him being friends with the hired helps kid just given who they are) Luke is Din’s best friend, but Luke’s beat friend is forever and always his twin sister Leia, though Din is a close second. Both have a crush on each other, but neither voice it.
Then when Luke is eleven and Din is like fourteen, not quite a full on revolution but enough people are unhappy with things that a group of them Storm the palace and kill Anakin and Padmé. Leia escapes with Bail Organa and is adopted by him, but Luke isn’t as lucky. Din helps him into the servants quarters, but Luke drops the music box his mom had made when he and Leia were babies. Din goes back for it, but witnesses his parents being executed for refusing to give up the twins location causing him to black out and stay separated from Luke. Luke meanwhile escapes, but falls down a hill and hits his head losing his memories. The next day a kind old lady finds him and offers to help him find somewhere to stay.
“What’s your name child?”
“I think it’s Lu…. Lu… Luka?”
“Very well Luka, let’s find you somewhere warm for the night”
Fast forward ten years, things have gotten worse, Luke is struggling to find and keep a job, Din WAS a Mandalorian, but they aren’t very welcome around Naboo anymore after one of them was involved with the murder of the King and Queen and disappearance of the Prince. He has Grogu still, but he’s a human in this au because I say so. He’s mute and likely the Star Wars equivalent of a nonverbal autistic. Grogu doesn’t like the helmet much either, he doesn’t like not seeing his dad’s face, so the helmet (and the rest of the armor) goes.
Greef and Cara come up with the plan to fool Leia, who is offering a reward for anyone who can return her brother to her. (She knows he’s alive because she can sense him in the force) Din wants no part in it, but is struggling with money and affording to care for Grogu and the amount of money offered, even split between them, would be life changing. So he, reluctantly, goes along.
The group eventually meet Luke, hoping to get off world and find his family, and agree he looks just like the missing prince (no duh). Greef and Cara are elated that Luke has no memories and just wants to find his family meaning no extra split in the reward. Din on the other hand feels bad for taking advantage of someone who looks just like his best friend. Luke for his part, recognizes Din, but can’t figure out how he knows him, or how he knows his name.
The group begins making plans to leave Naboo. Din is left with Luke and Grogu. Luke asks Din if they could have met when they were kids because he feels like he’s met him before. Din confesses he was very close to the prince before he went missing and how he was his best friend. Luke asks if he believes he’s really the prince and Din admits he doesn’t know. He doesn’t want to believe his best friend would have forgotten him. Luke reminds him that he can’t remember anyone or anything from before he was eleven. (Cue in my dreams sequence) Luke accidentally floats some things making Din believe he might just be the prince. (Force users are rare and even rarer would be someone who looks so similar to Luke with force sensitivity)
After months of traveling via shuttles (no one has a ship) Din, feeling guilty eventually confesses everything to Luke, who he’s started falling in love with. Luke confronts Greef and Cara about using him to get a reward and trying to con someone who is just looking for her brother. Luke agrees to continue with them, but only to see if Leia is his sister and as he doesn’t trust Greef or Cara anymore he doesn’t want to see them afterwards. Din promises to help Luke find his family if Leia isn’t his sister and the two end up spending the night together.
Meanwhile Bail convinces Leia to give up the search, at least temporarily for her sake.
Stuff happens, Luke and Leia reunite, Luke gets his memory back, Din realizes Luka and Luke are the same person when talking with Luke results in him remembering the time Luke convinced his parents to let Din ride in the parade with them. Someone tries to kill Luke and Leia, Din stops them. Din and Luke get together, Luke adopts Grogu and the three decide to live a quiet life though Luke remains close to Leia.
I might have to write this actually.

Ahsoka Episode 7 “Dreams and Madness”: The Story, the Symbolism, and the Score
Here are my notes on episode 7 of Ahsoka.
Soft, ethereal music plays as the episode begins. The score rumbles ominously under the dialogue of the opening scene and fades out as we see that Hera Syndulla is being court-martialed for disobeying orders.
The notion that this particular Star Wars story is really a children’s fairy tale is reiterated in this scene, this time by Senator Xiono: “…this report reads like a child’s fairy tale. Jedi, false Jedi, Star maps, star whales, distant galaxies. Honestly, are we to believe any of it?”
The closed captioning indicates that emotional music is playing when a beloved character from the original Star Wars trilogy appears onscreen. John Williams’ Star Wars Main Title, a.k.a. the Skywalker theme, is heard when See-Threepio enters the courtroom. The tempo of this beloved familiar theme is slower, the notes are more elongated, and the dynamic level is softer than what we are accustomed to hearing when this heroic theme is typically used. Not only does this music indicate Threepio’s association with the Skywalker family, it also represents hope, just as it did when the world first heard it back in 1977 on the soundtrack to Star Wars: A New Hope.
The incidental music continues as Threepio presents a data transcript from Senator Leia Organa saying that she personally sanctioned General Syndulla’s mission to Seatos. In this scene we discover that Leia is the leader of the New Republic’s Defense Council.
Hera’s theme is heard after she thanks Threepio for delivering his important message.
When Mon Mothma and Hera talk after the case has been dismissed, Mon wants to know how real the threat of Thrawn’s return truly is.
“We have to prepare for the worst and hope for the best,” Hera replies as the score’s rumble of low strings segues into intense drumming. Brass instruments play a brief rendition of Ahsoka’s theme as the title card and episode title appear onscreen: “Dreams and Madness.”
Purrgil calls are heard as the massive creatures, along with Ahsoka and Huyang in the T-6 shuttle, travel through hyperspace. Inside the ship we see Ahsoka training with her lightsabers while an old Clone Wars era hologram of Anakin Skywalker plays.
Huyang tells her they are nearing their destination because the star whales’ velocity is slowing down. Ahsoka has returned to the cockpit of her ship when they exit hyperspace and fly straight into a minefield surrounding Peridea. Ahsoka’s Theme and other brass and percussion-heavy action music accompany the whales’ flight through the mines. Ahsoka’s ship is attacked by enemy fighters once they are clear of the minefield.
This is followed by a segue to a scene of the Chimaera docked at the Nightsister fortress. Enoch makes a report to Thrawn about the fighters’ pursuit, and Thrawn receives a report from Morgan Elsbeth about Ahsoka’s former Jedi master’s identity. Anakin Skywalker is a threat that Thrawn has encountered before. Thrawn was, at one time, one of the handful of people who knew that Anakin Skywalker later became the infamous Sith Lord, Darth Vader.
(This tale is told in Timothy Zahn’s novel Thrawn: Alliances.)
The Grand Admiral is determined to be one step ahead of Ahsoka because he expects her to be as unpredictable and dangerous as her former master.
Gentle music plays as Ahsoka flies into the star whale graveyard and Huyang scans for Sabine’s location.
Harp music accompanies a scene change. We see the Noti pods traveling to a different location on Peridea. Ezra is driving one of the larger pods, and a Noti goes inside of the pod, switching places with Sabine, who sits next to Ezra as he drives.
“I never really thought about how much I’ve missed,” Ezra says as Sabine and the Noti baby in the next pod wave at each other. Ezra and Sabine certainly have missed out on a lot of things, especially the time they could have spent together developing their relationship, perhaps a romantic relationship that could have led (and might still lead) to marriage and children. This is the second time Sabine has noticed the Noti baby. This could be foreshadowing that she might become a mother herself one day. Quiet, gentle music accompanies Sabine and Ezra’s conversation. Ezra wants to know how Sabine found him and she replies, “It’s complicated,” a description that also applies to their relationship.
When Ezra asks about Ahsoka, a mournful quotation of Ahsoka’s theme is played by a French horn softly under their dialogue, reminding the audience that Sabine believes Ahsoka is dead, but she doesn’t tell Ezra about this for fear of the questions he might ask.
We hear intense drumming when we see Baylan and Shin riding howlers along with the red-armored bandits. Low rumbles accompany the arrival of the Great Mothers at the henge. Morgan’s Theme (the Nightsister theme) is heard as the three speak in unison, activating their golden orbs, and creating a triangle of red energy to connect them.
When Ahsoka senses Sabine through the Force and calls out to her, the Nightsisters also sense their link. They discover and reveal the location of Ahsoka and Huyang.
When Baylan and Shin find Sabine and Ezra, Baylan tells Shin to contact Thrawn and kill Sabine and Ezra then take her place in the coming Empire. “Your ambition drives you in one direction. My path lies in another,” he says.
Although Baylan’s sinister theme is heard in this scene, when Baylan makes his cryptic remarks, ethereal choral music is heard. I believe that this music is foreshadowing a mystery that this series has yet to reveal. This is a quote from my notes on the previous episode: “Choral music suggesting the mysticism of the fallen Jedi Order is heard as Baylan speaks of Peridea being a realm of ‘dreams and madness’ from old ‘children’s stories come to life.’ Once again, the viewer is reminded that we are being told a fairy tale, a myth.” The big mystery must involve the Force in some way. Perhaps Baylan is seeking a power to help him rebuild, or maybe replace, the old Jedi Order. “Impatience for victory will guarantee defeat” might be a quote he needs to remember later on.
The red garbed alien bandits riding howlers remind me of J. R. R. Tolkien’s warg-riding orcs. The music for this scene is reminiscent of Howard Shore’s score for The Lord of the Rings films, momentarily making use of similar instrumentation, harmonies, and orchestral textures.
Thrawn’s stormtroopers are sent out in Imperial patrol gunships which appear to be a visual callback to the Rebels animated series.
Intense music plays throughout the chase scene and battle that follows it, as Sabine, Ezra, and the Noti defend themselves from the red bandits. As in old Hollywood Westerns, Ezra has the Noti “circle the wagons” (pods) to make a stand. Ahsoka’s ship is shot at by the fighters as she heads towards their location. Sabine and Ezra exit their pod as Shin arrives. Ahsoka makes a sliding leap from the ship as Huyang flies close to the planet’s surface.
We hear the sound of what the Kiners call “alien war horns” as Baylan and Ahsoka’s confrontation begins. This is accompanied by intense drumming.
Sabine offers Ezra his lightsaber and one of her blasters but he refuses, claiming that the Force is his ally.
Ahsoka and Baylan duel. Shin attacks Ezra and he deflects her lightsaber with the Force alone.
Baylan: “You can’t defeat me.”
Ahsoka: “Perhaps I don’t have to.”
Fighters chase the T-6 as Huyang evades their attack. Ahsoka abandons her duel with Baylan, riding away on his howler.
Thrawn wonders why Baylan isn’t at the battle site.
Ezra saves Sabine by using a Force pull to tug her away from Shin. They are surrounded by stormtroopers. Ezra comically tries to convince them to take them as prisoners.
Ahsoka arrives. Ezra and Sabine shoot and blow up several troopers while Shin and Ahsoka fight.
Back at the henge, Thrawn views the mission as a success but Morgan only sees their enemies reunited. The mysterious cargo transfer to the Chimaera is almost complete. We learn that the attack was to keep Thrawn’s enemies distracted. He believes time is on his side.
When the troopers battling the heroes are given orders to move out, Ahsoka tells Shin to surrender her weapon and even offers her help but Shin runs away.
Sabine’s theme is heard when she says “Ahsoka—I thought you were dead.” Ahsoka hugs Ezra. Ezra says he has a feeling that he might be going home after all. One lovely character moment that stood out in this scene was when Ezra comforted a Noti by holding hands with the little creature and speaking quietly to it, like a father soothing a frightened child. (I know I watch every episode with shipper goggles on, but was this more foreshadowing?)
The music here is a version of the end credits music, the variant of Ahsoka’s theme that is heard when all seven of the golden lines on the map reach Peridea. I think that the seven lines may represent Ahsoka, Sabine, Ezra, Huyang, Baylan, Shin, and Morgan. All of the main pieces have been assembled on the board, but who is the chess master? Is it Thrawn, or is it the three Nightmothers who were named after the Fates themselves?
