È PIÙ SACRO VEDERE CHE CREDERE - L'ATLANTE

Molti imparano a conoscere il mondo sognandolo da piccoli sugli atlanti: cercano soprattutto i punti vuoti, non ancora segnati da un nome, disponibili come campi dove applicare quella disposizione media all’avventura tipica dell’infanzia. Gli atlanti sono solo libri che copiano il libro del mondo (copie di copie, direbbe Platone), e proprio per questo moltiplicano nella contraffazione la nostra difficoltà di conoscere, la fanno precipitare a un certo punto in un pensiero abissale dove tutto, parola dopo parola, immagine dopo immagine, si sfalda in grani di pulviscolo che si fanno ingiustizia fra di loro, e infine raggiungono un punto vuoto, gonfio di splendore.

Ne “Lo splendore” c’è una scena. Hans, il protagonista del romanzo, riceve un atlante: chi glielo ha comprato ha appena saputo che è solo un libro, ma contiene tutto il mondo, e che i libri sono trappole per sognatori. Non è dato sapere nulla sulle mappe dell’atlante in cui rimane intrappolato Hans, ma dalla propensione del protagonista a ricercare ricovero spirituale nelle isole remote e irraggiungibili, è possibile congetturare che si trattasse di quelle create da Hondius Il Giovane.

Nell'immagine, “Nova totius Terrarum Orbis Geographica ac hydrographica tabula”, mappa del mondo creata da Hendrik Hondius il Giovane, nel 1630. Fu la prima mappa pubblicata in un atlante, e quindi ampiamente distribuita, a mostrare tutte le parti dell'Australia. Fu inserita e stampata in “Atlantis maioris appendix sive pars altera”, pubblicato da Sumptibus & typis aeneis Henricii Hondii, Amsterdam, 1631 (La foto, di pubblico dominio, è una scansione della copia appartenente alla State Library of New South Wales, tramite Wikimedia Commons).
