As someone who is also a historical costumer, the outfits Adrienne wears are something that I take great joy in creating, so much so that I was actually still making these all day today to make sure they were perfect! Everyone who’s read LBL knows I spend half my time describing the outfits she’s wearing when I have a specific one in mind, and that’s also because Adrienne is very conscious of the clothing she wears as a part of her identity. Adrienne has a very distinct, classic, but lavish style for the period. The popularity of coquette, pastoral, and florals hasn't quite arrived yet (it's popular in the 1780s), so I wanted to be sure that I clearly defined the period of these outfits, and I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

I read your little by little Fanfiction on a whim and I am obsessed it’s perfectly written and I really like the development. I think every scene with Draco and his parents is iconic. The growth, the love that is still there but yet… you did really well with the dynamic. It makes me wonder do they ever come atound like a little? I know in the Oneshot collection it’s better but still pretty cold.

But I also loved Marilyn and her friends. It seemed very realistic and I kinda think Draco and Marilyn were exactly what they needed at the time especially. Honestly great love story, it never got boring once which I don’t see often in Fanfictions that mostly focus on romance.

I also saw that you were really struggling at the time and I hope things have improved since! All the love from me ❤️

Thank you so much! Honestly that dynamic is something I thought a lot about, and sweated over constantly in terms of trying to get it right without anything feeling too black and white. Obviously, his parents are in the wrong, but it's not a simple matter when you dig into everything that goes into it, and from their very warped perspective, they are in the right, and they do still love their son, even if they're crap people.

I took a lot of inspiration from Gilmore girls as far as the dynamic goes, in terms of Emily and Richard's relationship with Lorelai when she pursues a life outside of what they deem to be acceptable - along with how they love their granddaughter despite her being born from their daughter's "poor choices", but that source is a little less complicated considering it's not rooted in what is essentially racism. Lucius and Narcissa have the snobbery aspect down pat, sure, but their ideals are a whole lot more of a problem.

Honestly, I don't think there'd ever be proper closeness. Maybe between Narcissa and Draco at most, and Narcissa and her grandchildren absolutely, but I think everything else would still be pretty strained - and it would, at absolute best, forever be the elephant in the room with her and Draco. I doubt he'd go to her for marital advice, and he'd be very careful about speaking of Marilyn in her presence, not because of her disapproval, but because he'd suspect Marilyn wouldn't like it, and he'd also fear it leading to his mother making comments that he'd then have to argue against and it could cause more rifts. I don't think Narcissa would like it, either, because she'd view it as a no-win scenario. She'd know what it would cost if she started sharing honest opinions, but she'd also find it insulting to have to hold those honest opinions back from her own son, so it's just best for all if there's a certain level of distance there on certain matters. But I think she'd be absolute grandmother of the year.

I also do think, eventually, there'd be a level of grudging respect between she and Marilyn, once she admits that she can see her strength, along with how happy she makes Draco. Maybe glimmers of warmth, but very fleeting and it would take honest to god life-of-death scenarios to make either of them speak of it. Otherwise, they can play nice and be cordial with each other, but I mean...Marilyn has just as much that she can't forgive as Narcissa does.

Ultimately, though, I think a lot of the stuff with Lucius is unsalvageable. I think he and Marilyn would only speak the bare minimum to each other under absolute necessity, and given that he and Draco were never particularly close to begin with - I think as a product of how Lucius was raised to believe a father should be, honestly - there's not the same foundation left to salvage that there was with Narcissa. I also think that he'd cling to his pride more, refusing to attend their wedding or do much of anything for the sake of "keeping the peace". In his mind, keeping the peace was not basically exhiling Draco from his and Narcissa's lives, and even that's an embarrassing concession.

In time, he'd see a lot of the same things that Narcissa does, especially where the grandkids are concerned, probably living in denial that whatever brilliance they show is because of their Malfoy blood doing the heavy lifting and fighting against the bad influence of their mother's genetics, but I think he'd be less willing to admit it or act upon it than Narcissa, and things would be far more strained between he and Draco. Whatever warmth he can bring himself to show is probably hand-waved away (even to himself, in his own mind) as for the sake of Narcissa, rather than much else. I think he's just as much of a product of his time and culture as Draco is early on in the canon, tbh, but for him it's too late and too deep-rooted to go back. I think if there's ever an honest, deep conversation and forgiveness on the matter, it's the product of a deathbed confession on Lucius' part. I think that's what it would take for some perspective.

Adrienne Fairfax

“Adrienne Fairfax, it has been far too long since I’ve seen you last. It worried me that you might be becoming a shrewd hermit all cooped up in Virginia,” Emily Rush admonished.

Adrienne scoffed at the notion, “Well, when all of Virginia’s respectable society has gone to reside with the Royal Navy in the harbors of Norfolk, one does not have many an opportunity to be seen. For, in order to be seen in a social setting, there must first be a society present.”

Emily raised her eyebrows, eyeing Adrienne, “Careful with your words, Addy. One might think that you support the crown when you talk like that, and, despite who currently occupies the city, you’ll find that people here don’t take kindly to such beliefs.”

Adrienne, smiling in response, responded, “Oh yes, I am well aware of the patriotism of the Pennsylvanian, Emily. But you cannot expect me to accept an invitation from the timid and plain Madison household. Nor the gaudy household of the Jeffersons,” she laughed lightly at the notion before continuing, “Especially the Jeffersons, it is highly suspected that the young Mr. Jefferson has lost many a battle to a fine bottle of wine. It would be unseemly, dear.”

hiii i just finished binge reading little by little and i am in LOVEEE!!!!! i absolutely love love love how you wrote marilyn and draco’s relationship 🥺 and do not get me started with marilyn and taylor and sarah!!!!!! IT MAKES ME SO SOFT!!!!!!! and how draco’s relationship with sarah and taylor improved!?!?!!!! kicking my feet and giggling :3 i absolutely looove how marilyn is characterized (i love how the golden trio was characterized too :3) but its so beautiful how you wrote the progressive relationships between everyone!! i love how marilyn was introduced into the magical world and i LOVE how you wrote narcissa!!!
