What are the steps to get an H-1B visa for an Indian?
Tumblr media
For many Indians, the H-1B visa is a vital route for highly qualified foreign workers, and it offers an exceptional chance to pursue professional and personal development in the United States. The H-1B visa is highly desirable since it provides access to a wide range of opportunities in U.S. employment for persons with specific talents and educational backgrounds.
To help Indian professionals navigate the complexities of the H-1B visa application procedure, this page attempts to function as a thorough guide. With this resource, potential candidates will be equipped with the information and resources they need to start their H-1B journey, from qualifying requirements to negotiating the sometimes intricate documentation procedures.
Eligibility Criteria For H-1B Visa For Indians.
Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree or higher from a U.S. or foreign university. The degree should be in a field related to the specific H-1B job. The H-1B visa is often associated with jobs requiring at least a bachelor’s degree or equivalent. The USCIS may consider equivalent work experience in some cases. The degree obtained from a foreign institution may need to be evaluated to determine its equivalency to a U.S. bachelor’s degree.
Independent credential evaluation services often do evaluations. The job that the applicant is being sponsored for must qualify as a “speciality occupation.” This generally means the position requires highly specialised knowledge and a bachelor’s degree or higher in a specific field. A speciality occupation requires the theoretical and practical application of highly specialised knowledge.
The position must meet one of the following criteria:
A bachelor’s degree or higher is the minimum entry requirement for the position.
The degree requirement is common for the position in the industry, or the job is so complex or unique that it can only be performed by someone with a degree.
The H-1B visa is typically tied to a specific job, and the applicant’s educational background and qualifications should be directly relevant to the position.
It is important to note that the H-1B visa process involves the employer filing a petition on behalf of the employee. Employers must submit various documents, including the Labor Condition Application (LCA) and evidence supporting the eligibility criteria.
Job Offer and Sponsorship H-1B visa for an Indians
Securing a job offer and sponsorship for an H-1B visa can be a multi-step process that involves finding H-1B sponsoring employers, job portals, networking, consulting with immigration attorneys, and effectively managing the job application and negotiation process. Here’s a breakdown of the steps:
Utilise job portals that cater to international candidates seeking work visas, such as Indeed, Glassdoor, and LinkedIn. Look for job postings that explicitly mention sponsorship or H-1B visa support.
Network within your industry by attending professional events, conferences, and seminars. Utilise online platforms like LinkedIn to connect with professionals in your field and express your interest in opportunities that offer visa sponsorship.
Seek advice from immigration attorneys who specialise in employment-based immigration. They can provide insights into companies known for sponsoring H-1B visas and guide you on the legal aspects of the process.
Some law firms may also have connections with employers looking to hire foreign workers, so exploring such possibilities is worthwhile.
Apply to job positions that match your skills and qualifications. Be transparent about your visa status and eligibility for H-1B sponsorship in your application.
Prepare thoroughly for interviews, showcasing your experience and demonstrating how your skills align with the job requirements.
Emphasise your unique skills and experiences that make you an asset to the company.
Once you receive a job offer, carefully review the terms and conditions, including salary, benefits, and relocation assistance.
Discuss this with the employer if H-1B sponsorship is not explicitly mentioned. Companies may be willing to sponsor if they understand the process and requirements.
If the employer is unfamiliar with the H-1B process, be prepared to provide information or connect them with resources to help clarify the steps involved.
H-1B Visa Lottery
The H-1B visa lottery is a process used when the number of H-1B visa petitions exceeds the annual numerical cap set by the U.S. government. The H-1B visa program has an annual cap on the number of new H-1B visas that can be issued.
Certain categories of H-1B petitions, such as those filed by universities and certain nonprofit organisations, are exempt from the cap. If the number of H-1B petitions received within the first few days of the filing period exceeds the available cap, a random lottery is conducted to select the petitions that will be processed for adjudication. There are two lotteries: one for the regular cap and another for the advanced degree exemption. The advanced degree lottery is conducted first, and unselected advanced degree petitions are then included in the regular cap lottery.
H-1B petitions are typically accepted starting from April 1st of each year for employment starting on October 1st of the same year. Preparing and submitting the H-1B petition on time is important, as the cap is often reached within the first few days of the filing period.
The lottery selects which petitions will be processed randomly if more petitions are received than the annual cap allows. Due to the high demand for H-1B visas, there is no guarantee of selection in the lottery. If your petition is not selected, it’s essential to have backup plans. This could include exploring other visa options, considering employment in a different country, or continuing education in the U.S. Some individuals may also consider adjusting their immigration strategy, such as obtaining Optional Practical Training (OPT) or seeking employment with cap-exempt employers.
The H-1B visa application process is a significant opportunity for skilled foreign professionals to work in the United States. While the process can be complex and competitive, understanding the key steps and requirements is crucial for a successful application.

“Carbon neutral” Bitcoin operation founded by coal plant operator wasn’t actually carbon neutral
Tumblr media
I'm at DEFCON! TODAY (Aug 9), I'm emceeing the EFF POKER TOURNAMENT (noon at the Horseshoe Poker Room), and appearing on the BRICKED AND ABANDONED panel (5PM, LVCC - L1 - HW1–11–01). TOMORROW (Aug 10), I'm giving a keynote called "DISENSHITTIFY OR DIE! How hackers can seize the means of computation and build a new, good internet that is hardened against our asshole bosses' insatiable horniness for enshittification" (noon, LVCC - L1 - HW1–11–01).
Tumblr media
Water is wet, and a Bitcoin thing turned out to be a scam. Why am I writing about a Bitcoin scam? Two reasons:
I. It's also a climate scam; and
II. The journalists who uncovered it have a unique business-model.
Here's the scam. Terawulf is a publicly traded company that purports to do "green" Bitcoin mining. Now, cryptocurrency mining is one of the most gratuitously climate-wrecking activities we have. Mining Bitcoin is an environmental crime on par with opening a brunch place that only serves Spotted Owl omelets.
Despite Terawulf's claim to be carbon-neutral, it is not. It plugs into the NY power grid and sucks up farcical quantities of energy produced from fossil fuel sources. The company doesn't buy even buy carbon credits (carbon credits are a scam, but buying carbon credits would at least make its crimes nonfraudulent):
https://pluralistic.net/2023/10/31/carbon-upsets/#big-tradeoff
Terawulf is a scam from top to bottom. Its NY state permit application promises not to pursue cryptocurrency mining, a thing it was actively trumpeting its plan to do even as it filed that application.
The company has its roots in the very dirtiest kinds of Bitcoin mining. Its top execs (including CEO Paul Prager) were involved with Beowulf Energy LLC, a company that convinced struggling coal plant operators to keep operating in order to fuel Bitcoin mining rigs. There's evidence that top execs at Terawulf, the "carbon neutral" Bitcoin mining op, are also running Beowulf, the coal Bitcoin mining op.
This is a very profitable scam. Prager owns a "small village" in Maryland, with more that 20 structures, including a private gas station for his Ferrari collection (he also has a five bedroom place on Fifth Ave). More than a third of Terawulf's earnings were funneled to Beowulf. Terawulf also leases its facilities from a company that Prager owns 99.9% of, and Terawulf has *showered * that company in its stock.
So here we are, a typical Bitcoin story: scammers lying like hell, wrecking the planet, and getting indecently rich. The guy's even spending his money like an asshole. So far, so normal.
But what's interesting about this story is where it came from: Hunterbrook Media, an investigative news outlet that's funded by a short seller – an investment firm that makes bets that companies' share prices are likely to decline. They stand to make a ton of money if the journalists they hire find fraud in the companies they investigate:
https://hntrbrk.com/terawulf/
It's an amazing source of class disunity among the investment class:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/04/08/money-talks/#bullshit-walks
As the icing on the cake, Prager and Terawulf are pivoting to AI training. Because of course they are.
Tumblr media

Can’t love in the dark (Part 2)
Tommy Shelby x reader
Sequel to “All I ask”
Request: kind of 🤭 @l1-l4 Andy threw a fantastic idea one day and I saw it, and from that moment I’ve been thinking about it daily… until this idea worked perfectly with another request for my Adele challenge ♥️ Andy, you asked for an angsty story, here you go! I hope you and everyone else like it 🥰 that gif was amazing and summed Tommy’s anger.
Summary: (There’s a time jump between this and the first part) Tommy keeps watching over Y/N, sending flowers, even after getting married to someone else. Until one day he exploded after finding the truth that caused a terrible accident.
“Can’t love in the dark” is one of my favorite Adele songs, the sentiment she sings with every time she performs it on stage gives me chills 🥹
⚠️ Angst but with a little surprise at the end 🤭
Word count: 4,727 (without the lyrics)
Tumblr media
Making the decision to let Tommy go was the hardest thing you ever had to do, but it was for the best, or at least you tried to convince yourself of that. Crying your heart out at night you tried to comfort yourself by thinking that his baby would be able to grow next to his father. Forcing yourself to push aside the feelings and expectations you started to develop towards Tommy and the future he had shared with you that’d be taking off right after the races.
He’d have another priorities from now on.
The following day you quit your part time job at the Shelby Company Ltd. and focused entirely on the shoes shop. Tommy tried absolutely everything in his power but all he got in response was a sad glance that broke his heart or you leaving him at the shop speaking to himself while you pretended to be busy in the back.
There was nothing to be angry or resentful towards him, he slept with Grace before meeting you after all… but deep down you wished it was you instead of her the one getting pregnant.
With a heavy heart you thought how you could only dream of what could’ve been.
You had been on the edge ever since, struggling to sleep, eating the bare minimum, you felt like a fragile thing that’d break at the slightest contact, trying to hide from your poor father the sadness that you carried around like a heavy weight on your shoulders.
Nothing seemed to be working out the way he had planned. Not after you made it very clear that the future he had envisioned of the two of you together wasn’t possible, he held the hopes still, thinking you’d accept the marriage proposal and he could be there for his son, but you quickly let him him know that was way too modern and looked extremely bad for you. He tried convincing you over and over, assuring that it would be just fine because it was you the one he wanted to get married to, not Grace.
There was nothing he could say would convince you otherwise.
But what really hit him was that one time when you on the edge of crying asked him to leave, you actually yelled at him frustrated because it was too damn painful to accept the fact that he didn’t belong to you, you accepted out loud that you were jealous of Grace for giving him something you wouldn’t.
As weeks went by, he got the news that Grace’s husband ended with his own life, he decided to not get involved in that matter but it was hard to stay away at the same time because she was pregnant with his baby. She was deeply affected by the way events turned out, constantly on the edge and his major concern was the wellbeing of his unborn child so he did everything he could to ensure it. One thing led to the other and he ended up getting married with Grace because it was the right thing to do.
So here he was, stuck in a marriage for the wrong reasons, thinking of another woman, dreaming of another woman that was slowly, little by little slipping away from him. It was impossible to focus on the fucking papers in front of him, work had been pilling up because he was always looking for a ridiculous excuse to see you, even from afar.
Polly stormed into her nephew’s office fuming after learning that he had blinders guarding Y/N when she took the train to the south to see a new vendor. Despite what happened, Polly still had a good relationship with her.
“It’s been over a year Thomas, you have to let her go, you got married to Grace, have a son now… Y/N needs to live her life, rebuild and start over.”
“What the fuck do you mean start over?” He squinted his eyes, blowing away the smoke of his cigarette.
“Oh! Please don’t play dumb with me, do you really expect her to remain single forever?”
The realization sinking in, it felt as if he got kicked in the gut. The long gulp of whiskey didn’t help.
“No… no, there can’t be another man in her life.”
“Are you even listening to what you say?! She deserves to be happy!”
“What do you know? Ey?!”
“There’s someone who’s interested in her but he can’t get close because of your bloody guards!” Polly exploded.
Jaw clenched at the thought of another man starting to court you. No, anything but that.
“I’ve to protect her.” Tommy leant on his desk with palms wide open. Head hanging low.
“You lost her and all for your stupid revenge towards the woman you’re married now!”
“I never thought she would get pregnant, trust me that wasn’t my intention.”
“But it’s too late now for that… just let the girl move on.” Turning on her heels she walked towards the door. “And be more discreet, the maids keep gossiping about how you are sleeping in the guest room.”
****
Hearing the bell, you called from the back of the room; “The store is closed now, I just forgot to change the sign” but you cut yourself after finding him at the other side of the counter.
“Y/N… please.”
Take your eyes off of me so I can leave
I'm far too ashamed to do it with you watching me
Defeated, you gave up, manners long forgotten. “How many times do I have to tell you that you’re not welcomed here anymore?”
Your attitude made him remember the first time he saw you and Tommy had to hide the smirk that was about to appear on his lips.
Please, stay where you are
Don't come any closer
“Just leave, Thomas, for good.” You pointed at the door. “Goodness, sometimes I wish you could keep your fucking promise and burn this fucking place down so I would’ve a reason to go away.” You admitted with anger, pacing the small shop.
Don't try to change my mind
I'm being cruel to be kind
“I could never do that to you.”
“That look doesn’t charm me anymore, your shoes are new, I bet all bloody Birmingham has new shoes so you really don’t have anything else to do here.”
“I want to help you.”
“Don’t.” You stated bluntly. “I don’t want your help or anything for the matter.”
“When I look around and see all I got, I should be pleased by the way things turned out. But I can’t… because I’m not sharing it with you.”
He was sincere and genuine, you knew that.
“Those were your dreams, not mine.” You added one more -an unnecessary- coat of product to clean the shoes, just to distract you from his gaze.
“Polly mentioned you need to move on. But I can’t let you go.” He was selfish without question, but those strong feelings for you didn’t go away even after marrying Grace.
“So I assume you’ll just go and use that razor blade in any potential man I lay my eyes on.”
“That’s not a bad idea, I’ll consider it thanks.” He added with a smile, loving the irritation in your eyes.
“What do you want Thomas?”
“You.”
It was one word but it included everything he really wanted.
“And what do you suggest then? You want me to be your mistress? That’s not going to happen.”
“Y/N…”
Emotions got the best of her, her eyes filled with tears. “I can’t love you in the dark.”
“Do you nee-”
I can't love you in the dark
It feels like we're oceans apart
There is so much space between us
Baby, we're already defeated
Shaking your head you gave him a warning look. “If you don’t leave right now, I’m going to start throwing shoes at your head for real.”
That was an image he would’ve loved to see, and deep down he knew you would do it without a doubt. So he decided to save himself the embarrassment and headed to the door, but before he even got to open the door, he turned to give you one more look.
Everything changed me
“Please just don’t kiss him the same way you kissed me… cause if you do, you’ll remember me.”
Your fist closed around the shoe you had been holding, way to expensive to throw it away, so instead you threw the brush you had been using. Letting out a groan in frustration.
Time didn’t make it any easier to forget him, all the opposite the feelings for him seemed to be stronger than ever, you wouldn’t stand between him and his son. You returned every single present and basket with fruits and flowers he sent over the last months right after reading every note he added to whatever the present was. His words were tattooed in your heart.
You have given me something that I can't live without
You mustn't underestimate that when you are in doubt
If only he didn’t see Grace back then, you’d be enjoying life together.
****
“You wanted to see me Tommy?” Scudboat poked his head from the door.
“Come in, close the door.” As he saw the blinder step in, he took a long swing of his whiskey, the liquid burning. “I need you to ask your wife to go to Y/N’s shoes shop.”
“Again?” Asked in shock Scudboat, he just went last week, but as Tommy gave him a dead stare, he hid his hands in his pockets.
“Yes, again, but ask her to go on Monday after eleven o’clock that’s after Y/N left for the market, and it will take her a while to go back to the shop and you’ll give her mother this money.” Tommy planned. He knew you’d go then to prepare lunch for your father and eat with him, then you’d take over the shoe shop while your mother returned home.
Tommy knew every single step you took, at what time you got the newspaper and each vendor you’d visit. Yet, you were so far away from him.
It was unfair for you, he knew that. He’d never ask you to be his mistress or anything, he just wished to find a fucking way to get you back. It was hard also for him to admit there was a time when he thought that maybe, just maybe over time he’d learn to love Grace like he used to years ago, but deep down he knew he’d never fully forgive her for betraying him. Let alone having a son together would make their marriage work.
But I don't want to carry on like everything is fine
The longer we ignore it, all the more that we will fight
“What happened Johnny?” Tommy cleared his throat getting anxious by the minute.
“Ehh you won’t like I-” Johnny muttered but he cut himself off when Grace stepped into the office.
“Tommy…” she looked over at Johnny several times, like trying to give him a hint to leave them. “It’s getting late.”
He found it extremely annoying to get interrupted, leaning back in his chair he flicked his cigarette. “I know.”
“Are you coming to say goodnight to Charlie?” She tried batting her eyelashes at him, the sweetest smile on her lips.
“Later, I’m working.”
“Bu-”One annoyed look and a loud sigh and Grace brought a hand to the end of her hair to disguise her disappointment. “Alright.”
Rolling his shoulders, Tommy looked at Johnny again. “So?”
“Tom I don’t like this, why can’t you just leave the poor girl alone? You’ve a family now, a boy.”
But Tommy kept shaking his head. “I’m paying you to watch her and report her moves to me, not asking if you like it or not.”
Polly knew him, his uncle Charlie was able to read him like the palm of his hand, but Johnny couldn’t understand the motives to keep tracking Y/N down.
“You broke up a year ago, got married… there’s no reason to-”
“Johnny, I’m not going to ask you again.” He dragged the words, if it wasn’t for the desk between them, he would’ve Johnny Dogs by the collar of his shirt now.
“Y/N is dating someone.” Johnny murmured, keeping his head down.
A heavy silence filled the Arrow House office.
Please, don't fall apart
I can't face your breaking heart
Tommy got up from his chair and walked quietly towards the window finding darkness only.
“Who is he?” He asked with more control than he expected.
Johnny made a face. “Don’t do this to yourself Tommy, let her move on.”
The man with icy eyes gave him a side look, it was enough to make him talk.
“He’s a Doctor, respectable, good background, treats her right, sends flowers every four or five days, walks with her to the park on Wednesdays and Fridays, on Saturday he goes in for dinner but leaves right after that. On Sundays she brings him food to the hospital and...”
“Apple pie?” Tommy completed while Johnny nodded.
Tommy knew the fucking recipe from start to finish, he could almost smell it and his mouth watered by the simple memory of how it tasted.
Did she give the doctor a small piece with her fork like she used to do with him?
Did she kiss the corner of his mouth after having a bite to remove the remains of sugar?
“That’s all Johnny, thank you.” He swallowed hard, memories making his chest ache.
Johnny wondered if he should also tell Tommy another thing he found out while following them.
Stopping right in front of the heavy door, Johnny twisted the peaky cap between his hands.
“He bought a ring two days ago Tommy.”
“Johnny,” His emotionless voice stopped him, “don’t follow her, you can go back to the gypsy camp.”
Once alone, Tommy pinched the bridge of his nose, defeated he took the glass of whiskey upstairs.
Looking at his son sleeping in his crib he couldn’t help but wonder why he made the mistake of fucking Grace that one time, he swore he could contain himself and he’d only use her to drive Campbell mad. But no, he was weak and the only time they were together she got pregnant. This wasn’t supposed to be how he envisioned his life, he wanted to date you, then propose to you, get married and start a family… you had been there for him to pick up the broken pieces from the ground that Grace left. Somehow you managed to make him softer, showed him he could trust and love again.
It wasn’t a surprise when you took a step back, didn’t accept his apologies, didn’t want to hear his explanations, packing your belongings from his office the very same night of the races, and closed the doors to your heart.
He begged, was willing to get on his knees to ask for forgiveness but you wouldn’t listen. His first mistake was to sleep with Grace that night, the second, marry her because she was with a child.
Was he being selfish? How could he let you go when you got so deep inside his heart?
You were slipping away from him, little by little, if you officially started a relationship with someone else, that man won’t waste time after realizing how fucking awesome you were, and if that happened, there was nothing left he could do to get you back.
I can't love you in the dark
It feels like we're oceans apart
There is so much space between us
“Why don’t you come to bed, Tommy?” Grace circled his desk and slipped her arms around his neck from behind. “It’s late.”
“In a minute.” He replied pretending to look at the papers scattered over the oak desk.
“I think you sho-”
“I said in a fucking minute!” He lost it.
Grace made a little jump when he raised his voice. “I heard what you said, I’m just trying to be a good wife.”
“Don’t try, Grace… just don’t try.” He added sharply.
“I’m doing everything I’m supposed to be doing Tommy, I take care of our house, look over Charlie, I make sure you’ve everything you need and yet I’m always alone here and when my husband is finally home by the end of the day I want him to take care of me.”
Tommy saw Grace toying with her wedding band.
“I’ve a load shit to do, alright?”
“Is that true or are you sleeping with some whore around?”
Her accusation made him snap his head at her. “What did you just said?”
“You haven’t even touch me in weeks…”
He wanted to sarcastically laugh at her question. You wouldn’t let him set a foot in your shop, let alone sleep in your bed.
“The way I see it, if you’re not with me that means you’re fucking someone else. Just tell me what you want and I’ll do it.”
He didn’t have the balls to say that the last time they slept together, he fantasized it was you instead of her, your name almost slipped out of his lips. But it would’ve drive Grace mad.
“I’m trying to go legal, Grace. That’s all… just go to sleep.”
“Tomm-” She started again but he cut her off.
“Don’t make me repeat myself again.”
Before she left, Tommy could swear he heard a sob but he was busy emptying the whiskey in his glass as he stared into the fire absently. Throwing his head back atop of the couch he wondered if you were by yourself that night.
The following day Grace insisted on joining him to visit his beloved horse, who was being trained at another facility. She started telling Charlie he’d see horses and the kid got too excited to advice her against the idea.
“… as I walked into the jewelry, I saw these lovely earrings that match perfectly…” Grace chatted non stop as they were on their way to the stables. He was looking forward a quiet day, but Grace had other ideas.
He just wished she could sleep just like Charlie was doing in her arms.
“Are you listening?”
Tommy dragged his eyes from the road to look at Grace for an instant, snapping out of his own thoughts.
“Yeah.”
“So what do you think?”
Shuddering, he took a long puff from his cigarette, feeling the smoke burn in his throat.
“I knew it, Tommy… you’re not paying attention.”
“Can you please stop this?!”
“Don’t raise your voice, you’ll wake up Charlie.” She tried but it was too late, the kid was already fussing. “See what you did?”
“You started this.” He pointed angrily.
“Shh, shh Charlie don’t cry.” Grace tried to get his boy settled, luckily he found a couple of horses out there.
“Look over there Charlie.” Tommy pointed. “There’s a horse.”
“Joshiee.” Charlie repeated, clapping.
Stopping the car, Tommy took Charlie in his arms, leaving Grace behind him. The gentleman in him wouldn’t be proud. But each passing day it was harder to pretend that he cared.
Placing his son on the ground, Tommy offered his hand to guide him.
“Come ‘ere.” Pointing at the fishes in the water trough, Tommy looked at the kid smiling with his chubby hand extended. “Goldfish keep the water clean.” He explained as if Charlie could understand. Grace joined them minutes later.
“I’ve been thinking… we should go away, for a family holiday.” Grace proposed brushing away a lock from her face.
Tommy shook his head instantly.
“Can’t do that, I’ve lots of work to do.”
“For a few days.” She tried again.
“No, you can go with Charlie though.”
Grace unamused expression didn’t have any effect on him. He was used by now.
*****
Tommy felt a rush of adrenaline through his body as he pushed past the people gathered on the street. The flames consuming the small shop, people trying to use buckets to attempt to extinguish the fire.
“Y/N!” Was all he could think of as he was desperately looking around for you.
We're not the only ones, I don't regret a thing
Every word I've said, you know I'll always mean
Everything was chaos.
Someone shoved him from behind, but since he let his guard down, he never noticed. An angry voice called for him and he recognized it right away.
“You must be happy now, finally kept your promise of burning my place down… MY MOTHER WAS INSIDE! You bastard! Get outta here!” Your fist landed on his chest as he was trying to process everything.
Tommy felt a rush of relief wash over him as he saw you were alive, but then he got in defensive mode.
“You destroyed years of hard work! My grand parents opened this store, my father started here cleaning shoes until he got a promotion and met my mother.” You spat with tears in your eyes, not caring about the venom and anger in your voice, or the people staring. “I HATE YOU THOMAS SHELBY, and I hope you pay for this.”
“I didn’t do this.” He let out a heavy sigh, shocked by your accusation.
His heart was shattered to know you thought he could do something like this. His stomach turned into a tight knot as he found the disappointment in your eyes.
“As if I didn’t know you, leave for good and don’t you ever come back.” You spat with anger oozing from every pore.
It is the world to me that you are in my life
But I want to live and not just survive
Walking backwards, he stumbled with someone who was trying to help. On his way to his vehicle he saw your mother sitting next to another woman on bench, at least she wasn’t injured.
“Find whoever did this.” Tommy instructed one of the blinders before leaving the place, he still couldn’t believe this was happening, but he had an engagement to attend and besides there was nothing he could do if you didn’t want him there.
Rushing into Arrow House he needed to hurry up to be on time, luckily Frances had his outfit prepared. The phone had been ringing in his office, but he really needed to get out of the house as soon as possible, after adjusting the last touches to his tuxedo, he moved to walk around the car, finding Grace already waiting for him. She welcomed him with a smile and a kiss that took him by surprise, there was something in her eyes different, it seemed like she didn’t had been bothering him about another woman in his life.
“Everything will get better for us after tonight Tommy, I just know.” She checked her reflection.
He doubted it was a possibility, but decided to have a peaceful night for once, specially at an event like this. He needed to raise funds.
“Where have you been? You were almost late.” She asked casually disturbing the peace he was looking for.
“Had some trouble at the shop. Finn messed up.” He lied.
“Hmm that’s weird, I looked for you there and couldn’t find you.”
“Went to the Garrison afterwards, that’s the reason I was late.” The lies slipped from his lips so easily.
She wanted to add something else, but Polly intercepted him by the door. “Scudboat has been looking for you, he looked deadly worried but wouldn’t tell me what’s going on.”
“Polly not now, please.” Turning around his head, he found the city Council leader with Grace.
And as they engaged in conversation, Tommy’s gaze was fixed by the entrance, as Father John Hughes and that insufferable MP entered. He couldn’t even stand to watch them, they weren’t welcome so he better hurry up to finish whatever the hell they’re wanted.
“Brother you need to know something.” Arthur whispered into his ear pushing him towards the staircase for some privacy.
With a heavy sigh, Tommy shook his head. “Not now Arthur, I can’t deal with anything else right now.” He spotted his wife talking to that mad Duchess.
“It was Grace.” Arthur admitted.
Confused, Tommy gave him a long look.
“Grace started the fire at the shoes shop, she saw a woman inside and thought it was Y/N. Someone recognized her.”
His head was spinning, anger building up and reaching unknown limits. Everything was so confusing, the bile rising up in his throat. Y/N could’ve been dead by now.
Storming like a bull he pushed past the people to find his wife.
“Come with me.” He grabbed Grace by the arm roughly making her gasp.
“Tommy I was talking to-”
“Why are you so worked up Mr. Shelby?” Tatiana smirked. His head was pounding. “I was telling your wife about the sapphire she’s wearing.”
“Tatiana said it’s Russian.” Grace interjected eager to participate.
And somehow the conversation escalated quickly, Tatiana kept pushing Grace’s buttons but at the moment he needed to keep the Duchess at bay. He’d deal with his wife’s jealousy later.
Scanning the room, he found Ada, fucking finally! Now he needed to deal with a spoiled princess he thought unamused. As his sister charmed Grace about a fucking donation, he tried to convince Tatiana it was a bad idea to go to the factory, but she was stubborn and had certain urgency to fuck him. There was nothing more discouraging than a woman selling herself off.
He was done. Fucking done of everything; the economic league, the duchess, his wife’s lies. This woman was absolutely mad
But time stopped as the duchess told him the sapphire had been cursed by a Gypsy. His ears were ringing, a shiver ran down his spine. Tommy had lost his faith back in France, but if there was one thing he believe in was spirits and Gypsy curses.
Speechless, he reached his wife in a few long strides.
“We need to talk.” Waving his hands anxiously he pointed at Grace’s necklace. “Take it off.”
“No, why?” Grace hissed visibly pissed off. “Tommy you gave it to me. Why are you doing this? You want to give it to someone else?”
“Here we fucking go.” He scoffed bothered. “I don’t fucking care, you want me to say this in front of them? Fine, I’ll tell you what I just learned.”
Anger was boiling inside of him, he simply didn’t care anymore.
He couldn’t explain the real reasons behind his request. “You told me you stopped by the office earlier huh?” He glanced someone passing towards the grand salon for diner. “But you forgot to mention that afterwards you stopped by at a shoes shop, the last place where a woman like you would be, Grace.” Looking up at the ceiling he blew the air he had been holding. “You started a fire at that shoes shop and don’t even try to lie, because people saw you.”
Grace’s features contorted. “Yes, I did it… because you’re distant with me, I know you wanted to marry that shoe saleswoman.”
Tommy saw red. “Yeah, I was going to marry her and when she heard you were pregnant she took a step back, walked away from me. That’s the biggest and selfless act of love.”
That's why I can't love you in the dark
“And where would you be today if it wasn’t for me?” She asked with her jaw clenched.
“Right here with her giving a beautiful speech about kindness.”
“I’m glad she’s dead by now.” She attempted to walk away, but Tommy took her by the shoulders.
“You should be thankful sh-”
“I don’t care about anything related to her.” Grace replied.
“Well, you should.”
“And why would I care about her?”
“BECAUSE I CARE ABOUT HER!” He lost control, Polly turned her head around at the shouting. “MORNING, NOON, AND NIGHT… I CARE ABOUT HER.”
Grace walked backwards, looking down.
“You’re lucky she wasn’t at the shop, she’s alive and I’m going to find her after the gala is over.” Tommy admitted triumphantly.
A man stormed in his direction out of the blue.
“For Angel!” He shouted right before firing his weapon.
The gunshot echoed in every corner of the room.
In the middle of the chaos, Tommy noticed Grace’s body leaned against him harshly, there was blood everywhere and people screaming. Tommy fell to the floor by the impact and Grace’s weightless body.
He called for help, and ambulance, anyone but Grace was already gone…
Someone took her lifeless body away from him and he wasn’t able to react, he remained frozen on spot in a corner. Replaying the images over and over.
Y/N swallowed hard after debating the entire afternoon whether if you were doing the right thing or not, yet here you stood if front of the venue where the Shelby family was leading a gala to raise funds to help people in need. One of the many dreams Tommy had shared with you.
Once the fire was controlled and people started to leave, one of the blinders who helped your mother to come out of it unharmed to let you know it had been Tommy’s wife the one who caused it, not him.
And guilt had been eating you alive ever since.
You needed to apologize for all the terrible things you said to him. You didn’t hate him, said it out of anger.
“Y/N! Oh, there’s been a tragedy… Grace is dead.”
****
A/N: Thank you so much for reading! I’m so happy the first part was so well accepted, hoping this following part will like you too… did you see that coming? If you have a few minutes, I’d LOVE to hear what you think!

Tails of Iron
This is a game that draws from a lot of sources.  It would take too long to go through all of them, but the biggest two:
Redwall:  You play a Rat Prince of Red Fort, trying to rebuild your kingdom after it was ravaged by evil, cannibalistic frogs.  The setting is a beautiful rendition of a dingy medieval setting.  It is full of small details that really sell it.  Background characters are constantly busy reacting to whatever is happening.  Anything that is destroyed will be slowly repaired as the game progresses.  If there is music playing, there will be a rat playing it in the background.  Outside of this the game is filled with background noise that never lets the game feel flat.  It always feels alive and fluid.
Dark Souls:  Dark Souls uses a purposefully clunky control system to create it’s tough, but fair gameplay.  Many games have failed to make a game system where every attack feels special and important.  Tails of Iron mostly replicates this.  It’s a side-scrolling platformer, but the attacks all must be planned with due care.  Your claim to fame isn’t size, like your brother, but appears to be combat instincts.  You can sense which attack can only be avoided certain ways.  Red Flash for attack that need to be dodged, gold flash for attacks that must be parried, white flash for ranged attacks that must be blocked, and red waves for attack that you have to roll out of, (two dodges).  Any attack without a flash can be countered as you choose.  Tails of Iron also gives you a burden and gives your equipment weight, meaning you have to decide how slow you want to be from your weapons and armour.
The game gives you two armour pieces, head and body, along with 4 weapons.
One Hand, Two Hand, Ranged, and Shield.  R1 is your one hand attack, which you will pair with your shield.  R2 has your two-hand attack.  /\ has your ranged attack.  L2 is block.
And L1 is drink bug juice.  This basically replaces your Estus Flask.  You can refill it at kegs in civilization, or extract the bug juice straight from any bugs you kill.  It’s a continuous heal while you hold the button down.  The health is balanced to force you to drink in boss fights about the same level you would in Dark Souls.  I’m really not sure why they mapped Drink Bug Juice to the same buttons they were using for your attacks.
(left), (right), and (-up-) have you equip your one-hand, (left), two-hand (right), and put your weapons away (-up-).  Down has you apply poison, once you unlock it.
The squeaking rats are annoying.  All they would really have to do is move the narrator, (which translates the squeaks), over the squeaks, rather than waiting until afterwards.
All in all, a really well made game.

Gurugram has a king of good times. Lakeforest Wines is both liquor monopoly & a renaissance
‘It used to be the monopoly of Ponty Chadha,’ Neeraj Sachdeva, Lakeforest founder, said. After running a wine business in California, Sachdeva now rules Gurugram.
Tumblr media

Gurugram: Neeraj Sachdeva’s world of affluence is divided into two hemispheres. On weekends, he tees off at Gurugram’s exclusive DLF Golf Club, often sharing the greens with the likes of cricket legends Kapil Dev and Yuvraj Singh. But come Monday, he’s back at his Sector 18 office, steering the growth of his liquor empire, Lakeforest Wines, now virtually a household name across Delhi-NCR.
But 55-year-old Sachdeva is no ordinary booze baron—he’s the first mover behind Gurugram’s transformation into Delhi-NCR’s liquor mecca. Selling everything from Red Label to Chilean reds to Japan’s Suntory Whisky Toki, shiny, mall-like chain outlets have become a symbol of the city’s pride and identity. In Haryana, a state where alcohol was banned between 1996 and 1998 and the market was long confined to dingy shops, Sachdeva returned from the US in 2004 with a vision to reshape how alcohol was sold, seen, and savoured in Gurugram—and pulled it off. Today, he’s not just a local player; he’s one of India’s biggest importers of wine – the quintessential drink of the wealthy.
“I always had confidence in myself that I would make it very big. I always wanted to make a lot of money,” Sachdeva said, seated in his plush office, surrounded by shelves of top-selling wine bottles.
A certified sommelier, Sachdeva ran a successful wine business in California before he decided to return to India 18 years ago, when the liquor market was dominated by barons like Ponty Chadha and Vijay Mallya. At first, Sachdeva had plans to manage the import section of Chadha’s operations, but the deal fell through. That’s when he opened his own upscale liquor store in Gurugram in 2007, located in the buzzing Sahara Mall and with celebrities like Ajay Devgn and Shilpa Shetty adding glamour to the inauguration.
Tumblr media
Back then, convincing Sahara Mall’s management to allow a liquor store wasn’t easy, and he ended up with a shop tucked away at the back. But nearly two decades later, Gurugram’s liquor market has exploded, and there’s even a local saying: “There are fewer people and more liquor stores in Gurugram.”
With Haryana’s relatively liberal excise policy, a per capita income that’s topped the national average by about 70 per cent for years, and Gurugram’s cosmopolitan corporate culture, competitors like Discovery Wines and, later, G-Town are also vying for the high-end space now.
Sachdeva, however, had already carved out his advantage by securing the only Imported Foreign Liquor (IFL) licence in the region until 2018, establishing an early monopoly in the sector.
Tumblr media
“From 2008 till 2017-2018, Neeraj Sachdeva was the king of imported liquor,” said a senior excise official in Gurugram on condition of anonymity. This dominance was largely due to Sachdeva’s control over the exclusive bottle in licence (BIO) and the L1 BF licence, which allowed him to import and distribute alcohol across Haryana. The official also noted that no one else could afford the steep import license fee until prices dropped from a high of Rs 50 crore in 2018. As a result, Haryana now has 16 L1B license holders.
Even though we now have an L1-BF licence, we still source certain wines from Neeraj because we don’t have the same access to international wine markets. He was ahead of his time and had branded himself in a way that made him stand out
-Abhimanyu Singla, owner of Discovery Wines
“While domestic players like Singlas, Mahalaxmi, and ADS stayed local, Sachdeva supplied top hotels like the Taj, Crowne Plaza, and Oberoi and through this he established relationships with big hoteliers, bars, and HNIs (high net worth individuals), building a strong distribution network,” added the official.
Sachdeva’s taste for luxury is reflected in his wine brand, Niccolo Sanitino, which he claims is the Italian version of his name. His influence reaches far and wide —politicians, cricketers, and Bollywood stars alike buy from him because they “trust the quality” of his liquor, he said.
“I can easily say that right now I am the number one private liquor importer in India. I am the only one with a backward integration channel. I even supply liquor to my competitors, Discovery Wines and G-Town, and big bars and restaurants in Sector 29 of Gurugram,” Sachdeva added. “For me, buying liquor should be akin to a shopping experience, and I have ensured Gurgaon has that. I want the world to learn the Gurugram way.”
Global ambitions
When Neeraj Sachdeva was growing up in Delhi, he had his fair share of brushes with future celebrities—playing cricket with Shah Rukh Khan, his senior at St Columba’s school, partying with fellow Delhi University student Akshay Kumar in Vasant Kunj, and, later, forging a close friendship with Vivek Oberoi.
“As a kid, I admired many people. Now, those people are my fans,” he smiled.
But Sachdeva isn’t content with merely lubricating the parties of India’s rich and famous or running his glitzy retail outlets—20 in Gurugram and a few in West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh.
Tumblr media
The two other pillars of his business are import and distribution and that’s where he is smelling the greatest opportunities.
His goal is to become the world’s biggest distributor of liquor, and he is doing everything he can to get there. He already owns a distillery in France and breweries in Chile, Spain and Scotland, where Lakeforest Wines produces its own gin, wine, and tequila. It also imports and sells its wines in India under brands such as Woodbridge, Temalo, and La Fantasia, starting at Rs 900 per bottle.
Currently, Lakeforest Wines owns around 12 liquor brands worldwide and represents one of the world’s largest wine groups, Constellation, in India. They are also launching their own tequila brand, Don Santos.
“Popular brands in the world don’t get entry into India. We partner with them and import those brands under our panels. We have already given people our retail experience. Now, we want to show how distribution is done,” said Sachdeva.
First wine, then beer
As Sachdeva gears up to conquer new realms in the liquor industry, his competitors are taking notes.
“Sachdeva has followed in the footsteps of Amandeep Singh Dhall from the Brindco Group,” said a competitor, asking to remain anonymous. “Dhall began by focusing on the import and distribution of premium wines before later expanding into beer.”
Dhall was a top player in the wine business—until his arrest last year in the Delhi excise policy case for allegedly paying kickbacks to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders. Other than Brindco, distributors such as Pernod Ricard and IndoSpirits were also named in the case and denied licence renewals in Delhi last year.
With a gap in the market, other players are vying for dominance and Sachdeva is a frontrunner.
Tumblr media
“India is developing a taste for wine, with consumption rates on the rise. Sachdeva stands out as one of the largest importers in this growing market,” said a senior official of the International Spirits and Wines Association of India (ISWAI). “The wine market is small and fragmented, but it is the most prestigious segment.”
India’s wine market dipped from Rs 1,900 crore in 2020 to Rs 1,625 crore in 2021 during the pandemic, but high-end wines weathered the storm better, according to an industry report by the consultancy firm Technopak. By 2022, the market was rebounding, with projections to reach Rs 3,795 crore by 2025.
The “premiumisation” of the alcohol industry and the growing social acceptance of wine are key drivers of this growth, with imported wines anticipated to make up 18 percent of the market, the report added.
Tumblr media
According to a Forbes report last October, wine consumption in India increased by 29 per cent in 2022, with an estimated 10 million Indians reportedly drinking it regularly.
In 2023-24 alone, Sachdeva imported wine worth over Rs 85 crore. Even his main competitors, Discovery and G-Town (formerly Jagdish Wines), purchase a portion of their imported wine from him.
Tumblr media
“Even though we now have an L1-BF licence, we still source certain wines from Neeraj because we don’t have the same access to international wine markets,” said Abhimanyu Singla, owner of Discovery Wines. “He was ahead of his time and had branded himself in a way that made him stand out.”
For Sachdeva, quality is paramount in his premium wine imports—reputation is everything. His import business follows a rigorous process—the company first procures wine samples, tastes them, and then visits the wineries in those countries to ensure consistency before starting the shipment.
“We get most of our shipments in cooler periods because temperature is a constraint and the fluctuation should not be more than 10 degrees. It’s very hot in June and July, so your wine will be cooked, and you are done,” said Sachdeva.
Much like Dhall, Sachdeva is also turning his attention to imported beer. His target is Europe, with a focus on bringing prominent beer brands from Belgium, the Czech Republic, and Germany into the Indian market.
I would go to people’s houses (in the US), teach them about wine, and do tastings with their friends. Soon, the word spread, and instead of going to wineries, people came to my store to taste wine and get it bottled
-Neeraj Sachdeva
These lofty dreams require deep pockets due to India’s prohibitively high tariffs on imported alcohol. Any finished alcoholic product entering India faces a 150 per cent basic duty, according to the ISWAI official—and that’s just the beginning.
“India has very high tariffs. After basic duty, the finished product that comes to India, goes to the states, and then there are additional duties charged on imported products, and that makes the entire process really expensive,” the official added.
But more than tariffs, Sachdeva’s biggest concern is retaining quality and freshness. To overcome this, he’s working on efficient distribution channels.
“Europe is a hub of good beers, but it’s a difficult market to crack because the transit time is too long. We plan to logistically bring the beer to India. The day it is brewed, we will get it here,” said Sachdeva.
The long game
Sachdeva’s life seems straight out of a Bollywood movie: a liquor baron living in the ultra-exclusive Camellias complex, hosting parties twice a week to strengthen his network, and playing golf with the who’s who of Gurugram. At the end of a long day, he enjoys his whiskey and vodka in the comfort of his opulent apartment, where the building even boasts its own movie theatre, cigar bar, and bowling alley.
“I am an out-and-out businessman, and you can call me a social butterfly,” said Sachdeva, whose flamboyant personality matches his bold business strategies.
Tumblr media
Despite his straightforward nature and accessibility, Sachdeva draws strict boundaries to protect grand vision. He keeps his inner circle tight, allowing only three childhood friends—who work alongside him and know every detail of his business—into his confidence. He doesn’t like to name them and keeps them out of the public eye.
Sachdeva once learned the hard way about the risks of the liquor business when he opened a store in Faridabad and ended up spending a day in jail, accused of defrauding the administration.
“That store was run by my uncle but was in my name. I closed the unit. Can you imagine, I’ve never even been to Faridabad. You can’t trust anyone in this business. Rich people in India have a lot of money, and they want to pull everyone down,” he said solemnly.
Currently, Sachdeva and his team of three friends-cum-business partners are preparing to launch an Initial Public Offering (IPO) to allow them to offer shares of the company to the general public and institutional investors. It’s a move that would place his private liquor company firmly on the industry map.
My father is very serious about his business. After graduation, he told me he wouldn’t give me any position without first understanding the business and working as a regular employee for a few years
-Riya Sachdeva, head of Lakeforest Wines’ media and public relations
He’s set a three-year target for this goal. His three-floor glass-fronted office is bustling with private equity investors, investment bankers, and auditors, all preparing him for this big step.
“You have to qualify for all the SEBI rules and regulations, get your accounts audited—listing on the stock exchange is seen as a sign of respectability for a liquor baron,” said an employee working at the headquarters of Lakeforest Wines.
At any given time, Sachdeva has multiple projects in the air. He’s even distributing a few brands for Diageo, one of the largest liquor companies in the world.
“I am going to meet Diageo India MD Ashish Parikh at Golf Club,” said Sachdeva, as he rushed out of his office on a busy afternoon in his Range Rover.
Tumblr media
Love story with wine
Sachdeva’s is not a rags-to-riches story, but his family has gone through some rough patches.
His mother, Kamlesh, who now lives in The Magnolias—a high-end gated complex next to Camellias—recalled how she had to take charge of the family’s finances after her husband, Sachdeva’s late father, suffered losses in the auto ancillary business he ran in Delhi’s Kashmiri Gate. To make ends meet, she stitched school uniforms, eventually hiring 10 workers as her business grew. But luxuries were few. When wealthier relatives visited and bought Coca-Cola bottles for the kids, Neeraj would never touch them.
“He always felt that the relatives were being arrogant and mocking our financial situation. He would say, ‘Mumma, I will be super rich someday,’” said Kamlesh, smiling.
Tumblr media
After finishing his schooling and college in Delhi, Sachdeva moved to the US in 1994, chasing the capitalist dream of becoming a wealthy businessman—not in wine, but in garment trading.
While staying with his uncle, an Intel employee in California, a visit to a vineyard changed everything. Sachdeva shifted his focus to the wine industry, taking jobs at wine stores and earning his certification as a sommelier. His entrepreneurial instincts quickly kicked in.
“While working at a store, it crossed my mind that wine tastes different every year—so what if I open a wine tasting room inside the store?” said Sachdeva.
At the time, he encountered scepticism about whether an Indian could pull off such a venture, but he persisted, and eventually, his wine tasting room became a hit. His concept was simple: pay $5 to taste a flight of 5-6 wines, and if you bought a bottle, the tasting fee would be adjusted.
Whenever I ask (Neeraj) to slow down, he says, ‘Ma, it’s not about me anymore but about the 400 people who work with me. Their lives are dependent on me. They expect an increment every year, and I can’t be selfish
-Kamlesh Sachdeva
“I would go to people’s houses, teach them about wine, and do tastings with their friends. Soon, the word spread, and instead of going to wineries, people came to my store to taste wine and get it bottled,” said Sachdeva.
This is when Sachdeva began networking. He conducted wine tastings with the MD of Intel, the Rockefeller group, and built valuable contacts in the industry. In 1996, he opened his first store in El Dorado Hills, marketing himself by conducting tastings with the city’s elite.
Business was thriving, but in the mid-2000s, his wife Ruchira set India plans in motion. As a homeopathic doctor, she was unable to practice in the US and wanted to return home.
Sachdeva followed her in 2004. Within just two months in Gurugram, it struck him that he could create a wine oasis in the city.
Tumblr media
“Back then, stores were dingy, shabby, and had black-coloured grilles as if the alcohol was being supplied from a jail,” recalled Sachdeva. “There was nothing here, and I had all the knowledge of the industry. I was sure I couldn’t fail here.”
A few initial hiccups didn’t deter him.
“It used to be the monopoly of Ponty Chadha back then. So, I met him and asked him to let me handle his import section of the business,” Sachdeva said. When the deal didn’t materialise, he devoted himself to opening his new store. Since then, there’s been no looking back.
A slight hangover
In April 2022, actor Nargis Fakhri inaugurated Lakeforest’s grandest outlet yet—an 11,000-square-foot luxury store, L1 West, in Sector 17/18, complete with a sommelier, a vast selection of high-end brands, and even a wine gallery. Sachdeva, dapper in a cream-coloured suit, was present at the event, mingling with other members of Gurugram’s high society.
Earlier this month, another Lakeforest outlet opened at the Delhi-Gurugram Rajokri border, touted in social media posts as a “woman-friendly store with an immense parking space”.
Tumblr media
Puttering around her luxury apartment, however, 75-year-old Kamlesh Sachdeva said she wishes her son would press pause for a while.  She pointed out that he has earned enough to secure the future of their family for generations.
“But whenever I ask him to slow down, he says, ‘Ma, it’s not about me anymore but about the 400 people who work with me. Their lives are dependent on me. They expect an increment every year, and I can’t be selfish,’” she said.
A devout follower of the Brahma Kumaris, a spiritual movement that advocates teetotalism and simple living, Kamlesh fills her days with meditation, kitty parties, and card games with her society friends. But it still gets lonely in her Magnolias apartment, which her son gifted her two years ago, while he shifted to the nearby Camellias.
“Such a big house, and see, I am alone. We got so involved in building our empire that we forgot to enjoy our lives,” she said, pointing to family pictures on the walls.
Tumblr media
Sachdeva’s wife, Ruchira, shares similar sentiments.
“As you grow bigger, you’re bound by obligations that must be fulfilled. You see couples enjoying their time together; we don’t have that, and I often complain about it,” said Ruchira, who runs a charitable dispensary in Gurugram.
Ruchira has been urging Sachdeva to take a trip to Europe with her to visit their younger daughter Rima, who’s studying in Spain, but he hasn’t found the time.
“I’m going alone now,” she said. “When I got married in 1994 and went to the US with him, I didn’t know we would become so big.”

Public support for Everus Harbor blockade is a highlight of Hurston Dynamics' problems with workers
Note: this article originally appeared on 13 June 2951 in Conscientious Mag
/21 January 2953/
When militant action disrupting your "business as usual" is praised by onlookers, you've made enemies among those creating your wealth
You thought not much could bother the megacorporations controlling Stanton and its workforce? Well, those at Red and Black Coalition, one of the left-wing revolutionary guerilla groups contesting the corporate nature of the system, gave them a few issues on Saturday. And while some complained and even scorned the group's brief but firm logistical and economic blockade of Everus Harbor, they also found praise from others on site.
It was a pleasant morning at Everus – as much as it can be pleasant to be looking down at a planet ravaged by industrial development – with a slight rose-tinted wrap visible around Hurston as the sun rose from behind the orbital station. Standing behind the spacious, tall glass windows offering a vista view of the planet, my ears were picking up music from the Everus local ambience in the halls behind me.
I found myself at Everus after discovering a public invitation to a tour of Hurston from organiser Gerand. A group of travel enthusiasts was joining the event to take in the sights of the planet from altitude, and I thought I'd ruin my weekend by examining the damage the neo-feudal family's business has done to its nature and biodiversity. So I signed up and hopped on one of the taxis heading to Everus, where the tour was set to launch from.
My plans for the travel were torpedoed however, as a last-minute request for editing text for an associate's history project came up while I was waking up in my hab room. I found myself making edits through the event launch time, not wanting to let them down on what I considered to be an important project.
Now standing in the lobby at the station, an hour after the tour ship had departed without me, I was looking down on Hurston and that massive half-building, half-monument to its overlord company. Then my eyes caught engine trails emerging from the atmospheric tint around the planet. Seconds later, swooshing engine sounds – picked up by exterior audio surveillance systems of Everus – were added to my aural perception of the surroundings. I took a look around – standing nearby, a few visitors were also looking out at vessels criss-crossing the immediate area outside the exterior constructions of the station, but everything looked like the usual experience in a lobby with a vista. Local comms channels had a few cues about what was happening, though.
maximiser > anyone want a ride from everus down to lorville*
Ellie-the-Egg > you are aware that everus will be blockaded soon?
maximiser > what do you mean lmao
Kenmore > Worker action
Alton-Kelteel > ATTENTION HURSTON BOUND TRAVEL: RBC has blockaded Everus Harbor in support of an ongoing Worker's Party Strike. Please ridirect all hurston bound travel to HUR L1, HUR L2, or any of Hurstons moons
A few seconds later, bursts of glowing red tracer rounds from station turrets told me it was happening. The tracers chased targets behind the frames of the station windows, but looking at their vectors, I knew they were taking aim at pilots zooming around at high speed.
youtube
Tapping my mobiGlas, I identified myself as a reporter in the station to the blockading fleet, and they allowed me to receive basic telemetry for tracking their location and callsigns (disclosure: I had a few channels that made this possible, due to my former affiliation with RBC). I began counting numbers and – whenever the pilots appeared within about five kilometres of the station – recording their ship types. Throughout their engagements outside, I identified Hornet- and Vanguard-class fighters, and later caught a glimpse of a Hammerhead gunship among the vessels piloted by them. Up to eight combat machines in total were involved, in my estimation.
Who are Red and Black Coalition?
Formed only a few years ago, RBC are a militant guerilla group targeting UEE and corporate security forces and challenging their power over the working class of the Empire.
Their vision involves waging operations against these targets and establishing "an autonomous society separate from imperial control".
No less interesting than the fights taking place outside were the exchanges that soon ensued in the local comms, with the group mentioning some of the grievances that had brought them to the place, and those in the vicinity responding to the developments.
RBC said their blockade of Everus was "intended to disrupt the supply lines of the Hurston Dynamics Corporation" and was held in support of "an ongoing Worker's Party strike" against HD. They allowed pilots to leave the station untouched, but warned off any approaching vessels, informing those piloting them that they would become targets in case they attempted to cross the blockade line.
The development brought the comms channels around Everus to life, with some declaring their displeasure at having their work disrupted – unsurprisingly. Trader Khidar made it clear by messaging "I'm not up to speed with the [drama]… am I good to do my business on this planet with the 5 ships surrounding me or naw". Others had stronger grievances, with a pilot under the callsign Rat_bat telling me they were "shot down coming into Everus right before the announcement". Subsequent comms messages between Rat_bat and RBC's Kaya66 clarified the former's vessel had been destroyed by a Hornet pilot unrelated to the Coalition, and the perpetrator had been taken out by the group in response to the act.
But among the comments were also supportive messages from those at the station, heralded by the cheer of "Down with the corpos!" from an individual under the alias of Baltyr. Announcing myself as a reporter, I asked the latter about their thoughts on what we were witnessing. They told me they had been at the station when the action started, and even though they were not familiar with Red and Black Coalition, they felt "[w]hatever group might be involved isn't as important as the issue" of anti-corporate action they approved.
SvalbardSleeperDct > @Baltyr Do you think this kind of action would serve to raise those questions in Stanton?
Baltyr > The megacorps have the weapons of wealth and coverage. I expect any questions near their core will be redacted quickly. But focusing on their extremities is where they and their control is weakest.
Frantic action inside the station soon joined the sounds of activity outside – I could see some pilots running to terminals to leave Everus as permitted by the blockaders, while others rushed back to the interior, presumably for safety.
About 20 minutes into the blockade (in my estimation), authorities released their first message broadcast through local channels, warning RBC pilots to lift the action and allow those heading to Everus to land at the station, citing UEE regulations. Response from the guerilla group was predictable, with Kenmore's reply "Words are empty" letting those in charge of the station know the organisation would not give up the action.
Den-CIG > Right, this is an unlawful assembly You should Clear out now
Den-CIG > UEE reg demand that fair trade be let into the Harbor!
Den-CIG > This is one one and only Warning!
Despite the appearance of imminent response from the local authority, RBC later said government agencies had done "nothing to stop our blockade", adding only a response from private security forces had caused the group to break off the blockade after some time.
The events did not stop there, however. Even though I had no means of following the subsequent developments in person, my channels with the Coalition were again useful in learning what took place after their pullback from Everus. Their summary said the Hammerhead involved in the action had "suffered a critical hardware failure" leading to its crew having to leave the vessel and ending up in custody. The group was transferred to the Klescher Rehabilitation Facility on Aberdeen for detention.
In response to the development, the remaining element of the fleet regrouped and later organised a daring raid on the moon to rescue those incarcerated at the compound, known to provide its managing company with questionable labour of inmates in its mines. Another operation centred around a Hurston Security depot, back on the planet above which the blockade had transpired hours before.
In their statement, RBC said the Everus action and subsequent raids had shown "the UEE and private Stanton do not have the resources to hold off a sustained campaign". The efficient rescue of their members from Klescher seems to confirm this. We will see if the Coalition's actions cause the intended damage to HD in the longer term. However, answering the question I started this report with – the megacorporations holding Stanton and its workers in their grasp clearly aren't pleased with having their business disrupted even for a brief moment. And, in my view, even more important was the vocal support this organised, militant, targeted action had among some of the people who have to deal with the dystopian reality of a corporate-owned solar system.
And that is the main takeaway from this Saturday's extraordinary developments.

Understanding Different Visa Types: A Comprehensive Guide
Tumblr media
Navigating through the intricate landscape of U.S. immigration can be a complex task, especially when it comes to understanding the array of visa types available. Whether you're planning a short visit, seeking education, looking to work, or aiming to reside permanently in the United States, selecting the correct visa type is crucial. This comprehensive guide demystifies the various visa types, helping you to understand and choose the right one for your specific needs.
Nonimmigrant Visas: For Temporary Visits
Nonimmigrant visas are designed for individuals intending to stay in the United States on a temporary basis. Each type of nonimmigrant visa caters to different purposes and requirements:
Tourist and Business Visas (B1/B2):
Purpose: The B1 visa is typically for business-related visits, while the B2 visa is for tourism, visiting family or friends, and medical treatments.
Requirements: Applicants must demonstrate their intent to return to their home country after their visit and show they have the means to support themselves during their stay.
Student Visas (F1, M1):
F1 Visa: Issued to students attending an academic program or English Language Program at a U.S. college or university.
M1 Visa: For students enrolled in vocational or other non-academic programs, excluding language training.
Requirements: Proof of admission in an approved institution, sufficient financial support, and intent to return home after studies are essential.
Work Visas (H1B, L1, O1, etc.):
H1B Visa: For individuals in specialty occupations requiring a higher education degree or its equivalent.
L1 Visa: For intra-company transferees who work in managerial positions or have specialized knowledge.
O1 Visa: For individuals with extraordinary ability or achievement in their field.
Requirements: Typically require sponsorship from a U.S. employer and evidence of qualifications for the specific visa category.
Exchange Visitor Visas (J1):
Purpose: Designed for participants in exchange programs, including students, scholars, and those on cultural missions.
Requirements: Must be sponsored by a private sector or government program and demonstrate the intent to return home post-exchange.
Understanding the specific requirements and limitations of these nonimmigrant visa types is crucial for ensuring compliance with U.S. immigration laws and a successful stay in the United States.
Immigrant Visas: For Permanent Residence
Immigrant visas are for individuals who intend to live permanently in the United States. Unlike nonimmigrant visas, they offer a path to permanent residency and potentially citizenship. Here's an overview of the key categories:
Family-Sponsored Visas:
Purpose: These visas are for family members of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents (LPRs). They are divided into immediate relative visas and family preference visas.
Requirements: U.S. sponsors must file a petition (Form I-130) and provide proof of the relationship. The availability of visas in this category depends on the relationship to the U.S. citizen or LPR and the country of origin.
Employment-Based Visas:
Categories: Ranging from EB-1 to EB-5, these visas cater to different types of workers, including those with extraordinary abilities, professionals holding advanced degrees, skilled workers, and investors.
Requirements: Most employment-based visas require a U.S. employer to sponsor the applicant and often a labor certification proving that there are no U.S. workers available for the job.
Diversity Lottery Visas:
Purpose: Also known as the "Green Card Lottery," this program offers up to 50,000 immigrant visas annually to individuals from countries with historically low rates of immigration to the U.S.
Requirements: Applicants must meet basic educational or work experience requirements and come from an eligible country.
Refugee and Asylum Visas:
Refugee Visas: For people outside their country of nationality who are unable or unwilling to return due to persecution or a well-founded fear of persecution.
Asylum Visas: For people already in the U.S. or at a port of entry who seek protection from persecution in their home country.
Requirements: Applicants must prove their persecution or fear of persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion.
Each immigrant visa category has its own application process and requirements. Understanding these differences is crucial for anyone seeking to immigrate to the United States for permanent residence.
Understanding Visa Eligibility and Requirements
Knowing the eligibility criteria and requirements is crucial for a successful visa application:
Eligibility Criteria: Each visa type has specific eligibility requirements based on the purpose of travel, duration of stay, applicant's background, and other factors. For instance, work visas often require proof of a job offer from a U.S. employer, while student visas need evidence of enrollment in a U.S. institution.
Documentation Requirements: Generally, visa applicants must provide a valid passport, application forms, photos, and supporting documents like financial statements, employment letters, or invitation letters, depending on the visa type.
Legal and Health Checks: Most visa types require applicants to pass health and legal checks. This might include medical examinations and police clearances to ensure the applicant does not pose a health or security risk.
The Visa Application Process
Understanding the steps involved in applying for a visa can simplify the process:
Completing the Application: For most visa types, the application process begins with filling out an online form, such as the DS-160 for nonimmigrant visas or the DS-260 for immigrant visas.
Paying the Visa Fee: There's typically a non-refundable visa application fee. The amount varies depending on the visa type.
Scheduling and Attending the Interview: Most applicants will need to schedule and attend an interview at a U.S. embassy or consulate. During the interview, a consular officer will determine your eligibility for the visa.
Preparing for the Interview: Applicants should prepare by organizing their documents and practicing answers to potential interview questions.
Visa Waivers and Special Programs
Some programs allow certain visitors to enter the U.S. without a traditional visa:
Visa Waiver Program (VWP): The VWP allows citizens of participating countries to travel to the U.S. for tourism or business for stays of 90 days or less without obtaining a visa.
Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA): Before traveling under the VWP, eligible travelers must receive authorization through ESTA, an automated system that determines their eligibility to travel to the U.S. under the VWP.
Special Programs: Other special programs, like the U.S.-Canada Visa Waiver Program and U.S.-Mexico Border Crossing Card, facilitate easier entry for short visits or work in specific circumstances.
Overstaying and Visa Violations
Understanding the consequences of overstaying a visa or committing visa violations is crucial:
Consequences of Overstaying: Overstaying your visa can lead to severe penalties, including being barred from re-entering the U.S. for a certain period, deportation, and difficulty obtaining U.S. visas in the future.
Avoiding Violations: Always adhere to the terms of your visa. This includes engaging only in activities permitted by your visa type and leaving the U.S. before your visa expires.
Legal Implications: Overstaying or violating the terms of your visa can also have legal consequences, potentially impacting future immigration benefits or leading to legal action.
Visa Renewals and Extensions
Renewing or extending your visa is a process that requires careful planning:
Understanding Eligibility: Not all visa types are eligible for renewal or extension. Check the specific conditions for your visa category.
Application Process: To renew or extend your visa, you typically need to fill out specific forms, pay applicable fees, and provide documentation supporting your request.
Timing: Apply well before your current visa expires to avoid any gap in your legal status. Processing times can vary, so it's wise to start the process early.
Navigating Visa Changes and Adjustments
Changing your visa type or adjusting your status requires navigating a specific process:
Change of Status: If your reason for being in the U.S. changes (for example, from a student to a worker), you may need to change your visa category. This involves filing a change of status application with USCIS.
Adjustment of Status: If you are eligible to apply for permanent residence, you can file for an adjustment of status without having to return to your home country.
Documentation and Fees: Each process requires its own set of forms, fees, and documentation. Ensure you understand these requirements to successfully navigate visa changes or adjustments.
Additional Resources and Assistance

USCIS Website: Offers comprehensive information on all visa types.
Legal Advice: Consider consulting an immigration attorney for complex cases.

MY FIRST WEEK OF FIELDWORK AND WHAT I HAVE LEARNT ABOUT PROVIDING INTERVENTION.
As I stepped into the busy atmosphere of the hospital, the smell of antiseptic blended with the tense energy pulsing through the corridors, my top green scrub and black pant spotless and my resolve unwavering. As I began my adventure as a third-year student-therapist, I was filled with excitement, eager to dive deeply into the complicated fabric of patient providing intervention, ohhh!!! not until the week showed me flames.
My first week was chock-full of terrible experiences; the first day was OK, but the second day, Wednesday, was an intervention day. So, each student OT is assigned two patients to assess and treat. Okay, I carefully organized my sessions, two of which began a day before the actual day of treatment. I intend to perform ADLs with my first client diagnosed with TB spine T12/L1 (grooming: washing, drying, moisturising, and combing the hair). With the second client's below-knee amputation, I had planned to engage in leisure activities (such as playing cards).
I had to do one session with one patient, which the supervisor will observe, and another session with another patient, which will be unsupervised. So, I went to greet my clients in the hospital's ward and inform them about the session I would be having with them, and my client informed me that the hospital did not have running water; I did not believe her, so I asked the nurses, and they confirmed the same, so I wouldn't be able to perform the grooming activity because it requires water; remember, time waits for no man. I had to devise a backup plan, which was to inform the supervisor that the session she wanted to witness will be conducted now with a second client due to this and that.
She understood. She offered me time to prepare for the session, which I did. After structure, I strolled down the corridor, planning to bring my client to the occupational therapy department for a session. Guess what? I couldn't bring the client to the department since the wound was undressed and needed to be seen by the doctor before it could be dressed, which is distressing. Time passes, and on Wednesday, we do not spend the entire day at the hospital; instead, we spend half of the day there, with the bus arriving at 12:00 to pick us up.
I had to go report these difficulties to the supervisor, and I'm already upset because I'm worried the supervisor will think I'm making excuses for not having sessions. The time passed quickly, and I returned to university without having completed any of my sessions. I was down, unhappy, guilty, and disappointed since I felt like I spent my night by sleeping late preparing for something I would not do. I could've slept instead.
The experience was negative because I was unable to run the session that I had planned. I could have learned a lot from the session because my supervisor was going to provide detailed criticism on how I could have carried out the session if I had done anything incorrectly. I did not learn anything from that session. However, I have learned that it is necessary to have as many back-up activities as possible because it is difficult to forecast what circumstances or challenges may prevent the session from taking place.

Vechain POA 2.0 ‘Finality With One Bit’ Is Scheduled for October 20th
VeChain Foundation, a prominent enterprise-grade L1 smart contract platform, took to Twitter to announce the forthcoming VeChain PoA 2.0 stakeholder vote scheduled for October 20, spanning a week. Alongside this event, VeChain will unveil its new decentralized voting platform, 'VeVote'.
Rather than replacing the Proof-of-Authority (PoA) consensus, VeChain's development team opted to integrate a finality gadget named Finality with One Bit (FOB) to operate dual consensus modes—Nakamoto and BFT—simultaneously.
The latest iteration of PoA 2.0 has undergone testing on the testnet, awaiting deployment on the mainnet once stakeholders approve.
Block finality, crucial for modern blockchain systems, guarantees absolute security for qualifying blocks. VeChain sought to enhance its consensus algorithm with this property, essential for blockchain reliability.
PoA 2.0 aims to amalgamate diverse consensus mechanisms, a vital aspect for contemporary blockchain systems, according to the foundation. By decoupling finality from PoA, the design preserves VeChain's system usability and robustness while introducing minimal complexity and additional network communication.
VeChain, renowned for its ultra-low carbon, highly scalable blockchain architecture, employs blockchain technology to address real-world challenges, notably in supply chain management. Collaborations with industry giants like Walmart China, BYD Auto, and Shanghai Gas underscore its significance in enterprise solutions.
Recent partnerships with OrionOne and TruTrace, both SaaS firms, alongside UCO Network for biofuel sector infrastructure, showcase VeChain's diversification into various industries. Notably, VeChain plans to develop VeCarbon, a blockchain-based carbon emission data management SaaS platform.
The introduction of VeChain's PoA 2.0 and its accompanying decentralized voting platform marks significant strides towards enhancing blockchain consensus and governance mechanisms. These developments reaffirm VeChain's commitment to innovation and its mission to revolutionize real-world business processes through blockchain technology.

Everything You Should Know About Contract Staffing Services
Temporary staffing, also referred to as contract staffing, is a project-based staffing model in which a staffing agency hires a worker for a client business.
Originating in the early 20th century, it has grown as businesses sought cost reduction and increased flexibility. Today contract staffing is an important part of the workforce in many countries and industries.
Tumblr media
How Do Contract Staffing Agencies Work?
Contract staffing agencies act as go between job seekers and client companies seeking temporary or project-based workers. They recruit candidates based on client requirements and onboard them as employees.
The chosen people are assigned to the client's facilities for work, and the staffing company manages their payroll, leaves, benefits, and other HR matters. The client can renew, hire, or end the contract at the end.
A few industries and sectors that use contract staffing are:
IT sector: uses contract staff for software or coding specialization and L1 and L2 support.
Healthcare: Employs contract nurses, physicians, and allied health professionals.
Finance and Accounting: Fills seasonal or project-specific financial roles.
Manufacturing and Production: Outsources annual maintenance, preventive maintenance, and grey-collared jobs.
Retail and Customer Service: Hires temporary staff during peak seasons or sales.
Government and Public Sector: Uses contract staffing for project managers, IT specialists, and administrative staff.
Legal Services: Hires paralegals, legal assistants, and attorneys for case-specific workloads.
E-commerce: Outsources supply chain, delivery, and customer care.
When Should Organizations Consider Contract Staffing?
Contract staffing helps companies to adjust to shifting labor demands by scaling up or down as necessary. It is cost-effective, and firms can have access to specialized talents and knowledge without making long-term recruiting commitments. Here are a few advantages of contract staffing. When selecting whether to use contract staffing, the company should consider its strategic objectives, budget constraints, and labor planning.
Legal and Compliance Problems in Contract Staffing
Adherence to labor laws: fair pay, worker classification, anti-discrimination.
Clear role definitions and termination procedures.
Mandatory tax compliance.
Importance of proper immigration documentation.
Application of industry-specific regulations.
Vital background checks, record-keeping, and data protection.
Factors to Consider When Using Contract Staffing Services
Define contract staff roles and responsibilities.
Establish a clear budget for contract staffing.
Determine contract duration and project-specificity.
Choose a reputable staffing agency.
Ensure compliance with labor, tax, and employment regulations.
Outline contract termination, renewal, or extension terms.
Enforce non-disclosure and confidentiality agreements.
Establish key performance indicators and expectations.
Ensure seamless onboarding and training.
Plan a smooth exit strategy and data handover procedures.
Establish a feedback mechanism for staff performance evaluations.
The Future Of Contract Staffing
Contract staffing is projected to expand in the coming years as the gig economy and remote work trends shape the employment environment. Organizations are turning to contract employment for agility and cost-effectiveness as the demand for specialized skills, flexibility, and scalability grows.
