Presidential Tribunal: INEC closes defence in Obi’s petition

The Independent National Electoral Commission, on Tuesday, opened and closed its defence in Peter Obi’s petition challenging the result of the February 25 presidential election. Recall that Bola Tinubu was declared the winner of the election and was sworn in as the president on May 29. Obi of the Labour Party is urging the Presidential Election Petition Court in Abuja to set aside Tinubu’s victory on the grounds that the Independent National Electoral Commission failed to comply with the electoral laws. At the resumed proceedings on Tuesday, counsel for INEC, A.B Mahmoud, SAN, proceeded to close its defence in the petition after calling the first witness, Lawrence Bayode, an assistant director in charge of its ICT department. Bayode had also testified yesterday in aid of the commission’s defence against the petition filed by Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party. He was led in evidence by the commission’s lead counsel, A.B. Mahmoud, SAN, who also tendered some documents in the course of the proceedings. The witness, under cross-examination, said that even if blurred documents were downloaded from INEC’s Result Viewing portal, it will not affect the physical results as recorded in the polling units results, otherwise called form EC8A. When examined by counsel for the All Progressives Congress, L.O Fagbemi, SAN, the witness told the court that the glitch recorded during the last presidential election did not affect the collation of the election results. He added that if what was downloaded from the IreV are not clear the physical results could also be obtained. The petitioners also tendered the E- transmission saver Web and compliance form through the witness. It was admitted and marked as evidence. The witness told the court that the pre-production test was carried out before the election. The witness agreed with counsel for the petitioners, Patrick Ikweato, SAN, that the report of the E-Transmission application identifies remediation to be undertaken to resolve the high vulnerability identified in the report. The five-member panel headed by Justice Haruna Tsammani adjourned the court proceeding to tomorrow (Wednesday) when Tinubu and his vice, Kassim Shetima will open their defence. Read the full article

You hadn’t made it. Again. In the dark space of the practice room, you let the tears fall as the full force of not making debut for the third time washed over you. Hugging your knees, you couldn’t stop crying as the CEO’s words burned themselves into your mind.

“It’s been seven years, Y/N! Yet you are still no good! Do you really want to debut?!! Look at you!! You are still no better, maybe even worse, than a seven month trainee!!”

You still remembered your mom dropping you off at the front steps of Pledis’ main building for your audition, seven years ago.

“Take care, Y/N-ah… I’ll be cheering you on~! And your dad will always be watching you from Heaven. Y/N fighting~!”

But now she was gone, and the last thing she had ever heard from you was that you had failed to debut for the second time with PRISTIN. You had totally failed at being a competent daughter, much less in making your family proud of you.

Jonghyun nodded, walking calmly out of the office with burning eyes. He knew that the CEO absolutely hated you and that he had to get you out of this company. Even if it meant leaving him. The CEO would never let you debut, not with how deeply ingrained his hatred for you was. Minhyun, Dongho, Minki, and Youngmin nodded silently at him, so he took off running.

“Y/N-ah! Where are you?!”

All he wanted was to see you smile again. As much as he wished, you never completely opened up to him. Or anyone else for that matter. As stubborn as you were, you refused to believe that you would break under all this pressure. Unlike everyone else, you never saw yourself for who you really were. You never saw how broken and tired you looked every time you cried. And it made Jonghyun feel completely helpless. But now, he thought he had a way to get you out to fulfill your dream.

You looked up as the door creaked open gently, slight pouring in through the doorway to reveal your precious boyfriend’s face. And you felt all the guilt immediately rush to you as he practically fell over himself to rush to you, wrapping you in a giant bear hug.

You thought you had already cried all your tears out, but his words re-opened the floodgates as everything you had ever been ridiculed for came rushing back to you. Crying harder, you let him rock you gently and whisper little comforts that only he could pull off. Why? He saw you for who you were: the sweet girl that brought a smile to everyone’s face with her quirks and talent. Looking up, you saw him smiling down at you with the proudest smile on his lips and the most lovestruck eyes you had ever seen. Trying not to smile, you snuggled in closer to him, eternally grateful for his comfort. You had to have been a saint in your past life to deserve someone like Jonghyun now.

“I love you too, which is why I think you should leave Pledis to make your dreams come true.”

You sat up straight, almost banging your head into his chin.

“WHAT?! I don’t even know if I can make it into some other company if I’ve missed debut three times!”

“Baby, please just hear me out. You shouldn’t be crying your eyes out every time you talk to the CEO. That’s so unfair to you and I know that you’re a strong girl, but enough is enough. I can’t watch you deal with him anymore. As your boyfriend, it’s my job to protect you and always be there for you. I have a friend at FNC and there’s word that they’re looking to debut a solo artist. I know that you can do it, Y/N.”

Looking into his eyes, you saw the deep sincerity that lay in them. Just with that one look, you could see how hard this was for him to tell you to go so that you could achieve your dream. Smiling softly, you wiped your tears and hugged him tightly.

Full list of 257 judges to hear petitions

A total of 257 judges will hear petitions arising from the 2023 general elections in Nigeria, according to a list by the National Judicial Council (NJC). Proceedings at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal and State Election Petition Tribunals are expected to commence fully in May after the Worker’s Day holiday. Nigerians have shifted their attention to the tribunals as aggrieved candidates in the February 25 and March 18 contests attempt to overturn victories. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued Certificates of Return to all winners of various positions. Already, hundreds of petitions have been filed to challenge the outcome of the presidential, National Assembly, governorship and state assembly polls. But more are expected due to the April 15 supplementary elections in more than 20 states, in view of the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022. Section 132 (7) & (8) allows for petitions to be filed within 21 days after the declaration of results. The respondents have 21 days to respond, while the court has 180 days to decide. The senior judicial officers to preside were drawn from State High Court, FCT High Court, Federal High Court and National Industrial Court.
