Pt. IV: The Do-Over

Summary: After finally getting his feelings out in the open, Taika decides that it's right about time that he takes (Y/N) out for a proper date. He calls it a do-over for the last one he took her on.

You stared at the new dress in the mirror. Pure white, strappless, slits down both legs and a lovely, black belt around the waist. You smoothed out the bottom half of the dress and tucked a sweet little hair behind your ear. For once, you were happy to be dressed up by someone else. You couldn't help but be a little nervous, though. You were always so nervous before dates, even if you knew the guy pretty well. You just had a tendency of worrying about tripping over your heels or going to the bathroom then come out with the back of your dress tucked into your underwear. You had nothing to worry about this time, but you still worried.

Your phone suddenly went off and made you jump. You reached for it, a gentle smile on your face as you read the notification.

'I'm outside, darling. Hope you're just as excited as I am! ;)'

You giggle to yourself, tuck your phone in your handbag and take one last look at yourself, as if you thought there was a massive smudge in your makeup that could ruin your night. You put on a smile, fix a little uncomfortable place in your heel, did a little body wiggle and went to your door and opened it.

Your smile got wider. The man of the hour was standing right in front of you, dressed in a navy blue tux and a snow white rose in the breastpocket. His hand was holding yours, the moment he saw you and he brought you closer with just a simple beckoning tug.

"Your boyfriend must have wonderful tastes, because that dress looks absolutely amazing on you," Taika purred with a kiss to the back of your hand.

"Well, my boyfriend is pretty wonderful," you hummed back and softly tugged your hand away so you could wrap your arms around his neck. He set his hands on your waist and leaned down to press his lips against yours. Your bottom lip was encased in his and you felt his hands creep away from your waist, to your hips, then to your ass. You had to pull away from the kiss before he could do that, "No, no, sir. We can't do that yet. We still have a date."

Taika only half groaned, but you knew he didn't mind. He must have made one hell of a reservation if it even made him pass up the opportunity for sex.

"Your ride awaits you, madam and sir," you heard someone call from down on the curb and you leaned to look past Taika, who briefly moved to look with you.

"Holy shit-- You brought Robert too?" You smiled and looked up at Taika. He was grinning and biting his bottom lip slightly.

"Just wouldn't be the same without him. I'd miss him if I didn't let him drive tonight," Taika said, taking your hand in his and escorting you down to the curb.

"Good evening, miss!" Robert greeted you with a very bright smile and a tip of his cap.

"Robert, my lanta! You have no idea how great it is to see you!" You smiled right back at him. "Did you ever get together with that one woman you saw outside that restaurant?"

"I actually did," Robert smiled. "Never knew a chap like myself could get a date at my age! I'm actually going out with her, tonight, thanks to Mr. Waititi!"

"Oh, really now?" You cocked a brow and grinned over at your date who was casually and quietly enjoying the banter he wasn't involved in.

"Wanted him to have a little fun too, doll. I was gonna tell you, don't be surprised when we end with a new driver back home tonight," he smiled down at you and nudged you with his hip.

"Well, no time to waste! Your evening awaits you!" Robert bounced on his heels then opened the door. Luckily, it wasn't an old fart limo that you were riding in tonight. Richard turned the car off and in a very merry voice he said, "It's not a joke, miss! He even showed me his online ticket to prove he had a reservation this time!"

You're face was expressionless for a very long while. It was like Ross whenever he found out he was the father of Rachel's baby.

"You promise this isn't a fib?" You ask the man next to you, quietly. Your lip was softly quivering.

"I have no reason to lie to you anymore," he said back with a very warm gaze and a matching smile. His fingers interlocked with yours and he brought it up to kiss the back of your hand again. Gosh, you loved it when he did that.

Richard eventually got the two of you out of the car, and you waved goodbye to him, side you wouldn't be seeing him after dinner. He told you that his date was waiting for him down the street, then waved you off as well to have your pleasant evening and pleasant dinner with Taika in the most expensive restaurant in the entirety of L.A.

You could practically smell the money on the people around you while they stuffed themselves fat on cash salads.

"I swear, if they end up taking us down to a sub-basement or something for people who want to think their eating rich, I'm going to flip my shit," you said teasingly while you secretly looked around at the sparkling chandeliers with much awe and admiration.

"I don't even think this place has a sub-basement, so you're in luck!" Taika laughed as he pulled you along, up to a waiter where he flashed him the reservation on his phone. The waiter, dressed in a deep red vest and black slacks, nodded at the confirmation, grabbed two menus then escorted you to your table, which just so happened to be on the second floor. Lucky you, you got to go through the little archway leading to the stairs, gayly dressed in evergreen leaves and electric lights.

As you sat down at your seat, you took the time to admire the place even more. The food made your stomach growl, the lighting cast upon Taika's face made your heart flutter and you were dressed ever so perfectly. Wow... just a week ago, you could have never imagined Taika doing something so lavish for you. Now, it felt like every act of kindness he did for you was a gift from the king, himself.

"Enjoying the scenery, darling?" You heard Taika say from across the table and it caught your attention in a flash.

"How can I not be?" You said, giving him a warm, wide smile. It made him melt, you could tell. The look he had made it easy to spot that he was falling deeper in love with you, right before your very eyes. He reached over for your hand and once he had it, he caressed it with his thumb. He continued to hold it while he spoke to you, all the way up until the scheduled bottle of wine arrived and the waiter was back to take your order...

It eventually fell quiet between you two and your just stared into each other's eyes, exasperated with how much you both just shared with each other and taking a few moments to look back at the story you created. It was a mixture of feelings, jotting out in random directions, rough around the edges, but soft as an angel's wings. You couldn't be happier with it.

"Before we start taking notes," you said, laughing and tucking a stray strand if hair behind your ear, "I just want to say... I think this is the best date I've ever had. No, I'm not trying to inflate your ego, but... You deserve it this time. I'm proud of you, Tai, as weird as it is." You giggle at your own speech and lean in to kiss his forehead. Instead of his forehead, however, you come in contact with his lips instead, by his own devices.

Once the two of you were in the car and the door was shut, it was all dark and very quiet, except for the slow breathing of you and the other two people in the car and the quiet radio, turned to an oldies station.

Test Drives: Morphe, Rimmel, and IBY Beauty

Happy New Year you guys! I know that we’re technically two weeks past the official start of the new year, but it’s my first beauty article of the year. I have a lot of stuff that’s come in over the last two months so I’ll be busy creating Test Drives for quite a while. Anywho, I’m kicking off the 2020 Test Drives with   a range of products from Morphe, Rimmel, and IBY Beauty. As usual, I’ll let you know what was gifted by the brand versus something I purchased. 

Morphe Fluidity Foundation in F4.80 (purchased)

Even though I have way more foundation than I could ever use, I ended up picking up this and the other Morphe item I’m reviewing in today’s article when I was at the Newport Mall a few days ago. I opted to have my color matched by one of the associates in the store and she did a great job. The F4.80 hue is labeled as “Rich with golden undertones” which is perfect for me because I have warm golden undertones. 

What I like: 

Even though this is a full coverage foundation, it’s not heavy or cakey. It blends in with my skin so well, and is very lightweight. Plus, it matches my paler winter skin tone perfectly. It’s fragrance free as well. 

What could be better:

Nothing, I liked this product and had no issues with it!

Morphe Fluidity Concealer in C4.35 (purchased)

I’m normally not terribly impressed by concealers because I have serious under eye bags. Like I’m not even kidding. I’ve had visible under eye bags since I was in high school. And unless I want to have cosmetic treatments done to banish them, they’re just a fact of my life. The Morphe Fluidity Concealer is designed to create full coverage and last for 24 hours. 

What I like:

I’m AMAZED because this really hid my under eye bags. And I’ve tried A LOT of different brands from Tarte’s Shape Tape to even IT Cosmetics’ Bye Bye Undereye, and neither of these cult fave’s have covered my under eyes like Morphe’s did. And I didn’t have to cover half my face in concealer to achieve this result.

What could be better:  Nothing! This really works!

Rimmel London Stay Glossy in Date Night (gifted via Amazon Vine)

So this was an item that was given to me through the Amazon Vine influencer program. This is a straightforward gloss from Rimmel London that promises to moisturize and last for at least six hours of wear. 

What I like: 

Date night is an amazing color that for my skin tone can be a great neutral. While it’s pinkish, it’s not obnoxiously bubble gum pink. 

What could be better: 

There’s a strong mineral or petroleum oil smell coming from this lip gloss. Honestly, the best way to describe it would be to say that it smelled like Luster’s Pink Oil Moisturizer back in the 90s (because I haven’t used it in decades and for all I know they fixed the stench). 

IBY Beauty Carry On Face Palette (gifted)

A travel-friendly collection of highlight, blush, and eyeshadows that helps to declutter your travel makeup tote and gives you everything you need to create day to night looks. One side of the palette features three highlights and one blush while the other side of the palette comes with 9 shadows — two of which are matte and the remaining seven are shimmer hues.

What I like: 

In terms of travel friendly, you can’t go wrong with an “all-in-one” style palette. The slim palette can slip into your purse, carryon or checked bag if you’re daring enough to check your makeup. Plus, the large pans means that you’re getting a significant amount of product. Pigments are rich and you don’t need a lot of product to get the color to pay off, even on darker skin tones.

Specifically for the eyeshadow side, it’s very shimmer heavy. There are only two of the nine pans that are matte. So, people who aren’t as experienced with creating beauty looks might be intimidated by the shimmer-focused slant. 

The Verdict

There was something to love in everything that I tried today, but hands down the breakout “game changer” was the Morphe Fluidity concealer. As someone used to not getting total coverage in their concealer, having my under eye bags completely hidden with Morphe’s concealer was a new experience for me. Test Drives: Tatcha, CTZN & Face Atelier

It’s a new month and that means it’s time for some more Test Drives! Since it’s ridiculously hot out and the 4th of July, I decided to do a very simple makeup look that is ultra sheer so that my face doesn’t melt off before the fireworks begin! In my previous Test Drives post, I mentioned how there were a few items that I played with for that look which were pretty cool and deserved their own review article. And those are going to be items that I’m reviewing today. I’ll be covering Tatcha’s The Silk Canvas, CTZN’s Nudiversal Lip Duos and Face Atelier’s Face Finish setting spray. As usual, I’ll outline which items were gifted to me by the brand and which I purchased. Full details on my makeup look will be at the end of this post.

Tatcha The Silk Canvas (purchased)

Okay so in a previous Test Drives post, I reviewed E.L.F. Cosmetics’ Poreless Putty Primer. And while I liked it, I wasn’t able to address whether it was a true dupe to Tatcha’s The Silk Canvas because I didn’t have that product to compare it to. But, I ended up going out and buying the travel size version of The Silk Canvas last month. Now that I’ve used both, I can honestly say that there is no comparison between The Silk Canvas and Poreless Putty Primer.

While E.L.F.’s dupe is a faithful attempt to capture the essence of what Tatcha’s product promises on and delivers, E.L.F.’s is definitely different and the experience between the two is noticeable. First off, E.L.F.’s primer applies wet/damp and then dries down. And if you’re heavy handed, it’s hard to properly buff it in as you’re left with weird beads of product all over your face. Plus while it is a faithful primer that offers a solid base for makeup applications, it did feel a little heavy as opposed to a traditional silicone primer like Smashbox or even E.L.F.’s other bottle-based primers.

In contrast, The Silk Canvas is really lightweight and breathable. Yes, a little goes a long way so you still shouldn’t be caking it on, but it buffs out easier. And most importantly, it doesn’t go on wet. It’s a true velvet-like balm. If I was going to recommend a true dupe to Tatcha’s The Silk Canvas, it would be Veil Cosmetics’ Automatte because of the texture, application and finish.

My only complaint about The SIlk Canvas is exactly the same as what I had with E.L.F.’s Poreless Putty Primer. Considering the extreme price difference between Tatcha and E.L.F., would it have killed the brand to include an applicator sponge?!

CTZN Nudiversal Lip Duo in Mexico City & Maldives (gifted)

Everyone knows that “nude” is subjective. So, often enough when a brand claims to make a nude lip, that “nude” can be pretty narrowly applied to one specific segment of the population—fair skinned people. But CTZN is turning that around with a ridiculous number of shades that actually are nude for a variety of skin tones. With 25 shades to choose from, there’s truly a nude out there for you within their collection. I ended up picking both Mexico City and Maldives. For today’s look, I wore Mexico City as a base and added a small swipe of Maldives to add a bit of warmer color. And as you can see from the pic, this is truly my nude.

I love that these nudes are dual ended. So, if you prefer a more matte effect, you can go with the lipstick. However, it’s a very hydrating matte—so no dry etched out lip lines! And then if you prefer more of a sheen, choose the lip gloss end. I opted for the matte side because I’m still stuck on mattes for the most part these days.

Another thing that I love is that, while it is an online brand, they took the time to photograph models of various skin tones wearing each of the 25 shades so you could clearly see how each shade will look on the tone closest to yours. And for the curious, the reason I ended up picking the two hues I did is because for a true nude effect, my skin tone fell between both of these shades and I couldn’t choose between the two.

Face Atelier Face Finish (gifted)

It’s summer and that means that you need to be properly prepping and finishing your face if you’re trying to wear a full look in hot weather. Face Finish from Face Atelier is meant to serve as a prep, setting, and refresh spray—giving you more bang for your buck. If you’re going to use it as a prep, spray it onto your face before you begin to apply makeup. And for setting or refreshing, simply spritz over your face after you finish your makeup or throughout the day so that your look lasts as long as you do.

I think this is a pretty great product with almost no scent (there is a bit of a cucumber smell in there so if you’re scent sensitive beware). My only complaint is that the spray isn’t a soft mist but rather a forceful stream. So, try not to spray it too close to your face otherwise you can end up wet rather than dewy as it dries down.

Final Thoughts

This is one of those Test Drives where I genuinely loved everything I tested. I definitely think the comparison between E.L.F.’s Poreless Putty Primer and Tatcha’s The Silk Canvas are greatly exaggerated—and I wanted to believe the hype. There’s just no comparison between the two, so I’m not sure who started that rumor but they need to stop spreading it. CTZN is an awesome brand for focusing on true inclusivity with a beauty niche that can be really complicated. And Face Atelier’s Face Finish is a great way to set your look. And the small size means you can easily take it with you when you’re out for the day or if you’re traveling.

Valentine’s Bridal Beauty Picks

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. And that means plenty of people in relationships are hoping for the brass ring—or in this case, the ring. February 14th is like the New Year’s Eve of engagement season, which is usually just after Thanksgiving and runs through Valentine’s Day. With that in mind, this huge lover’s holiday is a great time to pull out all of the stops beauty-wise. While this isn’t a test drive post, I do have some great recommendations of beauty items that you can rock to look your best for that big date night this week.
