when i was a kid, and i was figuring out sex and attraction - or not really figuring it out, just letting it crash around in my head - i was really fascinated by the heavily manipulated, heavily stylized expressions of sexuality that you see most often in media. i guess what you would call the male gaze. women in contorted poses and uncomfortable clothing, set against backgrounds that had no basis in reality. i found it in my mom’s victoria’s secret catalogs, even in ads for television shows, and would stare at them not knowing why but needing to (before i figured out i could rip them out and keep them, that’s how young we’re talking).
it was the discomfort that i was drawn to, the alien aspect of it, the fact that these images were completely unreal. i was aware of objectification in a very literal way. we have a tendency these days to use the word “objectify” to mean “find sexually attractive” which is not what it means. it means reducing a whole person with agency and identity to a tool or item that you can use. liking how someone looks and becoming curious about who they are is not objectification. liking the appearance of someone’s body parts and separating them from their identity and agency is. for most people that means wanting to have sex with someone without getting to know them. for me, when i was a kid, it more of liking how someone looked and wondering what it’d be like to use them as a chair.
naturally this created a lifelong interest in body horror, it’s why i love both hr giger and 3d artists like kytten janae and josefin jonsson (i’m partial to the candy colored, pastely girly type of body horror honestly). and while i still indulge in this stuff, that raw way of thinking about sexuality from when i was a kid is generally long gone from mind.
but today i was browsing through kylie jenner’s instagram and saw this video. and it triggered all of those thoughts at once. i think it should be fairly obvious why, but i don’t know if that says more about kylie jenner or me.

Terrell developed a singular style early in his artistic career, garnering national recognition while he was still in high school. At a young age, he was participating in and curating gallery shows, and co-created Tensquare, an online and virtual gallery. By the time he started at the School of Arts Institute Chicago in 2016, he had launched his artist brand, terrell®, and built a body of work that revealed a talent far beyond his age. In 2020, Terrell graduated from the School of Arts Institute Chicago at the age of 22, while contributing to major projects for Opening Ceremony, Club Quarantine, Second Sky Fest, and Redbull music. A lifelong dedicated student who was constantly sharpening his eye and style, Terrell never confined himself to a singular medium within digital art. He created clothing, visuals for musicians, music videos, zines and books, prints, live streams, and curated exhibits. His final school project, debuted at the 2020 Spring Undergraduate Exhibition at SAIC, was Physical Retrospective I: 2015-2020, a curated selection of his own artwork with the volume and organization of an artist with decades of experience. Terrell’s instantly iconic work evoked a glowing, unobtainable, meticulous neo-nostalgia that resonated both with his peers and the art community at large. He was widely admired and respected for his incredible sense of composition, color, and curation. Terrell was an active member of the LGBTQ community both online and off, and had an ardent passion for social justice. He upheld those principles to the highest standard, and incorporated them into his practice and lifestyle. Many believed that Terrell Davis was destined for artistic super-star greatness. His sudden absence after a brief illness has left a hole in the world that will never be replaced. His impact is undeniable and everlasting, and he will be deeply missed by his peers. The digital arts community has come together to honor and remember Terrell’s incredibly artistic legacy. Please consider donating or sharing this campaign to help with unexpected and mounting medical and funeral costs. All donations go directly to the Davis Family.
