Call me a basic bitch, but I'm reading Dungeon Meshi, and can someone explain something for me?

(Question below the break for spoiler-y reasons. If you haven't gotten to chapter 33 in the manga, you've been warned.)

So I'm on chapter 33 of Dungeon Meshi, and I'm a bit confused. Kubra is talking about his weird hobby of reading people and making connection, and says he can't wait for Laius and Falin's "True Natures" to be exposed...then proceeds to tell of a time when they basically got scammed by their (at the time) comrades as justification for how they aren't good people who care about others, so they don't deserve to be the rulers of the dungeon. Am I missing something here? Is this a mistranslation in the scan I'm reading, because that makes negative sense to me. Like, he literally says "They're not good, honest people. They don't give a damn about others." Because they got tricked into giving up the money they earned by someone they considered a friend? Can someone please explain this to me?

I just finished the Kübra series and it was incredibly good. It is very engaging, the acting is brilliant and the story is very well written. It kept my interest all the way through, and it was also thought-provoking. P.S.: I will make a gif of Aslihan Malbora.
