In today's episode we share our predictions for The Last Jedi. Because IT’S ALMOST HERE.
We discuss what we expect to see from the movie as a whole, as well as our predictions regarding the Force plot and Resistance plot, with emphasis on key characters and character dynamics.
Irina and Lee share their prediction bingo cards for TLJ:
We share our wish lists:
We share our deepest, darkest fears regarding TLJ and the sequel trilogy, and find it very therapeutic. Reywalker/Rey Solo/ReyPoe, anyone?
Lastly, a word on the crossguard lightsaber pulling shenanigans: although Denise did not participate in this episode, if you've seen our recent TLJ speculation podcasts you've heard her talk about the protective stance that Rey takes towards Kylo Ren in a lot of the marketing images for episode 8, and her questioning whether it was foreshadowing. With the release of TLJ tv spot #22, which shows Rey Force-pulling Kylo Ren's lightsaber and wielding it apparently against Snoke, we have to wonder whether Denise is onto something after all. Why is Rey pulling Kylo's saber? Is he incapacitated in some way?
gif source: @degouges
More importantly, continuing our discussion of Kylo’s lightsaber as a symbol of his masculinity, Rey has drawn his distinctive lightsaber to her, essentially claiming it as if it belonged to her. What would Freud say?
Regardless of what your interpretation is, this only bodes well for the dynamics between these characters going forward.
And no matter how it all turns out, it looks like this is going to be an amazing movie. We hope you enjoy it, and may we all be surprised for the best. ^^
We'd love to hear your predictions and wishes/fears for TLJ. Reply below to let us know what you think!
P.S. today’s episode features artwork from @ksart-things and @theforces-of-destiny. Visit their blogs to see their gorgeous fanart.

The premise of this series is that the three leads of the Sequel Trilogy, Rey/Ben Solo/Finn all share the same core conflict: childhood abandonment. This conflict has played out in different ways in each case because of differences in temperament/personality, environment and subsequent life story.
In today's episode we discuss the psychology of Rey's characterization, particularly focusing on how her trauma has impacted her story arc and her key relationships, especially with Ben Solo.
We overview object relations theory to understand how Rey’s abandonment has helped shape her unconscious belief of being flawed/defective and therefore likely to be abandoned again in the future. Because of the emotional deprivation she has suffered Rey desperately craves affection, but her fear of abandonment has led her to at various times repress (unconsciously done) or suppress (consciously done) the desire to form deep connections.
We talk about the concept of splitting as a normal phenomenon in childhood development and also as a maladaptive coping strategy that is often present in Rey’s approach to people and situations, and in her view of herself.
According to object relations theory, children find the idea of “being bad” intolerable, and therefore that aspect of themselves is split off and repressed in the unconscious. We believe that Rey’s inability to see herself as a whole person with flaws and with virtues impacts her ability to see others with any sort of nuance and to be comfortable with ambiguity. We believe that her worldview is dominated by splitting in part because of the age at which her abandonment occurred.
Rey rejects “monster” Kylo Ren but reaches out to her idealized Ben Solo only to reject him again when he fails to meet her expectations. This again is in part due to her use of splitting as a defense against her own imperfections which she unconsciously fears will lead to abandonment.
Rey’s unconscious fear of rejection and resistant attachment comes across as some of the avoidant and even self-sabotaging behaviors she demonstrates in TFA and TLJ.
With her parental abandonment as an internalized unconscious template for how relationships are meant to work, her dynamic with Luke Skywalker takes on another layer of depth.
We discuss the defenses underlying her attack of Luke, namely displacement of the anger she feels towards her parents and identification with Ben Solo, who was also rejected by Luke.
We discuss the multiple layers underlying Rey’s decision to remain on Jakku in the role of scavenger, and go over the concept of learned helplessness and the unconscious defense known as regression to underscore how Rey is essentially approaching her problem from the perspective of the five-year-old who was abandoned in Jakku.
In our overview of Rey’s use of defense mechanisms we also discuss acting out, denial and reaction formation. These defenses have played out in her dynamic with Kylo Ren, and we discuss key instances in which we observe this both in Episode VII and VIII.
Why Reylo Works:
Because of their unique situational insight into each other and their ability to connect through the Force, we believe that Reylo is built to cut to the heart of the conflict at the core of these two people and it can serve as a catalyst for self-actualization and healing.
In Rey’s case being seen for who she is, flaws and all, and being accepted as such is as much nourishment as her missing portions. As important as her other relationships are, there is no one who can see her and understand her the way that Ben Solo can.
Importantly, she can offer the same to him, and this will help him as much as it will help her; in many ways Rey is disavowing the Kylo Ren aspect of Ben in much the same way she is disavowing the imperfect aspects of herself. Up until recently, her sense of “imperfect Rey” also included her Force ability, the nameless “thing” within her that she could not understand, the thing she is drawn to but also fears. Kylo Ren has already helped her connect to the Force and even gain mastery of it through his stealth mentoring of her.
We believe that achieving a more integrated view of him and accepting him for who he is will further help her to view herself in a more integrated way as well. It goes without saying that acceptance does not remove accountability, Padme.
Lastly we discuss Rey Nobody and why it works, a bit about Rey’s sexual awakening as an important aspect of the story being told in the ST, the fan response to Rey’s character and some of the actual flaws in Rey’s character design, namely the lack of externalized action in her heroine’s journey.

Hello fellow human. I love being part of this fandom. We have had so many ups lately. I truly feel like the Rian and the Reylo community is one today. ksart-things lovely artwork revealed what we known all along about Rian that he has shipped Reylo since he took on episode 8. He is a blessing to Star Wars. He seems to be all about the red string of fate and it has inspired me. I'm going to wear a bright red shirt for the premiere and glitter for Carrie. The force will be strong with this movie.

@ksart-things @jediwhinetrick @frozenmusings @sibery and all the artists who draw Adam, I hope you know that I didn't intend to criticize your work when I wrote this, righ?
I just wanted to comment on the fact that sometimes, we "idealize" some of the actors we admire. I saw works (not just on Tumblr) that made Adam's face look perfectly symetrical and it made me think that the artists wanted to make him fit into a beauty standard that doesn't apply to him at all!
I love Adam Driver's face! The first time I saw him, I was shocked by how different he was from the young actors I usually see. It was refreshing to see someone so unconventional and so indeniably charming.
I said "crooked" nose, but maybe it is not a good description. I have a what I call a crooked nose, actually (a lot of Arab women do!)! Maybe that's why I want people to accept them XD
Anyhow, I really hope I didn't offend anybody! It is never my intention, my friends. I am sorry if you felt I was criticizing your art.
@sibery and @ksart-things , I draw a bit, but just for fun. I am not nearly as talented as you are, but I understand very well what you mean. I don't think your work suffers from oversimplification, on the contrary! An artist has to make choices when recreating the image of a character or an object and still manage to invoke their particularities. I don't believe you have to overload a work with details to make it more striking! Just to tell you, I love abstract art. I love the faculty of some artists to use the minimal amount of detail to invoke a form of a movement (don't get me started! I could write about Matisse for a long, long time!).
I am certain a lot of Tumblr users would agree that we have great, hugely talented artists on Tumblr and specifically in the Reylo community. What I said about Adam's nose was not the result of one single work or artist's body of work. I just noticed a general tendancy on the internet to...how do I put this?...clean up Adam's looks? Like they do with the portraits on magazine covers! I hate that!
Well, let me just reiterate: I love you guys, you are awesome artists and fans! And Adam is just an odd beautiful something that we have never seen before and he is awesome and talented and I want him to work with every single director he loves (cause that's what he wants) and to have an oscar at least (cause that's what he deserves) and I want him to open the door to other unconventionly looking actors with great talent!!!
P.s. this probably has a lot of spelling mistakes! It's 3h45, I have insomnia and English is not my first language! Sorray!
I noticed that a lot of artists “fix” Adam Driver’s nose when drawing him as Kylo Ren.
But I love his crooked nose! I really do!
It’s like Ewan Mcgregor’s moles. They’re supposed to be physical defects, but they make them even more charming and unique!

In today's episode, Denise and Lee discuss why REYLO IS ENDGAME for the Sequel Trilogy - obvi.
We start off by discussing JJ’s very revealing pre-TFA interviews:
French Metro (2013)
Wired (2013)
Breaking news: the young man in this story is BEN SOLO, and the young woman is REY.
In our pit stop by film analysis 101, we go through TFA’s biggest hits - REYLO IS CANON edition:
The first Reylo sex scene aka the interrogation. Intense eye contact, heavy breathing, panting, gasping and a heartbeat in the background - oh my! We contend that the interrogation scene is coded with sexual undertones for the adult audience to pick up on, whereas younger viewers and the characters themselves remain oblivious. The best part of that scene? The interactions between Zero-f*cks-to-give!Rey and Scared-and-aroused!Kylo Ren, which subvert all the known tropes. GTFO with your damsel in distress.
Our favorite part of that scene is that Kylo Ren is NOT resentful of Rey for besting him - he admires her all the more for her power AND feels compassion for her vulnerability. 😍
Next we discuss why Kylo Ren’s show-stopping hair moments in TFA are profoundly significant.
Denise discusses how Rey bypassed the compressor - to Ben Solo’s heart.
We review the second Reylo sex scene in TFA: the snow fight on the edge of the cliff, the locked sabers, the sweating, trembling and intense gazes - she can almost get there, but she can’t do it on her own. She needs him to push her there and then he does, and it’s amaaaazing.
Lee geeks out on character design and how Reylo compares with couples in other Star Wars romances.
The Reylo fairytale in TFA begins with one question: WHAT GIRL? And it’s a story that’s still being written even now. Stay tuned for the thrilling conclusion in IX!
Quote of the day:
“I’ve never seen a movie where a man and a woman lock swords and stare into each other’s eyes like that and then don’t do something later.”
-Denise
Lee’s rant of the day:
“Rey is a trash picker and some people say Kylo Ren is trash - it’s a match made in heaven, haters! Her livelihood depends on discerning whether something is straight up garbage or just something broken that can be mended; something that is still of great value and worth hanging onto - Ben Solo is that, made a person.”
I guess haters can suck on that to get them through these Reylo times we live in. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Today’s featured artist is the lovely and talented @ksart-things!
You can listen to the audio version of our episode on Soundcloud. Stay tuned for more Reylo receipts; the next part of our discussion covers TLJ and beyond.

In today’s episode we discuss the second TLJ behind the scenes reel. We know we’re not the only ones who weren’t impressed by its total lack of Kylo Ren awesomeness.
The Kylo-lessness of the BTS2 reel made for some salt-fueled speculation in today’s installment:
What could Luke have said to Rey that would make her angry enough to beat him with her stick?
Was it an ill-timed yo mama diss something pertaining to her family/origins? Could it have something to do with one nefarious nephew? 🤔
Are the scenes below all connected?
Does it mean that RUKE is confirmed Luke is withholding Force knowledge from Rey, making her resentment towards him all the greater? (Spoiler alert: probably, duh.)
If so, Luke is a hot mess of a teacher. Luckily we know someone who is available to tutor Rey.
A question for Poe:
We speculate as to what would earn Poe Dameron 27 slaps.
We share thoughts on the “ReyPoe confirmed” talk that popped up after a screenshot of the actors laughing between takes made the rounds.
In other news, haters be hatin’: Lee and Willow make no secret of the fact that they don’t care for ReyPoe one bit - but since they are not ding dongs, they ship and let ship. You hear that, Anne?
Meanwhile, LF must have sensed a disturbance in the Force, because they have since released an amaaaazing and incredible behind the scenes training featurette in which Adam Driver actually speaks. 🙌
Still no scenes of Kylo and Rey together, though we keep hearing their raw powah, oh so thin boundaries and powerful connection are at the heart of the movie. Now what can that mean??
Today’s episode features art by the lovely and talented @ksart-things 😍😍😍

In today’s episode we look at the official TLJ poster and break down the visual language conveyed by the characters’ arrangement, sizing, and positioning.
We compare Luke’s positioning to other giant heads featured in previous Star Wars posters. We look at Rey’s fierce “NOBODY BETTER TOUCH HIM” stance-
-that comes across as protective of Kylo, as if guarding his back. We compare that to Kylo Ren’s more vulnerable and exposed body language.
We feel their dynamic in the poster is a callback to the refreshing upending of the damsel in distress trope and role reversal that Rey and Kylo Ren have exhibited from their TFA days, with Rey so clearly dominating Kylo Ren in their second and third interaction - we suspect he may be into that.
We love that the new poster features front and center the continued yin and yang and two-halves-of-a-whole themes that have overtly accompanied the mention of Rey and Kylo Ren in marketing materials as we near the release of TLJ.
We dragged the marketing earlier this year, but are now more and more impressed by the consistency of the message being conveyed across all platforms.
We make brief mention of the Reylo barbies, his and hers Reylo perfume, and Rey and Kylo’s clothes together on the floor - an obvious nod to the fact that they are clearly not going to do any sexual things together because Rey is Kylo’s reincarnated grandfather and they are twins. Or cousins. Or maybe Targaryens? Help?
In a potentially spoilerific and tin-foiley part of the conversation we do an awesomely bad job of explaining the brilliant Harbinger of Death theory by fellow Reylo-friendly podcast @knightsofrant.
Lastly, we talk Force mysticism, Jedi folly, Sith excess and how the Sequel Trilogy may bring it all full circle to reach balance as Rey and Kylo Ren unite. In like a totally non-sexual way. Maybe. u_u
Today’s episode is short and sweet, and includes editing by our newest member, Ellie. In our video you’ll find artwork by two of our favorite artists, @ksart-things and @theforces-of-destiny. Check out their blogs for more fab Reylo fanart and other cool things.
