Kristin Husøy is good, but the whole “somebody pray for me” thing is just really not my cup of tea, and that’s basically the only lyric.

I don’t want to make more video posts, so here are some more honourable mentions for my national finals 2020 the ones that got away list:
Only Dream - Inger (Estonia) (very cute song)
Beautiful Lie - Jaagup Tusik (Estonia)
I’m Sorry, I Messed Up - Uudo Seep (Estonia) (very relatable)
Rainbow - Kim Rysstad (Norway) (feels a bit old school eurovision, but I personally like that. also, it kinda reminds me of Estonia this year)
Pray For Me - Kristin Husøy (Norway) (I was praying that Ulrikke would win, but this was a very nice second place)
Over the Sea - Magnus Bokn (Norway) (cute! the line: ‘will we ever figure out where we belong?’ really hits a spot in my heart)
Mais real que o amor - Tomás Luzia (Portugal) (Elisa was my fave even before the shows because I love her song, but I also had Tomás already saved on Spotify. it reminds me a lot of the old 2000s songs and yes, I already said that, but: I like the old vibes)
Kolači - Marko Marković (Serbia) (I am still convinced that Beovizija was rigged even before the shows. the PR teams and everyone in the media was very obvious and after seeing everyone’s performances, I was very sure that they were trying very hard to make everything else bad. yes, I don’t trust RTS. anyway, I liked this. it wasn’t my fave, but catchy and fun)
Nobody - Klara Hammarström (Sweden) (a bop. Meghan Trainor-ish but better imo)
Bulletproof - Dotter (Sweden) (yeah, this would have been amazing. we had very cool second places this year, which is also kinda sad...)

Made in Norway
Tumblr media
Norway generally have had a one show national final. This year is different. To celebrate their 60th year of MGP, they have gone with a five city semi final and a Grand final format. The semi finals have for songs and three duels per evening to determine who survives to sing once again to join five pre-qualified entries. And as of Saturday evening, there are now 10 entries.
I’ve heard some of them and then I stopped listening each week. I was a bit disappointed at the quality of some of the songs. A few of them were very kitsch and I wasn’t having a nice time listening to them. Maybe it was a Norwegian thing? I don’t know.
Semi final winners:
Raylee with “Wild” Impressive performance on the whole. I’m not a fan of the song really. It was weirdly like a light Reggae song and it doesn’t say Norway to me.
Rein Alexander with “One Last Time” An imposing gentleman and his crew of scary Vikings came forth here in an attempt to look manly and tough. I didn’t really feel it. It started well, but it lost it’s way.
Kristin Husøy with “Pray for Me” Week three was won by Kristin and for me, the best song from the three semi finals as well. It has a cool vibe, she’s wearing her power suit and I like the beat.
Magnus Bokn with “Over the Sea” It begins sounding like something else (Finland 2000), but then it becomes a much more complete and powerful song with good meaning, good vocals, good staging and a decent presence. It could do well.
Liza Vassilieva with “I Am Gay” She doesn’t mean happy either. It’s clique and obvious where it’s going and it will be played a lot across the summer. Liza doesn’t have a voice to her, but it’s fun and light.
The Pre-qualified
Sondrey “Take My Time” This performance reminds me of something I’ve seen from Sweden twice. But don’t let that distract you from what is a decent song with very sharp choreography that is quite eye catching.
Didrik & Emil with “Out of Air” I like the brothers; they are charismatic and they have fine voices. But this song is not a winner. It’s okay, but I didn’t like the gimmick of the brotherhood crap.
Akuvi with “Som du er” This one is a posse of empowered females who will rip you a new one if you look at them the wrong way. The choreography is very slick, polished and precise. But there is a problem, and that is she doesn’t have a voice. At all.
Ulrikke Brandstorp with “Attention” It reminds me of last year’s Austrian entry, but they amped it considerably. Ulrikke has a great voice of contrasts and the music takes you on a ride.
Tone Damli with “Hurts Sometimes”. Tone came to win and she presented her song in a very different way to all of the above entries who are filled with choreography, dance.and movement. Her presentation was simple and pure, but also a bit contrived.
Conclusion
In my humble opinion, the winner should be either Kristin Husøy or Magnus Bokn from the semi finalist or Ulrikke or Tone for the pre-qualifiers. I’m not sure what Norway will choose. My gut says Tone.; my heart says Kristin

Ulrikke klarte det!
Stemmerkrise, men favoritten innfridde!
Tumblr media
Bilde: Dagbladet

Here’s my ranking of the Melodi Grand Prix finalists:
Kristin Husøy – Pray For Me
Ulrikke Brandstorp – Attention
Sondrey – Take My Time
Didrik & Emil – Out of Air
Tone Damli – Hurts Sometimes
Rein Alexander – One Last Time
Akuvi – Som du er
Magnus Bokn – Over the Sea
Liza Vassilieva – I Am Gay
Raylee – Wild
Back at the start of January I mentioned that I didn’t really like the first semi final songs so I’d hold off ranking them until the final, but I did still listen to the semi songs as they were released. My obvious winner out of all of MGP was Pang, and it’s such a shame it was left in the semis (especially being beaten by Nordic Tenors???). It has the contrast of soft moments with dramatic ones like Attention, but that darker sound makes it so much more interesting to me, whereas I feel Attention is just another ballad, albeit a good one. I’d be very happy for Attention to get the ticket to Rotterdam. In the semis, only one of my personal winners actually qualified, and that was Pray for Me. I love the sound here, it’s somewhere between Stones by ZiBBS and Rag‘n’Bone Man’s Human. It’s easily my favourite song of the qualifiers, so I really hope it can surprise and take the victory, but I’m not expecting it to. Norway’s selection also stands out for having songs that I really dislike, as opposed to songs that I just don’t care for or aren’t that good. I Am Gay would be a pretty mediocre trashy song even sung by a gay person, and while I appreciate allies, she should never have even considered singing this herself if she couldn’t find a gay person to sing it. The cliche lyrics and generic dated beat tell the story that being gay ends at being gay, while actually existing as LGBT+ is so much more than that. I can understand why someone gay might enjoy belting along to it drunk at a club somewhere, there’s a place for songs like these, but they need to come from within the community, not outside it. Wild is the other song with a lot of hype, and oh boy, it is not for me. There are a lot of elements of songs that I don’t really like no matter how they’re used, though exceptions exist. That synthesized brassy bass sound sounds like nails on a chalkboard to me, it’s rare that I enjoy a song with it, and I also have a thing against key changes for the sake of a key change - a key change has to be built up to, you can’t shove one in there in an attempt to make your song dynamic, it just sounds really off to me. There’s also a lot of vocal hooks that I just don’t enjoy. I understand why this has its fans, but this is just not my genre at all. I thought that MGP wasn’t gonna be great after those first semi songs, and I was partly proved wrong, there’s a couple of good songs here and some more good ones overlooked in the semis, but there was also a lot of mediocrity and weird choices to sift through, even in the final, so overall I’d call this a pretty average selection. Attention would be a really great pick for Norway, it’s probably the strongest song here, but they do have other options in the final.

Kristin Husøy – Pray For Me [Soul, Deep House, Future House]

33. POLAND
Alicja Szemplinska - “Empires”
youtube
Sigh, we’ve entered *that* portion of the ranking where the songs are mostly slogs we have trudge through, as opposed to actually interesting, complex songs. Well, then...
Song Analysis
So yeah, today we complete out wonderful, exciting triad of Fall from the sky / Looking back / Empires. Three ballads in the second semifinal. Three songs that in my opinion have no discernible or even vaguely interesting traits and probably would’ve bombed in Eurovision proper.
What can I even write about “Empires” what isn’t already abundantly obvious to any of you? It’s a lowest common denominator bond song, a paint-by-numbers power ballad that at no points grabs or maintains interest. Alecja is a living breathing blank canvas, brought in solely to provide a voice for her insipid song.
I also find it highkey offensive that Alecja and the team behind “Empires” insist that their song had a  “Socially” “””””Relevant””””” message. Alecja, your song was fucking WRITTEN BY -who fucking else- little miss LAURELL FUCKING BARKER.
Laurell Barker, who constantly thrives off the intellectual capital of more talented musicians, such as Corinne and Stefan Gfeller? Laurell Barker, who is only capable of producing ‘quality’ by xerox’ing more popular entrants, such as “Fuego”?  Laurell Barker whose lyrical trademarks are blatantly splicing African American Vernacular English into songs performed by white people, to create an illusion of sass, such as “Wild” (and this will be the *ONLY* reference to Failee in the entire ranking, girl you lost a televote to Kristin Husøy)  Laurell Barker, who loves combining words not based on their meaning, but based on their phonetic proximity, because it sounds cool to ESL listeners, which we see in “Empires” in fact!!!  (”like moths to a flame, like birds to a pane... of... glass???”  ¿que?) Laurell Barker, who introduced the world to the horror of Małgorzata Jamroży (WHAT has Margaret been up to, even? I cannot wait for her to show up in Melfest 2021, as Dolly Style’s new Holly)
Wokeness my ass.  Don’t insult my intelligence.
NF Corner
Poland sought to copy their JESC successes by using their JESC selection format to select their ESC entrants as well. Except, they completely forgot to add in good songs? or tell their contestants it was an NF in the first place?
Lake Malawi - “Lucy”
youtube
Such a blatant B-side filler album track lmfao <3 Apparently, Albert had no clue he had enrolled himself into a functioning eurovision NF, which is hysterical given that he almost won (and would have won if he hadn’t expessedly told the Polish press he DIDN’T want to win <3). Imagine if “Lucy” had won tho. The trio that represented Czech last year returning for Poland with a song about their 2019 ESC experience, a song named after one of the 2019 host, via *accidentally* winning the NF they mistakenly believed to be a talent show. This is legit one of the silliest sentences I’ve ever typed out on this blog and we were *this* close to it coming to fruition. WHAT IS THIS FREAKY FRIDAY YEAR????
Eurovision 2020 vs Eurovision 2021
“Empires” would’ve NQ’d for aforementioned reasons, yeah? forgettable ballad not many people liked, drawn into the first half of a semi filled with similarly tepid lowtempo humdrum. Things weren’t looking too hot for Alecja.
However, redemption is on its way, because I do believe TVP will just select her again for 2021 (In fact, OGAE Poland already said they will, so what are TVP even waiting for? It’s common knowledge Alecja will return, just... announce her?)
Hopefully with a better song, tho. 🙄 Can someone give her Pierre Dumoulin’s phone number? I’m sure he has a few demo’s she can work with...
Tumblr media
FREAKY! FRIDAY! FACTOR!
If Lake Malawi had won this would have EASILY been a score of at least 4 senheads, but sadly the boring tepid ballad won and well... that ain’t exciting. I do live for the persistent rumours that Szansa was allegedly rigged FOR Alecja by her rich-ass dad, but let’s be honest she won because she was the best vocalist and because Albert muerde-me’d his own winning chances, and ain’t nothing Freaky! about that.
Score: 1 Senhit out of 5.
