Anyone else think comedians try to make themselves look less attractive, or maybe the industry makes them look less attractive? It’s something I’ve noticed with a few comedians, and I always found it interesting, considering everyone else in the world seems to be trying to make themselves more attractive. Maybe it has something to do with being known for comedy, rather than being known for appearance.

The most recent example I have is Charlie Day. Charlie Day keeps his facial hair and somewhat messy look even outside of IASIP. Other things like age and particular characters factor into these pictures; it makes sense for Charlie Kelly as a character to look unkempt. But I think there’s a noticeable, deliberate difference in how he presented before and after fame. And to be clear, I do think he’s just an attractive man in general, regardless of appearance, and, much more importantly, an incredibly talented actor and comedian. I don’t mean to be insulting or objectifying in any way, and I hope I’m not coming across that way. I’m genuinely wondering if there’s a reason in comedy for people to want to subdue their natural beauty. Other examples are some of the SNL cast, Bill Hader and Kristin Wiig in particular seem to enjoy elaborate, ridiculous costumes and makeup. And part of that is just for comedy, but at certain points it feels very purposeful.

I don’t know. Anyone else out there have any thoughts on this? Or is it just me?
