Though the ways of celebrating Holi have changed in recent years, the celebration of Holi in Kumaon continues to reflect the vibrant and rich local culture of Uttarakhand. Apart from the colours, it is the folk songs — many based on classical ragas — folk dances and customs which lend a special touch to this celebration of Holi.
Kumaoni Holi has its origin in the Kumaon division, but it is celebrated in different parts of the country by the natives of the Kumaon region who have kept their Holi traditions alive.
A 74-year-old senior citizen of Almora, Paan Singh Joshi informed The Pioneer that the celebrations of Kumaoni Holi do not just depict the victory of good over evil but more importantly, it marks the end of the winter and the beginning of the sowing season which has always been an important period for farmers. The Holi in Kumaoni tradition is celebrated in two prominent variations — Baithaki Holi and Khadi Holi. He said, “Baithaki Holi begins from Vasant Panchmi and ends on Dashmi of Phalgun month, while Khadi Holi commences from Ekadashi of Phalgun month and ends on Poornima. The day after Poornima is celebrated as the last day of Holi which is called Charradi. The men generally wear white kurta, pajama and topi and the women wear sarees during the celebrations.”
Joshi added, “Baithaki Holi, as the name suggests, is celebrated in a seated position by Holyars (people celebrating Holi) singing folk songs recounting the tales of Lord Krishna and how he celebrated Holi at Mathura with Radha and his friends and family. The subjects of the songs based on gods and goddesses like Shiva-Parvati, Ram-Sita and Hanuman are also sung by Holyars. Dhol, Huruk and Damau which are an indispensable part of the celebration are also played by them.”
In Khadi Holi, Holyars traditionally gather in a circle in a courtyard or an open area and sing folk songs and play traditional musical instruments like Dhol, Huruk and Damau and move together in sync dancing to the song, added Joshi. However, there is also a fixed pattern of singing these folk songs which adds to the charms of the celebration, said a Pithoragarh resident Richa Bisht.

Story Of Raktanchal Web series
It would not be wrong to say that Anurag Kashyap's 'Gangs of Wasseypur' in Bollywood has given audiences such a taste of crime drama films and series that one such series is coming in front of the audience. The story will bind you from the very first episode of 'Raktanchal'. Kranti Prakash Jha has played the role of Hero Vijay Singh in the web series. After films like 'MS Dhon: The Untold Story', 'Batla House' and TV series 'Swami Ramdev- Ek Sangharsh', Kranti Prakash has been overshadowed by his acting and dialogue delivery in 'Raktanchal'. Nikitan Dheer seems dangerous in the role of Villan Wasim Khan but he needs to work a lot on his facial expression and dialogue delivery.

Review of Raktanchal Web series
Apart from both the lead roles, Ravi Khanvilkar in the role of corrupt politician Pujari Singh and Vikram Kochhar in the character of Wasim Khan's goon freak are quite strong. Ronjini Chakraborty's character Seema and Krishna Bisht's character Katta arrive quite late but leave an impression. Pramod Pathak plays the role of Tripurari. Politician Saheb Singh's character could have been improved but in this role, the best actors like Daya Shankar Pandey have not been treated properly.
The story of 'Raktanchal' has been written by Rajat, Sarvesh Upadhyay and Shashank Rahi of Sanjeev. Director Ritam Srivastava has completely tied the atmosphere of the mid-80s in 'Raktanchal'. The politics of Hindu-Muslim and Ram temple in Uttar Pradesh in the late 80s has also been included. The story of 'Raktanchal' is good but the dialogues have been somewhat weak which only managed to leave a limited impact on the audience. In the story, the love story of Vijay Singh could be shown properly, which has been reduced to a few scenes. Both songs put in 'Raktanchal' brake the pace of the story, so even if they are not inserted, it does not matter. The story is finished at such a turn that the audience will wait for its second season.

Delhi Assembly election results: Analysing BJP’s lead margins - assembly elections
Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Vijender Gupta, the leader of the opposition in the outgoing Delhi assembly and one of the three leaders from the party who won the polls five years ago, was trailing by over 1,700 votes in the Rohini assembly segment, according to early trends on Tuesday.Jagdish Pradhan, another sitting legislator of the BJP, was leading by over 19,000 votes from Mustafabad assembly segment, trends showed at 11 am. In all, the BJP was leading in 15 of Delhi’s 70 seats at 11:30 am.Of the three assembly segments the BJP won in 2015, the party was trailing in Rohini and Vishwas Nagar while it was leading Mustafabad. The BJP’s candidate from Vishwas Nagar, OP Sharma, was trailing by 445 votes. In Rohini, it is a prestige fight for the BJP as the seat is considered its stronghold. The AAP’s Rajesh Nama Bansiwala, who is contesting the assembly elections for the first time, is giving a tough fight to Gupta. On the other hand, the split in Muslim votes appears to have gone in favour of the BJP in Mustafabad, according to early trends. In the polls, the BJP decided to field some strong local candidates such as three-time MLA SK Vats and four-time MLA Mohan Singh Bisht, who were leading from Shakur Basti and Karawal Nagar, respectively. There was a neck-and-neck contest in Shakur Basti, which is currently represented by PWD minister Satyendar Jain. Vats was leading by 51 votes. Bisht was leading by 6,253 votes. In the Krishna Nagar assembly segment, which has been represented by Union health minister Harsh Vardhan in the past, the BJP’s candidate Anil Goyal was leading by 3,595 votes. The BJP lost the constituency for the first time in 2015. Back then, the BJP’s chief ministerial candidate, former IPS officer Kiran Bedi, contested Krishna Nagar, but lost to the AAP’s SK Bagga by 2000-odd votes. Read the full article

Dream Girl Trailer: Ayushmann Khurrana’s film looks entertaining
Talking about the song, director Raaj Shaandilyaa said that as the film is based in Mathura, so that’s why the Radha-Krishna song is included. He said, “The movie demanded it. Ayushmann plays Sita and Draupadi, hence, as soon as we included Radha, it completed the cycle. The number comes at a very crucial juncture and takes the narrative forward. When we were deciding on it, I had briefed the music director duo — Meet Brothers — to give me a desi folk song that is also a dance number. When I saw Ayushmann as Radha, I was bowled over. When he had to dress up as Radha or Sita, he lost some weight and worked on the nuances to look feminine.”
Drem Girl marks the first collaboration of Ayushmann Khurrana and Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Motion Pictures.
The film also stars Annu Kapoor, Vijay Raaz, Abhishek Bannerjee, Manjot Singh, Nidhi Bisht, Rajesh Sharma, Raj Bhansali among others.
Directed by Raaj Shaandilyaa, the film is slated to hit the screens on 13th September 2019.

Manipur International Babyrojisana Chanu Lays Down The Gauntlet
Manipur’s Babyrojisana Chanu, who recently won gold for India in the seventh Nation’s Cup boxing tournament in Serbia, wasted little time in asserting her superiority over Harshita (Delhi) and forced the referee to stop the contest in the first round of their bout at the boxing hall in the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium on Monday.
It came as no surprise that Chanu was the clear winner in the girls’ 52kg class. Daughter of Robindro Naorem, she will face Assam’s Nanjita Baro in the quarterfinalstomorrow.
Another closely fought encounter saw Goa’s Suman Yadav inch past Arunachal Pradesh’s Dare Runchi with a 3-2 split decision. “My current coach came to our school to demonstrate the sport,” she said. “I tried out my hand at boxing as it looked appealing. One year has gone by since and I cannot imagine my life now without boxing”

Konsam Ormila Devi Lifting The Weight Of Expectation With A Touch Of Class
Konsam Ormila Devi from Manipur, who arrived with a big reputation, lived up to the expectations. She won the gold with a big margin in the girls’ 44kg category on Monday at the Indira Gandhi Stadium.
The Commonwealth Youth Championship winner lifted a combined total of 137 kg, four kilos better than 133kg she achieved at Gold Coast in the Commonwealth meet last September. On Monday, Ormila achieved 59 kg in snatch and 78 kg with clean & Jerk for a total of 137 kg.
Her coach, T Bobo Singh, hopes that with the kind of talent young Ormila is blessed with, she should be able to follow in the footsteps of the illustrious weightlifters from Manipur like Kunjurani Devi and Sanamacha Chanu.
This win at the Khelo India School Games could well be the first step in the long journey to medals at the highest levels.
Ormila, whose total was 10 kg better than silver medallist, Khushali Gangurde of Maharashtra (Total of 127 kg), revealed that she expected a much closer fight. “I thought she (Khushali) would give a fight, but she didn’t succeed in her last two attempts,” she said.
Hailing from Khongjom, a small village 35km outside of Manipur’s capital city of Imphal, Ormila has risen from humble beginnings. She picked up weightlifting at the insistence of coach Bobo Singh, a former coach at the Sports Authority of India academy in the state.
“Her mother is a vegetable vendor in Khongjom, and her father is very ill,” he said of his talented ward. “Her cousin used to play football. That is how I discovered her at the SAI academy, where I persuaded her to take up weightlifting.”
Singh credited her rapid rise through the ranks in such a short time span of to her hard work. “I spotted her in 2013, and it is great to see her having done so well in the past four years or so. I had told her to give me two years, and we have come a long way since then.”
Ormila, who also won gold in the Asian Youth Championship, is currently balancing studies, competitive weightlifting as well as attending to her ill father, but has her sights set on the National Youth championships later this month.
“I study in the ninth standard, and the school where I come from doesn’t have many facilities for sports, so I have to train at the academy,” she explains.
Her coach, now a physical education teacher, is devoting all the time he can towards his young ward in her journey to become a future international medal contender. “The national championships are coming up in Vishakhapatnam later this month, so we are focusing on that,” explains her coach. “Her selection for international competitions will depend on her performance there.”
