भगवान् ने जब छठे वर्ष की आयु में प्रवेश किया तब एक दिन भगवान् माता यशोदा से बोले – मैय्या अब हम बड़े हो गए हैं....

मैय्या यशोदा बोली – अच्छा लल्ला अब तुम बड़े हो गए हो तो बताओ अब क्या करें...

भगवान् ने कहा – अब हम बछड़े चराने नहीं जाएंगे, अब हम गाय चराएंगे...

मैय्या ने कहा – ठीक है बाबा से पूछ लेना” मैय्या के इतना कहते ही झट से भगवान् नन्द बाबा से पूछने पहुंच गए...

बाबा ने कहा – लाला अभी तुम बहुत छोटे हो अभी तुम बछड़े ही चराओ.. . .

भगवान् ने कहा – बाबा अब मैं बछड़े नहीं गाय ही चराऊंगा ...

जब भगवान नहीं माने तब बाबा बोले- ठीक है लाल तुम पंडित जी को बुला लाओ- वह गौ चारण का मुहूर्त देख कर बता देंगे...

बाबा की बात सुनकर भगवान् झट से पंडित जी के पास पहुंचे और बोले –पंडित जी, आपको बाबा ने बुलाया है, गौ चारण का मुहूर्त देखना है, आप आज ही का मुहूर्त बता देना मैं आपको बहुत सारा माखन दुंगा...

पंडित जी नन्द बाबा के पास पहुंचे और बार-बार पंचांग देख कर गणना करने लगे तब नन्द बाबा ने पूछा, पंडित जी क्या बात है ? आप बार-बार क्या गिन रहे हैं? पंडित जी बोले, क्या बताएं नन्दबाबा जी केवल आज का ही मुहूर्त निकल रहा है, इसके बाद तो एक वर्ष तक कोई मुहूर्त नहीं है.. पंडित जी की बात सुन कर नंदबाबा ने भगवान् को गौ चारण की स्वीकृति दे दी।

भगवान जो समय कोई कार्य करें वही शुभ-मुहूर्त बन जाता है। उसी दिन भगवान ने गौ चारण आरम्भ किया और वह शुभ तिथि थी कार्तिक मास में शुक्ल पक्ष अष्टमी, भगवान के गौ-चारण आरम्भ करने के कारण यह तिथि गोपाष्टमी कहलाई।

माता यशोदा ने अपने लल्ला के श्रृंगार किया और जैसे ही पैरो में जूतियां पहनाने लगी तो लल्ला ने मना कर दिया और बोले मैय्या यदि मेरी गौएं जूतियां नहीं पहनती तो में कैसे पहन सकता हूं। यदि पहना सकती हो तो उन स��ी को भी जूतियां पहना दो... और भगवान जब तक वृन्दावन में रहे, भगवान ने कभी पैरों में जूतियां नहीं पहनी। आगे-आगे गाय और उनके पीछे बांसुरी बजाते भगवान उनके पीछे बलराम और श्री कृष्ण के यश का गान करते हुए ग्वाल-गोपाल इस प्रकार से विहार करते हुए भगवान् ने उस वन में प्रवेश किया तब से भगवान् की गौ-चारण लीला का आरम्भ हुआ।

जब भगवान् गौएं चराते हुए वृन्दावन जाते तब उनके चरणों से वृन्दावन की भूमि अत्यन्त पावन हो जाती, वह वन गौओं के लिए हरी-भरी घास से युक्त एवं रंग-बिरंगे पुष्पों की खान बन गया था

In the early hours of the morning, a 15 year old girl trudged out to the living room, pillow in hand, before light had even broken out over the horizon. It was 4:00 a.m. but the room was charged with a fervent sort of energy, a giddiness that finaly peaked when Birendra Krishna Bhadra's sonorous voice rang out with the first words- "আশ্বিনের শারদপ্রাতে". 

It was মহালয়া- the beginning of 'দেবীপক্ষ'. I do not think that any words, except the ones privately spoken by each Bengali to Ma, of his wishes and woes, hopes and sorrows in silent prayers between the chants during Ashtami's Anjali, can convey the feeling in his heart as one by one, all the houses are filled with 'আগমনীর গান' while the sun slowly creeps into sight like a sleepy child unable to stay away from the excitement of all his aunts, uncles and older cousins huddled outside infront of the radio with tumblers full of steaming, milky tea.

There is a certain quiet beauty in the knowledge that every year since 1931 when the show first aired, Bengalis within Kolkata and without have been dutifully waking up at 4 o'clock to welome our Maa home. A five year old girl rubs her drowsy eyes infront of the radio as she hears the voice she will learn to eagerly wait for throughout the year when she grows older, for the first time. Lying propped up on the cushions in her hospital bed, much to the protest of her nurses, her great grandmother ruefully smiles when she realises that it would be her last time, and for a glorious hour and a half, the pain of the cancer in her liver bows down to মহিষাসুরমর্দিনী. A large joint family gathers in front of the antique record player, with endless cups of tea and aluminium tins of biscuits under the arches of their ancestral home in North Calcutta, where only a few days later, they would welcome their very own Ma Durga. In the servants' quarters, the 'rannar thakur' sits on the front steps of his tin roofed home with his thin daughter and thinner wife, and his stomach's grumbles of hunger are drowned out by the music carrying from the record player. A Muslim boy, not daring to tell his orthodox father, cycles to his Hindu classmate's house before the sun rises to catch the first strains of Aagomoni. For মহালয়া does not merely mark the coming of Ma, it marks the advent of hope in the form of our ten-armed Goddess for every Bengali, irrespective of his age, social standing or religion. Even if it may be just an old recording playing from some houses on the streets, to me and to any Bengali, it seems more like on one magical day every year, all the clouds in the sky strike up a wonderful heavenly orchestra of voices, filling all the empty spaces in the sky, till Ma Durga herself comes to fill up the place waiting for her on the mandaps and in our hearts.

The Month of Shravan and its Significance

Today is Shravana Krishna Ashtami, the eleventh day of Shravana masam (month). The month of Shravan is the fourth month in the Hindu calendar and falls in the western months of August and September. This month has a lot of spiritual significance and is considered auspicious for Hindus for many reasons.

Samudra Manthan

According to the Puranas (holy texts), it was during this month that the Devathas (Gods) and Asuras (demons) churned the ocean in search of amrit (nectar). Although the churning of the ocean gave them the amrit, it also gave them poison. Because the Devathas did not know what to do with the poison, they went to Lord Shiva for help. Lor Shiva swallowed the poison and stored it in his throat which for which he got the name, Neelkant (blue throat). This is why Shravana masam is important for the devotees of Lord Shiva.

Sola Somvaar Vrat

The Sola Somvaar Vrat is another reason why Shravana masam is important for the devotees of Lord Shiva. Those who want to do the Sola Somvaar Vrat (16 Mondays) usually start on the first Monday of Shravana masam and complete it on the last Monday Karthika masam. This vrat is mostly observed by unmarried women who want to be married to the man of their dreams. But married women can observe this vrat, too, for better health or fulfilment of their wishes. For this vrat, women fast all morning and afternoon and break it in the evening after doing pooja for Lord Shiva.

Mangala Gauri

The Mangala Gauri Vratham (pooja) is performed by married women for health, prosperity, and the long life of their husband. It is also performed for a happy married life. This vratham is only performed in Shravana masam on Tuesdays. After the pooja, a minimum of 5 married women are invited home for Haldi and Kumkum. The traditions for this pooja vary based on each family.

Varalakshmi Vratham

In South India, Varalakshmi Vratham (pooja) is performed by married women on the Friday before Poornima (full moon). Vara Maha Lakshmi or Varalakshmi is the Goddess of wealth and prosperity. Women perform this pooja every year for the blessings of the Goddess on them, their husband, and children.

Raksha Bandhan

Raksha Bandhan is day that is celebrated all across India to honor the pure bond between brother and sister. On the day of Raksha Bandhan, the sister ties a rakhi on her brother’s wrist, the brother presents her with a gift, and they both promise to protect each other no matter what the circumstances.

Krishna Janmashtami

Shravana Krishna Ashtami, according to the Puranas, is the day Lord Krishna was born. Other names for this day are Krishnashtami, Krishna Janmashtami, or Janmashtami. On this day, Hindu families decorate their home with rangoli and make food the Lord Krishna likes.
