THE KILLER (2024) de John Woo : Encore une fois, si vous permettez

Toute discussion à propos des meilleurs réalisateurs d’action du monde se doit d’inclure John Woo, qui a mis en scène plusieurs sommets du genre, dont bien sûr The Killer (1989). Il peut sembler sacrilège de produire un remake de ce qui est considéré comme un chef-d’œuvre par la plupart des observateurs, mais quand c’est Woo lui-même qui orchestre la « réinvention radicale » de son film, notre curiosité est attisée. Écrit par Brian Helgeland et Josh Campbell & Matt Stuecken, le scénario de The Killer (2024) remplace l’assassin Jeffrey par la tueuse à gages Zee (Nathalie Emmanuel) et transpose le récit de Hong Kong à Paris. À la suite d’une tuerie dans une boîte de nuit où la chanteuse américaine Jenn (Diana Silvers) perd la vue, Zee ressent le besoin de protéger cette dernière, en plus de lutter pour sa propre survie alors que se déploie une intrigue impliquant la disparition de 100 kilos d’héroïne, un prince saoudien (Saïd Taghmaoui), un caïd français (Éric Cantona) et son lieutenant (Sam Worthington), ainsi que des flics ripoux… Mais il y a au moins un policier honnête à Paris, l’inspecteur Sey (Omar Sy), que tout semble opposer à Zee, jusqu’à ce que ces deux adversaires réalisent qu’ils ont plusieurs trucs en commun et qu’ils unissent leurs forces. Cela s’apparente à la relation entre les personnages de Chow Yun-Fat et Danny Lee dans le film original, sauf qu’il y a ici un soupçon de comédie romantique dans les interactions entre les protagonistes. De même, The Killer (2024) adopte une approche plus ludique que son prédécesseur, autant au niveau du ton que du style visuel, qui inclut notamment un usage répété de split-screen et d’extrêmes gros plans. À travers les photogéniques décors parisiens, on a droit à une multitude de poursuites haletantes et de fusillades sanglantes, où l’on renoue avec plaisir avec le sens du chaos contrôlé de John Woo, qui sait exactement quand recourir aux ralentis pour accentuer l’intensité. Le tout culmine par un climax épique dans une église abandonnée, où volent les iconiques pigeons et colombes du cinéaste hongkongais au son de la musique aux accents morriconesques de Marco Beltrami.  Sans surprise, ce remake n’égale pas son inspiration, mais c’est néanmoins un très bon film d’action où Nathalie Emmanuel et Omar Sy sont à la fois charmants et badass.

at katahimikan lang ang bumalot sa pagitan nilang dalawa

sa isip isip ni jungwoo ay mas masakit parin ang nakita niya noong nakaraang araw.

-FLASHBACK-

"aamin ka na ba ngayon, woo?!" pagtatanong ni mark na bestfriend ni jungwoo.

at pagkatapos nga ng klase nila ay sinamahan na ni mark si jungwoo para pumunta sa quad upang kitain si jaehyun na tansya niya ay kakatapos lang ng praktis. ilang minuto rin ang nilinga linga sa lugar bago makita ang pamilyar na hubog ng binata.

doon niya nakita si jaehyun kasama si doyoung. ang matagal nang natitipuhan ni jaehyun simula pa lamang nung freshman sila. si doyoung ang palaging bukambibig ni jaehyun sa tuwing magkasama sila ni jungwoo.

sariwa pa rin sa utak ni jungwoo ang itsura ni jaehyun nung nakita niya na kasama nito si doyoung sa quad. napakalawak ng ngiti ng binata kasabay ang pag yakap nito kay doyoung, isa sa mga bagay na dapat sana ay hindi na lamang nakita ni jungwoo nung araw na iyon. sumabay pa ang buhos ng ulan sa nadarama ni jungwoo nung araw na iyon, tumakbo palabas ng campus si jungwoo at sinagasa ang ulan, walang payong ang binata at dire-diretso itong tumakbo papalayo sa lugar kung saan ayaw niya makakita o makaramdam ng sakit.

patuloy pa rin sa pagtakbo ang binata, tagong tago ang mga luha nito dahil sa mga patak ng ulan sa kanyang mga pisngi, walang makakakita sa pagpatak ng bawat luha niya, walang makakaalam, mabuti nang wala.

tumigil si jungwoo sa may tapat ng isang kapehan, sumilong muna siya saglit at umupo sa may harap ng coffee shop na nakita niya. malayo sa kanila. malayo sa lahat. mabuti nalang at nakita at nahanap agad siya ni mark. yakap na lamang ang nabigay ni jungwoo sa kaibigan at doon niya ibinuhos ang lahat. lahat ng sakit na naramdaman niya nang makita niya ang lalaking minahal niya sa loob ng apat na taon na masaya sa piling ng iba.

"gusto mo bang pumasok muna? o diretso na tayo sa may condo mo?" pagtatanong ni mark sa kaibigan habang hinahaplos ang likod nito upang patahanin.

at dun napagpasyahan na ihatid nalang muna ni mark si jungwoo sa condo nito, dahil sa nababad sa ulan si jungwoo ay nagkasakit ito, ilang araw rin itong hindi nakapasok dahil sa lagnat at ubo pati na rin sipon. sa loob ng ilang araw na iyon ay hindi niya sinabihan si jaehyun kung ano ang nangyari sakanya, ayaw niya muna makausap si jaehyun dahil masakit pa rin para sakanya. nasa condo lamang siya nagpapahinga, madalas ay binibisita siya ni mark para naman kamustahin at alagaan na rin.

"bakit ka nga pala nawala ng lang linggo nung nakaraan?" pagbabasag ng katahimikan ni jaehyun sa pagitan nilang dalawa.

"wala, may inasikaso lang"

"wag kang magsinungaling woo, alam ko may ibang dahilan yan"

"ano pa ba gusto mo idahilan ko, jaehyun?!" "gusto ko malaman ang totoong dahilan dahil hindi ka naman basta basta mawawala nang ganun lang, hindi ka rin nagsabi sa akin sa loob ng ilang linggo na yun, ni isang chat o text miski tawag, wala.

"it's not like i'm your boyfriend na dapat updated ka palagi, i just had to do something important, ayun na yun! if that's not enough to convince you then it's not my problem anymore"

at this point nagtataasan na ng boses ang dalawa. ayaw na ayaw pa naman ni jungwoo na tinataasan siya ng boses dahil naiiyak siya sa tuwing may gumagawa nito sakanya.

"oo nga pala, bestfriend lang pala ako" bulong nito sa sarili.

hindi na rin napigilan ni jungwoo na mangilid ang mga luha sa kanyang mga mata. ilang minuto pa ay iniangat ni jaehyun ang kanyang ulo at tinignan si jungwoo. nakita nito ang nangingilid na luha ng binata, nakatingin sa malayo si jungwoo.

"woo, okay ka lang ba?" "hindi ko naman sinasadya na pagtaasan ka ng boses"

tumayo si jaehyun sa pagkakaluhod nito kanina, iniangat niya ang baba ng binata gamit ang kanyang kamay upang ipaharap ito sa gawi niya at agad na pinunasan ang mga luha na nangingilid sa mata ni jungwoo.
