now that I finally beat both PlayStation Console Klonoa games, I can finally discuss my VISCERAL HATRED FOR THE PHANTASY REVRIE KLONOA 2 REMAKE!!!
On a visual level.
Door to Phantomile also has issues but those all stem from this just being a PS1 Artsyle mod added to the weird Wii code and the lack of it's Extras.
Klonoa 2 however was ruined
Tumblr media
First the opening cutscene. How tf do you make a mistake like this? Something as basic as silhouette??? For mystery???
(TOP:PS2 BOTTOM:Remake)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next the erasure of Klonoa's fangs (Top Remake, Bottom PS2 OG)
Sonic had the same issue from 2003-2009 with everyone's fangs being cropped off (especially Shadow now) but it bugs me even more with Klonoa.
Why are cute mammal characters not allowed to be cute mammals anymore???
Moreover, generally others
Tumblr media
Poor expressioning (no anger 4u)
Klonoa also dosen't smile when being shot out of a Canon anymore but I Don't feel like getting a screenshot for it. The point is this remake upsets me. Everything has too much bloom and is too soft
Tumblr media
Phantasy Reverie on Left, Original on right
I still want Klonoa 3 tho. They might be allergic to early 2000's edges and gloominess but they could hande a new direction that dosen't suck.
Tumblr media
Now gimme the game, Bandai!!! And japanese american developers, get over your fear of fangs

A post about North American sales data for Klonoa 1 & 2
I can't really think of an introduction, so here are the key points of the full post for convenience's sake:
The NPD Group (now one half of Circana) has tracked video game sales in North America since 1995 - initially(?) integrating it into their Toy Research Survey Tracking (TRST) system, which tracked sales reported by 17 different retails comprising 63% of the North American market. It's not a perfect system by any means, but it's something, at least.
While the organization discouraged publishing the raw data, a random, long-dead website seems to have done just that for the months of December 2002 and January 2003.
According to the latter spreadsheet, by January 2003, Klonoa: Door to Phantomile and Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil had respectively sold 25,861 and 97,766 copies in their retail lifespans at that point. (I'm not entirely sure whether this is specifically for the US or North America more broadly.)
More details after the jump.
To set the scene, this excerpt from the April 1997 issue of Next Generation magazine provides a good explanation of how the TRST system works, including the potential pitfalls in its methodology:
Tumblr media
Also worth noting is that Walmart stopped providing sales figures to TRST starting in July 2001, the same month Lunatea's Veil released in the US. (Toys R Us would follow suit in the middle of August 2003, though this is not especially relevant here.) This, naturally, is a fairly significant blind spot in the data - by February 2012, when Walmart resumed providing numbers to the NPD Group, an analyst estimated the chain was responsible for 25-30% of video game sales in the US, and I have no reason to believe they weren't pulling similar numbers in the early 2000s.
Now, one may wonder how the public would've been able to get their hands on sales numbers that the Group insisted on keeping private. In this case, the answer is a random, long-defunct website republishing two spreadsheets claiming to have TRST data for video games sold in December 2002 and January 2003. I can't verify the accuracy of these web pages myself, but given their age I suspect it'd be difficult to decisively prove it either way. Plus, aside from some simple yet odd date typos in the 2003 spreadsheet, from what I've read they seem official and plausible - not to mention reasonably comprehensive.
With all that buildup out of the way, here are what I believe may be some of (if not the only) publicly-accessible sales figures for Door to Phantomile and Lunatea's Veil in North America (or at least the US).
Tumblr media
The original spreadsheet for December 2002 puts Door to Phantomile quite a ways down, since it hadn't sold any copies that month. Nevertheless, it does give us a figure for the copies it'd sold in its lifetime (beginning with its release in March 1998): 25,851.
Tumblr media
Lunatea's Veil, a relatively current release, fares better. Between July 2001 and December 2002, TRST's data says it sold 97,220 copies, with 1,138 being sold that month alone. The numbers on the right (rounded to two decimal places) indicate that, for the month of December 2002, it was sold for an average of $28.18 and brought in a total of $32,066.35.
Tumblr media
Now we progress to January 2003. Unsurprisingly, Door to Phantomile did not sell any additional copies that month, remaining exactly as it was.
Tumblr media
Lunatea's Veil sold 546 more copies, however, bringing its total sales up to 97,766. As before, the two rightmost columns track its average price ($19.81) and the total amount of money it brought in ($10,814.42), both specifically for January 2003. However, the two asterisks next to the latter number indicate that it may be inaccurate, so please take it with a larger grain of salt than the rest of the data.
I must admit I don't really have a conclusion here, outside of the obvious ways to interpret this data (the first game sold poorly, the second one did better but not exceptionally). If you have anything to add, please feel free to!

"When the Meloetta Sings..." (PMD Script)
What does Klonoa and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon have in common? Teary farewells, when all is said and done... If you dare have the sorrows combine, then bravely venture into the "keep reading" and see the overall script for a future practice idea and "break" piece.
Synopsis:
It’s time once again for the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon staple: the humans must return to home, despite the sorrow involved. It’s no different for the now-shiny-eevee, Cio, and the now-riolu, Claire. Just as the ending of Klonoa: Door to Phantomile played out: Claire nor Cio want to go to their respective homes and separate, all while Melody sings the mythical “Song of Restoration,” to undo the damage all the Ultra Beasts caused. Claire will be sent back alongside Solgaleo, Cio alongside Lunala, through an Ultra Space wormhole that’ll return them to their own realms. Nearby, the other pokemon they’ve befriended will stand by, not enjoying the show, but knowing it’s necessary to maintain the realm’s balance: rejecting all those who did not belong.
Script:
Cio: So, what now, Gray? With all the Ultra Beasts and those two going back home, what should Claire and I do? I think we’re ready to go out and finally be our own rescue organization, right, man?
**The shiny Thievul says nothing, but has a grim look on his face.**
Cio: ?... Gray…?
*Claire also seems concerned*
Grayson: … No, what happens next is… *he sighs* You both return to your actual homes…
*The riolu and eevee look at each other.*
Cio: Gray, what’re you talking about, man: you still want us to stay at the base…? *he realizes something is wrong* Hey man, what’s wrong?
Grayson: … Now that Melody will undo everything, It’s time you both knew the truth: you’re not actually pokemon of this world. You’re not even pokemon, in general…
*Claire and Cio look uneasy: Claire’s doing her signature “paws-up” pose, while Cio is sweating*
Cio: You’re not making sense, man… What’s going on?
Grayson: I’m sharing the truth, that’s what. You’re humans: creatures similar to our kind, but more adept to ingenuity and other skills that rely on intellect over powers.
Cio: “Humans”...? Like those “alien life forms” Gustel always talked about, like all the other “alternate world” stuff?
Claire: !!... (I think I remember Gustel’s research about those kinda things, too…! He said that in some worlds, there exist things that don’t in ours… He even said there could exist some worlds, where even pokemon aren’t real…)
Grayson: You two only came here, by chance, just as that “lunala” and “solgaleo” did. I’m assuming the wormholes which brought you here altered your forms, somehow, as it likely wouldn’t have been possible to enter here otherwise. Now, it’s time for you to leave through those very portals and return to the worlds you rightfully belong in.
Cio: This… This’s some kind of joke, right? Grayson, I remember everything: growing up here, how you inspired me to start my own rescue team organization…! How can I have memories like that, if I wasn’t here my entire life?!
Claire: (I-I remember stuff, too…! All the training with Raifu, painting with Skyler and learning to use special attacks…)
Cio: Come on, man, I dunno what you’re doing, but it’s not funny…!
Grayson: Cio, for the time you’ve known me-- as short as it may have actually been --do you really know me to be someone for such a troubling and discomforting “joke”: to admit to you… *he pauses and grimaces* that it was all a lie? Your memories are false fabrications, planted into you two, so you’d stay with us and for other important reasons. The last thing we needed were more alien life forms roaming around, unsupervised, despite how much of a paler threat you’d be…
Cio: So, you… You were never really trying to just “keep us safe”...? Th-That “overprotective brother” stuff…?
Grayson: Well, in a sense we had: it wouldn’t exactly be safe for yourselves, if you were allowed to roam freely in unfamiliar terrain.
Claire: … (But… But… Does that mean they never really cared about us…? W-What if they only “cared” ‘cause we could’ve caused trouble…?)
Cio: S-So what, man: we’ve just secretly been prisoners this whole time?! Y-You even got s-some free labor o-o-out of us!!
Grayson: Please, it was for your own good…
*Show everyone coming across the fallen Claire and Cio, as Lunatala and Solgaleo more consciously flee the wormholes.*
… Do you have any idea how terrifying it’d be: living with the knowledge you’re stuck in a world that you don’t belong to, unaware if you’ll ever again see the family and life you were stolen from?
*Show the soon-named Hypno over the two, familiarizing himself with the once-humans’ memories and altering them*
… It was far crueler to leave your minds untouched, than have Trance assist us in planting new memories and altering your sense of reality.
*Return to the present scene*
Cio: … Y-You’re lying, man… I dunno why, but you’re lying! You’ve gotta be!!
Claire: … (It’s gotta be true… Grayson would never say something that’s mean, like scaring us about everything being fake… So, it must’ve all been fake…)
*Claire starts crying*
Cio: H-Hey, Buddy…! *he places a paw on her arm* C’mon, man, i-it’s not real, h-he’s just saying stuff…!!
Grayson: Cio, Claire, you’d best prepare yourselves… Melody’s about to sing.
*The Meloetta takes her position on the cliff’s edge, vocalizing the proper notes that open all the wormholes, which absorb their respective Ultra Beast. Soon enough, Claire and Cio notice theirs opening, when their bodies suddenly react to a strong gust sucking them away. Lunala and Solgaleo leave more willingly.*
Cio: No, NO…! I’M NOT GOING ANYWHERE!!
Claire: !!! (At least let me and Cio stay together!!! HE’S MY BEST FRIEND!!)
*The two take paws, gripping on for dear life, as the selective gusts threaten to finally pull the “floating” duo apart. They give each other one final look in the eyes, until they can hold on no longer and fly into their respective wormholes.*
Cio: CLAIRE…!!
Claire: C’O…!!
*The wormholes then disappear and Melody concludes her song. A final glimpse is of Grayson, as he wipes his eyes, before re-applying his shades.*

Alright, Direct thoughts time I guess. I'm not gonna be all flowery and happy because I honestly wasn't that impressed so if you don't wanna read the mean ol spoiled nintendo fans thoughts then keep scrolling.
I care not for Fire Emblem. I also care not fore Advance Wars but I'm still happy to see that this game is coming, I don't want it, but any time Nintendo ressurects an old IP is fine with me. Also the character designs are fun.
I care not for Mario sports spinoffs, but I do think we were overdue for a new Strikers game. I don't want it, but I admit they fill a role, and I do appreciate the more unique rough and edgy style of the striker games, and of course Next Level is bringing their usual brand of extra expressiveness to the Mario crew that Nintendo isn't as good at doing themselves... I do worry that this may be a little more sanitized compared to older strikers games.
I'm just not feeling Splatoon 3. I loved the first Splatoon. I had an okay time with the second one but it felt like more of the same... and this third one so far just looks like even more of the same than before... I guess we'll have to wait and see more of the single player campaign.
Kirby is horrifying now I see.
I guess Chrono Cross rumors were true. I don't feel a storng urgency to play that game, I like Chrono Trigger just fine but I am not one of those people that would put it in my top 10 or even top 50, and I hear the sequel isn't that good. Maybe if it's cheap I'll check it out.
I've been curious about Klonoa forever so i'll check that out if the price is right.
LIVE A LIVE is a genuine suprise. That game has been on my backlog forever. I'm actually not a huge fan of the 3D HD stuff though so I think I may stick with the fan translated SNES version unless they include the original with the remake ( something I feel every remake should be doing. )
Already said my piece about the Kingdom Hearts releases. If you don't have a playstation, pirate it. DO. NOT. SUPPORT. CLOUD. GAMING. It's fucking stupid.
I was excited to see new stuff for Metroid but it all turned out to be difficulty options that should have been in the base game and a boss rush, which also should have been in the base game. Can't complain too much when it's a free update, but I really wish these things didn't have to be added later. Not everyone has guaranteed ongoing internet access.
The EarthBound re-releases.... sigh... I'm just tired of Nintendo and their fans feeling like they deserve a pat on the back for doing things that they've already done before, and should just be an expected thing that they should always do, and doing it a few years later than they should. Earthbound releases are not a huge deal anymore. None of Nintendo's retro releases are and they really shouldn't be praised for the way they handle their retro games, especially since they used to do a much better job at it, but failed to make sure it carried forward to current generations.
Switch Sports is also a genuine suprise. I thought that series would have died with the wii. Is the same audience for those games even on the switch? I know Switch has outsold the Wii at this point but that's largeley due to it being a handheld and not a great console to share with other ppl. I don't exactly see Granny Ethel playing tennis at the retirement home with a Joycon. Still, I liked Wii sports. If I can get it for a bargain bin price, maybe i'd pick it up.
I forgot that I bought portal on Steam ages ago and never played it... oops. I really should give it a go, it's one of those instant classics, yes?
Mario Kart's DLC is pretty cool. Mario Kart 8 really is going to be the best Mario Kart game at this rate, huh? The Switch version already had more tracks than any other Mario Kart game before it thanks to the DLC from the Wii U version being bundled in. And they only want a quarter of the game's price to double the number of tracks? This is way better than a new Mario Kart game imo.
If I didn't mention an announcement, it means I have no thoughts about it.

Another devlog! This time featuring a sampling of baddies from the game. There will be only a small amount of enemies (7 normal ones, 1 boss) but each has its own unique role to play - even the Undead Moo, which is as basic as they get, can at least choose between “attack” and “multi-attack.” The Crusader Acolyte is another physical attacker who does less damage up front, but lasts much longer. And the Sobbing Acolyte has powerful support spells and self-destructive attacks in order to help, hurt, and just generally be a thorn in your side. (Or rather, crown.)
I will admit that these guys aren’t exactly *the most consistent* with the Klonoa series’ art direction (which this is ostensibly a fangame of), but you can only worry about such things so much when your deadline is a mere two months away, eh?
Until then, however, see y’all next week!

15 Underrated Game Boy Advance Games
https://ift.tt/3vFzwrI
When the Game Boy Advance hit shelves in Japan on March 21, 2001, Nintendo was still riding the incredible success of the original Game Boy. After more than a decade of the Game Boy’s handheld dominance, though, gamers eagerly awaited the next evolution in portable gaming. The GBA delivered that evolution.
In fact, many features we now take for granted in portables like the Switch can be traced back to the GBA. The addition of shoulder buttons, full 32-bit color graphics, and eventually even built-in backlighting with the 2003 release of the Game Boy Advance SP were all lauded as welcome innovations and improvements. Sadly, the GBA’s time in the sun was remarkably short. Pressured by the upcoming release of the Sony PSP, Nintendo released the GBA’s successor, the Nintendo DS, less than four years after the launch of the GBA.
Yet, GBA games continued to be released all the way into 2008. The GBA is still fondly remembered for its excellent ports of games like Super Mario World and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and for helping launch new franchises like Mega Man Zero and Golden Sun, but its library was much more than just those major titles. Dig a little deeper into it and you’ll find that the GBA was also home to some truly excellent hidden gems that are still worth checking out 20 years later.
15. Urban Yeti!
2002 | Cave Barn Studios
Keep in mind that in the early 2000s, developing games for the GBA was much cheaper than making a console game. Steam wasn’t a thing yet, and cell phones could barely run Snake. So, if you were an ambitious young developer with a goofy idea and a dream, your best bet for making it happen was to put it on Nintendo’s handheld.
Urban Yeti! is the type of weird, charming experience that typically only finds a cult audience on PCs nowadays. You play from a top-down perspective as the titular Yeti who is looking for his mate in a small city. Most of the time, the game plays like the first two Grand Theft Auto games with even more chances to punch random pedestrians. More importantly, finding a boombox starts a dancing freak out that clears the screen of enemies, and “missions” take the form of minigames inspired by titles like Toobin’ and Root Beer Tapper.
It’s weird and short, but always hilarious, and it’s unfortunately become increasingly obscure since its release.
14. Lady Sia
2001 | RFX Interactive
Most of the platformers on the GBA were either fantastic SNES ports or dreadful licensed fare, but a few original titles do stand out. The first thing you’ll probably notice about Lady Sia is that it looks great. Its big, bright graphics were a perfect fit for the GBA’s small screen. The gameplay is also surprisingly deep and utilizes combos, magic attacks, and even the ability to shape shift into a sasquatch during boss fights. Yes, this is the second game on the list to feature a playable Bigfoot, but we promise it’s the last.
Lady Sia was fairly well received at the time of its release, and a sequel was even planned in 2003. Sadly, it was canceled due to a lack of funding.
13. V-Rally 3
2002 | Velez & Dubail
The GBA was released at a time when the vast majority of console games were going full 3D. The GBA, however, was obviously built with 2D pixel games in mind. Those perceived limitations didn’t stop some developers from pushing the limits of what the handheld was capable of, though, as evidenced by the V-Rally 3 team managing to cram fully polygonal cars into the GBA.
Graphically, V-Rally 3 is undoubtedly the best-looking game on the system. Its surprisingly detailed outdoor tracks could easily be mistaken for an N64 game. You can even play the entire career mode in first-person. Thanks to some surprisingly smooth handling, though, V-Rally 3 proves to be much more than just great visuals. It may not look like much compared to modern racers, but it’s still the undisputed pinnacle of racing on the GBA.
12. Car Battler Joe
2002 | Ancient
Car Battler Joe is a decent RPG mixed with awesome car battling sections that elevate it above most of the GBA’s library. The story isn’t great (your father is missing and you have to find him), but the hook is that in this world, cars are a rarity. As such, you have to build your own Mad Max-style vehicle from spare parts found around the world and eventually battle other vehicles as you work to finish your quest.
That concept alone is begging for a sequel or spiritual successor. Sadly, most people have long forgotten about Joe, and even its re-release on the Wii U eShop in 2015 didn’t garner much attention.
11. Kuru Kuru Kururin
2001 | Eighting
Kuru Kuru Kururin is one of those puzzle games that sounds so simple in theory but ends up being surprisingly complex and a lot of fun. You play as a rotating stick (or “helicopter” in the North American version) that must make it to the goal at the end of a series of mazes. You control how quickly the stick rotates, and you’ll need to master that mechanic as the difficulty ramps up significantly in the later levels. This game remains a remarkably addictive experience until the end.
Though Kuru Kuru Kururin‘s core concept boasts nearly universal appeal, the game was only released on the GBA in Japan and Europe. A localized version finally made its way to North America in 2016 through the Wii U eShop, but Nintendo of America seems oddly stubborn about acknowledging the series. Neither of its two sequels ever made it out of Japan.
10. Sabre Wulf
2004 | Rare
Most gamers say that Rare peaked during the N64 era with a string of successful platformers and shooters, but old-school Rare still managed to squeeze out a handful of classic games for the GBA after the company was sold to Microsoft in 2002. Everything gamers love about classic Rare games is on full display in Sabre Wulf: the cutting-edge graphics, tight controls, and the trademark offbeat British sense of humor.
Unfortunately, Sabre Wulf didn’t find much of an audience. Prior to the release of this title, the Sabreman character hadn’t starred in a game in almost 20 years. The updated gameplay apparently didn’t appeal to older fans, and wasn’t innovative enough to attract younger gamers. It’s aged better than many other GBA games, though, and it’s certainly well worth a playthrough now.
9. Zone of the Enders: The Fist of Mars
2002 | Konami
While it was never as successful as Hideo Kojima’s other games, the Zone of the Enders series is still fondly remembered for some of the better action games of the PS2 era. Their unique mecha combat and Kojima’s flair for cinematic storytelling helped those games stand out from a competitive pack.
Unlike its console brethren, The Fist of Mars is a turn-based strategy game. That means it’s not nearly as fast-paced as the other Zone of the Enders games, but there is an aiming reticle for targeting enemies, so this is more action-oriented than the typical strategy game.
While Kojima wasn’t directly involved in the development of The Fist of Mars, the writing is surprisingly strong, hitting all the right dramatic and philosophical notes that mecha fans have come to expect from the genre.
8. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
2003 | Griptonite Games
EA released a couple of solid beat ‘em ups for consoles to coincide with the release of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, but the GBA versions are actually even better than those largely beloved adaptations. Like The Two Towers tie-in released a year prior, The Return of the King is basically Diablo in Middle Earth.
There are a whopping eight different playable characters pulled from the movie. Despite the technical constraints of the GBA, each of those characters plays completely differently. Aragorn is the classic warrior, Legolas is the able-bodied archer, and Gandalf uses magic to fell waves of orcs. They’re even all completely customizable with their own weapons and equipment.

Castlevania: Why the Game Boy Advance Games Are Worth Revisiting
By Chris Freiberg
The GBA version of Return of the King still stands out as one of the best Lord of the Rings games ever made, and future games inspired by Tolkien’s books would do well take a few cues from it.
7. Summon Night: Swordcraft Story
2006 | Flight-Plan
Thanks to lower development costs, the GBA featured many experiments that led to unusual combinations of genres. For instance, whereas many dungeon crawlers are typically slow, plodding affairs, Summon Night: Swordcraft Story sped things up through fast-paced, real-time battles inspired by the Tales of series. Battles in Swordcraft Story story are an absolute joy since you’re doing more than just scrolling through menus.
The sequel, released just a few months later on the GBA, is also worth checking out. Sadly, while the Summon Night main series is still chugging along, the Swordcraft Story subseries looks to be abandoned at this point.
6. Klonoa: Empire of Dreams
2001 | Namco
For a brief period in the early 2000s, the Klonoa series felt like it was on the verge of becoming a household name. All of the games were praised for their tight, diverse platforming, and the series’ word of mouth was generally strong, but the games just never seemed to reach a large audience.
Empire of Dreams is a side-story set between the events of the two console Klonoa games. It features the same use of the “wind bullet” to capture enemies and the same creative level design as its console big brothers. While it can’t pull off the 3D effects featured in those games, impressive multiplane backgrounds and advanced rotation effects do help it stand out among the GBA’s crowded library of platformers.
5. Rebelstar: Tactical Command
2005 | Codo Technologies
Don’t be fooled by the Rebelstar name: this is actually an X-Com game through and through. While there’s no base building or resource management in this GBA title, that classic tactical combat against an alien threat that defines the X-Com series can be found here in all its glory. Then again, what else would you expect? Rebelstar was created by the same guy behind X-Com, Julian Gollop.
Of course, this being a GBA game, Rebelstar’s visuals aren’t quite up to par with an X-Com title. In fact, some may find its more cartoony style jarring when paired with this style of gameplay, but Rebelstar certainly makes for a unique experience compared to the other tactics games out there.
4. Yggdra Union
2006 | Sting Entertainment
The final days of any gaming platform are a dark time typically defined by sporadic releases and shovelware. Yet, every now and then, a bright spot appears for those gamers who haven’t yet moved on to the next generation. As a deep mix of tactical RPG mechanics and card battles bolstered by some of the best 2D graphics on the portable, Yggdra Union is one of the better games released in the GBA’s post-DS era.
While the game’s story isn’t great, the regular banter between party members is charming, and there is a lot of content to keep you busy if the gameplay manages to hook you. A Switch port was even released in Japan last year, so keep your fingers crossed that it makes its way stateside.
3. Drill Dozer
2006 | Game Freak
Game Freak will always be known for the massively successful Pokemon franchise, but the developer has occasionally dabbled in other genres. The best of those experiments has to be Drill Dozer: a game about drilling. Need to go forward? Try drilling. Backward? Also drilling. What about jumping? Yeah, that actually involves drilling, too. It sounds repetitive, but there are so many different ways use to Jill’s Drill Dozer that the mechanic actually never wears out its welcome.
It might be tempting to check out Drill Dozer via emulation, but it’s actually worth tracking down the original cartridge for this one since it’s one of only two GBA games to feature a rumble back in the cart. It adds quite a lot to the experience.
2. Astro Boy: Omega Factor
2004 | Treasure
A handheld game based on an anime that hasn’t been popular in the United States since the ‘60s sounds like a recipe for disaster, but legendary Japanese developer Treasure could do no wrong in the ‘90s and early 2000s. Like most of the games in the Treasure catalog, Astro Boy: Omega Factor features fast arcade gameplay, massive screen-filling special attacks, and some of the most beautiful sprites the GBA could produce.
Though Treasure was once a prolific developer, responsible for classics like Ikaruga and Sin & Punishment, the company has gone quiet in recent years. The studio hasn’t even released a game stateside in the last decade. However, a re-release of this gem could mark a great comeback for the legendary developer if the licensing could be worked out.
1. Ninja Five-O
2003 | Hudson Soft
Ninja Five-O should have been a system seller for the GBA. The game feels like a lost classic from the 16-bit era. It’s a beautiful combination of Ninja Gaiden and Bionic Commando bolstered by tight controls and an over-the-top story about a magic-wielding ninja who is also a cop. Anyone who has managed to track down a copy swears up and down that it’s one of the very best experiences on the handheld.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Yet, Ninja Five-O was set up to fail from the start. It’s unknown how many copies were made, but it was nearly impossible to find one at the time of its release. Even though the game was developed in Japan, it was never even released there. Media outlets also barely covered it. Yet, the legend of Joe Osugi has only grown over the years, with complete copies of this game regularly selling on eBay for around $1,000. Even an authentic standalone cartridge will set you back several hundred dollars. You know what, though? It’s actually one of the few rare games that may be worth the price. It really is as good as you’ve heard.

How do things like SAGE make you feel? Good nostalgia? Bad nostalgia? Something else?
No nostalgia at all.
Nostalgia is something that has to build up over time. Nostalgia comes from memory. You romanticize earlier times in your life. You remember how easy things used to be. How warm and comforting they were because they weren’t now, when you have whatever currently concerns your brain looming over you.
But I’ve mentioned before that there are some games I don’t have nostalgia for. That’s because for a lot of my late teens and early-to-mid 20′s, I couldn’t afford new games. So I just rotated through the same retro games, over and over and over again.
Super Mario World. Donkey Kong Country. Sonic 3 & Knuckles. NiGHTS. Parappa the Rapper. Castlevania: SOTN. Half-Life. Doom. Klonoa. Donkey Kong Country 2. Yoshi’s Island. Super Mario 64. Sonic Adventure. Kirby Super Star. Rayman 2. Quake 3 Arena. Mario 3. Sonic 2. Chrono Trigger. Aladdin. Stunt Race FX. Gran Turismo. Link’s Awakening. Mega Man X. Star Fox. Mario Kart 64. Sonic Adventure 2. Crash Bandicoot. Crash Team Racing. Diddy Kong Racing. Ridge Racer Type 4. Tekken 3. Super Mario RPG.
Whoops. Hit the bottom of the list. Well, time to start back over from the top,  what haven’t I played in a while?
When you do that, you don’t build up nostalgia for anything, because those warm, fuzzy, rose-tinted memories never get to form. I learned this because since being employed by TSSZ and getting a steady feed of new releases, I’ve stopped replaying retro games quite as much.
There are exceptions, of course. I replay Donkey Kong Country roughly once per year, and the same goes for Sonic Adventure. But when it comes to games I’m away from for an appreciably longer time, like, say, Chrono Trigger or Rayman 2, the nostalgia is much more powerful for those games. I have clearer memory of the feelings I had when I first experienced those games.
I have never not paid attention to SAGE. Every year, sometimes multiple times per year, I’ve downloaded everything at the show and played most if not all of it. For 20 straight years. I covered SAGE for TSSZ for 12 years, writing something about its games every year.
Zero nostalgia. None. It doesn’t help that my memory is awful and I have a hard time even remembering early SAGEs. Jass contacted me for SAGE’s museum section this year to help them flesh it out and it was a lot of “I don’t actually remember” on my end.
That being said, it is of course very heartwarming that something I started so long ago is still going after all this time. Though, doing the research with Jass, it surprised me just how long I actually ran SAGE -- about a year. One in September of 2000, and the next in March of 2001. After that, I had a big upset in my life (I had a brief meltdown when my girlfriend dumped me) and I handed SAGE off to turn my life around... which... never really happened, I guess. Whoops.
I did remain on hand and very active helping others organize SAGE for at least another two or three years, though. So it’s not like I just dumped it on somebody else and ghosted on the event completely.
Anyway, it may very well be that SAGE will be one of the most important things I’ve ever created, so that’s pretty cool. At least I left a mark on something, somewhere, y’know? A whole generation of people will remember something I started as being a cool, constant thing in their lives. That’s something to be proud of.

GunLeo Fankids Headcanon:
Guntz and Leorina are parents of 8 kids! 4 Sons and 4 daughters! 8 Half-wolf and half-Lunatean offsprings made into the world by the Golden Killer Guntz and the Sky Pirate Leorina, a very hot & heavy, romantic, passionate, unstoppable and dangerous interspecies couple! (Plz let them meet in CANON Namco!)
GunLeo 8 in order:
1) Maxz, the first son, first born and eldest of GunLeo 8. His name is obviously like Max only with a Z added to the end, and from the Latin origin meaning "The Greatest". He has the appearance of a wolf except his fur is red with golden underfur markings. Red hair. His eyes are heterochromia, his right eye is dark blue (like his mother's eyes) and his left eye is light blue (like his father's). However, his light brown arms, leg calves, stomach and chest are furless. Light brown skin under his fur. He also has no tail. And he inherited Leo's rhombus/diamond-shaped mole birthmark on the bridge of his nose. Maxz's birthdate is October 31, (Halloween) 2018.
2) Kya, the first daughter, second born and second eldest. Her name is from the Swahili origin meaning "Sky Diamond/ Diamond From the Sky". She has the appearance of a light brown-skinned Lunatean except she has black/golden ears, canine paw pads underneath her feet, and a black tail of a wolf. Her hair is black. Like her only big bro, she also has heterochromia eyes except the other way around, right eye is light blue and left eye is dark blue. And rhombus/diamond birthmark mole on bridge of nose. Kya's birthdate is April 6, 2021.
3) Blitz, the second son and third born. His name is of German origin that means "Lightning/Flash". His appearance is of a light brown-skinned Lunatean with wolf black/gold ears and wolf black tail. His hair is black. His upper furry ears, tail and hair are in the shade of licorice black (#1a1110). He has dark green eyes, which he inherited from his late paternal grandfather Butz (my HC is that Butz's eyes were green). And rhombus/diamond birthmark mole on bridge of nose. Blitz's birthdate is May 1, 2024.
4) Lexee, the second daughter and fourth born. Her name is a variant of short nicknames Lexy, Lexi and Lexie, which are from the name Alexandra (female variant of Alexander), which is of Greek origin, and means "Man's Defender/Defender of the People". Her name is not short for Alexandra though, Guntz and Leorina just named her Lexee. Her appearance is of a brink pink/brownish golden wolf with furless arms and leg calves. Her brink pink hair matches her main fur of course. Her hair and upper fur color brink pink (#fb607f) is a soft red color. Light brown skin under her fur. No tail. Her eyes are in the color of phlox or psychedelic purple (#df00ff), which were inherited from her late maternal grandmother, whom I headcanon named Kimana. And of course, the rhombus/diamond birthmark mole on bridge of nose. Lexee's birthdate is June 19, 2025.
5) Paz, the third son and fifth born. His name in Spanish and Portuguese translates to "Peace", while in Hebrew, it means "Gold" or "Fine Gold". His appearance is of golden/brown wolf with furless arms, leg calves, stomach and chest area. Hair is gold. He also has canine paw pads underneath his feet. Light brown skin under his fur. He has dark blue eyes. And as usual, the rhombus/diamond mole on bridge of nose. Paz's birthdate is January 28, 2027.
6) Nyota, the third daughter and sixth born. Her name in Swahili means "Star". She has an appearance of a light brown-skinned Lunatean with hair, wolf ears and wolf tail that are all actually strawberry blonde, which is a color that she inherited from her late paternal grandmother whom I HC'd that Estrella was her name, which also means "Star" only in Spanish, and was a strawberry blonde-colored wolf with the exact light blue eyes as her son Guntz. Nyota even has light blue eyes. And she obviously has her rhombus/diamond mole on bridge of nose. Nyota's birthdate is July 7, (Tanabata day in Japan) 2029.
& Finally 7) & 8): Fraternal twins: Ignatz and Iris. Ignatz is the fourth son, seventh born and second youngest, and Iris is the fourth daughter, eighth/last born and the youngest of all of GunLeo's 8 children. The gap between I&I (family's and friends's nickname for the twins when they're together) after birth is 20 minutes. Ignatz's name means "Fiery One" in German and Iris' is "Rainbow" in Greek. Ignatz's appearance is a light brown-skinned Lunatean with wolf ears and tail while Iris' is a wolf with her arms and leg calves being furless, and light brown skin under her fur. Iris also has no tail. Just like their 6 older siblings, I&I inherited Leo's rhombus aka diamond-shaped mole birthmark on bridges of their noses. The color of I&I's fur is brown, which is like the color mixed combination of Guntz's black & golden fur and Leorina's red hair; however, it could also be an inherited trait from their late maternal grandfather whom I HC for his name to be Zeke (short for Ezekiel) who's hair was dark brown, and that his daughter Leorina actually got not only her dark blue eyes, but also her diamond mole on nose from him. Therefore, I&I's wolf ears are brown and gold. Ignatz's wolf tail is brown. Iris has brown/golden fur. The twins have matching brown hair too. He and she also have canine paw pads underneath their feet. And I&I happen to have hazel eyes, and that those eyes were actually inherited from their late great-grandmother who was the paternal grandmother to Leorina. Ignatz's and Iris' birthdate is August 14, 2032.

From: Klonoa 2: Lunatea’s Veil Official Guide Book (Published by Famitsu/Enterbrain - 2001) (Pg. 201)
~Messages from the Klonoa 2 Staff~ Lastly, we would like to show you messages from those who were involved in the development of Klonoa 2 to the public. You'll find hard work, inside stories, and a few positive ones(?!) here and there! ......So, thank you all for your hard work!
Yoshihiko Arawi Profile: ● Age: 31 years old ● Blood Type: AB ● Responsibilities: Graphics director, character design, scenario, direction, etc. (Art Director, Lead Character Artist, Screenplay) ● Comments: This was the result of our staff’s blood, sweat, tears, and many other efforts. I am proud to say that we have been able to provide deep gameplay that stimulates the imagination through hidden elements and underlying themes, character movements, and the thoughts entrusted to the background world. We hope you enjoy the game in a natural way, without worrying about such things. First and foremost, have a pleasant adventure in this world! ● Favorite characters: The more I struggled, the more I love and hate Klonoa (laugh). In terms of design, Tat and Spooky Moo are the most like me.
Mika Tominaga Profile: ● Age: Secret ● Blood Type: O ● Responsibilities: Chief of the background team (Background design and production) ● Comments: Tranquility, joy, discord, indecision, and sorrow. Each kingdom of Lunatea is based on human emotions. We prepared the stage for Klonoa, a place where people can be at peace, have fun, be angry, be troubled, be sad, accept these emotions, and grow up. I would like to thank the background staff, the Klonoa team, and all the players who played the game with us. Thank you! ● Favorite character: Joila, the idol of Joilant Fun Park.
Manabu Okano Profile: ● Age: 29 years old ● Blood Type: Unknown  ● Responsibilities: 3D character model chief, character lighting, etc. ● Comments: Enjoy the dynamic movements of the characters and their emotional portrayals. ● Favorite character: King of Sorrow
Naoko Ishizu Profile: ● Age: ? years old ● Blood Type: O ● Responsibilities: Leorina and puppets in general (Character Animation, Lead Puppet Display Scriptor) ● Comments: I am very attached to Leorina because it was the first time for me to create a model, and I had a lot of hard work to do. When deciding on the camera angle for the puppets, I thought, “It would be cooler to shoot from below to make her look more intimating.” I tried to create impactful atmosphere for Leorina, even though she did not appear in the game very often. ● Favorite character: Leorina
Daigo Okumura Profile: ● Age: 26 years old ● Blood Type: O ● Responsibilities: Lolo’s model, motion production, background character production, etc. ● Comments: I have a confession to make, but there was one part in Lolo’s creation that left me with some regret before the final mastering. When Mr. Arai was thinking up Lolo’s favorite thing, I felt I had to make a statement: “Lolo’s favorite thing is mocha java, it’s the only way! It’s perfect! Perfect!” But I was rejected without a second thought. I hope to work without regrets next time. ● Favorite character: Tat
Aiko Shimosako Profile: ● Age: 26 years old ● Blood Type: O ● Responsibilities: Backgrounds (3D Background Design) ● Comments: I was in charge of designing the puppet display backgrounds and a few backgrounds for the main game. I became a big fan of Klonoa: Door to Phantomile before I joined the company, and my first project after joining was Klonoa 2. The thing that remains in my memory are the bugs we had with puppet displays. Unlike bugs during gameplay, the bugs concerning puppet displays were interesting. Too bad we can’t see them anymore in the full version. (Of course!!) ● Favorite character: Moo! (Especially the ones that sleep)

Alright, the Anime Los Angeles Haul:
My cosplay was a White Mage (in an upcoming post) on Friday.  I wore my Klonoa again Saturday
Artist alley was really fun at this con.  I also had a lot more I was looking forward to (mainly JRPGs), so I diversified my AA haul even more this year

Commissions to be posted separately.  I got one for Legend of Mana, Wild Arms 2 and I might get one soon for Lufia 2.
I also made a new friend for my White Mage cosp:
Tumblr media
I won this helmet at a panel about working with foam.  He made it look so easy and watched him make it in like 45 mins.  Might make a Doomguy cosplay with it
Tumblr media
Also won a tiny bottle with a plant in it from a quest.  They were cosplaying generic (but also amazing-looking) RPG quest givers.  I got it from taking a pic of the Tales of Gathering.  I had already planned on going to the Tales Gathering in hopes of seeing a Lloyd Irving or ToP cosplayers, but no luck
Tumblr media
There was also a ribbon game I enjoyed at the con.  You collect ribbons by participating in activities, trading with or asking others; It was really fun and there was even a Smash Bros themed challenge!  I’m gonna get my own next time!
This is how long mine was
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then the Smash ribbons:

And now: some of my favorite cosplays:
Tumblr media
Marx (Kirby)
Tumblr media
Kain (Final Fantasy IV)
Tumblr media
Flint and Hinawa (Mother 3).  Thanks for the Mr. Saturn ribbon!
Tumblr media
Allister (Not the Hazbin one fortunately)
Tumblr media
Alucard (Castlevania)

A group of FF6 cosplayers.  Also found a totally separate Gau, but unable to take a pic.  You guys also win!
Tumblr media
A group of FFX cosplayers.
Tumblr media
Decidueye.
Tumblr media
A different White Mage + Black Mage.  Also found an FF1 Warrior and Red Mage.
It was an all-around chiller and more accepting environment (sans the ahegao sweatshirts).  I also did karaoke as Klonoa and tried singing Stepping Wind, but got destroyed.

KieueCaprie's 2022 Games Complete List #5 (21-25)
#21: Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak (PC)
Started 🚩: 30/6/22 Finished 🏁: 4/7/22
Initially, going into Master Rank, I absolutely hated every second of it due to the fact that you basically get three-shot if you're not careful, and everything is a damage sponge until you get better weapons, as they would be with moving onto the next rank in Monster Hunter.
HOWEVER, I eventually found that I had more decoration slots free in the Master Rank armor than I initially thought. So, slapped on some Defense Jewels and suddenly the game became bearable, even more so when I put on some stun resistance to the point where I could become immune to being stunned, the worst kind of status effect in Monster Hunter games.
Switch Skill Swap, initially, was underwhelming as it felt like I wasn't really doing much outside of changing one or two switch skill moves. But then lategame hit and I suddenly found uses for it and it made my main weapon, Sword and Shield, so much more fun to use!
Also, it has a small baby owl you can pet in the new hub. It's not Poogie but it is a respectable replacement.
#22: Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series (PC)
Klonoa: Door to Phantomile
Started 🚩: 7/7/22 Finished 🏁: 8/7/22
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What a cute and adorable game! :) I hope nothing messed up happens in it. :)
To be serious, this game was adorable from start to finish and I enjoyed *stares at hand* ...inflating my enemies and throwing them at other enemies to make them pop...
I will say, the return to the old crusty voice acting can be a bit jarring sometimes, especially when you put the new voice clips in-game side-by-side with the cutscene audio.
However, I still liked it and I love the whole setting and everything, even with the messed up thing that I alluded to earlier.
Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil
Started 🚩: 8/7/22 Finished 🏁: 12/7/22
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ahh, the older and slightly more edgier counterpart to the first game's soft and light. I also enjoyed this remake a lot and I swear I've played this before as I distinctly remember playing some Playstation game where you rung bells and then something happens.
The story on this one is also pretty good, although there's no messed up thing that happens in the middle of it all, and the characters are just as adorable, Klonoa too.
My major criticism about this one is that the difficulty is all over the place, especially in the lategame. Felt like, at times, I wasn't being challenged and then suddenly I had to make pixel perfect jumps over bottomless pits. Fortunately, this game was very generous with lives, much like the first game, and I eventually cleared it.
I highly recommend the remake and I suggest that if you are so much as have a passing interest, you should PICK IT UP SO THAT BANDAI NAMCO CAN STOP GIVING IT THE SILENT TREATMENT.
#23: My Friend Peppa Pig (PC, Game Pass)
Started 🚩: 14/7/22 Finished 🏁: 14/7/22
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A cinematic masterpiece from start to finish. Is definitely a contender for Game of All The Years. My only major criticism is that they didn't include popular Peppa Pig antagonist, Lucina, in the game, although they did include them later on as a superboss that you could unlock after maxing out your social link with George and unlocking Dinosaur George. But first, you needed to do the Dark Route where you end up taking Potato Man's place by turning him into The Seven Legendary Fries and then fighting each of them in the many locations you and Peppa travelled to.
It was tough, lemme tell you that. Not even gonna SPEAK of the Golden Ending Boss. Did you know how many Ethers I had to use? EIGHTY-FOUR OF THEM.
(On a serious note: this game is just okay. I feel like it's actually a pretty good distraction for gamers who have children but it leaves me wishing there was more substance to it but that's perhaps asking too much of baby games (non-derogatory) these days)
#24: Escape Academy (PC)
Started 🚩: 16/7/22 Finished 🏁: 17/7/22
Tumblr media
I played the demo back when it was available during that one Next Fest... or whatever Steam was holding at the time???? And I really liked the idea of it all, so I wishlisted it and waited for release, which happened to be on my birthday (WOW!).
I really enjoyed my time with it, the story was petty decent, the gameplay was solid, the characters were likable, the puzzles tore my hair out at parts. I think my only criticism here is that this game felt a bit... short? Not that it's a bad thing, it's just that I wish there was more to it.
I look forward to playing it in the far future when the brain fog finally sets in.
#25: Live A Live (Switch)
Started 🚩: 28/7/22 Finished 🏁: 5/8/22
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I played Live A Live many, many, MANY years ago back when there was a fan translation for it (which is actually pretty good btw) when it was only available in Japan on the Super Famicom... Don't ask how I got to play it.
Either way, it was nice to see Square Enix give Live A Live the 2DHD treatment and, for the first time, have it published outside of Japan. And what a remake it is between the music and the art, it felt really, really polished.
It also came with a slew of Quality of Life features that made certain chapters (Near Future for one) much more bearable to complete on top of everything else.
I'd say more but that'd go into spoiler territory, so I recommend you play it if you have the time and money for it!

Avast! I return for a new Devlog! I won’t bog y’all down with The Big Sad Story (Trademark Pending) that led up to this, but where I’m at now is making a Klonoa fangame in RPG Maker MV... a game that is, in more or less every respect, much less ambitious than anything I’ve attempted before this point. Something that is much more focused on playing nice with my strengths (visual design, broad concepts) and improving on the weaknesses that I’m *actually* interested in shoring up (transferring themes and concepts into specific events and writing) rather than those that I don’t *really* care about (programming).
On the subject of the game itself (the thing you most likely actually care about), the idea is to pose the question “What if we isolated Guntz’ arc involving Janga from Heroes, played into the ship’ between Janga and Butz the fandom (from what I’ve seen) likes to toy with so much, and then took a longer, harder, and more serious look at some of the themes that logically come from such a thing?” Or, to put it in English rather than Fandomese, “What happens when you go out seeking to exact justice on an old soldier?“
Ergo, I’m naming this game “Klonoa: Poison from the Past,” at least for the time.
I don’t really have a specific plan as to how I’m going to get this done in time, but the hope is that I’ll be finished before Dec. 11th, the series’ 24th anniversary. (Having a specific deadline does wonders for one’s productivity.) Currently I have finished the foreground tileset and am now well into working my way through drawing all of the enemies in the game which, unless I come upon some major setback, should be done before the first half of the week is over. Next devlog ain’t coming out till next Sunday though.
Feel free to ask questions in the meanwhile, though! I’m going to be very careful about just how much I give away, but I’ll be happy to answer general questions about the setting, characters, etc... y’know, the surface level stuff.
Peace,
ThatTwoGuy
