Fun Ideas About A Gorilla Safari In Uganda
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/9ee03f6b536931cb494ddcaae322b601/f52938937ed67fb4-31/s540x810/6931f4f5fdb9ba811922130de13e0f2cb1670a47.jpg)
Fun ideas about a gorilla safari in Uganda: Gorilla safari in Uganda offers an imaginary experience with the endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitats. This experience takes you on an adventurous search of the primates under tropical rainforest thickets in the dense canopies. Gorilla safaris in Uganda are done in only two places in the whole country. These places are Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorillas National Park. These two protected areas combined make up more than half of the remaining mountain gorilla population of the world.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is located in the country’s southwestern region, covering the districts of Kabale, Kisoro, and Kanungu. Bwindi was established in 1992 after it had been a forest reserve for a long time. By the time it was gazette as a national park, mountain gorillas had been sighted for the first time in the park. It stretches for over 331 square kilometers of dense tropical thickets, which makes it impenetrable.
Mountain gorillas are social beings just like humans since we share 98% of DNA, they live in groups known as gorilla families. Each gorilla family is protected by a strong, big silverback who is the dominant male gorilla and head of the family. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has over 50 gorilla families. However, only 26 families are habituated and ready for trekking. These families are scattered, living in the four different gorilla sectors in the park: Buhoma, Nkuringo, Rushaga, and Ruhija. These sectors are well-distributed from north to south and east to west.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park stretches for over 33.9 square kilometers in the southwestern region of Uganda, close to the border with Rwanda. The park has one habituated gorilla family called Nyakagezi. The park was gazette in 1991 after the discovery of mountain gorillas in the area. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park has over 100 mountain gorillas. The park has a scenic landscape of rolling Virunga mountain ranges. The Virunga ranges in the park include Mount Sabyinyo, Mount Muhabura, and Mount Gahinga. These mountains add an important experience to your gorilla trekking experience.
Although gorilla safaris in Uganda offer a jaw-dropping and breathtaking experience, it takes just a few hours in the jungle. Therefore, here are some fun ideas about a gorilla safari in Uganda.
Batwa community encounter
After a thrilling experience with the mountain gorillas in the dense jungles, visitors can then head to the Batwa communities for a cultural encounter with the Batwa people. The Batwa people are one of the oldest pygmy groups in Africa. These people are the original forest keepers as they dwelled in the forest of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. These people survived fully in the forest by gathering fruits and hunting small animals. When the national parks were gazette, the Batwa people were forced out and had to adapt to the living conditions they were not used to.
Visitors can now combine gorilla safaris with a Batwa cultural experience where they will experience the different values, norms, and beliefs of these people. Visitors can also learn different survival skills like hunting and fire making as showcased by the Batwa people.
Golden monkey tracking
Golden monkeys, just like their gigantic cousins, the mountain gorillas, are rare and are only found in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Golden monkeys are distinct by their appearance of having golden fur on their cheeks and back with dark legs. They are also social animals and live in groups called troops. Each troop is assigned about six trekkers who, after navigating through the thickets, encounter these primates and spend an hour with them in their presence. A golden monkey tracking experience adds the icing to the gorilla trekking safaris. Golden monkey tracking is not as intense since these primates dwell at the base of mountains in bamboo trees.
Boat cruise at Lake Bunyonyi
Lake Bunyonyi is the deepest lake in the country and the third deepest in Africa. Lake Bunyonyi is located in the Kabale district bordering the Mgahinga Gorilla and Bwindi Impenetrable National Parks. A boat cruise experience on this lake is a call answered by nature and the aquatic wilderness.
Visitors on the boat cruise can enjoy the chill and calmness of the tranquil waters of the lake and get lost in amazing therapy of greatness. The silence and calmness mingle with the many melodies from the numerous birds on the lake to craft a beautiful scene from the storybooks. The lake is located very close to the gorilla trekking destinations hence, a boat cruise experience can be added to your gorilla safari bucket list.
Cycling experience
Responsible travel or tour is usually what we emphasize in a bid to leave the world better than we found. This is why a cycling experience is great to combine with a gorilla safari in Uganda since cycling reduces carbon emissions that vehicles could have put in the environment. On top of that cycling experiences are a great way to explore the different communities that live close to the gorilla destinations. While on this cycling adventure, visitors can interact with the locals and buy a thing or two from their fresh fruit and food markets to support their income.
Wildlife viewing experiences
Ugandan safaris cannot be complete with just a gorilla trekking safari hence, a wildlife viewing experience can also be added. Wildlife viewing is experienced in the different savannah destinations in the country. Queen Elizabeth National Park is the closest park to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park among the savannah parks. Queen Elizabeth National is packed with a variety of wildlife species, including the 4 of the big five animals, lions, elephants, buffaloes, and leopards. These are a great addition to the other species like hyenas, antelopes, hippos, crocodiles, warthogs, waterbucks, reedbucks, etc.

The Batwa commonly known as pygmies are an endangered group of people inhabiting the Echuya forest reserve in Kisoro & Kabale. Believed to have migrated from Ituri forest of DR Congo, the Batwa are also a very important cultural attraction in Uganda.

A visit to the Batwa offers you opportunities to learn more about the history and way of life of these once-traditional food gatherers and hunters. You can add this fascinating tribe on your Uganda tour package for a full feel of culture, nature and wildlife. Being situated close to Bwindi forest- you could always venture here after your safari.

How to Prepare for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda: Tips and Tricks
Gorilla trekking in Uganda is one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences on the planet. Walking through the lush rainforests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, you’ll have the rare opportunity to come face-to-face with mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Preparing for this unique adventure, however, requires thoughtful planning and practical tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable trek.
1. Research and Choose the Best Time to Visit
The best time for gorilla treks in Uganda is during the dry seasons, from June to September and December to February. During these periods, the forest trails are less slippery, making the trek more manageable. However, Uganda’s equatorial climate means occasional rain can occur year-round, so be prepared for wet conditions regardless of your travel date.
2. Obtain Gorilla Trekking Permits in Advance
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/c57f4ad8fc7f70d6125c300012fb81ee/37f26c3a11351800-34/s540x810/bf32d6e4025225ad23f79dcfcc58ffbfdbe5d455.jpg)
3. Pack the Essentials
Packing wisely can make or break your gorilla trekking experience. Key items to include are:
Sturdy Hiking Boots: Trails are often steep and muddy. Invest in comfortable, waterproof boots with good grip.
Lightweight Rain Jacket: Rain is a frequent companion in the rainforest, so a quality rain jacket is essential.
Long-Sleeved Shirts and Pants: These protect you from scratches, insect bites, and thorny vegetation.
Gloves: Gardening or hiking gloves can help you grip tree trunks or steady yourself on challenging trails.
Water Bottle and Snacks: Staying hydrated and energized is crucial for the trek.
Camera and Binoculars: Capture your memories, but ensure your camera is silent and flash-free to avoid disturbing the gorillas.
4. Physical Fitness Preparation
Gorilla trekking in Uganda requires a moderate to high level of fitness, as the trails can be steep, muddy, and physically demanding. Prepare by engaging in regular physical activities such as hiking, walking, or light jogging before your trip.
5. Understand Gorilla Trekking Rules
To protect the gorillas and ensure your safety, it’s essential to follow these rules:
Maintain a minimum distance of 7 meters from the gorillas.
Do not eat, drink, or smoke near the gorillas.
Avoid sudden movements or loud noises that may startle them.
If you’re unwell, you’ll not be permitted to trek, as gorillas are susceptible to human diseases.
6. Dress for Success
The right attire can significantly enhance your trekking experience. Opt for muted colors like green, brown, or khaki to blend into the forest environment. Avoid bright colors or noisy fabrics that could distract the wildlife.
7. Hire a Porter
Porters are invaluable for carrying your backpack, helping you navigate tricky terrain, and offering support during steep climbs. Hiring a porter also supports the local community, as many are former poachers who now earn a living through tourism.
8. Respect the Local Culture
Uganda is home to diverse cultural communities, especially in areas surrounding the trekking parks. Respect the customs, greet locals warmly, and consider exploring nearby villages to enrich your travel experience.
9. Travel with a Reliable Tour Operator
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/f3ee083d0770d160525641aef80def55/37f26c3a11351800-cd/s500x750/524f8f012e52589a24cbbfc6cccb693d274d0cab.jpg)
10. Explore Nearby Attractions
While gorilla trekking may be the highlight of your trip, the nearby areas offer plenty of additional attractions. Consider visiting:
Lake Bunyonyi: A serene retreat for relaxation after your trek.
Queen Elizabeth National Park: Famous for its tree-climbing lions and game drives.
Kisoro Town: A cultural hub with local crafts and vibrant markets.
Preparing for gorilla trekking in Uganda requires careful planning, proper gear, and a willingness to embrace adventure. By following these tips, you’ll be ready for a once-in-a-lifetime experience with the majestic mountain gorillas.
