#Kinnporsche episode 10

Hello, theme of episode 10! Lots of decisions about trust in this one. Mostly bad decisions (e.g. trusting Vegas. Looking at you, Porsche and Tawan).

This is most brutal thing that happens in this series, and someone is getting beheaded later.

Heh at Arm's offense at Tawan reaching over him to control his mouse. Yeah, that IS the most annoying thing in the universe, Arm.

First thing that happens in Season 2 after the Theerapanyakul brothers kill their father is that the three of them have a meeting and decide to send Arm for some continuing education in IT security.

Ok but what WAS the fucking plan, Vegas? From where I sit, it looks like: 1. Seperate Porsche from Kinn 2. ??? 3. Profit! Maybe there's something in there about how he was going to use Porsche to help him get back the blackmail information from the Yakuza? Maybe he gets himself out of hot water there and lets Porsche die or kills him in the process, breaking Kinn's heart twice over? But it seems equally possible to me he planned to marry Porsche and settle into 50 years of fake non-kinky domesticity (no way does Porsche have the patience for all those chains and ropes) just to piss Kinn off. Anyway. I think I've thought harder about this than the writers as this point.

Let's focus on Kim and Big coming in all heroic to save the day so I don't have to think about what happens to Big next.

Kinn's "what the fuck is wrong with you" look at Tawan, echoing the reaction of the audience and everyone in the known universe.

Big's entire funeral: getting carried offscreen in a bodybag while Kinn self-castigates for a whole ten seconds.

I love Tong's acting in the Ken's disembodied head scene. He's pissed off and grossed out with genuine existential horror underneath. It's really good.

Uncle Gun outfit appreciation moment.

Hmm, so you're okay with killing family, Kinn? Let's introduce a new concept. It's called "patricide."

Nothing about KinnPorsche is realistic, except for 20-something dudes being fundamentally kind of gross.

Episode 10, truly the most unhinged of them all.

i've always loved this scene between kim and korn

at no point does it seem like a conversation between father and son. rather it's a conversation between two opponents.

but korn doesn't seem to see kim as a genuine threat (the whole season he doesn't seem to be doing anything to hinder kim's investigation or bring him back into the fold), but he does deeply distrust him. he doesn't offer more information than kim already has (kinn has a new bodyguard. he used to be a bartender), goes on the defense when kim pries more into his motivations ("why? are you interested?") and the second kim leaves, he checks the drawer kim snooped in.

i think it's an amazing way to show the dynamic between the two. now if only kim's investigation had actually gone somewhere.

Love a parallel - especially when it lets us contrast relationships between the characters!

Because when Kinn is talking to Tawan in his cell, he's more open with his emotions - we can clearly see his anger, and that he's not at all conflicted about locking him up.

But it's different with Porsche. Here, Kinn's face is carefully blank - he's showing no real emotion and that's because he's conflicted about his decision here.

We know from the end of this episode and the next that Kinn does not really believe Tawan or think Porsche betrayed him. But he has to play the politics of the situation, because Tawan and his bodyguards are watching his every move.

He has to punish Porsche or his plans will be ruined (though punishing him will end up turning it into a shit show anyways)

But he knows doing this will hurt Porsche deeply. So, Kinn locks down on his own emotions to get through it.

Even as that cold, blank expression hurts Porsche even more.

ok so im doing a watch of KP with my bestie so im kinda doing my own rewatch and i just had THOUGHTS. with big investigating everything with porsche's family and unlocking pieces of the nampheung debacle and providing that info to Kim... do we think he would've lived anyway? i think it's very possible Tawan merely expedited an ending Big was already hurdling towards. at what point would Korn have taken him out to protect his secret? or was it fun for him to see his son's wheels turning, was there a little pride there? i just don't think he would've allowed a loose end like Big to continue, though. i don't really think he could've allowed a "lowly bodyguard" to walk around just knowing this information - even if he never pieced together the whole story.

as much as i HATE Big's death in episode 10, i think maybe it was inevitable.. and maybe it was kinder to be killed by an enemy than by your own. (likely Chan)

The Sign (Sat YT) ep 9 of 12 - I love this show so damn much. This may be my KinnPorsche. It’s just so endlessly entertaining in a perfectly unhinged way. I love that they looped Tharn’s dad back into the murder investigations.

You know kinksters have invented necklaces that can’t come off… right? Just saying.

Meanwhile, would it still be BL if our seme didn’t wake up from drowning and instantly go chase snake?

No. No it would not. 

Remember the one hard and fast rule of BL? When a seme gives a BJ it’s penance. Phaya is apologizing to Tharn for leaving him behind.

Heh. Hard and fast. I kill me. 

Pit Babe (Fri iQIYI) ep 10 of 14 - How is this absurd creature managing to rise in the ranks? Pavel turned in some stellar grief and ALANJEFF have my whole heart. I make Ikea puns in the... Trash watch happening here.

Cooking Crush (Sun YT) ep 7 of 12 - The make-out montage was absolutely charming and very much American rom com style - interesting (and rare) to see in a BL (not to mention from OffGun. How far we have come since Puppy Honey?)

Meanwhile, another wonderful grandma in a BL!

Next week we do an actual harken back to Puppy Honey, so obviously I’m now enjoying this whole show way more than before. I think it helped that I watched it earlier in the week, when it wasn’t competing with any other BLs. 

Last Twilight (Fri YT) ep 11 of 12 - Not gonna lie, I knew from you all that this was gonna be a rough ep. But I very clearly remember the penultimate Bad Buddy ep so I now have slightly more trust than others in GMMTV on this matter. 

That said, this was a crap episode.

You can’t set Mork’s truth and character motivation reveal up like that and then have his lover choose to dismiss him in a way that diminishes not just both character's growth AND all of Mork's actions towards Day, but also our faith in every other character. It was a shitty narrative thing to do to us, and it was a shitty thing to do to Mork. And that doesn’t even take into account the forgiveness allotted by the story to Day’s unrepentant excuse for a mother.  The doom should have been handled differently. The mom shoudl have leaned in even more evil and actively lied to split them apart.

I don't know if they can redeem this misstep in the final episode. But I'm interested to see them try. That said, this plot seem to be true to the book. 

For Him (Thurs iQIYI) ep 8 of 12 - A major trigger has landed. But also it’s clear who’s fault that incident was... and it’s not Him’s. So Blue's so-called-friend really is unhinged. This episode was a little bit more engaging than last week, but it’s only because stuff actually happened. I’m still not sure I enjoyed it. 

Twins the series (Fri GaGa) ep 12fin - Despite the fact that I’ve been annoyed by the show the last couple of episodes, I’m still sad for it to end. It was a good reveal and First had the right response. Also a very sports way to end it. Sprite is a v clingy bf. 

In brief?

A messy very Thai pulp sports romance that actually managed to involve sports in an identical twins trading-places plot. Basically Not Me meets HIStory 2 Crossing the Line (although vastly inferior to either) with an endearing main character and a good lead pair (poor things), both soapy and earnest without too much camp. It tried so hard but the plot, side couples, and extraneous characters let us down. Passable if not great. 7/10 

Time the series (Thai Gaga) ep 2 of 10 - Eh. Whatever. 

My Universe (Sun iQIYI) ep 22 of 24 - skipped this installment

Although I Love You and You AKA Sukiyanen Kedo Do Yaro ka (Japan Gaga) ep 2 of 10 - Funny how quickly he retracted that confession and everyone called him out for doing it too soon (including me from a narrative beats perspective). It was a cute screw up - I see what your meta-arse is doing there, Japan. Also our Tokyo-boy’s serious reserved earnestness is extra adorable in the surrounded by Osaka enthusiasm context. His accidental flirting is that much more heart wrenching for our poor baby seme.  And they ended this ep with honorific negotiations!! Be still my heart. I’m really adoring this show.

Your hyung romance super fan is back in the game! 

Meanwhile the Osaka accent is beyond adorable. 

Sahara-sensei to Toki-kun (Japan Fri Gaga) ep 6 of 8 - Japan what are you doing? I do love the not-sorta-ex from the past. 

VIP Only (Taiwan Fri Gaga) ep 10fin - I loved all the young people in the hawker center supporting the campaign against the terrible mother. They make a good domestically sappy couple. But that is Taiwan's specialty.

In brief?

A sweet if aimless story about a writer and a chef finding love via noodles, fake dating, and family challenges. If it had a tighter script and a shorter run, more like a KBL this might’ve been quite special. But it didn’t and it lost me too many times. 6/10

I don’t like to be disappointed by Taiwan.

Playboyy (Thurs Gaga) 14 eps - Dear Playboyy, it's not you, it’s me… I hate you. You’re about as deep (and as palatable) as a shot glass of cum. While I'm sure you’re someone’s kink, you're my weakest link. Goodbye. I DNFed this at ep 5. Frankly I'm impressed with myself for getting that far.

The Whisperer (Sun ????) 10 eps - Ends next week. Thai horror BL that ALSO involves cheating (what joy is mine). I don't think even the perfect single dimple can motivate me to watch. Word is... it's terrible.

7 Days Before Valentine (Weds WeTV) 10 eps - Giving me Luminous Solution vibes. I'm waiting to binge if safe.

I like the idea of Big as a sacrifice—willing or not. Although animals given in sacrifice don't have a choice, Big chooses to put himself in the way of a bullet meant for Porsche. It is some of the only agency he has.

In the story, he attempts to change his circumstances, to stop events from unfolding in the way they do, but he has so little power that he is unable to stop the inevitable. He must follow the orders given to him by the Theerapanyakul family (and even Tawan, when Kinn insists) even if he disagrees with them. He attempts to warn them that Tawan is not trustworthy, but is disregarded. The way Big struggles to stop the incoming tragedy—and is unable to—is haunting, to me. I don't think he is doomed by the narrative in the traditional sense, but I do think the story insists on blood, on a death that has some emotional impact (whether that is lasting for the characters in-universe, or the dead ever get mentioned again… well, don't worry about it). Someone has to die, and because Porsche cannot die, someone else who loves Kinn must die in his stead. Big makes that choice, substitutes himself for Porsche, and becomes the sacrifice.

Because of this choice, Kinn will get to live on with Porsche, even if he's still trapped into a role he does not enjoy but feels obligated to play. Vegas will nearly die trying (and failing) to become the person his father wants, to earn respect and love that he will never get from him. And Big will die for Kinn, who will never see him or care about him the way Big wants him to.

The question here, and at the end of the story is, 'Was it worth it?'

I've been meaning to talk about the change in Tankhun's wardrobe over the course of the series for a while, and this gifset crossing my dash again ended up being the motivation I needed. So here we go!

As highlighted by at gifset, green lighting and backdrops are often used to indicate danger in the show. It is also a color heavily associated with the Minor Family and some great meta has been written about the use and significance of the color on the show and especially about Porsche's final green suit. Green is the color of greed, of danger, of corruption. But green can have more positive associations with it as well: it can represent hope, growth, renewal, rebirth...

But what does this have to do with Tankhun? Well it's all in the wardrobe.

When we are first introduced to Tankhun on the show, he’s hard to miss in his fuchsia robe. It's a color we see a lot of when it comes to Tankhun. For the first half of the season he’s awash in pink and color, wearing fuchsias, reds, golds, and the occasional blue-tinted metallic or sky blue. And his character is much like the colors he wears—loud and attention-seeking and distracting.

But then as we approach mid-season, we start to see a switch occur in the colors he chooses to wear. The bright reds and fuchsias fade and we start to see more subdued colors—solid whites, greens, and blacks (all fabulously and loudly styled of course because he’s still Tankhun). In fact, Tankhun’s primary wardrobe color across SIX different outfits in the last two episodes is black. For Tankhun, it’s a flashing neon sign of his state of mind as the dangerous and perilousness of the events happening around him increases. Now is not the time for bright colors, now is the time to be serious.

But I’m not here to talk about the black, I’m here to talk about the green.

While green is not entirely absent from Tankhun's wardrobe in the first half of the season (very few colors are), the first time it takes a dominant role is in episode 10 when Gun presents Ken’s head to the Main Family. As noted up top, green is a color associated with both danger and with the Minor Family, so it's not a surprise to see green appear in this scene. Both Korn and Gun actually have hints of green in their wardrobe (Korn in his tie; Gun in his cravat). But it is notable that Tankhun is not only wearing it, his entire outfit is green.

On a character level, it's a tantalizing choice. While Tankhun isn't in any more danger here than anyone else, but he's dressed as if he is. And while we do see him respond to guns being drawn with more fear and distress than any other point on the show, there's something bigger going on here as well—Tankhun is playing a role.

Let's look at the dynamic of the scene.

Korn is at the head of the table, with Gun at his left and Kinn and Tankhun on his right. Tankhun, specifically, is sitting on Kinn's right—he's performing the role of Kinn's right hand man. And he's wearing green, a color predominantly associated with the Minor Family. Sitting opposite Korn and Gun, Kinn and Tankhun reflect their dynamic in a way that foreshadows the changes to come. That foreshadowing is pretty blatant when you note the blue suit Kinn is wearing. After all where else do we see this same blue/green color dynamic?

And from this point on, Tankhun continues to wearing green in moments specifically connected to his relationship with Kinn (and Porsche). When Kinn confessed his love for Porsche and Tankhun voices his support, he's again wearing green. When Arm and Tankhun save KinnPorsche in the finale, the collar of his jacket is teal-green. And for his last appearance on the show, the green hue of his jacket exactly matches the green of Porsche’s suit.

It's again notable that when the day is won and the danger has supposedly passed that Tankhun does not return to his brightly colored clothing of the beginning of the season, but remains in his darker clothing. The choice works on multiple levels: it indicates the danger has not, in fact, passed; it points to a more permanent shift in Tankhun; and with the presence of the matching green, it links both the danger and that shift with Porsche.

There's definitely been a lot of meta about Porsche's green suit already, and I'm not going to rehash it because we're mostly talking about Tankhun here, but I am going to point out the similarities between Tankhun and Porsche at the end of the series. Both of them are eldest sons—both failed to be what their parents wanted of them, both failed to truly protect their younger siblings from this world, and both of them have found themselves prisoners in a gilded cage of Korn's making. And neither of them are truly safe there.

But speaking of eldest sons wearing green, it's interesting that despite green representing the Minor Family, the only one who actually wears it is Macau. Vegas is awash in green lighting and green decor, but black and red are his personal colors. He never wears green. Until, of course, he does—when he and Porsche genuinely cooperate for a common cause.

Just some food for thought.
